Tim Hardaway: 'I hate gay people'

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17160685/

'I'm homophobic,' says former All-Star a week after Amaechi's revelation

MIAMI - Retired Miami Heat guard Tim Hardaway said Wednesday that he hates gay people, but later said he regretted the remarks.

"You know, I hate gay people, so I let it be known. I don't like gay people and I don't like to be around gay people," he said while a guest on Sports Talk 790 The Ticket. "I'm homophobic. I don't like it. It shouldn't be in the world or in the United States."

The discussion was sparked by last week's announcement that retired NBA center John Amaechi is gay. The host asked Hardaway how he would interact with a gay teammate.

"First of all, I wouldn't want him on my team. And second of all, if he was on my team, I would, you know, really distance myself from him because, uh, I don't think that is right. I don't think he should be in the locker room while we are in the locker room."

If he did find out that a teammate was gay, Hardaway said he would ask for the player to be removed from the team.

"Something has to give," Hardaway said. "If you have 12 other ballplayers in your locker room that's upset and can't concentrate and always worried about him in the locker room or on the court or whatever, it's going to be hard for your teammates to win and accept him as a teammate."

He later apologized for the remarks during a telephone interview with Fox affiliate WSVN in Miami.

"Yes, I regret it. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said I hate gay people or anything like that," he said. "That was my mistake."

The only reason anyone is this extreme in expressing their horror at the idea of gay sex is that they think about it constantly. Well adjusted people don't expend that much energy thinking about the mechanics of other people's sex lives.

Pretty simple equation with this one folks.

Do you really think that all people who are uncomfortable with gay people are gay? I mean, I would think many of them are, I guess, but all of them? Isn't it possible that some straight guys could think it was yucky too? I would think it's possible, judging from some conversations I've had or whatever. Not saying this a-hole isn't gay, but...

For the record, f*ck Tim Hardaway. He was a ****ty BB player and has the social skills of a stem cell. I got news for ya pal, gay people don't want to be in the same room with you either!

When I read stories like this I reverse the situation in my head. What if Richard Simmons went on record as saying that he didn't like black people, their lifestyle was wrong and he didn't want to associate with any of them? Would a lame ass apology make it all better? Hardly. I wish that GLAAD had balls like the NAACP does.

Someone who goes so far as to make a public statement that is this extreme - yeah. There's a problem there. A big problem.
This guy isn't just uncomfortable. He is so disgusted and freaked out and over the top, that he can't help but make a spectacle of himself. All kinds of sex acts are kind of gross to me, but the amount of time they are in my head or I talk about them? Seconds a year.

The idea of having sex with a woman is gross to me. But women hit on me lots, and I am flattered. I know they're not gonna rape me. I know I can say no. I'm not afraid to be in a room alone with one. This guy is all kinds of fukced up. What would people think of me if everytime someone mentioned het sex on the ledge I freaked and said how sick and disgusting it was? Or that I hated straight people?

No, this guy was over the top and way out of line, (although it said they asked him, right? He didn't just suddenly for no reason out of nowhere start talking) but I've heard milder forms of similar sentiments, and I don't think it was because the person is gay, that is what I was asking about.

And I think mikeshmike is right about GLAAD and NAACP comparison thingy.

I completely agree with you. It's been my experience that people who are entirely comfortable in their heterosexuality either are indifferent to the sex lives of homosexuals or they campaign for equal rights because they see no problem with having a different bedroom preference than their own. My best friend is a perfect example, the only time she talks or thinks about homosexuality is when she's defending the right for marriage, other than that, it really doesn't cross her mind...and why should it? Now, my friend who threw the biggest fit when I came out to her, the one who stood on her soapbox and threw the bible down at me from it...she admitted to me months later that thoughts of being with a woman had often crossed her mind.

Slightly off topic, but hilarious...

Top 16 Reasons Why Gay Marriage is Wrong

16. Gay marriage will change the foundation of society; we could never adapt to new social norms. Just like we haven't adapted to cars, the service-sector economy, or longer life spans.

15. There are plenty of straight families looking to adopt, and every unwanted child already has a loving family. This is why foster care does not exist.

14. Conservatives know best how to create strong families. That is why it is not true that Texas and Mississippi have the highest teen birthrates, and Massachusetts, Vermont, and New Hampshire have the lowest. This is a myth spread by the liberal media.

13. Marriage is a religious institution, defined by churches. This is why atheists do not marry.

12. Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That's why our society has no single parents.

11. Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's why we have only one religion in America.

10. Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.

9. Straight marriages are valid because they produce children. Gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn't be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren't full yet, and the world needs more children.

8. Gay marriage should be decided by the people and their elected representatives, not the courts. The framers checked the courts, which represent mainstream public opinion, with legislatures created to protect the rights of minorities from the tyranny of the majority. Interference by courts in this matter is inappropriate, just as it has been every time the courts have tried to hold back legislatures pushing for civil rights.

7. Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage were allowed; the sanctity of Britany Spears' 55-hour just-for-fun marriage would be destroyed.

6. Civil unions, providing most of the same benefits as marriage with a different name are better, because "separate but equal" institutions are a good way to satisfy the demands of uppity minority groups.

5. Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women are still property, blacks still can't marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.

4. Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.

3. Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.

2. Being gay is not natural. Real Americans always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, and air conditioning.

1. METEORS and VOLCANOES.

Yeppers. It's been my experience that the most homophobic people are the ones who have questioned their own sexuality. People who are 100% secure in their sexuality generally don't react with such hatred...

A few years back when I was heavily involved with my church, me and my gay best friend were on the council, we had such a hard time - were constantly fighting homophobes....but stood our ground.

I'm not kidding when I say that the loudest most vocal group of anti-gay people are now ALL out and gay as picnic baskets. The lone one who hasn't come out is still an asshole, and I hope one day he can come to terms with his own sexuality.

Anyway - when someone is that homophobic it's clear to me there are issues with security in their own sexuality - I'm not saying they're all gay but they are definitely not secure within themselves.

Oh and I LOVE that gay marriage thing - it makes the MySpace rounds every so often and it always makes me chuckle.

just in time to get drunk on green beer & get it on in a gay bathhouse.

don't knock it 'til you've tried it!

I googled Hardaway, and found this article from eurosport.com:

The NBA have removed Tim Hardaway from all league related appearances, after the five-time All-Star made derogatory comments about gays.

The former Miami Heat guard, had been part of the NBA's festivities ahead of Sunday's All-Star game in Las Vegas, but an interview he conducted with a Miami radio station has caused outrage in America.

Hardaway was asked how he would react to having a gay team-mate, in response to the recent news that former NBA centre John Amaechi has come out as being gay.

"You know, I hate gay people, so I let it be known. I don't like gay people and I don't like to be around gay people," was Hardaway's response.

"I'm homophobic. I don't like it. It shouldn't be in the world or in the United States."

"First of all, I wouldn't want [a gay man] on my team, and second of all, if he was on my team, I would really distance myself from him because I don't think that is right. I don't think he should be in the locker room while we are in the locker room.

"If you have 12 other ballplayers in your locker room who are upset and can't concentrate and are always worried about him in the locker room or on the court or whatever, it's going to be hard for your team-mates to win and accept him as a team-mate."

After the tirade, NBA commissioner David Stern confirmed that they would no longer be using Hardaway to promote the game on-behalf of the Association.

“It is inappropriate for him to be representing us given the disparity between his views and ours," Stern said in a statement to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Hardaway has since apologised for his comments.

“I regret it, I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said I hate gay people or anything like that, that was my mistake," he told a local TV station in Miami.

Meanwhile, Amaechi, whose coming out led to Hardaway being quizzed on the issue, says the comments may actually lead to a more educated debate on the subject.

“Finally, someone who is honest”, he said.

“It is ridiculous, absurd, petty, bigoted, and shows a lack of empathy that is gargantuan and unfathomable, but it is honest, and it illustrates the problem better than any of the fuzzy language other people have used so far.”
