Now listen, I know I start a lot of food threads. I do. But I thought of this one the other day, and I couldn't resist. I tried, really I did, for days I told myself "They'll make fun of you for starting another food thread! They're all gonna laugh at you!" But I just can't help myself. Oh, and since we never have enough polls around here, I felt it necessary to put one in.

Say you were only allowed to choose one of these items at a breakfast/brunch. Any flavor/ingredients you'd like, but you can't have your muffin & eat toast too. :) Choose only 1.

Most of you know that I've never met a bread product I didn't like. :D But if I had to choose, I think I'd go for the bagel. I enjoy an occasional danish or donut, but when I say occasional, I'd guess twice a year at most. I usually have the bagel. With butter or cream cheese please. :D My fave is a whole wheat bagel with honey nut cream cheese or a blueberry bagel with butter. But since I'm trying to be a bit more healthy lately, I've been eating Weight Watchers bagels (only 2 points compared to about 5 or 6 for a regular bagel!) with a bit of peanut butter.

My least fave of these is probably the biscuit. I do love a good biscuit, but it's not a sure thing that it will actually be a good biscuit - they're often dry & then I'm disappointed. Scones are iffy too. And bread - it had better be fresh baked. I don't want some crappy slice of Wonder bread at my fancy brunch! :p

I voted for the biscuit because it's the most versatile of the selection. I can stuff it with bacon and egg to make it a sandwhich. I can layer it with butter and jelly and enjoy the sugar high. Or I can just use it to sop up my gravy and egg yolk after I shovel the everything else down. You just can't do that with a donut or coffee cake.

I'm a bread eating mofo. I must eat bread daily or I go nuts. You name it bread-wise and I will try it.

King's Hawaiian Bread is the best bread in the whole world!!! I love that stuff.

This was hard. My favorite subject...carbohydrates!!!

I chose the donut, mostly because I've been craving them lately but can't figure out why. Maybe it's just because I haven't had one in so long, or the fact that there is no longer a Dunkin' Donuts on every corner...

But on the list I love a good scone..especially if it's served with clotted cream and a fruit curd I like.

I also love a good bagel and always enjoy toast.

Otherwise the choices on the list I can leave or take.

I don't think English Muffin should be included. I don't know why. But with that in mind, I accidentally picked donut.
But really, my favorite is english muffin. I don't think I can move my vote, though. The other day I went to breakfast and had the works, eggs, sausage, hash browns, english muffin. And then I ordered a second english muffin when I was done. Kind of gross, but there it is. Nothing is a more delectable butter holder. And we all know how delicious butter is.
Plus it is a very important component of another of my favorite treats, the Sausage McMuffin.

I just now had a great half a donut, and wished I had the rest, so I kind of jumped the gun on the donut thing. I do love donuts second. Yesterday I had two donuts. Kind of gross, but there it is again.
But of course I love all the things on the list.

Who doesn't love to talk about food? I like food threads. Have we had a sandwich thread? My sig is all ready...

I went with bagel. I'm not 100% sure that it's totally my favorite.. but like someone mentioned, biscuits aren't really reliable unless they're my grandmother's. and she's not with us any longer.

I enjoy my blueberry bagel well toasted, but not burnt, with light grape jelly on both pieces of the inside. Then I sandwich it. No butter, no cream cheese. Just blueberry bagel and grape jelly. It's delicious, and smells soooo good.

It's the nooks & crannies.

And I think you should start a sandwich thread, if we haven't had one already. I know we've done soup, not sure about sandwiches.....

BTW - forgot to mention that I want my bagel lightly toasted. :wavey:

I went with Toast. I cannot live without having toast for breakfast in the morning. Without it, it feels as if something is missing from my life. In lieu of toast, gimme an English muffin. But not Thomas's. For some reason I only like store brand English muffins.

I like my English Muffin (preferably Bays) cut in half and then very toasted, verging on being burt. I then spread a generous portion of peanut butter on both slices. This is usually accompanied with a banana and a large glass of milk. If you add some canadian bacon, this would be my idea of a perfect breakfast.

I went with bread, because all my other favourites are really not that 'implemented' in our society here. I can only really induldge in those when I am in the US, so it wouldn't be fair to bread/toast if I chose any of those.

But what I really like best is toasted bagel. Dunkin' Donuts' toasted bagel with cream cheese. God, I wish they would import that here.

Absolutely!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On I lighter note, I spent like $20 in a Taco Bell in Lafayette, Louisiana in like 1985 while baked. So, anything counts while baked. Sadly, we tried to eat the food in said Bell, but would up laughing at the shape of the Taco for like 30 minutes and afterward had lost the muchies and had to go home. Oh Well.

I ADORE bread and baked goods. I picked cinnamon roll because that sounds really good to me right now. And whenever I splurge and grab one of those Pillsbury cans and bake 'em up, I love how they make my house smell.

I eat English muffins at work, like every other day. Whole grain ones. Either peanut or cashew butter on 1 half, and Brummell & Brown spread on the other half, w/ cinnamon (no sugar) sprinkled on top.

the ingredient used to make toast is baked bread. therefore, toast is a baked good, it has just gone through one more cooking step.

besides, you could say that toasting is baking. especially if you consider parbaked bagels, which are fully baked once they are toasted.

Yes, I make my toast in the oven, I don't have a toaster. What is confusing about that? But of course, as you know, the first statement (not by you) was that toast isn't a baked good, which is just wrong. Which you know already.
Okay. I can't tell how this thread got confusing, but it's all very clear to me. Toast is as much a baked good as most on the list, because it was baked first. Just like english muffins and bagels (?) and bisquits are all baked first, then often toasted. Okay, not so much bisquits, but still. You can't count the secondary preparation as a description of the original bread good. Which is baked.

toast is totally baked!!!!!

TO WIT:

bake (bāk) pronunciation

v., baked, bakĀ·ing, bakes.

v.tr.

1. To cook (food) with dry heat, especially in an oven.
2. To harden or dry (something) by subjecting to heat in or as if in an oven: bake bricks.

v.intr.

1. To cook food with dry heat.
2. To become hardened or dry by or as if by having been subjected to the heat of an oven.

ergo, it does not HAVE to be in an oven to be considered "baked," it just has to have been cooked with a dry heat, which a toaster does.

toast has been vindicated!!!!!!

Hello, bread precedes everything else. If it weren't for bread, nobody would have ever come up with muffins and rolls. Come on now, give the bread/toast a chance here. It deserves to be on this list and it deserves to win.

Poor bread/toast. Like Amber said...totally unappreciated.

You don't have to defend toast, because it is clearly made of bread. Bread is baked. So bread is a baked good.
Let's do a logic problem for this:

All bread is baked
All toast is bread
so therefore
All toast is baked

Your toaster uses dry heat? That's weird.

:p

Again, in MY own personal definition of "baked goods" - no toast.

That said, I do love toast, in fact I had toast with my dinner last night.

I have so many questions! Is it the only thing we are allowed to eat? For instance, if I am having eggs I would want toast. But without eggs or other such items, I would have a bagel. Is this being served buffet style - been around a while - or brought HOT to the table? I do not want cold toast.

I tend to agree. The people on the mainland (I'm on a oil platform 40 miles off the coast) are much like the Inuit (sorry if I've got the spelling wrong) and catch was is available in the sea locally. The oil firms buy it to save import costs and to support the local people. Tiksi has only about 1000 people.

I'm not into the pointless killing of whales. I see them most days - as it's dark the lights on the rigs attract them and in summer we see them everywhere. Because the water is so clear they are amazing to watch.

Most of the sea around me is frozen but there are places where the currents prevent the ice forming. Whales use these to catch some air. In the summer there are loads of different types here - you see 20 - 30 every day for about 3 months. They are incredible.
