That's the first official list of bands. As I posted in the other thread, most of the big acts are TBA. So far, Iggy Pop & the Stooges, Booker T & the MGs, Johnette Napolitano (according to her myspace page, she is playing in a VERY small, intimate, hotel cocktail lounge), and many other cool acts are confirmed. Morrissey is rumoured to return, and there's another rumour of a Nirvana reunion w/ Ben Kweller on lead vocals.
Ledgies around the world - please post your recommendations! Y'all haven't let me down yet! Last year, I became a huge Wolfmother fan, thanks to Gerald. :xoxo:
One more favor - if you say a band is "good," please mention what type of music it is or who they sound like or why you think they're good. If it's techno, ecstasy music, twangy country, or something else I know I won't like, then I won't waste my time googling for them. In the near future, the SXSW site will have MP3s loaded and a sort function to list bands by genre and city & state/country, so that will help.
Thanks!!

I didnt list the obvious Austin based acts that you may know Livia:
Jello Biafra-(Former singer of the Dead Kennedys) Hardcore punk & spoken word
Broken Teeth (Featuring Jason McMasters of Dangerous Toys)-Rock
Tracy Byrd-Country musician who puts on an entertaining show, I would recommend him if you're a country fan.
Mastadon - Metal band, alright for their type of metal (Not thrash/death/black metal)
Meat Puppets-Alternative rock (I remember these guys from when they had 2 former members of San Antonio's metal band Pariah, Kyle Ellison & Shandan Sahm, in their group for a time)
Ian Moore-Great guitarist from Seattle - Rock
Charlie Robison-Country (Married to one of the Dixie Chicks)
Duncan Sheik-Rock/Alternative rock
Stardeath and White Dwarfs-Alternative Rock (From OKC, friends of Flaming Lips)
Tia Carrera (Didnt know she is based in Austin  )
The Tragically Hip - Canadian rock legends

Jello Biafra-(Former singer of the Dead Kennedys) Hardcore punk & spoken word - He's here every year and I never see him due to a scheduling conflict...I may try harder this time...
Broken Teeth (Featuring Jason McMasters of Dangerous Toys)-Rock Rule #1 during SXSW and only because I live here - never see anyone local. His AC/DC cover band, Big Balls, is also playing this year, which I thought was kinda odd.
Tracy Byrd-Country musician who puts on an entertaining show, I would recommend him if you're a country fan. Not really...
Mastadon - Metal band, alright for their type of metal (Not thrash/death/black metal) I'll google and check 'em out
Meat Puppets-Alternative rock (I remember these guys from when they had 2 former members of San Antonio's metal band Pariah, Kyle Ellison & Shandan Sahm, in their group for a time) The original members just did a surprise reunion show, I'm not sure what the sxsw lineup will be
Ian Moore-Great guitarist from Seattle - Rock formerly from Austin 'til he met a chick from Seattle and got married. :p He is a great guitar player, and nice eye candy too. But, I consider him local....next!
Charlie Robison-Country (Married to one of the Dixie Chicks) Not really into his music...
Duncan Sheik-Rock/Alternative rock After the butchering he did of Songbird on the FM tribute album, I don't think I can sit through a set...
Stardeath and White Dwarfs-Alternative Rock (From OKC, friends of Flaming Lips) They sound interesting....
Tia Carrera (Didnt know she is based in Austin  ) They won best metal band at the Austin Music Awards a couple years ago, they're alright
The Tragically Hip - Canadian rock legends[/QUOTE] They were just here for ACL and I skipped them...meh

Black Tie Revue (Pittsburgh PA)
- A local act over here. They're kind of punky, more new wave, but a fun band altogether. I saw them once a few years ago, and their set was really solid.
The Blue Van (Copenhagen DENMARK)
- One of my favorites! They opened for The Pretenders when I saw them last year in Atlantic City. They're a bit of a 60s garage throwback, and they put on a fabulous show. Some of their influences - The Kinks, The Sonics, The Small Faces, etc. Their songs are incredibly catchy, and they're completely adorable. I highly reccomend them.
The Breakup Society (Phoenix AZ)
- Formerly Pittsburgh-based powerpop band, fronted by Ed Masley, a great rock writer. They're on the label I work for, Get Hip Recordings. Unfortunately, I have never seen them in concert, but everyone I know who has seen them said that they're phenomenal. For a while, I could not stop playing their album, "James At 35." I mean, they have songs with names such as "Robin Zander" and "The New Ronnie Spector." Name-dropping like that is always good. Much love for The Breakup Society.
The Cynics (Pittsburgh PA)
- The greatest band to ever come out of the Steel City. Known as the "garage rock kingpins." Their influences are vast, but their sound, to me, is reminiscent of The Sonics, early Petty, Dylan, Blue Cheer, the Stones, loads of 60s garage and folk. Their lead guitarist, Gregg, is the owner of the label I work for, so he's basically my boss, which is weird. But I'm not just saying that, they put on a fabulous show, and their albums are always consistent. Michael, their lead singer, is an absolute sweetheart, and a great performer - he reminds me a bit of Iggy Pop onstage. If you check 'em out, tell Gregg or Michael that Kate Hate sent ya!
Gore Gore Girls (Detroit MI)
- Think, The Ronettes wielding Gretsch guitars. The Gore Gore Girls are another one of my absolute favorite bands. They've got the badass Detroit rock 'n' roll attitude down pat, and their ability to craft a perfect pop song could make even Phil Spector jealous. The Gore Gore Girls kick ass.
Grand Buffet (Pittsburgh PA)
- Basically the coolest hiphop duo ever. Songs like "Benjamin Franklin Music" and "Oh My God You're Weird" are hilarious, and they're also very structured. They're awesome.
IV Thieves (Nottingham UK)
- Another band I've seen opening for The Pretenders. I can't really describe their sound, but they have traces of The Beatles and Oasis in them. Noel Gallagher even commented that they're one of the greatest bands in the UK. I got to hang out with them a few times, and they're very sweet. And they're also adorable.
Lily Allen (Hammersmith UK)
- Because she's Lily Allen! Her tunes are reminiscent of old ska and dancehall music, and just catchy as all hell. Lily is the ****!
The Paybacks (Detroit MI)
- More straight-up Detroit rock 'n' roll. They're very consistent with their material, and I've never heard a dud on any of their three albums. A garage rock and powerpop hybrid, their sound is kind of like Cheap Trick, only much ballsier. Another favorite band of mine.
Sloan (Toronto ON)
- Fun, Beatle-esque punchy rock 'n' roll. "Chester The Mollester" may be one of the greatest songs ever.
Tilly and The Wall (Omaha NE)
- TILLY! I can't even really describe their sound, but they're loads of fun, and their records are great. And they tapdance!
Mary Weiss (New York NY)
- Former lead singer of The Shangri-Las. She has a great voice, and her songs are great. I'm seeing her next month in Cleveland, and I cannot wait.
That's all I can think of. I want to go to SXSW so badly.. maybe next year, though. Have fun!

OKC has mentioned the possibilty of doing something similar to SXSW in future to highlight the expansive alternative rock hotbed of 'the City' that has grown exponentially since the explosion of the Flaming Lips.
And people think Oklahoma is just a country hotbed.

Since the definitive list of acts and their specific showcase times haven't been written in stone, it's hard to say who I will wind up seeing. However, the musicians that I MUST see are:
Johnette Napolitano (she's the real deal)
Amy Winehouse (her song "Rehab" is my favorite at the moment)
The Watson Twins (absolutely gorgeous - they will be awesome)
The Fratelli's (awesome band and they look like a lot of fun!)
The Good, The Bad & The Queen (Paul Simonon - 'nuff said)
Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton (Broken Social Scene side act)
Lily Allen (love the CD and I think she'll be fun to see)
Midlake (a lot of people compare them to the Mac and I can totally see why)
Paolo Nutini (YUMMY!)
The Pipettes (new girl group with a big buzz behind them)
Charlie Sexton (although he's a local, I adore him)
Spoon (love that "The Book I Write" song)\
Viva Voice (I'm excited about this!!)
The Walkmen (Like a couple of their songs but LOVE their horn arrangements)
There will certainly be more!!

You're welcome! I'm totally jealous that you get to see them and I don't :P It should be a great show, though.

Lesbians on Ecstasy was a favorite of mind - and Holy **** and Holy F*ck being listed one after the other.
Rickie Lee Jones, Emmylou Harris and Pete Townshend are gonna be guest speakers. I know RLJ is performing too (although I can't stand her new song that I keep hearing on the radio, it's on right now - same song she did on Letterman the other night, and she looks like crap). Anyway, I'd love to see Emmylou or Pete perform somewhere.
Edit: Just noticed that Emmylou IS performing during her panel session - which means it will be jam-packed. Unless they hold it in the largest room at the convention center.

Morrissey is rumoured to return, and there's another rumour of a Nirvana reunion w/ Ben Kweller on lead vocals.
Wow, that is a weird rumour. I really hope it doesn't happen. It just seems wrong.
Anyway, I don't think there's much for me to recommend, I obviously got here way too late, but I will mention a couple anyway:
Afterhours - great Italian band, Smoky, swaggery, sexy rawk
Martina Topley Bird - she used to sing with Tricky, but she's even cooler solo
Andrew Bird - I love him! Great voice and amazingly talented whistler and violinist (not many pop stars can say that these days). I'm going to see him in March myself. I can post some MP3s if you're interested. His next album is going to break him I think, it's soooo good.
The Black Angels - cool, dark bluesy, gloomy rock and roll. They are touring at the moment with The Black Keys. I'm seriously tempted.
BORIS - Melvins-inspired Japanese rock. Their last album Pink was in a lot of year-end polls
The Broken West - I've been listening to their debut album I Can’t Go On, I’ll Go On a lot lately. Just infectious power pop, with definite Big Star and Kinks influences
Vashti Bunyan - Vashti is an English folk singer who recorded one album back in the early 70s which didn't do much and she just retired from the music business. Years on the likes of Devendra Banhart and Joanna Newsom started singing her praises and she finally recorded a follow-up. She's also worked quite recently with Animal Collective. A real treat to see her I think.
Cracker!!
Daniel Johnston - see the documentary The Devil And Daniel Johnston, which is amazing, and you will want to catch this guy.
Willy Mason - just a great acoustic singer-songwriter. Compared to Dylan, but then isn't every dude with an acoustic guitar. Def worth checking out. Good sense of humour and cool tunes.
Midlake - I saw them three times last year. Yes they are that good. And they have cool, weird films they play as a back-drop, interesting vintage equipment and beards. Oh yes.
Grant Lee Phillips - I've never seen him solo, but with his band Grant Lee Buffalo he was amazing live, I'm sure his solo show will be just as good.
Fionn Regan - fantastic Irish singer-songwriter, with cool funny memorable songs and lots of charisma
Gruff Rhys - the singer from the Super Furry Animals. I saw his solo show last night Livia, and it is so much fun, don't miss!
Sahara Hotnights - all-girl punk rock from Sweden, what could be better?
Sloan - perfect power pop. They lost it for a while but I hear their new album is great.
That's more than a couple but what the hell...

Beasts of Bourbon raw hard ROCK ‘n’ROLL! From down under. Their name says it all.
Garland Jeffreys Hail Hail Rock’n’Roll and Matador were big hits. He’s just a classic songwriter that I should check out. Just to be sure about a highquality performance.
JOHN WATTS!!!! Former singer of Fischer-Z. Still active. A great songwriter and special singer. Last year he was playing The day Johnny Cash passed away in a street in Austin!!! Look!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sT8I3uJ0bl0
22 pistepirkko-----Fins. Very original punkpoppy experiments. A great band.

You're not too late at all - it's still a month away, but it takes that long to plan it all out. Thank you for these suggestions - you're the 2nd person who has mentioned Willy Mason to me...I've got some googling to do....
Daniel Johnston - I haven't seen the documentary on him yet...did it show how the die-hard Austinites fought to keep his weird frog mural on the wall of a record store after it got turned into a sandwich shop? I used to live 3 blocks from it when it was still a record store. Records, not CDs. And yes, the mural is still there.

I don't know if you checked out the other links I posted, but this is a vid from 22 Pistepirkko. They do things in quite a broad range, so this is not archetypical for them. They can pop, noise, punk and rock and everything in between. Very sympathetic and good band. Checkem out Livia, they're very inspiring.

Certainly not his best song, but it gives you an image of his humour and sensibility for real life. This guy plays regularly with electric guitar over a preprogrammed synth. He pours out great melodies, rawedged but beautiful melancholic poprock with a wink. I love it.

SXSW is always a nutty good time around here. Last year was my best yet(Met Ray Davies, Bobby Bare, etc.), and I didn't even buy a wristband. For me, that seems the way to go - select your few "must sees" and don't kill yourself running around trying to catch everything under the sun. (I've done that) The Continental Club I hear will have something special on Saturday Night (read old school deliciousness) but things are still being firmed up.
I will probably be playing a few shows at Ego's and Freddie's Place but will surely be out and about. We should try and hook up Central Texas Ledgies n visitors.
From the descriptions posted, the Gore Gore Girls have intrigued me most so far. And there's the free shows at Auditorium Shores that are often pretty bad ass (Toots and the Maytals, Gourds, Allen Toussaint, etc.) - I hear Public Enemy might do one - I'm not a fan but an interesting choice.
I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see Townsend do something small and acoustic. But those presentations where they speak (Emmylou, PT, etc) are usually impossible to get in unless you have the $600 industry badge, and even then it's first come basis.
I need to peruse that list more and keep checking back here...
Livia

Ozomatli is playing one of the free shows, hope they don't get arrested this time! I believe Public Enemy is a go as well.
The schedule is up now -

I'm already going bonkers - The Gore Gore Girls are playing at the same time as Iggy Pop & the Stooges. But, they are also playing a day party at Yard Dog on Sat.
Midlake is also playing the same time as Iggy. But, they're rolling thru Austin on their tour next Friday and at the SPIN party on Thursday at Yard Dog.
Read the bio for Steaming Wolf Penis - hilarious!

As much as I would love to see Iggy Pop again, to see the Gore Gore Girls at the Continental Club is almost too good to pass up.
The Watson Twins are playing @ a Presbyterian Church!! How friggin' cool is THAT??!??
The more I hear about Razorlight I like...And the Bravery as well.
Hows this for a one/two punch: Amy Winehouse at midnight on Thursday and then an hour later, a few doors down, you've got the Fratellis playing!! Hell yeah!
Of course, nothing beats seeing Johnette Napolitano on Saturday night in a small bar on the 18th floor of the downtown Hilton. Heaven!!

I really love the band Oakley Hall, playing at Antone's!
Here are some links, and a quote from their webpage:
In other news, we get a double shot of UNCUT mag’s love this month. First they named Second Guessing one of the best albums of the year in the November issue and then they included “Hiway” on a CD of new American psych in the December issue. And we thank them for their yank love. We noticed that Lindsey Buckingham is on their list too, so we’d like to take this opportunity to ask him outright: Lindsey, will you produce our next record? We love you. We love “Holiday Road”, “Go Insane”, Buckingham-Nicks, and Tusk. “Hold Me” is in heavy rotation on tour. We love it all. We have very little to offer in terms of money, but ever hear of indie cred? Doesn’t pay the bills, but it would add some color to the ol’ resume. Think on it and please contact us at

A week away and my head is spinning from the scheduling and re-scheduling. But I've finally whittled it down, more or less. Lots of these bands are playing daytime parties, which helps a lot w/ all the nighttime conflicts:
The Pipettes
Mohair
Lily Allen
Rachel Fuller and guests (Mika, Martha Wainwright, Willy Mason, Sean Lennon and Pete Townsend)
Razorlight
The Gore Gore Girls
The Bravery
Sahara Hotnights
The Blue Van
Isaac Hayes/Stax 50 Venue (Helloooo, children!)
The Besnard Lakes
Funky Nashville
The Hedrons
Land of Talk
Amy Winehouse
The Oohlas
The Nightwatchman (aka, Tom Morello)
The Fratellis
The Vacancies w/ Joan Jett
The Breakup Society
Sloan
The Silos
The Good, The Bad and The Queen
Charles Wright and the 103
Paolo Nutini (I'm also going to try and snag tix for his ACL taping)
Johnette Napolitano
Iggy Pop & The Stooges
Perry Farrell's Satellite Party
Whew! And I've still left room for some wandering time for whatever, like bands from Japan - they're always fun. And really, the further away from Texas they are, the more I want to see them. Nordic night last year was SO much fun!

Amy Winehouse is my absolute FAVORITE artist right now. Her upcoming CD is incredible...I listen to it a couple of times a day and I am REALLY excited about seeing her. She's playing a couple of times during SXSW. Can't wait!

Okay, is she being serious? Does she mean to be unintelligible and sing about half a count behind the beat and just this side of flat ? Never saw or heard anything of her before. Seems like a train wreck. That is, unless she means to be a train wreck for comedy's sake.

she's dead serious. i have no idea what she drank/snorted before she went onstage but charlotte has her hand on the small of amy's back for a bit like amy might up and topple over. she's apparently a total train wreck -- but when she's not all drugged up, bitch can sing (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=21621016). she has a song called rehab on the new album -- "they tried to make me go to rehab i said no no no" she should have said yes, yes, yes.

Yeah, the feud w/ Lily. Should be an interesting week - I think Amy's got a lot more things booked - 2 showcases on 2 different nights and lots of daytime parties. The festival is so hectic, I don't imagine their paths will ever cross - but ya never know.

Marissa, I totally dig Margot and the Nuclear So and Sos - but everything else I'm doing that night is on the same side of town. They are playing lots of day parties. What sucks about the day parties is that a lot of them don't publish set times - you just gotta show up and hope your timing's good for whoever....
Did I mention that Willie Nelson is receiving an award at the High Times party? Some friends of ours, Hellapeno (fyi Brian - David Derrick's new band) are playing at 4. So, I should still be there at 4:20. :p Last year, they did a 4:20 countdown, like it was New Year's Eve. :D

If you've got DIRECTV, you can watch a lot of SXSW stuff:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DIRECTV Unveils All-Star Line Up Of Artists For First SXSW Live Broadcast - March 09, 2007
DIRECTV, the nation’s leading satellite television provider, announced yesterday a star-studded line-up for SXSW Live, the first-ever 24-hour live broadcast from the celebrated South By Southwest (SXSW) music festival in Austin, TX. The special, airing March 15 through 17 exclusively on DIRECTV’s channel 101 (The 101), will be hosted by Abbey Gennet, lead singer of Slunt, along with MTV VJ Matt Pinfield, and feature performances by Rachel Fuller, Aqualung, Bowling for Soup, The Bravery, and many more.
SXSW Live will be the biggest live music event to air on national television since the LIVE 8 concert, and DIRECTV has dedicated resources to ensure that those in the audience, as well as at home, will get to take part in all the action. The live performances will feature a mix of 24 of the hottest bands and up-and-coming artists including Annuals, Polyphonic Spree, Brandi Carlile, Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly., Ian Moore, Jon McLaughlin, Marc Broussard, Ozomatli, Razorlight, Rocco DeLuca, The Buzzcocks, Stars of Track and Field, Tiny Masters of Today, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Young Love, Tracy Lawrence, Rickie Lee Jones and Pam Tillis.
In addition to the live performances, those watching SXSW Live from the comfort of their homes will have unprecedented access to behind-the-scenes footage, artist interviews and insider festival commentary delivered by Project MyWorld’s Shaina Fewell, and musician Andrew W.K. These segments will include interviews with artists and industry experts such as Keynote speaker Pete Townshend of The Who, Lollapalooza creator Perry Farrell of Jane’s Addiction, Iggy Pop and The Stooges as well as an interview with the legendary Robyn Hitchcock. Todd Martens (Editor-in-Chief of Billboard), Mark Redfern (Senior Editor of Under The Radar), Rob Stevenson (A&R Island Def Jam), Doug Brod (Spin magazine), and record producer Howard Benson will also appear.
Throughout DIRECTV’s exclusive SXSW coverage, an interactive feature will be available to viewers at the press of button, providing essential band information, including genre, hometown, makeup, and history. For new and upcoming bands, the interactive application is a great way to plan out their viewing to get the most of the festival.
Those lucky enough to attend the prestigious music festival will experience the entire SXSW Live performance series at two new state-of-the-art venues, The Lone Star Lounge, with a traditional Texas feel, and modern music club, The Bat Bar. Both venues have been constructed from the ground up in the Austin Convention Center to host the exclusive SXSW Live performances.
SXSW Live is part of DIRECTV’s ongoing effort to providing fresh new music on The 101 to their 16 million subscribers. The special is produced through partnership with the SXSW Music and Media Conference, Blaze TV (CDUK, CDUSA) and DIRECTV and created by Blaze TV’s producer/director Conor McAnally.

Paul Collins used to be in The Beat, which was a late 70s punk outfit, and he's done tons of other albums, but his most recent, "Flying High," is just brilliant. Speaking of Razorlight - From Perez:
Our favorite "groupie" is at it again!
After making a whoreanus appearance at the Bright Eyes concert on Thursday, Kirsten Drunkst was back at the El Rey on Friday night for the Razorlight show.
And, PerezHilton.com reader Vanessa G has this first-hand account of the experience:
"I was at the El Rey last night for Razor Light, which you would have LOVED, the lead wears the tightest little white pants on earth!
But who was there again? None other than Kiki...and she was not looking her very best! All the boys were so unimpressed that I had to practically cover their mouths when they gasped as she passed by us. She wouldn't have heard us anyway, girlfriend was in her own little world. I'm sure it wasn't the drink, she prefers the white, apparently.
We saw her in the bathroom towards the end of the act and she was looking in the mirror like she was trying to figure out what was looking back at her. VERY spaced out! Her friend was hurrying her along, but the Drunkst was staring into another mirror and very spaced out said, "I look bad, I need moisturizer," and proceeded to slather the contents of a random tube on her face.
She was obviously not all there. And holy crap, she is SO thin, I just want to feed her! Completely sexually unappealing" were the words of the evening to describe the rehab-bound young lady. I heard she was there with Drew's Ex, Fab, but I didn't see that with my own eyes, so I can't confirm.
Courtney Love was in the bathroom crying before the act went on, makeup smeared and all! Her new plastic surgery looks ****ing AMAZING, by the way, and her hair looks pretty damn good, too. Long (for her, past shoulder length), straight with bangs and signature platinum. She walked out of the bathroom and straight to the backstage area, not to be seen again the entire evening.
Just thought you'd be interested."
And we are!
It's gonna take a lot more than just moisturizer to save the Drunkst!

I have SO much to tell - but I'm really, really, tired and about to go soak my feet and veg on the couch - but a few highlights:
Yesterday afternoon - Perez Hilton!! He was rushing down the sidewalk, talking on his cell phone, trying to find the entrance to Cedar St. I waited until he hung up the phone and since I could tell whoever he was talking to wasn't much help, I showed him where it was. I gave him a hug, told him I loved his site, but since he seemed to be in a hurry (like everyone is during SXSW), I didn't ask for a pic. Next time...
Last night: Kirsten Dunst in the bathroom at Stubb's. We were at the sink together - I talked to her exactly the way I would talk to any random person during the festival. Didn't mention Spiderman or anything else to let on that I knew who she was. She said she loved Austin and wanted to buy a house here. She was really nice, I don't get why Perez is so mean to her. I just checked his website and read the story about him running into her around 9:30. She must have been on her way to Stubb's then because I first saw her around 10 and she stayed for Iggy Pop, who was f*cking awesome!!
Patrice Pike was at the Iggy show too.
Wayne Coyne from the Lips - at the Amy Winehouse show at Eternal on Thu nite - I asked him if the Lips were performing any secret gigs this year. He said no, but he was doing festival coverage for Jay Leno. It's supposed to be on this coming Thursday. Cool. Oh, and he remembered me from New Orleans, when we were on the same flight together. :D
Last night at the Blender after hours party: Danny Masterson (Hyde from That 70's Show). My friend Steve was in the party, and sends me a photo he took w/ Danny w/ his cell phone, while I was still waiting to get in. A couple of the Best Week Ever guys were there. Some band called Tokyo Rose, or something from Tokyo? had just finished playing when I got in. Some guy told me Amy Winehouse was supposed to play after them, but that she cancelled. I don't know anything about that, I think he might have been confused since she'd cancelled some day parties. ?? Tally Hall was in line behind me - nice boys. I saw them play at a day party. Their last song was "Freebird." And no one yelled for them to play it either. Loved it. Cool party - free Absolut cocktails - and little lounge areas - one had Ms. Pacman, a pinball machine and foosball.
I was smoking a cig outside the convention center and saw Lou Adler having a conversation with Bill Flanagan (the founder of VH1 - he did the keynote interview w/ Pete Townshend, which was great!).
I shook Donovan's hand after his secret gig at the Whisky Bar. The only helpful text message I got from the official sxsw people all weekend. I was right next door, at Antone's, being bored by Terry Reid -got the text re: Donovan - showed it to some random guy standing next to me - who then asked me to show his friend - his friend freaked out and took off. First guy then told me his friend is a huge Donovan fan. So I made his day. :D
Amy Winehouse - whatever! Fantastic!
Iggy - whatever! Fantastic! Just read this on mtv.com - I totally agree! And this helps since I have no brain cells left to compose my own review:
"The true apocalypse, though, came a short time later with a set that was the perfect capper to a chaotic five-day journey. To say that reunited Detroit punk godfathers the Stooges blew the roof off Stubb's would be an understatement (and not only because the outdoor venue has no roof). The always shirtless Iggy Pop gyrated like a demented go-go dancer and kicked off the show with five classic Stooges songs that sounded so raw and snarling they made you forget the band took a 33-year break between their last two albums. "Loose," "I Wanna Be Your Dog," "TV Eye," "1970" and "Funhouse" were crackling with chaos and electricity and the permanently amped Pop was clearly sucking up the energy from the crowd."
There seemed to be a theme this year of ending the set w/ a cover song. Tally Hall did "Freebird," Badly Drawn Boy did "Don't Stop Believin'" by Journey, which was hilarious, the crowd dug it. Perry Farrell's new band, Satellite Party, did one, but I can't remember now...
I totally lucked out and got a laminate for the SPIN party this year. From the CEO himself. :D We were chatting at Eternal. Amy Winehouse was supposed to play at 11, but they switched her to 1 AM. That kinda screwed up my night a bit since I was planning to see the Fratellis after Amy. But that's okay, cuz I saw them play at the SPIN party. With Pete Townshend. :blob1: He joined them for one of their songs and then they did "The Seeker." I was 10 feet away from the stage. :D Free BBQ, free tequila and 10 feet away from a rock god. How happy can you be?
I hit more day parties than ever this year. I've drank more Red Bull in the last 4 days than I've had in my entire life. Not really a fan of the stuff, but it's necessary during SXSW. I'll post pics and add more later - Bruce has got some stories of his own!

IMPERIAL TEEN @ Antones:
I love a band where the only 2 dudes are gay. The blonde chick rocked and the female drummer was about 6 months pregnant. I was pretty impressed. Visuals aside, they ROCKED! A lot of fun.
RACHEL FULLER W/ Special Guests @ La Zona Rosa: Truly an amazing night.
Livia and I got to the venue about 45 minutes before they started letting people in. It paid off. I was literally 5 feet away from Pete Townshend. :blob2: Pete opened the show with "Drowned" and continued to show up onstage through the evening ( ""Let My Love Open The Door" was a highlight for me). The other guests were Martha Wainwright (who was great), Mika (who I cant quite figure out if I like him or not), Wily Mason (loved the female violinist) and Alexi Murdoch (who was as hot as can be but utterly boring live).
The absolute best thing about this show was the hostess, Rachel Fuller. She is charming, foul mouthed, hilarious, extremely talented. She played Joni's "Blue" and brought the house down. Rachel Fuller has replaced Chrissie Hynde as rock's coolest chick. Really.
ALBERT HAMMOND,JR @ The Blender Bar At The Ritz: They are the Buzz band of the moment. Albert is the guitarist from THE STROKES and he is touring behind his solo project, Yours To Keep. It's a gorgeous CD. Heavily influenced by the Beach Boys, it has a texture that few bands have. They were perfect live. A rock n roll dream. I wish I could see them every Friday night.
AMY WINEHOUSE @ La Zona Rosa: Beehive hair up to here, Cleopatra eyeliner, tight jeans with a skimpy t-shirt and grasping a cup of whiskey and coke -- all this before uttering a sound...that's my girl! Did I mention that she could sing? With a band that wont stop (including 3 horn players and two black men who could out do-wap the Shangrila's) Amy walks on stage and oozes sex. When she opens her mouth, the entire room is hers. Her delivery is amazing. Already a hit in the UK, I wonder if America is ready for such a talent. If you have not heard this woman sing, you need to. She is the dirt.
JOHNETTE NAPOLITANO @ the 18th Floor Hilton Gardens:
Haunted. Mesmerizing. Rattled. This is the real deal.
This is a woman that I have loved for decades. The moment that I head that there would be about one hundred people in the room with just Johnette and her guitar I did a back flip and screamed, "I'm IN!".
I sat second row in front of her microphone. I had no idea just how blown away that I was going to be. Aside from the brilliant in-between song chatter, the lucky people in this pretty room were honored with: "Sun" (didn't think I'd hear that again - gorgeous!), "I Dont Need A Hero"(she lost it, re-composed and carried on -- a true moment), "Mexican Moon" (exotic), "Take Me Home", "Joey", "Ghost Riders On The Storm", "End Of The Line" (where she wailed), and there are a few that I cant remember right now. At some point I was crying. So was she. Johnette is an incredible performer. Amazing.
~~~~~~
My dear friend Livia did MUCH more than I. She went to many more parties, saw many more bands and did her thing. I cant wait to hear her stories!!
She sang it by herself. You are going to LOVE her. And her back-up singers were AWESOME! They were a blast to watch with all of their dancing and hand gestures. It's just a great band and a fantastic show. I wish I were seeing her again. I just might have to make a weekend trip somewhere. She was that good.
