View Full Version : how and why did you decide to "ledge" it??

And i know it's the greatest place on Earth. That's not what I'm talking about. I mean-how did you come to know the ledge. What prompted you to join? How did you feel when first joined?? Etc. Who were some of the people that were around back in the day, that you miss?? etc. You know...let's talk about feeeeeeeeeelings.... well..let's not get THAT carried away;)
alright. I guess I'll go first, since I started this mess.
About 4 years ago when I was in college-I looked up lyrics for FM. I came across buckingham nicks and read all the "speculations" (I love that :D ) but was terrified of joining the board  Eventually, 2 years later, I joined but it crashed a couple of months later :( :( I was devastated. NOW what was I going to do??? I had "heard" about the ledge, but to be honest, it scared the **** out of me. It was so big, and, yeah-I had heard the horror stories  So I lurked. But then I got tired of not being able to post, so I decided I would join. Lux helped me find an appropriate email account and I was ret to go. I probably only lurked for a few weeks until I dove in and started talking. and haven't stopped since
I think most of the people are still around when I first joined. Dissention of course is the only one that comes to mind that has left. I'm sure there are more-but most of those left pre-michellenumbersafterhername

haha! good thread. i found the ledge when lisa kept sending me pictures & links from here. i joined a couple months later. the first posters i took note of were david o., chilid, dissention, paula, and amber. i didn't post a lot at first, but then david o. started a thread about me, and i became more confident in jumping in around here. that was about a year ago, now you people will never get rid of me!!

I joined in October of 2000...I've been around forever. I've seen many a ledgie come and go and I've wished that many a ledgie would go :p
I was turned on to the Ledge by a gal who doesn't post anymore - but I met her and her mother at the Stevie AHI in 2000 in Phoenix and I do believe on of their first questions to me was "are you a Ledgie?" and I was like.."huh?"
Then I met another Ledgie from my town - and signed up - he no longer posts either.
I remember many of the Ledgies of old....some are still here which is awesome....some I miss...some I do not (can we say Arizona Ranger?). The Ledge goes through phases - and I go through phases with The Ledge....
It's the one and only message board I am on and I can't imagine going to/posting at another as frequently as I do here.

Well, since 2003 I live breathe and sleep FM and Stevie. So, I figured I needed a place that has people that feel the same way. I think I actualy found out about it on Nicksfix........
But yeah, Ledge is AWESOME. Great people, great fun, great times and a heck of a lot of FREAKINGLY GREAT music.
Much Love,

I lurked since the early days, when it was all one big board. I remember many great people and some not so great ones. Remember that fight Tyrisha got into  I think it got them banned. I finally joined in 2003 likely in a political thread  Actually, I think it was not that. I like it here and have met some really great people both on and off the board. I can honestly say I have never personally met a Ledgie I did not like.

I think I joined in February 2001. I saw it and was like "ooh! Cool Fleetwood Mac message board." I just joined instantly. I've never been a marathon poster, but I've been here regularly since. I've not met too many Ledgies, but the few I have met I've liked. Anyone remember BBallgypsy or Jessica Leigh? Those were the first two I really spoke to. And Johnny Stew. He has always been a sweetie to me, since the very beginning. I've seen some crazy **** in the past 6 years on here! And I still love it here!

I started posting on the old board in 1997, in April or so? after they announced they were doing the Dance. I had lurked for a bit before that, but the excitement of the Dance announcement brought a lot of people in. I was 14.
I've been posting on the Ledge over half my life. How completely insane is that? It's comforting to know it's here still, and nostalgia is probably why I stick around.

Well, I had The Very Best of... and The Dance, and I wanted to talk about them with someone. :p And of course I had to go out and buy the rest of the albums to know what everyone was talking about. Overall, The Ledge cost me a lot of money. Esp. the store that wanted $30 for FM Live.

I remember BBallGypsy and Jessica Leigh was one of the first Ledgies I met in person (she was friends with the ledgie dude from my town). I haven't heard from Jessica in forever - last time I saw her was at the SYW show in Phoenix...but I remember both of them well...

I really like Jessica Leigh. I have a suspician she likely lurks here.
Remember when we first met Chicago at, I think Banana Republic on Michigan Ave. We were like - I GOTTA GO SMOKE!!!!!! Actually, I have a picture of that somewhere  Then, happening in on that steakhouse where La Nicks had recently eaten  and then having LARGE fruity drinks and discussing finances, which could have been greatly helped by spending less on booze and cigs - NOT  good times indeed.

I was looking for an MP3 of the Midnight Special version of Rhiannon, and after checking all of the fansites I clicked here. I had to join to post my request, and stayed pretty quiet for awhile. I'd comment here and there and vote in all of the "survivor" type threads, but I didn't say much. Then Jaz started the Project Runway thread, and I started coming here more and more. This place grew on me, and now I love it.
Dissention was around when I started posting, as was David. Brian/Liquidblue still posted here all the time, as this was pre 7 Wonders. It was a lot different from how it is now. There weren't as many polls, that's for sure ;)

I had been reading here a good while before actually joining. I LOVED Dissention's posts and I loved the political debates and the good liberal spirit overal with the occasional righty thrown in to keep things... funny? Interesting? :D
Have not been that interested in the FM music for the past 15 years but love the personalities here in the ChitChat forum :) And feel right at home, you guys are a great and welcoming and intelligent and witty bunch.

And, to think Brian really only started SW because The Ledge closed for a brief period of time for, I believe, maintanence. I still go to SW, but not as much anymore. I still kind of get nostalgic about the 2004-2005 time period, it just kind of seemed that all of the major posters at the time jelled well and liked each other, and also disagreed with each other quite a bit. But it was all a lot of fun, mainly because thats when I really started posting. Riss was talking about being 13 in 97, she's 23- the board was taken down in 2000 (hijinks!) and when it was put back up online it was with the format they have now- it was so so weird compared to the old board! But that's why the earliest 'member since' dates are 2000.

I don't recall how I found the Ledge, Decided to stay around cause I grew tired of other websites/message boards I was a member of (Try moderating a bunch of homo-phobes/racist/metal heads - Gets ol' after a few years!)
I thought about leaving a few times, But I enjoy the company here (Trust me, the fights here are like 2 ameba's fighting compared to some of the other message board fights I have witnessed - and occassionally still do.) so I stick around to be the resident sarcastic fubar'd signature picture posting asshole metalhead Stevie-Nicks-leg-humping social commentator.

Oh, I totally remember. We had so much fun. God, the keepers list- remember Adrienne from Las Vegas? She was crazy. We had so much fun coming up with the stupidest things to keep. I'm pretty sure that I was the Keeper of Stevie's Coke Spoon.
What was it that used to happen to the posts if two people posted at the same time? It used to cause so many problems..
Didn't you have your own site :p :p

Oh ok  And thanks also to Haley for clearing that up. I really didn't think that one through or do any math in my head...it all makes sense now though

i vaguely remember adrienne. i can't remember want i was the keeper of but i remember ali having christine's green cup -- i think she fought for it, actually.
i'm pretty sure when that happened, the ledge made like old mother burnish and exploded into a mass of fiery timbers. it used to break -- a lot -- if memory serves.
it cracks me up that we all still talk -- and never about the band that brought us all together.

it certainly had its good points and bad points. it was always fun for us youngins to get into a total verbal frenzy with the 30-40 somethings -- we could carry a conversation with the best (and worst) of em' and hold our own. many a fight was had  we'd get into trouble now and again but all in all, i don't regret becoming a board member. i've met some fabulous -- and not so fabulous -- people because of this place and have remained friends with a lot of them over the years.

I found the ledge right when the Dance came out. I came to find more information. I stayed to watch the dysfunction. I left because it got old. And now, I bounce in and out to look for more information. I like a lot of people from here. I just don't like fan discussions here anymore.

I lurked forever, starting around Enchanted, then tried to sign up around TISL. After no response for a couple of months to my signup request I gave up. I was finally successful just after SYW - I think because I wanted to hear the "Say You Will" radio mixes or something - but it still took a while, I remember.
Anyway - love the board, love the posters. We're on an upswing now, which is always nice. But we all know what that means...

I only got my first home computer in 2002 and the first Mac board I joined was Neil's Go Your Own Way forum. It's not very active now but back then there were quite a few regular posters. The Ledge was often mentioned there but I found it a bit daunting here, I think I was also a member of Nancy's board and Burnish way before here, so I lurked to find out news but I didn't join for a year and even then people were really cold and unwelcoming when I started posting. I think Gaius was the probably the first person I really talked to on here.
It's funny even though I've only been around The Ledge for four years the amount of people who come and go. I guess for a lot of people their fandom dies down (Dissention is actually a good case in point since when he first joined he was a massive Stevie fan and by the time he left I don't think he cared about the Mac at all), but I still really love Fleetwood Mac, which is why I keep coming back.

I joined the Ledge in March, 2005. I came because I couldn't stand the Mick Fleetwood discussion board and wanted to come somewhere I could state an opinion (respectfully) and not be trashed.
My experience has been a very good one. I was welcomed by many upon my first post. For a few months I felt like very few people wanted to respond to my posts, but I've come to realize that it takes some time to establish relationships.
I've posted on a zillion discussion boards on a variety of issues and this is the best one by far.
I miss David and Dissention.

Ah, nostalgia!
I joined when TISL came out. Stevie was touring and I wanted to know more information. Before that, I was on a S&L listserv, and then I switched to a fanfic listserv. I was quite prolific back in the day. ;)
I used to post several times daily on this and of course on my own board. However, when my board was shut down by Marty for security reasons and I couldn't figure out how to get it back on line, it was pretty discouraging. Then, as I started stressing more and more and more about my dissertation, I found it harder to enjoy posting, and eventually the posts dwindled down to the rare and occasional.
I had so much fun. I'd sit down at my computer and one of the first things I'd do was click on the Ledge. The Stevie-Lindsey debates were so prevalent then that I put it in my sig. I, after all did have the ethos of having a site for both. ;) I remember the Survivor I ran with rezamatic - I really cracked the whip on that one!
It's not all rose-colored memories. I remember the fights. I remember one time spending over an hour writing a response to a political thread, knowing that I would get mercilessly tag-teamed by dissention and gldstwmn, with The Tower occasionally joining in and of course ever-diplomatic Jason. I remember the feuds. I remember the time I was threatened with a ban when I complained about threads being locked or deleted. I look back on it now and realize - hey, it was part of the fun!
I've met so many Ledgies, some of which I'm still close to off-board. I do remember the long nights in BN chat with Cathy, Curtis, Brit, Lux - even Gaius popped in sometimes. Some nights, when something dramatic would go down, the chat would be packed! There was a time when Johnny Stew and I talked on AIM amost every night for hours, too. Things have changed, but the memory remains. :)
I could go on and on about those days - I was here a LOT.
I'm still stressing, but when I see threads like this, it does make me want to post more, and update BN.net, and all those things that would make it like it used to be. And then I remember that I have to turn in a chapter in a few days and all my good intentions go to pot. Maybe some day I'll become a regular again... after I can find joy in the little things once more. Of course by then most people will have forgotten who the hell I am! Do you all pity me now? Don't worry, I'm done whining!
I'll say one thing. I've been on non-FM message boards and the drama here is a heck of a lot more fun!

I joined first back in 97 or 98 under a different screenname...I want to say it was sillydreamer79. in fact, this was back when The Ledge sold demos and boots and VHS tapes of concerts. I ordered like $200 worth of stuff and I'll never forget the day I saw the box on my doorstep.
anyway, I went off to college and never really got online and then a couple years later, I decided to revisit this place and couldn't remember my screenname and password so I created another one (this was back when you could use free email accounts). I didn't post for a while b/c everyone I knew, besides Travis and Johnny Stew, were gone. then, I slowly seeped into the groove and been here ever since.

She is lots of fun. We were supposed to see FM at Hershey and then in NYC, but allegedly La Nicks' voice was hurt and they canceled, I think. I believe she was in Detroit that night we partied with Jamie Foxx and the band. What a night. I got back to my room at like 3:00 in the morning after pouring myself out of the elevator at The Ritz and suddenly coming upon these young soccer players who were like "Hey dude, we're wasted, come party with us in our room!" Had I not had the spins, I would have gone LOL. Then Goldie and I headed to the airport at like 7:00 in the morning. Needless to say, I wanted to die the next day. But, hey, I partied in a room with La Nicks three feet from me. I never spoke to her because that would have been rude as she was with her friends, etc. But, I ate the FM craft service tacos and we got a "good night" and a smile and wink from La Nicks as she was retiring
Also, their massage therapist massaged my hand and I held someone's (Cheryl's I think) white dog while she went to the bathroom.

The thing I find sad is that most of the people I traded music within the Fleetwood Mac community (i.e.-Sara M. of the Stevie Nicks Underground & Tracy of burnish.net) seem to have gone onto other things in life, and if it wasnt for those people I wouldnt have the FM collection I now have....So I feel a bit of pressure to keep the music alive by trading it, as they had done with trading music to me.

Maybe some day I'll become a regular again... after I can find joy in the little things once more. Of course by then most people will have forgotten who the hell I am! Do you all pity me now? Don't worry, I'm done whining!
I will still be here, probably trading music as usual and trying to find more goodies to pass around to us music lovin' folkz.

I'll let someone more knowledgeable answer that. I've never knowingly had any run-ins with him. Although, if you read the rose.gypsy posts in the "Flaming Liberals" thread ryan linked to earlier, you'll get a pretty good idea. (Assuming it's the same person, of course.)

I floated around a couple different FM boards here and there when I first got into the band, right about the time that SYW came out. I couldn't even begin to remember how I happened upon this one, I think I was looking for Stevie pics or something and just found it. Despite the good times and the, uh, not-so-good-times  , it's the only one I've stuck around for, even after I've moved onto other obsessions. I could never leave now - too many nice people.

I think that is what I did, too, found the board by accident. But, I had just bought a $300 SYW front row ticket for my thirtieth birthday (they were playing here on my b-day) and saw some thread where someone said "I'm going to see them, blah!" and so I had to reply with "I'm seeing them blah for my blah birthday!!"
Then, after my first concert, I posted my experience here, b/c I saw many other people posting their experience (I didn't have any trouble at all registering, I don't know what is up with that)
and a girl I was next to for the concert was on here (We call her Super Tiff) and we had both been annoyed by the TUSK guy at that concert. So I had said something in my review about her, and how it looked like "some girl" I was next to had gotten some super awesome photos, and that I had kinda talked to her and snooped on her photos. Tiff posted that that was her, and then helped me get a superkeen ticket for the next day's concert in San Jose, and that is that.
As per everyone, no one would answer me when I first posted. I didn't really care that much, everyone was so funny then that I just kept laughing and laughing at everyone's posts. My favorites were the back and forth, or separate, posts of "Darklinensuit" and "Gardenstategirlie". I thought I had never seen anyone so funny, I was always rollling. (Miss you, Jake!).
For a long time after that up until awhile ago, I made a point to try to talk to all the new people and be friendly and nice to them. So I guess it did kinda bother me when no one answered...:p But many new people are funny and cool, so it wasn't a chore or anything.
I remember I was so excited to find a place where people obsessed about FM like I did. I knew nothing at the time, and swear I had been listening to the same few albums for years, which didn't even include any of Stevie's solo albums 'cept SA and Timespace. No one else I had ever met ever liked the Mac, friends made fun of me, my parent (just the one bitchy one) scoffed at me, and here there was a huge slew of people who loved them and knew everything and had demos and videos and boots I could only dream of. I thought it was heaven. It is, kinda. FM heaven. And I think FM music is heavenly, so that works for me.:woohoo:
Lots have people have said they aren't into Mac music as much, now, but I always am. I like lots of other things, but Stevie's voice isn't in any of them, or any of their voices, or songs, no other band has so much different stuff in one thing, that is all blended together so wonderfully, magically I might even say. Even though they are so different.
It's three bands in one, and one of those "bands" has the person's voice that I fell in love with sight unseen at a very young age, and that no one else in the world has, and which is so unusual that that the phrase "no one else has" really means something. The voice is so complicated and strange and capricious and inventive that at any given moment...it could be something completely bizarre and wonderful. Or something crappy (not usually). Or something just plain old super talented, by anyone's standards.
Point is, you're not going to see that magnificent weirdness again, guarantee. And it keeps me fascinated as long as I hear new material, and I always do, with this band. Sheesh, did they record or photograph their every waking moment??? Thank goodness.

I'd known about this place for years from other Fleetwood Mac fans, but never bothered to even lurk because of all the frighteningly obsessed fans (not necessarily members of the Ledge) I'd encountered in chatrooms and on various email groups.
Then I started posting on the boards at WarrenZevon.com and got into a "conversation" about The Ledge with one of the people there. Apparently she used to be a Ledgie but left in disgust because, as a teenager, she felt she had been unfairly treated by the other board members. She really didn't have anything nice to say about these boards so, of course, I just had to check it out. :D
And I've been plaguing it ever since.

i was a regular on another board for a while, back in 2003, but (yeah, this is going to sound b*tchy) it started getting flooded with silly kids, and it started to feel like high school. really silly, boring, fluffy discussions. i had been a lurker here for a while and loved it, but felt unworthy (often still feel that way). i finally got up the guts to register, and it took FOREVER for me to get on. finally did - started posting, everyone ignored me   - but i persevered! i believe i've visited every single day since then, only with the exception of when i've been out of reach a computer. i am constantly awed by the encyclopedic knowledge and devotion of the people here. like i said, often feel unworthy. i don't always have something to add... but i always find something interesting to read.

I found the ledge right when the Dance came out. I came to find more information. I stayed to watch the dysfunction. I left because it got old. And now, I bounce in and out to look for more information. I like a lot of people from here. I just don't like fan discussions here anymore.
That's why I don't read pretty much anything on any board but this one. The hyperbole and the crazy is the biggest of many things that never, ever change.
I feel exactly the same! Start a club? ;)
Some of the fan discussions just seem silly to me :sorry:
Although I can imagine those things are just more interesting when you're still new and a bit more obsessed with the band. (note: I don't mean anything judgemental by the word 'obsessed', I'm just obsessed with other artists now ;) )
But I really like some people here, that's why I keep coming back.

I got on The Ledge in earnest a few years back after the big blow up on Mick's board. There was an old school fan spirit here with a touch of rebel to it that I really liked. We had some fun.
Me too. I know I was on Mick's board first, then BN.net & burnish, and then maybe The Ledge last? I can't recall exactly what order, but I grew tired of not being able to snark about the band on Mick's board. That, and the fanclub disaster. So I found this place. You still have to be careful what you say there, and you certainly can't talk about trading & bootlegs. :(

BN.net was just sooooo out there sometimes in a good way. I lurked there forever as well and then joined after being here and on Nancy's board for awhile.
I never joined Mick's board. It seemed too cold for me. I also used to go to fmlegacy legboard to lurk, but do not think I ever joined.

I used to post a little at the BN.net forum, and I would read a little of the Ledge. I finally registered and lurked, but was frightened to post; the sharp-tongued humor that appealed to me, also frightened me a little, so it took me a while to post. I felt, though, that I fit better here, than at BN, or later, Seven Wonders, an age thing, or sensibility, I don't know.
There seemed to be so many experts on FM here, I finally found a question I wanted an answer to, and posted a thread to try to find out what mic FM were using. It seems silly to me now, but I was nervous!
There was some point while back, where I was having so much fun with this community, I felt like I had a big crush on the Ledge. I spend more time here than I should, but I just enjoy it too much to stop reading!
p.s. I miss David O., and Dissention

I've been a member of the Ledge for almost exactly 5 years.
I think it all started pretty much when I got online for the first time and started searching for FM things. I first found all the download sites (Monique's site, Underground, Neil's site, Burnish, etc.) and then that lead me to the message boards.
I believe I joined the burnish board first but just felt like I couldn't break in at that time. I percieved the board as being very cliquey. People seemed to always be referencing "The Ledge" so I finally found it, joined, and stayed!
Why? Well I'm the only FM fan I know so y'all are pretty much the only ones I can talk about FM stuff with! Of course the best information flows through here and I still always find out what's going here first (as you all know).
I like to think that this is the most grown-up board, and since I'm 35, that appeals to me. But I also think this board consists of the most intelligent group of folks. I don't really post very often, (never did) but I have learned so much from so many of you. Just keeps me here.

wow. the previous five posts could have been written by me (ok, really three of the 5, but i love the two smiley posts in there!).
i've read through this entire thread, and what's struck me the most is how similar many of our experiences have been, and how similar our feelings about this place are.
(insert that rockin' group hug smiley here)
I joined right around the time of The Dance...I think it was the end of my junior year/beginning of my senior year of high school (so almost 10 years ago...wow!) I had really started getting into Fleetwood Mac when I heard that they were going to reunite and tour (I had been a casual fan since TITN came out since my aunt loved them and always had that tape or Bella Donna on in her car...I saw Stevie for the first time on TOSOTM tour when I was 9 years old). Anyway, I remember reading the Rolling Stone article over and over again and taping The Dance and also Behind the Music. So I searched on the internet, and as much as The Penguin has grown over the years, it was already the most thorough and best FM site IMO even back then. In a very short period of time, I learned just about all there is to know about the Buckingham/Nicks FM era from people on the Ledge as well as the other resources on The Penguin.
Back then Marty and Lis had a trade page with just about every audio/video tape you could imagine. That's where I got ahold of the majority of my videos. Sadly, after a while they shut it down because (and correct me if my memory is failing me), there was a big stink by some people about the tapes being traded. Lucky for me I had already gotten everything I wanted.
Anyway, I said all that to say that I think I started hanging out on The Ledge to get an idea of what was out there in the way of videos and then just kind of stuck around ever since...this year will mark my 10th year as a member. I probably didn't post anything for several months, and even then I bet I only posted a couple of times a year. I still don't post very often, but I read The Ledge daily and comment here and there. I still like it a lot; it's one of the few websites that I try to visit everyday.

i "ledged" it back during the dance. . .can't even remember the handle i used then (uh oh, another thing to go in the "you know you're old when" thread). honestly, i think the only reason i decided to get online was so that i could keep up with what was happening during the reunion tour!
i met a lot of good people, many of whom i'm sure don't even lurk here anymore. back then i think things were a lot more drama filled than they are now and it just wasn't fun after awhile. plus i was always moving around and it was hard to keep up with everyone else. came back in '04 after i finally bought SYW (i held out a long time because of christine not being on it), and have sporadically posted ever since.
that being said, this is the only message board i have posted on with any kind of regularity since 97/98. when i think that it's been 10 years, it feels very surreal and almost, dare i say it, frightening! :o
