“I’m wearing Hollywood Stripper shoes. $49.99. Real lap dancing girl stuff.”
So spoke her majesty queen Helen Mirren at the London critics’ film awards when she won the award for Best British actress for her portrayal of Elizabeth Windsor. Looking stunning in a blue-black taffeta gown the 61 year old showed off some scarily high and very glitzy shoes and gave younger Hollywood actresses a lesson in how to win and how to play to the press gallery.
Instead of blubbing on stage Helen made a gracious speech including thanking in particular the person who had padded her knickers so perfectly for the film! Then she came backstage to meet us press hounds with a string of jokes and little tidbits from the set.
When she first appeared on set in full regal garb, she said, people wouldn’t look her in the eye. The association of her with the role became so strong that and even when she later ‘became Helen’ again between takes, they still couldn’t manage it.
She said she is still shocked that as an ‘Essex girl’ she has ‘become’ the queen, particularly since she grew up in a family of heavy socialists. (Helen is of-course of Russian descent and I think it was recently discovered that she is related (illegitimately) to the former Imperial family).
She ended by making a plea to ‘all the writers out there to keep thinking about us gals when you write strong roles, we can do it you know!”
Later when Pedro Almodovar won the award for Best foreign film and came backstage, Helen returned to congratulate him and they had a really sweet moment together. As she walked away Pedro murmured “I so want to work with her.” So you heard it here first!
Toby Jones won best British actor for his brilliant turn as Truman Capote. (If you haven’t seen the film, I strongly recommend it. And blasphemy of blasphemies I actually think Toby Jones does a better job than Phillip Seymour Hoffman, great as he was.
