Any of you girls nail fanatics? I mean, I am unsure what my normal nails look like. Take tonight for instance. The acrylic was starting to go, def time for a fill, when I looked down and thought, OMFG, how long has it been since I DID NOT have acrylic over my natural nail?!?!?!? That can't be healthy. Neither I'm sure is 90% of what I do, but I just thought to myself they must come off now! After PAINFULLY trying to do it myself (OUCHBLOODYOUCH) I said enough, and went and had them professionally painfully removed. The problem now??? I can't feel my fingers. I mean sensations aren't correct. I think it's just the shock of NOT having my extensions =0( Am I nuts??? (BESIDES the obvious...no peanut gallery remarks) or does anyone else understand the weirdness of what I am trying to say. OMG, and typing...are you kidding me??? How do I use my fingertips and not the nails themselves. WEIRD. And it's like my fingernail's are breathing, they are so paper thin. I swore I'd let them rest un-acrylic'd for a week, but I dunno if I can go that long. I'm just having a girly dumb moment and thought I'd seek equal nutsters.

I wore acrylics for a long time. I haven't had them for about 5 years now and my nails are fine.

FIVE YEARS!?!?!?!? OMG, I don't think I have had them off for 5 minutes, unless a new set is being put on cause my nails are just too icky to take another fill. It's my only vocally vain quality. lol. I mean, I just love my hands w/ long nails. Otherwise, I feel stubby like. You prolly have pretty slender fingers, mine are just Shrek-like. haha

I just found that I could type a lot better without the nails. and I found other ways to spend the money that I spent on the nails - like La Mer.
So now I'm just the opposite. If my nails get above the finger line I file them down because they bother me. If you think you might want to keep your nails off for a while, there is this great stuff called Nailtiques that will do miraculous things to rejuvenate your natural nails. You can get it at most of the beauty supply stores.

I just got mine filled yesterday. I get solar, American tip, w/ ultra pink. But yes, I know that sensation you're talking about when you take 'em off or lose a nail - like your entire nail bed is exposed and "breathing," and having your fingertips back. I don't like it. :D

How can you stand wearing those things?! Especially those square ones. I've never had acrylics, but I wore fake nails once or twice ages ago... They drove me ****ing insane! They felt really unnatural, and typing with them was weird.
Of course, my own nails are gorgeous, if I may say so myself, so there's really no need for me to wear them. :D

I don't like square tips either- I get mine filed oval-shaped. And American tips are not as "liquid paper" white looking as French. In other words, for fake nails, mine look real. I don't let them get too long, either, I usually get them trimmed whenever I get them filled.

I had acrylics once - for my senior prom and I kept them a few days after - it was hell. I couldn't type, couldn't dial the phone - I finally took them off myself...I hated them.
Plus - my grandma had acrylics for the longest time...then one day some of her fingers began to hurt - so she went to have them removed....her instincts to get them off was right - her actual nails had been all but eaten away..it was horrid....I can still remember the way her hands looked...they real nails finally came back and she never got acrylic again.
My real nails go through phases - sometimes they're ok lenght and healthy and good - they they crack and the cuticles get all nasty and they look awful (I'm in that phase right now). But I'm way too much of a cheapskate to spend money on my nails...it's just not my thing.

I used to go once a week to get my nails done. That was 2 years ago. They collect tons of bacteria and the main reason i dont wear them is because of my job. Actually most dentists wont (or shouldnt) let their employees wear them.

My nails are awful. Especially my cuticles. My girls love to have their nails done, and I took them to have 'em done this weekend. Sara had a mani, and Samantha had acrylics put on. I suppose I'll be getting them filled for her every couple of weeks now. Anyhow, I wanted to have mine done too (just a mani) but my cuticles are so dry, and they crack and bleed, so they hurt to bad to have someone work on them. Sometimes, I'll let my nails grow, but the minute the first one starts to break, I clip them all off.

ooh I love this thread. I have been dying to talk about my nails. I just got acryllics for the first time in December. I had them filled once so far. I am due for another fill this week. However, I was just looking at my nails underneath tonight and I think I am going to get them removed this week instead. They look brittle and um, a little dirty. Kinda makes my stomach turn, even.
I have square French tips and I have loved every minute of them since I got them.

did someone say "obsessed with nails?"

my nails are always manicured and polished. i consider it part of good grooming. plus, i wear seven rings, so there's a lot of focus on my hands. but seriously, i do my own nails - i've only had a manicure once in my life. and yuo know what? i do a better job! i keep my nails short and squared - just to the tips of my fingers. but i am a nail polish junkie. if i'm feeling down? easy - buy some new nail polish! best kind: sally hanson with teflon.
i think i owned a nail bar in a previous life. :p

Day 2
UGH! Ok, so really it's only been like 30 hours, but you get the point. I can NOT STAND IT!
Points into consideration:
Deanna right?? W/ the fam member that had problems??? I hear that. Something in me just said the other night...REMOVE them. I mean I am having no troubles, was just time for a breather. For someone that has their nails done FREQUENTLY, I am anal retentive as to how they are done, and whereas someone is putting the crap on, 90% of how they look thereafter is due to my maintainence. I don't take in my own tools, but that mostly just freaks me out for pedicures..which I love to, but am hands first. haha.
Square nails. Please....ALL about the square nails. Some people it works for, others not. What I have found most, is that the squareness keeps them stronger. If I file round the tend to get bent, or caught easier. Dunno, just a theory. Plus in everyday life, they sorta round themselves out to a nice natural shape. You know typing, doing dishes, etc. My fav way to have my nails is square tip, Chevron French, but that's just me. The stark white is nice for very special occasions. No worse than a stark color, just this one is white. I used to think that any color on my hands screamed FAKE, but after a while you realize it's not the color, it's the length, presentation, age etc. Anyone get what I am saying??? haha
If you are a blessed few that have pretty hands, and great nails, more power to you. My teen and early 20's showed constant breaking, splitting, and my pointer fingernails bend down on one side. WEIRD. When I first started getting my nails done, and I'd go once in a while w/out a fill, let my real nail grow out, all would start off well. They'd grown on their own, strong (after the initial shock of fake crap off) then start to wither again. I envy natural nails. IMO, it's such a feminine trait. Nails in general. It's just so girlie and pretty. If I worked as hard on my ass as I did on my nails, MAYBE I'd be better off. bwahahahah.
Anyway, I'm going to stand firm, and let my nails have a hiatus. Worse case scenario, they just HAVE to be done for Vegas in March. haha

The hiatus will be very good for your nails although I totally understand the vanity of it. However, my nails are naturally hard so they grow long without much effort. I have to work to keep them shorter. Sorry, I resisted braggin' as long as I could. :D  Both my Mom and Dad have strong nails so it was just in the cards.

You have to stand firm. It will suck. I remember the first time I had my nails done professionally (for my friend's wedding, her idea, not mine), after I took them off I was horrified by how my nails looked for weeks. But after all the crap came off, and they grew for a few more weeks, it was fine. :p Probably until Vegas would be just right. ;)
I love nails, as well, been polishing mine apparently since I was one and a half. I've always been very hand obsessed. I keep it realistic, though, my hands are fairly pretty so I keep the nails natural mostly. There is always a cycle after I had polish on them for awhile when they are brittle and chip easily, so then I keep no polish on them for a few weeks so they get nice again.
Sporting the Sally Hansen's no chip nailcolor in Diamond right now.

yep. for a gig once I had my nails done and after I took them off, I took 6 months for my nails to get back to "normal"
