I have butterflies in my stomach! The anticipation of the Dixie Chicks tonite on the Grammy's is killing me. I cannot wait until tonite. The buzz in the industry is it's going to be a good nite for the Chicks. They are going to perform "Not Ready To Make Nice" and are up for five grammy's. Anyone else going to watch?

i used to seriously live for the grammys. but this year, i'm not even familiar with about 90% of the artists up for awards. i stopped listening to commercial radio about 2 years ago, and i am SO unhip to what's cool with the kids these days. i was reading through the nominations the other day, and i didn't recognize anyone til i hit "best new artist" and saw imogen heap's name. to which i heartily laughed out loud. NEW?? i love how the grammy mensa decides suddenly that an artist who's been around for years is new just because THEY've finally become hip to her.
i will watch anyway - i'm curious to see the police. no idea who else is performing, but maybe i'll be turned on to an artist i don't know.

I'm excited! :blob1: And who cares if you don't know or like all the artists? It's about how everyone looks! And whatever freakish things may happen, like some rapper gettin' onstage and ruining your acceptance speech. :) Or someone dropping the f-bomb on live TV.
I posted a list of the performers in this thread, w/ a spoiler warning:

Jazzy, did you see the pics of Christina on perezhilton.com from Clive's party last night? She looks gorgeous!!
Whitney Houston's looking pretty good too! Good for her!
I'll be watching Joan & Melissa's red carpet coverage while recording E!

Jazzy, I would so come over to your house if I knew where you lived. But by looking at your location, I'm not sure where that is
Sersly though, it sounds like fun, wish I was there. I'm going to be at my mother-in-laws for my daughters birthday dinner, but hopefully we can be out of there by 8:00 (without being rude of course ;) ) and watch it at home with sterio surround sound

I just pray she doesn't sing Candyman and I'm scared she will since it's the next single. I love that song, but it's not good for the Grammys. and I kinda don't wanna hear Hurt either...but I'll take it over CM. I hope she rips whatever she does sing tho.

Dixie Chicks nailed it as usual! Love Nat's hair. How perfect for Joan Baez to introduce them. The black and white outfit's are a theme with them and I think Nat's dress was just abit of a take from the NRTMN video. Emily looked hot in that mini dress and long gloves and steel guitar! HOT!! Yes! What is the difference between song and record of the year?
I'm not sure... But I think song is a songwriters award for writing...
edit:
The Song of the Year is one of the two most prestigious awards in the Grammies, if not in all of the American music industry. It has been awarded since 1959 to the composer (not the performer) of the song in question.
Record of the Year, goes to the artist and production team of a single song, Song of the Year goes to the writer of the song.

Yes! What is the difference between song and record of the year?
Song of the Year is meant to acknowledge the songwriter. Must be a song written in the most recent award timeframe.
Record of the Year is for best recording, goes to the performer. Theoretically could go to a cover song.
Technically I suppose there isn't much of a difference. I think it's just a way to make sure songwriters get recognized since performers steal all the spotlight. Either that or the songwriters union had dirt on whoever instituted the SOTY award in the first place.

Well, the Grammy people did put Jethro Tull and Ministry in the heavy metal category. ??
the newer Ministry music is metal (The song "Lies, Lies, Lies" is a great metal tune) - As for Jethro Tull being considered metal, That was when I quit watching the Grummies

Sounds like they could care less, regardless of the category:
MINISTRY mainman Al Jourgensen has commented on the band's Grammy nomination in the "Best Metal Performance" category for the song "Lies Lies Lies" off the band's latest album "Rio Grande Blood". This is the fourth Grammy nomination for Jourgensen and MINISTRY, who were also nominated in 1993, 2000 and 2005 (for "The Great Satan"). Said Jourgensen: "Getting nominated for a Grammy is like getting the big, fat, wet kiss from your wrinkly old aunt at Thanksgiving or Chistmas. You appreciate the sentiment, but it's not something I'd wanna have sex with." The 49th annual Grammy Awards will be broadcast live on CBS from Los Angeles' Staples Center on Sunday, February 11, 2007.

I must admit to having some mad respect for Mary J. She keeps it so interesting by straddling the line- classy vs. trashy, off-key vs. on-key, feminine vs. butch, hip hop vs. R&B, etc. And she pulls some of those notes out of nowhere, just when you least expect it. Never a dull moment with that one.

holy christina aguilera. i thought she blew the house down.
and my girl mary j (yeahh-heahhh) sang it like she meant it, too.
i liked the gnarls barkley performance okay, but i was hoping they'd switch up how they played the song a little more. i liked the intro, but i would have liked for it to have gotten a little more funky, especially after the background singers came in. but cee-lo definitely did his job.. that is for sure. the shades were bitchin'.
there was much else that i was totally down for.. but i will say that if i hear that james blunt song ever again, i'm going to blow my brains out. that performance blew the big one. but maybe i'm biased because, y'know, i hate that song, and i think james' voice is the most annoying pathetic male singing voice i've ever heard. holy christina aguilera. i thought she blew the house down.
and my girl mary j (yeahh-heahhh) sang it like she meant it, too.
i liked the gnarls barkley performance okay, but i was hoping they'd switch up how they played the song a little more. i liked the intro, but i would have liked for it to have gotten a little more funky, especially after the background singers came in. but cee-lo definitely did his job.. that is for sure. the shades were bitchin'.
there was much else that i was totally down for.. but i will say that if i hear that james blunt song ever again, i'm going to blow my brains out. that performance blew the big one. but maybe i'm biased because, y'know, i hate that song, and i think james' voice is the most annoying pathetic male singing voice i've ever heard. (followed by that whole whiny-whispery thing john mayer does that only lindsey can pull off.) go back to whatever coffee shop it is you came from, please.
I agree with all of this!
Christina and Mary J were spot on last night. Business as usual for Christina, but it was a pleasant surprise to hear Mary do so well. Live performances have been a problem for her in the past, but she seems to be blowin' it up these days.

Me too. Message In A Bottle would have been way hotter than Roxanne, but whatever. They sounded good though.
Dixie Chicks bored me. Sorry! :sorry:
Oh boy...Beyonce is on....:p
Loved the Police intro!! Was also bored by the Dixies Chicks. Rascal Flatts did a nice Eagles medley. James Blunt also did a nice acoustic spot and John Mayer was awesome with John Legend and Corinne Bailey Rae.

not to demean their win or the fact that their album was, in actuality, very solid, but i think it did have a small bit to do with the fact that during the initial fallout, they were shunned by many and by giving them grammy nods, it was a way to acknowledge the industry as a whole still stands by them. however, i certainly don't think it's the only reason.

I kind of watched - while doing laundry, ripping CDs into my mp3, watching Family Guy and Brothers & Sisters, etc. I Tivo'd it in case I missed anything spectacular - I missed the majority of performances, so I think I'll go back & watch Mary J. and Xtina. A few thoughts:
Joan Baez looks incredible.
Don Henley looks awful.
Rascall Flatts should never - EVER - do any Eagles songs again. Never. My ears were bleeding. I did like Carrie's Desperado though. BTW - what was all that about? Did The Eagles get some sort of lifetime award or something?
WTF were Scarlett Johannson & Christina Ricci doing there? And did I see Ted from Queer Eye sitting in the audience?
Slayer won a Grammy. I find that hilarious, since I'm sure they don't care.
I don't think anyone looked terrible - actually, I don't like Mayer in a tux. I'd bang Timberlake so hard he wouldn't know what hit him. Good God. Pink looked incredible, so did Mary J. That's all I can think of right now, I missed the red carpet. :distress:

I haven't had time to read this whole thread yet but I thought the show was definitely one of the better ones I've seen in a long time. The show as always is a bit long. When they did the lifetime achievement things for The Doors and The Grateful Dead, it would have been nice if they gave the guys a moment to speak. I missed most of The Police's performance, it was pretty short. Fortunately, I recorded it and went back and watched it later. My verdict is that the boys still have it. I think that is going to be one hot tour. And Mary J. Blige touched my heart with her first acceptance speech for One. Christina Aguilera blew the roof of the joint doing her rendition of James Brown's It's A Man's World. And I've also got to hand it to Justin Timberlake. The kid has matured into one hell of a talented writer, musician and performer. I'm actually a fan. I love What Goes Around. And I loved his backup singers hand movements when they sing "what goes around..." It reminds me of the hand movement Stevie does during Sorcerer when she sings about the black ink darkness.

I agree, the Chili Peppers should have played something more rocking. I was happy for their wins tonight. There's not a bad song on that album, imo.

Cream is the model that all subsequent trios modeled themselves after.
While I think the guys in Rush are all technically proficient to an incredible standard, I think their music has no soul...they're just being technical for technical's sake. (there are many bands I put on that same list) I can listen to one or two carefully selected tracks of theirs at a time, but they just don't move me to listen longer than that. Cream strikes me on an emotional level first, THEN on a technical level. One of the reasons I was drawn to Clapton's playing in the first place, then add Jack Bruce's phenomenal bass playing & Ginger Baker's otherworldly drumming.
The Police...now, they make my feet tap, my head bob, and my body move.
ZZ Top just exudes "coolness".
Zeppelin? I just think we'd end up in a shouting match.
More on the Grammys:
Ok, I was impressed with that Justin Timberlake tune he did sitting at the piano. I knew nothing of his music to that point...he'd just been somebody who'd been on tabloid covers to me.
Actually, I thought Rascal Flatts didn't do too bad a job on those Eagles tunes, but the guitarists seemed like they learned the songs from tabs about an hour before the show. I would've liked to have heard MORE Bob Wills tunes instead though. "Right Or Wrong" maybe? And, why didn't Ray Benson get a feature? His work with Asleep At The Wheel has kept the Bob Wills sound alive all these years...didn't even get face time. I thought that was the "snub of the evening".
I LOVED Common's dig at Kanye West about his constant whining about not winning awards.
Ok, my snotty comment of the day:
Would somebody PLEASE put Stevie Wonder on Nutri-System? Someone's going to mistake him for Barry White here soon.

Because Rascal Flatts moves product. They are the face of WHAT is wrong with the music business. Spiked hair, and mixing rap with "what they call" country. ALL marketing, IMO. That singer, Gary "Whatever", doesn't have a country note in his body!!!! He's singing R&B, or something.....doing the "black" vocal inflections, squeezing 27 notes into every syllable.
(I got to see the bass player get out of his SUV-limosine, in Nashville, a couple weeks ago. Everyone was taking his pic. I was very impressed;) )
Asleep at the Wheel is the real deal, and their demographic is too old, therefore the machine has no interest in them. I love AATW, and Bob Wills. Of course, the record companie's aren't marketing to me.

not televised. Funny, used to see metal awards on the Grummies years ago, but now you dont. That's fine, we metalheads prefer the underground instead of the popularity.
For the record, the video for 'Eyes Of The Insane' is one of the most Fubar'd videos ever, good disturbing stuff.
------------------------------------
Slayer Wins Their First Grammy
Earlier tonight at the 49th annual Grammy Awards at The Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA, Slayer was awarded The Grammy for Best Metal Performance for 'Eyes Of The Insane' from their Christ Illusion album. Sadly, the award was not part of the televised broadcast.
The other nominees in the Best Metal Performance category were: Lamb of God for 'Redneck', Mastodon for 'Colony Of Birchmen', Ministry for 'Lies, Lies, Lies' and 'Stone Sour for '30/30-150'.
This was Slayer's second Grammy nomination, the first being in 2002 for the track 'Disciple' from God Hates Us All, also in the Best Metal Performance category. Tool took home The Grammy that year for 'Schism'.
Slayer is currently headlining a North American tour and did not attend the Grammy presentation, but vocalist/bassist Tom Araya had this to say about the win from his hotel room in Columbus, OH: " Jeff (Hanneman, guitarist) and I put a lot into 'Eyes Of The Insane' so we're thrilled that the Grammy voters took the time to listen to it, and then vote for it. We're out here on the road and we're all really, really happy."
