Do you love it or hate it? What kind of driver are you? Any tickets/arrests? Did you get your license right at 16? What car(s) do you drive?
I got my license at 16. Took driver ed in a 1990 Chevy Corsica, and then my dad bought me a 77 Monte Carlo. :p After that, had an 84 Monte, a 97 Monte & now I drive an 03 Hyundai Santa Fe.
I don't mind driving, but I'm not a fan of city driving, esp. if I don't know exactly where I'm going. There are also certain highways that I refuse to drive around here (the 198 & the 33.) I hate them. But the 90 is fine. My husband and I love road trips, it's not unusual for us to take a few trips a year to camp or visit friends 6 or 7 hours away. In 2000, we drove to the Grand Canyon & back - so cool to see the country.
I'm also a driving dork - I almost always obey traffic laws - if it says "no turn on red" then I don't. I don't run red lights, I actually stop at stop signs, I always use my turn signals, etc. I am a mini-speeder, I'm usually 5 over in the city & 10 over on highways. I do not drive if I've been drinking a lot (if I am driving, I cap it at 2 drinks.) I did drive drunk once, and thank God nothing bad happened. I was 19 & stupid. Never did it again, it was so scary.
I'm pretty laid back for the most part, I try not to rage, but it happens. My biggest peeve is people not doing the speed limit, esp. in the left/fast/passing lane - I will tailgait if they're not up to speed. On the other hand, if I'm speeding and some jerk's on my ass, I will slow down to exactly the limit. Just for spite. That will probably get me shot one of these days.
I got a speeding ticket about 12 years ago (doing 54mph in a 40 - I was late getting home.) but that's it. No arrests, no parking tickets. I've never been in a major accident, and the 2 fender benders I have been in were the other guy's fault.

I don't drive. I'll be 26 in May and I'm still without a license. I've acquired my learner's permit three different times (had them expire with little or no use three different times) and taken Driver's Training once. I always pass the permit test with no problem and did well in both Driver's Education and Driver's Traning, but I've yet to even attempt the behind-the-wheel license test.
The few times that I have driven, I've hated it. My blood pressure skyrockets and my hands cramp up from clutching the wheel too hard out of nervousness. I've also nearly gotten into at least one accident, almost ran over my own cat, and nearly hit a goat during a hale storm. So, I've just made myself become quite familiar with the bus routes in my town.
I suppose I really ought to do something about the situation, but my hectic work schedule makes finding the time and opportunity to learn quite difficult.

I've been driving since I was 12, have had my license since I was 17. Last ticket I received was in 1989, havent has as much as a parking violation since.
I drive slower than probably 95% of everyone else in the world, and yes, my wife drives faster than I do. I am almost always in the slow lane unless I get annoyed with a driver who is driving 40MPH in a 65MPH zone (Or if I am on a turnpike I drive 65-70MPH in the 80MPH zone) and feel the need to pass.
I'm somewhat anal in regards to that if you're riding with me you better have your seatbelt on, because if i get pulled over and receive a ticket for it (Oklahoma has a compulsary "Seat belt" law) I will make sure to click the belt around yer spleen.
For the record, I HATE riding in a car...If I am not driving I suffer motion sickness (Deb knows that all to well  )

Hm, I'm a fairly good driver, I think. I got my license when I was 21 (hey, you can't get em here until your 18 anyway) and so far I haven't been involved in any accidents or hit anything. I've also never been honked at, or been involved in something that could be considered a WTF moment for other drivers. I usually am the one honking and screaming WTF though. I'm always in a hurry, and other drivers easily irritate me.
That said, I love driving though! I've had a few speeding tickets over the years (about two, but not big ones...all about 3 or 4 miles above the limit) and about 4 or 5 parking tickets. (As I said, I'm always in a hurry and too lazy to find a decent parking spot.)
I usually get a cab when I go out, but there have been times I've gotten behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol (or pot). I was never actually drunk, but tipsy...yup. :o
But, I will say this: European drivers are better than American drivers. It's true. :wavey:

I have a love/hate relationship with driving.
I'm a good driver, my reflexes and such are excellent - I've always prided myself on that. But I hate driving here because there seems to be some unspoken rule of driving 5-10 miles below the speed limit. It infuriates me.
That said, I do follow traffic laws, except for the speed limit thing which I'm guilty of usually doing around 5 over...but I'll accept going the actual speed limit - it's going slower that pisses me off.
I've only been in one accident...it was recently and it totalled my car...which was six months away from being completely paid off
Other than that I've only had a few speeding tickets, and one for not stopping at a stop sign..in a parking lot. Oh actually - when I first moved to Rochester I got stopped...for turning on red when there as a sign that said not to. I didn't see the sign, in my hometown there are no such signs...I'd honestly never seen one....the stupid part is I did it right in front of a cop. I saw the cop, I didn't see the no turn sign - so I was genuinely surprised when he pulled me over.
I got my license at 16 and my first car was a little hatch-back 1988 Toyota Corolla named Oda Mae.
Then I bought a Mazda Protege - that's the one that got totalled, and now I drive a 2005 Toyota Corolla named Doris. She rocks.

I love driving. But by myself. I HATE people riding with me because they are only there to get on my nerves and tell me how to drive
which leads me to the next part. i'm not a good driver  I've never been in an accident (that was reported) that was my fault  i've had 2 tickets. one was only a few miles over the limit. The other one was back in august when i was trying to save the squirrel :distress: that was a speed trap, though (like it makes it any better  )
I'm a pretty laid back driver. I don't get rage much unless I'm hungry.
The reason I guess other people consider me a horrible driver is: I hardly ever pay attention to what I'm doing :o I'm usually doing about a million things. I DO tend to speed quite a bit, but I ALWAYS use my turning signal. even when i'm pulling out of my driveway. I've had my fair share of road fueds-mostly other people started it, but I guess it was due to my poor driving
When i took my driver's test, I did pretty good, but scored the best on my parking. Parallel parking, to be exact. I also took my test in a straight shift, so THAT was fun. But I passed, and that's all that mattered!!! I'll go ahead an apologize if I ever see you out on the road somewhere  oh, and this wasn't asked, but I ALWAYS wear my seatbelt (****..I HAVE to  ) but it's a good habit to get into and even if I'm running a block down the road, i put it on!

Ooh that reminds me..I am an excellent parallel parker. Seriously...I love to do it - because I can

wouldnt let my Mom drive, so she was reduce to "backseat driving" - and YES (!!!) she had a license for it too.
The following is a true story. As much as you want to believe it not to be it did indeed occur. My Mom was legendary for her driving prowless. Hell, I was once in her car as she laid rubber at a stop sign....With a Muskogee PD car directly behind us. She laughed at the cop as he wrote her a warning, guess those 36 DD's may have had something to do with that...Anyways, below is the story:
Mom didnt get her license until she was 34 years old. Her first traffic ticket was for doing 180+MPH in a 55 MPH zone on a state highway, yes, you read right - 180MPH in a 55 MPH zone...All this without a driver's license or permit (Mom bought herself a 1976 Pontiac Firebird Trans-Am with a medical malpractice settlement. Her first driving lesson was learning to drive atbreak neck speeds on the Muskogee/Broken Arrow turnpike. Mom had the 454 Chevy 8 block modified so the top speed her TA would get was about 210 MPH according to the OHP.).
Once Mom passed her driving test, which she nearly aced, she had a challenge made to her from the OHP trooper who pulled her over. This trooper has a 1980 Pontiac Firebird 'Bandit Edition' Turbo which he claimed could beat Mom's TA in a drag on the highway. Mr.Pooper-Trooper even wanted to sweeten the offer by racing for pink slips, so Mom, being the NO BS person accepted his offer.
The local unit, which this trooper belonged too, cordened off (Can you say "illegally"? Knew ya could!) a stretch of highway 64, Which becomes highway 2 between Porum & Briartown, for the race.
Mom LUNCHED Mr.O-Hip and his black Turbo turd, so much that this trooper was near tears knowing he had just lost his 'prized' car to a woman driver. When he approached Mom to give her his pink slip, Mom told him to keep it, She said "I dont want that piece of crap...It drives too slow". His fellow trooped ripped him a new one for the whole episode.
Awww, the memories of the **** that was my childhood...God it was definitely different than most.

was the coolest person I have ever or will know.
Who else would take apart a Maytag dryer, by reading the schematics, to remove a faulty thermostat and to install a brand new thermostat because the thought having a repairman do it was a joke? Of course, my Mom.
Who else would take her oldest son to school in the TA, just to flirt with the highschool boys and give 'em a cheap thrill, just to hear my oldest brother's friends ask "Who's that groovy chick in the TA?", just to see the look on their faces as Bill told 'em, "That's no groovy chick, that's my Mom".
Hell, Mom used to take her TA out to the parking lot of the USS Batfish (A WWII submarine that is drydocked in our hometown Muskogee, OK.) and show high schoolers how to do a proper burnout/donut on the pavement without burning the rubber off the tires.
She also like to hit the road (At a high rate of speed) leading to the railroad tracks near our home, in her car just to see how high off the ground her car would go in the air - of course after knocking off 2 separate sets of spoilers Mom decided that at $300 a set that her "daredevil days" were over with.
Mom was smart for a 10th grade dropout. She dropped out of school to care for her much younger sister, Nora & my older sisters- Besides Mom was too smart for school anyways. She easily passed her GED test in the late 80's without as much as opening a book to study (She was going to enter college at the age of 45 to become a sociologist/social worker - but her health issues started to manifest)
Brian "My Mom loved her initials B.S. - Because she said those initial were accurate" j.
ps- Everyone who knew My Mom says I am the identical male clone version of her, personality wise & look wise & personality wise - Minus the 36DD rack

BTW - DO NOT include Bulgarians in your statement. They're crazy. I was there 3 weeks visiting my family & almost got killed 3 or 4 times. They like to cut out into traffic in front of people too - but nobody seems to care.

i like driving a lot. especially stick shift. don't always love city driving ... but highways? yes. and as the ledgies who went to the cleveland show can attest, i'm a pretty good driver. except when we're being almost carjacked outside a gas station. i do like to drive fast, though, so i had three tickets by the time i was 20. haven't had one since, though.
i got my license when i was 17, and my parents bought me a car when i was 19, a 96 saturn. sadly it's sitting in the driveway with a leaky radiator. it's been a good car tho.
two of my tickets were for speeding (38 in a 25 zone and 75 in a 60 zone), and one is for turning right on red at a five-way intersection. and i wasn't turning to the next street over, i crossed the median. and there was a cop literally directly behind me. yes, i am a moron. i've also had numerous parking tickets, but only one from the city. the rest are from the bastard university.
i've hit 2 parked cars, but didn't make a mark. i've only been in one car accident, but i wasn't in a car when it happened ... yes. i got hit while crossing the street. not fun.

I started driving a month before my 16th birthday. Mom and dad bought me a 1984 Mustang for my 16th birthday, and couldn't wait to give it to me, so they let me have it a month before! I was so cool! Anyhow, I drove that until I was 18, and totaled it. Then I bought a 1989 Cutlass Calais. Piece of ****. Swore I'd never buy another used car, so I bought my first brand new car in 1998. It was a Saturn SC1. Then, my husband totaled that, so I bought a 2003 Saturn Vue. That's what I'm driving now.
I actually enjoy driving. Unless it's on 465 during rush hour. That tends to piss me off. I have road rage pretty bad. I tend to lose it, especially when people don't do the limit or cut me off. I try to limit that since 9 times out of 10 Sara is with me. But I catch her road raging from the passenger seat sometimes... and she's 8! It's hilarious.
I am a speeder... I get frustrated if you're not doing at least 5 over. I'm always in a hurry, but I'm not sure why! It's been quite a while since I've had a ticket. Last ticket was for speeding. I drive a stick and I love it! I was taught to drive on a stick, and I think it's how everyone should learn how to drive. I will definately teach Sara on a stick. I'm teaching Samantha now, and boy is that a trip. Now I know how my parents felt!!! :o

My mom refused to teach me, which is all good as she may actually be one of the worst drivers on the planet. I literally fear for my life each time I drive with her. And she is not allowed to drive my car. Ever.
So I went to a driving school...with five of my best friends..when we weren't getting in trouble for talking too much we learned a lot :D

I'm a driver. I've driven east coast to west coast, florida to new york. and most states in between.
I like driving on interstates and highways the most. I like to drive fast. And I'm a passer. I don't like being behind another car, even if they are going an appropriate speed. Open road, baby.
I've been in no less than 12 wrecks, but most of them are ridiculous things like.. oh say, the 4 separate times I've been knocked while sitting at a stop sign. Or a red light. In parking lots. No serious accidents, thank god.
I didn't have a permit when I was 15, but I got my license without a test as soon as I turned 16. I've been through a few cars, pimpin' buick, mustang, saab, and now an eclipse, which I've had since '03, and all the miles on it are MINE.
I keep the inside of my car very clean, but the outside needs a washing. Road salt.

Yeah, and none of that 'parents teaching kids' crap here either. It's driving school for at least 40 lessons, 35 bucks a lesson, 300 bucks for the exam, which you usually take twice, because hardly anyone passes the first time around. It's very expensive, and very strict.

We had more than four hours in car with driving instructors...I don't remember how much more though...then we had to do this horrible traffic cone course to pass the class.
The guys teaching us were the nephews of the owners and were dicks. I vividly remember while learing to drive hearing, "hey...is this special driving class??" "What are you...special ed?" always to that effect...made one of my friends cry a couple of times.
I remember one time they took us to an aunt's house and made us all wash all of their cars  Said it was part of car ownership and we had to learn....

Gah, that reminds me of one of my first jobs. I was working in a theme park and we'd all come in in the morning and if there was nothing to do, they'd hand out the dirty jobs, stuff that wasn't really in your contract. One day one of the big boss guys walks up to me and he throws me the keys to his BMW and requests that I clean it. I'm like "Uh, no. That's not why I got hired." I love driving, have to have a stick shift, and am somewhat of an asshole driver. But you kind of have to be, here. But I guess I go a little beyond. For instance, when I had my little red sporty car, and would take it to Stinson Beach - which is one of the funnest drives ever, totally hilly and windy (wine-dee) and cliffside - I would honk at slow people who didn't turnout on the turnouts. Actually, that sounds assholish, but who's the real asshole? I submit the real one is the person who doesn't turn out on the turnouts, even though there is obviously someone right behind them who wanted to go fastah. (Candle. Burns bright. wants to drive fastah! Well, do you know, all the reasons..why-hy. WHY-HY!)
I'm also the kind of person who goes really fast in between everything, even if it isn't warranted. I don't care. Like all my other motive endeavours, it's all about speed, coordination, and speedy coordination. Everything is really a sport to me, driving is no exception.
I must add that my speedy coordination has done well for me, no accidents.
To me, driving is like a video game. A singing video game. But I must also say that I observe all the rules, especially the stopping behind the line rules. Also, every other form of transportation is like a video game for me, as well. Dodge, Zoom, and Weave is my motto. It's funnest on rollerblades, but anything is good.
I also love riding in cars. That has been, and can be, a fun date for me. Like "What should we do?" "Lets drive in your car and listen to the radio and sing! :blob1: ". I love it.

It's true. :wavey:
But ... I thought you guys in the Netherlands rode bikes everywhere? Or is that just Amsterdam? All I know is, I almost got run over at least 3 times in 4 days by people on bicycles when I was there last year! ;) :)

My husband and I love road trips, it's not unusual for us to take a few trips a year to camp or visit friends 6 or 7 hours away. In 2000, we drove to the Grand Canyon & back - so cool to see the country.
But yet I never see you two in my part of the state!!!! :(

Does anyone drive a stick shift any more
I love driving a stick and that's all I've ever driven. I feel like I have more control plus it's fun.
I got my licence on my 16th birthday and have been driving ever since. I like to go to new places and I can listen to my music in the car as loud as I want to. I do like to drive fast but I try not to drive as fast as I used to. I have received 5 tickets so far and 4 of those were speeding. I've been is several acidents, two of which were my fault. The last accident was a big deal. I got sued but fortunately the case got settled.

Does anyone drive a stick shift any more? When I was car shopping recently, people looked at me like I had three heads when I requested a manual transmission. Driving an automatic is so boring... and I never feel like I am totally in control of the situation.
i learned on a stick shift and have never owned a car that is not a stick shift. i can't stand driving automatic. like you, i feel out of control. . .as if the car will just not stop, even if i'm violently breaking.
as far as type goes, i am a bitchy driver. i can't help it. one of my all time pet peeves is when people sit in the passing lane. for the love of all that is still good in this world, move over!!! you can go as slow as you want, just don't do it anywhere near me.
when there is a good stretch of road ahead, i enjoy driving, especially when i'm on my own. but to do that, i have to go upstate or out of state. driving around the city is not kind to my dispossition.
and not that i am in any way adverse to tourists (no really, come visit!), but my blood pressure rises inordinately when i am trying to get to work and all i see are out of state plates making stupid decisions because they don't know what the hell is going on. driving around new york is no picnic; traffic, construction, roads the width of my little finger. . .so if you don't know what you're doing, i beg of you to use public transport. PLEASE! my commute thanks you in advance.

I have been driving since I can remember...srsly. it's a Southern thing. my grandmother and father would put me on their lap and I'd steer while they controlled the pedals. I got my license at 15 I think. but I hate to drive. I literally hate to drive anywhere. I'd much rather be a passenger. and I'm a horrible driver. I drive too fast and too recklessly. there are people who will not ride with me because I make them sick. it's a big joke that I'm such a bad driver or that I close my eyes when I'm singing in the song. damn Stevie and her intense songs.
I haven't had a ticket since I was 18 or so and have only had 2 accidents, which were both fender benders, the last of which was probably 4 years ago so I'm really lucky in that respect.

I love these stories! Do we have a picture of your mom in the Trans Am?
I am the owner of the Tool chest in the house, I have fixed a stereo receiver with a schematic, and taken apart my vacuum to fix it, but I would be scared to tackle a large appliance. Your mom is my hero!
was the coolest person I have ever or will know.

That's me. I weave like a mofo. If you won't move, I will go around you.
I used to have bad road rage. I've had people get out of their cars and come at me, and likewise, I've gotten out of my car on people, too. I've really mellowed out in the last year or so, though. So none of that anymore, really. Well, maybe occasionally, but it's not a daily thing like it used to be.
I want a motorcycle. It'd probably end up being my cause of death, though.

I hate, hate, hate driving. It's mainly my dad's fault, as he's the one who taught me; he would start screaming at me to slow down if there was a car stopped a mile in front of me. It turned me into a very nervous driver. I didn't even get my license until I was 20.
I especially can't stand driving downtown...lots of pedestrians make me nervous, as do narrow streets and cramped parking. I'm better on the freeway, where there are nice, wide lanes and lots of space between me and other cars. I'm generally very cautious...I slow down at yellow lights (which makes people maaaaaaaaad) and never drive more than about 5 miles over the speed limit, unless I'm on a freeway and need to keep up with the flow of traffic. I've been in one accident (I slid into the back of a woman in her SUV) and have never had any tickets.
I'm not as road-ragey as I used to be...I used to be bad about honking my horn and shooting people the bird if they were being assholish (not letting me over and forcing me to exit when I didn't want to is a big thing that pisses me off). I don't do that so much anymore, but I dunno if it's because there just has been cause to lately, or if I'm actually a calmer person.
And I cannot drive a stick shift. I guess I'm just not coordinated or something, but I don't get it. I can never get more than a few feet before the car stalls, and I know that if I ever got out on the freeway in a stick shift, I'd be street pizza.
I'd love to be able to live and work downtown and not have a car at all. I especially hate the upkeep. My inspection and registration stickers have been expired since last summer.

wouldnt let my Mom drive, so she was reduce to "backseat driving" - and YES (!!!) she had a license for it too.
That's a great story :) I bet those troopers NEVER let him live that down!

Does anyone drive a stick shift any more? When I was car shopping recently, people looked at me like I had three heads when I requested a manual transmission. Driving an automatic is so boring... and I never feel like I am totally in control of the situation.
I do! I love the stick! ;) I drive a '92 Toyota Paseo. She is old and a bit tired but still runs REALLY well. She has never broken down, EVER, except for a dead battery which has nothing to do with the quality of the car. I will buy Toyota probably forever now. My second car was a Ford Escort. That car was HORRIBLE. But it was cheap. You get what you pay for I guess!
I learned at 17. I did take driver's ed because you save money on your insurance when you do. It was sort of a joke though, our teacher showed videos in class. And I couldn't believe how few road lessons you needed to get your license.
My Mom taught me, the first time I went out I drove two houses down my street all the while babbling, "Oh my god, am I going to fast? Etc etc", then I slammed on the breaks in the sand, skidded a couple of feet, and recovered to my Mom's infectious laughter! We had a good chuckle, I calmed down, and continued on. She was actually a good teacher which surprised me because she is generally not very patient!
I learned in my first car, a Plymouth Horizon hatchback, which my parents sold to me for $300, they should've just given it to me. Trying to teach me a lesson I guess. Lesson? Be indebted to people. Anyway, that car was pretty good to me. I used to peel out sometimes, haha. Because of the front wheel drive, even though it was a 4 cylinder, it would make a really loud noise. People would turn to look like, "WTF, was that the chick in the Horizon?" It was hysterical.
I had trouble with backing up and backed into a mailbox and another car in a parking lot. But the car wasn't my fault, I don't know where the hell he came from. I also took out a post from my family's deck trying to go around the cars in our driveway via the lawn. I cut the wheel too hard and punched it. I have no idea why! I was a nervous driver! Michelle, I used to always piss people off, people would give me the finger, cut me off, just harrass me. I would have no idea what I did, haha.
I have had speeding tickets. Most times I've been pulled over I have been warned and not ticketed. Once even in this town NOTORIOUS for always ticketing. The officer made me promise not to tell, haha. I was always very polite, "Yes officer" etc. I recently cut a cop off, omigod. I pulled out of a parking lot and I guess I didn't look, that is very unusual for me. But I was really polite and by the end of our convo he was telling me I can't do that stuff, who cares about the other drivers, I gotta keep myself safe. Although he started off being a hardass! These incidents pissed my ex off cuz he would always get ticketed. Haha.
I've had many parking tickets since I used to live in the city and it's street cleaning this Thurs, that Tues, every other street, it gets confusing and you always wind up screwing it up somehow. It is just another expected expense when you live in the city. I don't miss it! But I did learn to parallel park really well living there. I did so in front of my ex once, I only had about 4" of clearance, and he said, "I will never make fun of a female driver again."
Anyway, I love to drive. But I hate other drivers. The drivers here are HORRIBLE. They don't signal, they don't let you merge in when you need to, etc. I try not to road rage so much anymore but have big time in the past. Now I just try to accept that I am really not the one in control. I am at the mercy of traffic laws, lights, other drivers.
And DD, I once did the same thing, turned right on red with an officer right there. But it was at an intersection, a familiar one, that for years allowed right on red. I told him that and he was really cool about it, thank god. I had a couple of drinks too so I had visions of doing the sobriety test in the middle of the center of town! But I wasn't drunk, I was just worried he would smell something. Anyway, all was well, phew.
Okay, I could write more, but I've already well exceeded my quota here!

Ford F-150 extended cab (can you picture this? me? in a truck? yeah, funny. and it went dead if you didn't keep just the right amount of pressure on the accelerator while stopped)
Mercury Sable (died on me after 3 months)

VW Jetta
Jeep Grand Cherokee

ooh, you sound like my mom. she is the keeper of the tool chest also. she's fixed the dryer a couple times with a schematic. she also replaced the alternator on my car. my mom is pretty cool. she's really passed that on to me (not coolness, her aptitude for building/fixing/etc. i always had those "300 in 1!" sets when i was little - where you wire things different ways and you can build a radio, or a blinking light, or whatever? and chemistry sets. my god, the chemistry sets!
in fact, at this very moment, my mom is taking out the vanity sink in our bathroom and replacing it with a pedestal sink. she was telling me about her ordeal at the hardware store today - why is the hardware store always an ordeal when you're a woman? my mom went in and knew exactly what she needed, but the guy who was working there wouldn't just help her find it. he had to know why she needed everything, why she was doing it the way she was doing it, etc. god almighty.
anyway. brian, your mom sounds so cool. i agree with eliza - we need pictures of the TA!

Ha....glad to know I'm not the only one who's done something stupid right in front of a copper.
The backing into things story reminds me of my early driving days. I once piled all of my friends into my car, backed out of my driveway and plowed right into my mom's boyfriend's car.
We all got out -didn't see any damage and sped away. Then being the stupid 16/17 year olds we were we thought that if my mom saw us gathered around his car we'd just tell her that the muffler fell off
We never got questioned though, and I only told her about that a couple of months ago...she thought it was a hoot - though she would not have been so kind at the time it happened.
I also once backed into our trashcan that was set out for pickup  It broke one of my taillights!

I initially learned to drive in an old truck on my parent's ranch on weekends. Must have been 14 or so. There were limits to where I could drive (the McMarr Ranch is huge -- over 1700 acres) but it wasn't like there would be other cars to contend with. It was a blast.
At 15, I took drivers ed. with 3 cheerleaders from my school so all we did was laugh our asses off and gossip about the hot guys in the class. The day I tuned 16, I got my drivers license and my father surprised me with a brand new white four door Volvo GL. That car was the bomb. I had it for about 5 year and ran it ragged. I adored that car.
The next car I had was a used Oldsmobile Cutless Supreme that my parents got me because they thought (and rightfully so) that I didn't take care of my Volvo. I never changed the oil in the Cutless because I hated it so much and it finally died one night on I-10 as I was coming back home from the ranch.
I then got a new Honda Accord and that was a great car! I must have had that car for seven years!! Drove that car to New Orleans, back and forth to Los Angeles a couple of times and, of course, to Austin almost every weekend. That Honda was stolen twice - once in West Hollywood and found 3 weeks later and the second time it was stolen right in front of my apartment...but the police were watching the kids do it and the car was retrieved about a block away. Honda's are built to last, that's for sure. I drove that car into the ground and it kept up.
I then got a Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo in 2001 and loved that car. I love the way it drove and I like being "up" in an SUV as oppossed to a sedan. I doubt that I will ever drive a sedan again.
I got a new Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited last year and absolutely love it -- I'll probably buy Jeeps for quite a while. Great vehicles.
I think I'm a decent driver. Have had my fair share of accidents (some my fault, some not) and speeding tickets. I drove a lot more when I was younger, that's for sure. Now that I'm older, I've become more of a homebody. But that Jeep is in the garage whenever I need it!!

I drive way too much, but I like it most of the time. I put about 28k miles a year on my pickup. But it's at 220 and still going strong. Driving in LA traffic is hideous, but I love to do road trips on empty highways in the middle of nowhere. It's the best therapy on earth for me.
My first vehicle was a motorcycle. An 82 (I think) Yamaha Virago. Not a crotchrocket! It was a wanna be Harley. A great aluminum V twin engine and it totally screamed. Miraculous I never died on that thing riding it without a helmet, drunk, coked up, stupid and in my early 20's.
Had to get a pickup in college because driving in the Oregon rain was too much. I had a nifty little 77 Toyota that rocked. So easy to work on and it was a stick. I learned how to fix engines on that thing. Next was my favorite, an 87 F-150. Automatic, and damn did that thing go fast. It died a horrible death in 97 because the oil pump went out, and I didn't know. Threw a rod. Nothing like that blue smoke and f-ed up rattling noise to ruin your day.
Since 98 I have had this 96 F-150. I like it fine. It's a stick, has two tanks, and I bought it because it was the last year with the square nose. The only drag is I need an extra cab. Never got one cause they always look silly - like the bed was tacked on at the last minute. I have hated the new pickups from Ford since 96, though I saw some at the car show recently that I finally like again. Maybe I'll get a new one next year. I am driving this one till it croaks out, though. No more payments.
I have had a few accidents. The big ones weren't my fault. A couple fender benders have been. Never had a speeding ticket, but ran a few reds when I first moved to LA. My driving record is pretty clean. So thankfully, my insurance is cheap. I can't see having anything but a pickup. I have to be high up to see things and I need to haul stuff often. But, I can picture getting a Mercedes or some cruiser thing at some point. My fantasy is that someone will make a damned real hybrid pickup. Those Prius things are just too ugly and I am sure I'd be squashed like a bug in a wreck.

I like to drive, the 331,000 on the odometer of our 1996 Nissan Sentra GXE should be proof enough of that (I have put about 255,000 of those miles on it and Deb has put the rest - She commutes 90 miles a day round-trip).
I'm glad my Father was a professional mechanic since I know how to work on a car when need be - One of the reasons the "Wildlife Eradicator" is still in great running shape after mulitple large wildlife (Deers) suicide attacks on the fenders (Deb 2 Wildlife 0)

cute kids!
reminds me of how my grandmother would match my brother in similar outfits. she bought an entire collection of striped shirts and solid shorts.
one day I'd be in blue and white striped shirt with solid blue shorts and my brother would be in red and white striped shrit with solid red shorts. lord, bless it. and thank god the Sears catalog stopped coming to her house.

Ok, probably not the best time to respond to this after it took me over 3 hours to get home from work when it usually takes 25 minutes. However, we were (still are) in the grips of a HUGE fricking snow storm and the town I live in, which is right on Lake Michigan is not so great about plowing the roads. It only took me an hour to get to my town but then another 2+ to get to my home a mile away.
So, generally, I don't mind driving and I do a lot of it for my job. I generally make at least one all day trip per week. However, I HATE driving in the snow. Probably because my car is not so hot in the snow. I think I need some winter tires. That or an SUV.
My car history: 1981 Monte Carlo (my dad was painting it right in front of me and told me it was for a friend and then surprised me with it for my 16th birthday); 1997 Chevy Cavalier; my first brand new car, a 1992 Ford Probe; 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse, and the current is a 2004 MB C230. Love it but not in the snow.
I got my license the first possible day I could - 16yrs and 1 month old.
Driving history: Had several fender benders right after I got my license. Mostly with stationary objects (the garage door and the cement poles at the bank drive through). I've had several speeding tickets but none that have gone on my record (being a lawyer is actually good for something)!
Most recent accident was a hit and run. The guy hit me and stopped and pretended like he was going to pull over and then took off! Well, I got his license number and called the cops and they found him and brought him back to the scene and he DENIED it to the cop. What really sucks is that the cop believed me and said he caught the guy in several lies and let him go with no charges and NO tickets. Well, his insurance company believed me and promptly paid for the damages and then some.
So, that's my driving history. I'm going to have a glass of wine now. :)

I present Mom's 1976 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am:

If I ever have the $$$$ and I see Mom's TA for sale (Or Dad's 1965 Chevy Impala Station Wagon), I wont think twice about purchasing it and restoring it.

Is that tan? Or yellow? My friend in highschool had a black TA and we all thought we were so cool when we rode in it.

Tell me about it. Took me about 40 minutes to get to work today, usually takes 15 at most. My town was fine - lots of snow, but the roads were plowed. The minute I crossed over the city line - holy crap. Looked like the plows hadn't even made one pass through yet - and it was 9:30am! :(
And I love them old Montes. I addition to the 3 I had, my dad had a kickass '72 Monte. Now that car had some balls. He got it in the late 90's, had it about 5 years until some asshole rear-ended my brother & cracked the frame. Bastard.
Brian - that TA is fabulous. :D

from this picture (It was taken back in 1979) but Mom's TA was bright yellow. In the picture the hood scoop is off the hood, guess Mom was fine tuning it.
We also owned a 1980 Pontiac Trans Am (Black w/T-tops - Not a bad car for a 'slowpoke', top speed was only 120MPH  ) & a 1969 Camaro SS (Blue with white stripes).
I would like to find a car similar to the one Dad owned (Until my Uncle let his babysitter drive it and wrap it around a telephone pole in CA) A 1970 Pontiac GTO 'Judge' convertible (Metalflake sand color w/green racing stripes).
Of course I still want a 1970 AAR Cuda (Hemi green), saw one sell on Jackson-Hewitt's auctions for $175,000 which is a bargain

Saw that.
A Judge ragtop would be bad ass. I also like the GTX up until about 1970.
If I had the $$$? I'd buy all 3 engine types of the Superbird. Lime, Orange, and Yellow. I love the obnoxious wing. And the beep-beep. I love Roadrunners, too.. but my extravagant muscle car would be a Superbird.
I have a thing for early Corvettes, especially Stingrays. I need.. and I do mean this seriously, as in, need.. a '63 split window. I have wanted one since the first time I saw one at a car show with my dad. His oldest brother.. who died in a pretty tragic incident in the 70s.. had collected and worked on cars for a long time, and among a bunch of badass chevy SS's, a couple plymouths, and dodges, he had some vettes. the 63 split was one of them, and was pretty much the only one he kept. when he died, his widow had to sell them all in order to make ends meet. It's not just my favorite because it's my dad's favorite.. it's just a sweet-ass ride.

I so want a 2007 Dodge Challenger, those cars have the retro muscle car thing down pack.
I have a calendar from the local NAPA auto parts store that has the exact model of the GTO 'Judge' that Dad owned, even the exact color - Loved looking at the January 2007 picture of it (Of course I also like the car for February - 1970 Plymouth Road Runner Superbird!!!)
My older brother Geary owns a Dodge Shelby (It's actually a Dodge Avenger I think) that my brother had Carroll Shelby autograph on the dash, That car EATS Mustangs alive!!!
Carroll Shelby created the baddest car ever created in my opinion, the Shelby Cobra 427. I saw that Carroll Shelby's personal Cobra 427 sold for $5,000,000 - All I can say is DAMN!!!
