Can anyone recommend a good facial moisturizer? Not a $200 jar of La Mer either, people. Preferably something I can buy at the drugstore (I can hear them gasping from here...) that doesn't cost more than $20.
I've used Purpose for years, but lately I'm getting lots of dry patches on my forehead, temples, jawline & chin (tmi!) I have an oily T-zone (tmi!) and sensitive skin in general (tmi!) Help!

Damn you gays - I said from the DRUGSTORE!
 I actually like a lot of Clinique's products (the gentle foaming face wash is fantastic.) Their yellow moisturizer that everyone uses is too greasy for me, and I never looked into anything else. I've been trying to save money as far as product goes (you know, so I can pay bills & afford food...) but I'm going to have to find something soon, even if it's more $$$.

there was a consumers report or something that came out a short while ago all about how the products like la mer were no better than the drugstore moisturizers (sorry everyone!!). in fact, the study specified oil of olay as being one of the best. i'll try to track it down and add the link.
personally, i use decleor products, and some clinique. but i have extremely sensitive and reactive skin (you look at my skin, and it turns red and breaks out). decleor has a great oil-free, mattifying moisturizer, paula. i have the same tee-zone issues as you, and i really like it. it actually blots excessive oil as it moisturizes. it's called matt finish skin fluid. costs about $40.
ON EDIT: my mistake - the study was specifically about reducing wrinkles. here's a write up about it:

The best moisturizer that I have gotten at a drugstore is: Aveeno Positively Radiant. It is a great moisturizer. It makes your skin brighter in appearance. Also, it is great, if you have allergies.

and I use Biotherm for everything else (medium price range). Even though the experts say that the expensive cremes don't work and that the cheap ones do the same thing, I just love this stuff! It's smells great, feels great, and my skin (I think) looks pretty good!

I saw that story on the evening news and you should have seen the "I knew you were wasting your money on that ****" look I got from my husband
But I also saw a "beauty expert" on Good Morning America and she said, don't spend alot of money on products that are on your body for only a few seconds, like cleansers, exfoliators, shampoos, conditioners and toothpaste. Spend money on products that stay on the skin, like moisturizers and make-up  Kinda makes sense.

Putting oil stright onto my face is not a good idea.
Hello - do you think I would have told you that on a whim? Have you seen my face? I don't mean that in the way of "my face looks so good and I use coconut oil on occasion for it" I mean it in the "I am the greasiest person in the world, including all other Italians, and I still use it on my face at times and it does good, and I don't break out more than normal, and my giant pores don't get clogged more than usual".
You know how your skin adjusts if it thinks it already has enough oil, it won't make more of it's own?
I only do it a couple times a week, though, and very lightly is the key - but it does good, holds all the moisture in. I wake up even skinned and pleasantly dryly moisturized. That is the whole point of oil, it prevents moisture from escaping your skin while also conditioning. As you've probably figured out, the natural oil that comes from your skin is, well, oil. I'm generally wary of non natural ingredients for skin, though I've learned which ones are good.
I think it is good to mix natural oils in with your other skin care regimine - grape seed oil, almond oil, coconut oil, vitamin E oil, olive oil, lanolin - at least once a week. I'm not just saying that, there are studies. Also, a lot of these skin care thingies people are naming have one of these ingredients (usually grape seed oil).
So my mom knew this lady, right? She worked with sheep, where lanolin comes from. Lady always had her hand in their "fur" and whatnot - anyway, this lady had the youngest looking hands mom ever saw, from working with the lanolin in the sheep fur. Like, totally preserved. Again, oils hold in your body's natural moisture.
Ho, sh*t, I just forgot this really good one...it's like, Alpha Lipoic vitamin E for your skin, I get it from Whole Foods...I was using it for awhile (it is fairly expensive, $15-25 a bottle) and it kinda smelled funny, but my skin looked really, really good (relatively, for me) from using it. I'll get back to you on that one. And I will go buy it again today. haha.
Also, I'm telling you, for your awesome exfoliation needs, you gotta get that pumpkin sh*t.
Some I've tried that sucked for me: Oil of Olay. I don't put many moisturizers on my face besides sunscreen and aforementioned, but I've never tried a drugstore brand that was good, like oil of olay. I mean one of the more expensive drugstore brands. My coconut oil was like, 3 dollars, so is lanolin. Grape seed oil is a bit more pricey ($7? $10?) but all that other shizz with weird chemicals never does me good.

You're missing out then. At least buy it for your hands and under eye area. :D
I'm glad you are happy with your L' Occitane grape seed oil cleanser thingy.
I don't really use soap on my face, it makes me break out like nobody's business. And clogs my pores at the same time. And dries my face for one day, then the next day my face is super oily and I have a bunch of pimples. I do use pumpkin stuff to exfoliate, toner from proactive once a week or so, and I have a home microdermabrasion thing. Honestly, I have to tell you the best thing my face ever found was the pumpkin stuff, and getting microdermabrasion and fruit acid glycolic peels at the asthetician. You gotta keep turning over those skin cells and unclogging your pores to keep fresh. And if you have big pores, even better.
Since you said you've been experiencing dry skin, you might have a buildup. I recommend you contact an aesthetician in your area and schedule a fruit acid peel and microdermabrasion, to get rid of that icky dry skin. The bad news is, it could cost you 80 or more dollars. I think the dermabrasion is 100 ish, the fruit acid peel less. But the good news is, you shouldn't need that again for awhile, and your skin will look great after. Seriously, I was very pleased with my results, and you know how crappy my skin is. For your skin it would probably be even better.
But for my shower, I use naturaly almond soap, all made of natural oils and smelly good almondy. Whole Foods. And since I know you'll somehow never buy it, I'm sending you some of that pumpkin sh*t. :)

For a cleanser I use one from Trader Joe's that has tea tree oil. It cleans great without over drying and doesn't leave my skin greasy either. Tea tree oil is a natural remedy for acne.
I like Lumene night cream. I also use Oil of Olay during the day and have for years.
I saw a report on that study mentioning that expensive creams did no better than the cheaper ones. There's no way to really know unless you do a 20 year study which is so expensive I don't think anyone would. But I suspect there isn't much difference. The study did mention that expensive products will have more exotic ingredients, like bees' testicles or whatever. Okay, not really BTs. So if you can afford those luxurious products then what the hell, why not?

True. Witch Hazel as well, though it is a bit more drying. I haven't found even a naturally type cleanser for my skin that does it well, and I still don't think people need to cleanse their face much and strip the oils, but I might try a tea tree oil thing. See how it goes. You, and most others here, have such nice skin that it is hard to translate what might work for me.

Wow, that is good. Oil of Olay night stuff just cocked my skin up really bad. Like, dry skin, but pimple city. It was weird.

I've seen those, too, but in researching some of the products - just their ingredients, you know, researching their ingredients to see what they are supposed to do - lots of the newer expensive ones really do have a leg up - not necessarily the ones that have been featured on shows or whatever. But the good products didn't have bees testicles or whatnot. Usually there is a mix of natural oils with sort of new chemical compounds derived from natural ingredients that the good expensive products have. And yes, sadly, a lot of the expensive products don't have those cool things but are still expensive.
I never buy expensive things in a drug store, really - if I'm going to spend the money, I really look carefully at the ingredients - and usually that means sh*t like LaMer, or in my budget, sh*t that costs $25 at whole foods.
It sucks, but there isn't much that is good between fairly cheap and really high end. But there are a few things that I have found.

Thanks. I think we're hardest on ourselves though. I didn't see your skin like you see it. Plus, the flip side of oily skin is less wrinkles! My ex is half Italian and the women on his Dad's side do not wrinkle readily. For that matter, neither do the men.

Yeah, they often have better ingredients. Lumene has hydrogenated oil in it, yuck. But I am not eating it so I figure that is fine. It has a lot of vitamins and minerals which I figure can't hurt. It does the trick too because my face remains dewey when I wake up. They have all different night creams, I'm not sure what the one I use is exactly called. It probably wouldn't be right for your skin though but I think they have creams for all skin types. I think it was about $20 so you might even be better off with the Whole Paycheck stuff. I'll have to see what TJs has for creams next time I go.

No, no, I'm sending you the pumpkin fruit peel acid thingy. Seriously, Paula. Seriously.
My friend Rain, who has nice skin, was all "I'm getting these weird zits on my neck, and over on my cheek, and blah blah icky blah". And I gave her some pumpkin stuff, and she was all "It made my skin so smooth and blah, all my zits went away, etc", and she bought a big ol' tub of it.
I have not used Keihls. IMO, less is more when it comes to your face skin. You should let your natural skin oils do as much as possible. I'll never forget that week when I decided not to use soap on my face...magical....but I still totally want to get some La Mer.

I keep a tube of the hand cream on my kitchen sink - and a little dab goes a long way. It's their #1 selling product for a reason, it freakin' ROCKS! And it smells yummy. The lavender one is nice too, but the original one is still my favorite.
As for Kiehl's - Bruce, you're being paged! (He's all about Kiehl's!). I'm in love w/ their abyssine eye cream, and the avocado eye cream too. My Nana, at 75, still has beautiful skin. She uses cold cream every night!  So I guess the key is keep that skin moisturized at night and sun safe during the day.
The one thing I don't like about my skin is the broken capillaries. It runs in my family. I would love to have them taken care of. My name is Bruce and I'm a Kiehl's addict.
The first step is admitting it.
There are two moisturizers that I use. Kiehl's most popular one is the Ultra Facial Moisturizer. Contains Vitamins C & E as well as squalane. It's lightweight and fabulous for combination skin. They also make this exact product with a sunscreen. I use this product in the fall and winter. A 4.2 oz bottle retails for $21.50 and an 8 oz bottle is $33.00.
The other moisturizer that I swear by is their Sodium PCA Oil-Free Moisturizer. I have turned many of my friends on to this product because it gives your skin moisture without a trace of oiliness. It contains pathenol as well as the sodium PCA which is a high performance humectant. I use this all spring and summer, both in morning and before bed. A bottle will last me a good 2 - 3 months. And you cant beat the price -- $15.50!!
Kiehl's products are high end without the high end dollar. They dont spend a penny on advertising so their sales are basically word of mouth. They do not do any testing on animals (which is important to me).
Their body wash, scrubs (body and facial), shaving cream, eye creams (like Livia, I use the creamy avacado and the abysinth creams), mask's and body lotion (their Creme De Corps gives Loccitane's hand cream a run for it's money) are all items I stock in my bathroom at all points.
I've been a Kiehl's fanatic for about ten years and I'm not bragging when I say that my skin looks fantastic!

Okay... call me a skeptic.
With that out of the way... does anybody have any anecdotal or personal stories about having skin that went from being like five miles of bad road to absolutely china-doll perfection? For all of the money that people spend on these creams, I would expect nothing short of a miracle. Alas, the scientific data on these products are not that compelling.
My theory is that whenever someone swears by a certain product or says that something is really effective, that person had really good skin to begin with naturally. Sure, these products may make the skin feel smoother, less scaly, or adds a subtle cosmetic glow, etc. But it's not like you are going to find a fix-all in a bottle. It's a very psychological phenomenon- if it's really expensive, it must be doing something, even if I am the only one who sees it.
Accordingly, I think it's a bit ridiculous for kids, i.e., anyone under the age of 35, to be using these really, really expensive potions that are formulated for much older, parched skin. It's like selling ice to an Eskimo- it's overkill. If you've got nice skin to begin with, all you really need is a non-comedogenic/hypoallergenic moisturizer with SPF to maintain.
As for me... my skin is a tragedy (freckles, discoloration, acne scars, moles), despite having tried EVERYTHING under the sun- Accutane, skin lighteners, masks, dermabrasion, retinol, Stri-vectin, SPF 60, etc. My diet is very strict (no meat, no junk food). I drink plenty of water, stay out of the sun, have low stress, exercise plenty, etc. On paper I should be the model of perfect skin, but if anything I am the total opposite. But, alas, this is the hand I was dealt, and I've come to the conclusion that nothing will improve things except for surgery :distress:.
At least I don't have any wrinkles!

^^^ I totally agree w/ this - to some extent. I do think genes have a LOT to do w/ it, so does one's lifestyle.
Even the chick at the salon who does my facials has told me: "There is no such thing as a miracle product - more expensive doesn't mean it's better...find what works best for you and stick w/ it." She did, however, stress that daytime moisturizer should have at least 15 SPF (she's a big fan of the Oil of Olay I use), and to use a night cream w/ salycilic (sp?) acid.

First brush your lips with a tootbrush (gently) to exfoliate all the dry skin then put Blistex on constantly! Like every 10 minutes. I know you're probably thinking, only Blistex, but it has to be the kind below. I swear it works wonders!

brush Yes, that is a trick I do periodically just to exfol them. As I do not have a brush here at work, I may use a handtowel. These lips just chapped today at work - I had no idea they were...so sudden...curse of the chaplip. Why now???!!!!
Well they aren't that bad...but considering mine don't...I do not like it whatsoever! OK...so I may have gone overboard...there is a little dryness to the top of the lip with some tiny flakes! ;)
I will seek out the blistex tonight...thanks!

I also brush my lips when I brush my teeth - and I then I immediately put some almond/vitamin E oil on 'em.

Yes, I'm resurrecting an old thread. Based on Jazzy, Livia, and Suze's recommendations, I tried the Olay Complete lotion with SPF, and I love it. It is one of the few products with sunscreen that doesn't make my face look slathered with Crisco. Thanks, guys. :xoxo:

I tried it too. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't any better than Purpose, which I had been using for years. I'm still getting flaky patches. I just bought Aveeno Positively Radiant & I lovet he way it makes my skin feel so far.

yep, it was probably the cussing.
sometimes the ledge locks up my whole browser, which pisses me off, because i have to close all the tabs i have open. it never happens when i'm on a PC, only when i'm on my ibook. cussing is the only thing that makes it not happen until the next time it happens. :D

^^^ Glad you like it! I love Oil of Olay night cream too - the one w/ salycilic acid. I also use Oil of Olay Ribbons bodywash. Not all the time, but it's convenient after I've been exercising, and it's my 2nd shower of the day. No need to use lotion after getting out of the shower. And it smells divine.

Okay, mine's really simple, but it leaves skin radiant.
Wash face with Dove white bar (with your hands or very plush washcloth), tone with Dickinson's pure witch hazel (does not strip face, leaves it soft), moisturize with Neutrogena Oil Free Moisture (it gives your face the moisture it needs without leaving it coated in a greasy mess...soaks right in!)
If you still need more moisture than the oil-free stuff, I would recommend using a serum before moisturizing. During the harsh Chicago winter, I use Mineral Care's Essential Serum with Green Tea (about $19.00 at Target). WONDERFUL STUFF!!!!
Body wash: Bath & Body Works Japanese Cherry Blossom...divine!!!!! It is soooooo sensual and feels great. The whole shower room smells great when the steam rises! Moisturize after shower with Japanese Cherry Blossom body lotion...non-greasy, sinks in.
Oh, I almost forgot! Face exfoliation: Just add a small amount of sugar from your kitchen to your favorite cleanser when you wash. Use gentle circular motion, rinse, pat dry, tone, mosturize. Only exfoliate once or twice a week to avoid over-production of facial oils.
Cheers!:blob2:

Great tips! I was actually going to ask about the exfoliating, if you can do it too much. Twice a week is good to hear. And I think it's the cold that's really screwing with my skin this year. Of course, it's always cold & snowy in Buffalo, but never quite this cold - or this windy.

'Cause you do live in a place with harsh winters (like me), remember to only use luke-warm water to wash your face, not too hot (tiny capillaries can rupture if the water is too hot). It is also a good idea to add a bit of warm water to your lotion to help it soak into your face.
Tip: Thinking of a naked Lindsey Bucky while moisturizing can help bring a rosy flush to your cheeks!!  At least it does for me, 'cause I love him!!:p
Enjoy! ;)

I exfoliate twice a day with St. Ives apricot scrub. It seems to be a no-no, but finally, at the age of 36, my acne stopped completely when I started that regimen. Coincidence? I'm not sure... but I'm not willing to test this theory. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
During the day I use anything with SPF 15 or greater... including Olay Complete, or Loreal Revitalift or Roc. Nothing extravagant. At night I've started using the Olay Age Defying mousse. I guess it's working alright, and it's soaking in pretty well. Next up in my medicine cabinet I am going to try the Shiseido intense moisture serum that I bought on a whim. It was a bit spendy, but Shiseido makes awesome stuff.
Anyway, this is all still preventive maintenance- almost 38 and not a single wrinkle! :wavey:

I'll have to look for that night cream; I've been needing one. I'm still using an old hand-me-down Mary Kay cream.
