...and I rejoice.

Audioslave singer Chris Cornell has quit the short-lived "supergroup," citing "irresolvable personality conflicts as well as musical differences," he said on Thursday.

Cornell, 42, who rose to fame with defunct Seattle rock group Soundgarden, will reignite his solo career with the May 1 release of "Carry On," his second solo album.

"Due to irresolvable personality conflicts as well as musical differences, I am permanently leaving the band Audioslave. I wish the other three members nothing but the best in all of their future endeavors," the part-time Paris restaurateur said in a statement.

The Audioslave split was not unexpected. His colleagues, guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk, have reunited with singer Zack de la Rocha to resurrect their former band Rage Against the Machine, which will play its first show in seven years at California's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on April 29. Rage's plans beyond this show are unknown.

Audioslave formed in 2001, a year after Rage broke up, and recorded three studio albums. In May 2005, it became the first American band to play an outdoor show in Cuba.

Its most recent album, "Revelations," has sold a disappointing 409,000 copies in the United States since its September 2006 release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Its self-titled 2002 debut sold 3.1 million copies, and the 2005 follow-up "Out of Exile" 1.1 million.

Amid rumors last August that Audioslave had broken up, Cornell told Reuters that the band was like a sociology experiment because of the various members' complex relationships with each other. He indicated that a solo existence could be a less stressful option.

"I think the biggest problem with people surviving in a band and getting along and appreciating each other is just the fact that for the most part musicians aren't the kind of people who concentrate or worry about what the other guy thinks," he said.

"Carry On," produced by Steve Lillywhite (U2, Rolling Stones), marks Cornell's first solo release since 1999's "Euphoria Morning," which came out two years after Soundgarden broke up.

The Interscope Records release will include "You Know My Name," Cornell's main title song for the latest James Bond film "Casino Royale," as well as a cover of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean." Among the brand new tunes are "No Such Thing" and "Poison Eye," both described in the statement as having a "harder edge," and the "redemptive" song "Your Soul Today."

The statement also described Cornell as "acrimonious," which a publicist said was the intended term.

For some reason, I've always disliked Audioslave, give or take a few songs. They seemed very "generic alt rock" to me. But I'm bloody stoked to hear that Rage Against The Machine may be reuniting. Tom Morello said that the Coachella gig is a one-off thing, but hey, stranger things have happened.

No they didn't suck. Chris Cornell is one of the most powerful singers of rockhistory. Any band he plays in, can't suck, cause he's a great songwriter too.

For me, It doesn't matter in what band he plays, as long as he keeps singing and writes songs...I'm OK.

I saw that posted about 2 weeks ago on another music website, And then all I could say is "Good!"

Soundgarden was a great unit and RATM was great for their style of metal/music.

I saw SOUNDGARDEN a couple of times and they rocked!

I also loved the latest James Bond theme song that Chris did. He's got an amazing voice....

Chris Cornell is awesome but Audioslave sucked heartily. I liked RATM, I love Cornell but there was something about the two that didn't mix. Yet, they were HUGE.

I rejoiced when I heard the news, and even better there's a new Chris Cornell solo album coming out. I can't wait. I even loved his Bond theme.

Gerald did you heard Cornell's cover of Billie Jean? It's gonna be on his album.

I loved Audioslaves first album, but hated their second to pieces. So I've not been on track lately with Chris' bondtheme, nor his covers. Billy jean huh? Can never be worse....

Wow... alot of hate for the Audioslave.
I am in the minority.... I guess. I loved them!
The 2 styles (RATM w/ Chris) made great songs... Yes, the second album was just OK, but I think redeemed themselves with the 3rd (and final).
I saw them twice, once they headlined, and were amazing!

The thing about "supergroups" is that they usually break up. Rage is reuniting, and going to tour and make a ton of cash. Chris will do the solo thing. I thought his first solo record was amazing! I have heard Billy Jean (it was all acoustic) and it takes balls to cover that.

Wish all them all the best... and thanks for the music.

Come on people, let this man scream through your heart. This is Chris' livecover of Billy Jean by MJ. Those lyrics are painful in hindsight....

Can't say I'm disappointed. I really liked Soundgarden and Temple of the Dog. I kind of grew up with their music because my mom used to listen to them and Pearl Jam quite a lot when I was in junior high (she still listens to Pearl Jam, actually). When I first heard AudioSlave (Like a Stone, I believe it was), I loved it, I bought the album. But once I listened to it I was so disappointed with what I heard that I gave the cd away to a friend of mine and I haven't regretted it.

I'm quite glad to hear this. I love Chris Cornell and think he's a fantastic singer, but apart from a few decent songs, I thought Audioslave was trash. Excited to hear that he's recording a solo album, I'll definitely have to check that out.

His other solo record had some great songs. I am excited to hear a new one from him. Not as excited as I am to see you posting though, Moony.
I miss ya.

I think it's fantastic. It brings out the sinister undertones of the lyrics. I have an MP3 of this I shall post in a minute

Moons ya gotta see it on a big screen! It's so much fun. Totally action packed. I just saw it in a second run place a few weeks back. The title sequence is so damned good, and you need to see the dude walk out of the ocean in his speedo on the big screen. I coulda watched it with no sound. :blob1:

Gwen Stefani, it's the most annoying song ever.

This is the song set to a montage of Gwen photos. It's the best I could come up with on a quick youtube search.
