Just out of curiosity, could someone post the current sales of Liddy's solo albums? It would be very much appreciated.

Thank you,
Ethan

I still don't understand why anyone outside of his record company cares about this kind of stuff. It's just interesting... sort of like following sports stats.

I've always enjoyed tracking album sales and chart placements, etc.
I don't base my appreciation for an artist/song/album on those statistics, but I do enjoy having all the facts. :)

To answer Ethan... I don't have any current numbers for Lindsey's solo albums. But given that none of them have reached "gold" status (which is a reflection of the amount of copies shipped over the years, but not necessarily sold), it's safe to say that they've each sold less than 500,000 copies.

I'm curious about this as well. I read an interview recently and Lindsey said he hoped/expected the album to sell about 200,000 copies. Is he anywhere near that? Also, how many copies has OOTC sold?

Well, I got that you were curious when you said so in your first post, but why are you curious?
Also, I don't think I've ever seen you post in the Lindsey forum before, so I'm curious about why your first post is about this.

This is not my first post in the Liddy thread......

Ethan , I can't quote you figures but from articles i've read here and there I believe Law and order sold the most copies. Something that LB said in an interview makes me think it sold about 300, 000 plus. Go insane - something similar.
OOTC (my personal favourite sold the worst, not even 100,000.) And I don't know what the current figures are for UTS. If he hopes to sell 200,000 or so, maybe it's doing better than expected.

He said that "If it sells 150,000 or 200,000 copies by summer I'll be very happy" [paraphrasing]. I think remember reading that OOTC sold 125,000 or something like that. Not sure about the rest.

It's actually kinda funny because you all sound so defensive.

God, I can't believe you think Lindsey's album sales are as funny as Britney shaving her head!!!
Some fan you are.

Nah, I'm not a fan. It means you're fanatical about something. I just love Fleetwood Mac thats all.

What I meant was, for the same reason that someone might seek to find out how many albums Lindsey has sold would be the same reason someone might give 2 sh*ts about Britney shaving her head...curiousity. Wise @$$.

I don't see the problem with wanting to know why. With artists like FM, LB, SN etc. the subject will always come up because every time you read a review or article about someone related to Rumours you hear "one of the biggest selling albums ever" "100bajillion copies sold" etc. It's only natural that someone might think "Wow, Rumours sold that much so I wonder how well 'X album' did in comparison?"

Some people find it interesting, some people couldn't care one way or the other. In the end it doesn't really matter whether you're interested or not.

It still surprises me that out of those first 3 albums, OOTC sold the least copies. It's the only album actually backed by a tour, he did quite some promo for it, it got the best reviews out of all three, and it's the most commercial one. Or, I should say, easiest to accept by the general audience.

Don't worry. He's sold like...37 quadrillion copies of it since I reviewed it for Epinions.com back in September. At least that's what I've heard.

Yeah, like you weren't being a wiseass when you wrote your sarky reply ;)

And I'm not denying if someone posted Lindsey's record sales I wouldn't be interested, I just don't understand why it seems to be discussed more than the music.
I also don't understand why someone who has shown little investment in the Lindsey forum and discussing Lindsey's music makes it one of his first posts here.
I'm curious about that.

What I find totally irritating that sales are still a topic in fanland. The man tries for a lifetime to pull all the attention to himself, his skills and his art and NOT his commercial value, and people who say they love him keep on discussing it more than his art. People like this threadstarter may start what they want. But it irritates the frickin'hell out of me. I want to discuss music. Sometimes I think that there are just a handfull soulmates on this site.

Ok ok, I was being a bit "sarky" but I was just proving that musicman's point was just as valid as yours. Point is, he's interested in Lindsey and that's what we all have in common here. It's not an unreasonable question to ask. He might be a numbers guy. Maybe record sales gets him off. Who knows?

There are few people that really talk about (the perception of) music here.

I have been reading lots of ****ty threads about Stevies and Lindsey personal lifes about Lindseys wife and so on. And then someone asks about album sales and that is pointless? Now come on. I have been interested in that by myself. I`d like to know the numbers too. Why? Yes why. Why is anyone here? Why spending time on the internet for a hobby.

I don't personally feel that Ethan's (musicman408) question was pointless. In fact, it's an interesting one.
However, other Ledgies have deemed him to be a nuisance, and won't cut him even the smallest amount of slack.

So my response wasn't in regards to the legitimacy of Ethan's question... it was directed to those people who can't manage to muster the self control to refrain from participating in the very same threads they loudly decry as "pointless."

And as for Ethan, yes I find it doubly strange that someone who has shown little interest in Lindsey before is suddenly interested in his record sales.

Well, I don't blame Ethan. He can do what he want. It's just typical that asking for albumsales happens over here. Let's be fair: It's a topic that follows LB for 30 years now, and whatever the guy tries to accomplish with his art: since 1979 he fights against THAT specific expectationforce. Hell, the guy repeats the same things over and over again in interviews and tries to make music that is conquering that expectation and drives alot of businesspeople insane.

Over here, the home of his biggest fans, they just do the same. And I ask myself; how long must the man say that albumsales is NOT his main focus before people accept and go INTO the art and discuss THAT?

I only love this forum because it sets me in contact with people who provide "realtime" information and wicked downloads. And a few people inspire me with good music outside of my Macfix. I cherish that. But I cannot be found alot outside the LB-forum, simply because 90 percent is bull in my opinion.

My reply truly was in response to Carrie's assertion that Ethan now has "carte blanche" to create as many "pointless threads" as he wishes.

If she, or anyone else, feels that this or any of Ethan's other threads are pointless, then they should stay away from them. It's as simple as it sounds. No one forces anyone to read a thread. Glance at the subject line and who posted it, and if it's not your cup of tea then move on to something else.

By the way, despite protestations to the contrary, I have a feeling that if this album had been a massive sales success for Lindsey, there would have been much rejoicing on this board.

Every time a favorable critical review is posted, a round of cheers goes up in praise of the journalist for seeing Lindsey's "vision," so I imagine the same would happen if the album caught on with the public, too.

I'm not saying that as if it's a bad thing, mind you.

My interest in knowing the "sales" is to know how many people in the world have a Lindsey album not how much money Lindsey is making. Weird to me that the only reason someone assumes another is curious is from a $$$ standpoint.

02-19-2007, 05:54 PM
seriously however... i do think it's a little sad that there has not been the amount of success that stevie has had.... but I think in terms of music as a business, Stevie had the right people around her and worked very hard as well. I love Go Insane and was highly disappointed it did not get the sales that I thought it would... GI had a lot of promotion, more than OOTC in my opinion... Christine McVie self titled was on the charts forever in the summer of 1984, so I think this album may have come close to Gold, but still no where near Stevie numbers... Mick's I'm Not Me is a great album... I love this album.. and it probably sold 2 copies (me and chili bought it....

It just goes to show there is more to being an artist than just performance and artistry.. it is also a business and any musician like myself that doesn't think in terms of making money from our music is just plain ignorant and probably very skinny from lack of food.

Side Note: the guy who wrote the theme to Will and Grace...that little 20 second clip of music made millions from that being played every day 100 times a day through syndication all over the country... the scope is changing folks... music is currency as well as art

Well that's not fair in some ways Brian, as the question to what Lindsey's album sales are has been brought up time and time again here, and it's one I've always, always queried.

Firstly, no one knows what the sales are, as this thread has proved - it's all a guessing game, and secondly, I still don't understand the fascination. Sure it's interesting, if someone has actually has them, but at the end of the day I'd say it's only 1 percent as interesting as his actual music.

I just find it weird how many fans here seem to want to measure his success by album sales and not by what they are hearing with their own ears.
I just don't see it with other music forums. Maybe I'm visiting the wrong ones.

And as for Ethan, yes I find it doubly strange that someone who has shown little interest in Lindsey before is suddenly interested in his record sales.

Now you have me mad. In no way am I judging Lindsey's musical talent by his commercial success. Theres nothing wrong with asking this question. Its perfectly LEGITIMATE for this forum.

Yeah I'm not gunna lie, I haven't been a big fan of Liddy's solo work until UTS came out and I got in to his older stuff. I started posting in this forum not too long ago and I didn't know that it was an "Unwritten understanding" that this was a guessing game.

I love Lindsey and his work. I do not judge him by his commercial success because of the genius that he is. To get so hyped up over a thread like this is absolute BS. I shouldn't have to defend myself, but I feel like I do. Just because Ethan doesn't post here a lot doesn't mean he isn't able to ask questions. This is a FORUM.

Bollocks. You were sarcastic from the get-go by not answering his question with a "I know" or "I dont know" rather than going off on the tangent you did. I digress...i never said I was better than you. I get passionate about Lindsey but he aint my brother...or my uncle...or anything like that. When people tell me in real life that Fleetwood Mac sucks or Lindsey Buckingham "aint that good" I just let it go. It's not THAT big of a deal. It's all relative cause it's based on personal opinion. And maybe I am riding my own high horse. I am the mother f*cking Ponyboy.

If you don't own Lindsey albums than I'm incomplete in ...Fischer-Z...
Is Reveal or Fish's Head a good starting point?

Is Reveal or Fish's Head a good starting point?

Yes, but that's starting in Fischer-Z's second life. I like Fish's Head, because it has some more highpoints, but reveal is the better album. Second life F-Z's best is Destination Paradise.

All three original Fischer-z albums are brilliant: Word Salad (79), Going Deaf For A Living(80), and Red Skies Over Paradise.(81)

There's a compilation of those three and some solo-Watts-songs out there too. It's called "Going Red For A Salad"

I recommend to start at one of the first three....
