CLEVELAND, Ohio (AP) -- Van Halen made a "jump" into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Monday along with Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, R.E.M., the Ronettes and Patti Smith.

A panel of 600 industry experts selected the five artists to be inducted at the annual ceremony, to be held March 12 in New York.

Van Halen was the 1980s hard rock quartet led by guitarist Eddie Van Halen, outrageous lead vocalist David Lee Roth, and later rocker Sammy Hagar, that put out hits such as "Jump" and "Dreams."

R.E.M. was the quintessential indie rock band until breaking through to mass success in the early 1990s with songs like "Losing My Religion."

Grandmaster Flash led the most innovative act in early hip-hop, and the song "The Message" was like a letter from urban America.

Punk rock poet Patti Smith and Phil Spector favorites the Ronettes round out the 2007 class.

To be eligible, artists must have issued a first single or album at least 25 years before nomination.

So glad Patti Smith made it in. I can't wait to see what she's going to sing. "People Have the Power" for sure. "Rock and Roll N*gger" would be spectacular.

Thank goodness they're inducting Patti and the Ronettes. Grandmaster Flash and REM are pretty cool, too. For once, they have a fairly decent lineup.

Don't you think Patti will perform "Because The Night"? Even though Springstein wrote it, it was her "hit"...

Oh, Christ-a-mighty! The Ronettes? They were really just puppets used by Phil Spector, and he's already been inducted on his own. They didn't write, didn't produce, didn't play, etc. Okay, so they had a string of hit singles 40 years ago, but when they were over, they were over. Meanwhile Carly Simon, Linda Ronstadt and, um Stevie, who have had enduring, enriching careers, continue to get ignored.

It will be very interesting to see if all of the Van Halens will show up, especially since there are now three warring factions: Alex and Eddie, Michael and Sammy, and David. And what about Gary Cherrone?

Ronnie Spector helped pave the way for female pop artists. It's about damn time that she got some recognition. The other girls did their thing, sure, but Ronnie is cited as an influence by more artists than people think. This organization is full of it, always has been, but for once they seem to have gotten something right.

What's really bull**** is that The Stooges and MC5 are still not in. Nor are the Shangri-Las. Laaaame.

so totally random -- but my mom went to high school with patti smith. she and her family lived a few houses down from my mom and her brother. apparently, she was way ahead of her time -- always making trips to nyc and hanging out in coffee houses reading poetry. even more random, the other night my uncle was talking about her brother -- i put two and two together and it turns out he used to come in and talk to us in 6th grade about drugs and alcohol. he fell out of a tree years ago while high and is now bound to a wheel chair.

i wonder who from van halen will show up?

Who decides which members get inducted? Is it up to the band, or the R&R HOF people? Just curious since Bob Welch wasn't inducted with Mac, and wondering if there would be a possibility of leaving any VH members out.

I have read, at the induction only Edward, Alex, Wolfie & Dave will be appearring (Michael Anthony is no longer the bassist in Van Halen, Having been replaced by Edward's son Wolfgang)

Seems most people have forgotten about Gary Cherone being the vocalist for a short period of time.

I can't see them inducting Gary Cherrone. But I think it might be cool for them to have both Dave and Sammy there.

Patti Smith ready for Rock Hall of Fame

NEW YORK, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- Patti Smith's impending Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in New York brings warm memories of her late husband.

The singer, songwriter and punk rock pioneer said Monday that former MC5 guitarist Fred Smith, who died of a heart attack in 1994, was hoping she would one day be inducted into the Hall of Fame. "At the end of his life," she recalled, "Fred counseled me when he was ill that if it did happen to be happy about it and feel good about it and not rebellious.

"So I'm certainly happy. I know that Fred is proud, too."

Smith will be inducted on March 12 in a New York City ceremony that will also honor Van Halen, R.E.M., The Ronettes and Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five. The show will be taped for broadcast later that week on VH1.

Smith is finishing up work on an album of cover songs that will be released later this year.

"80s?" Hmmm. Wasn't their first album out in 1977-78? The one with "Running With the Devil" on it? I was in the 9th or 10th grade when I saw them live for the first time, and that tour was for their second album.

Edit: Yep, I'm right. (In my best Patsy Stone voice, "Don't QUESTION me, Eddie!" LOL)

I could've sworn I'd seen them on the Diver Down toour for the first time but I guess it was Fair Warning or Maybe Women And Children First. They were wild, wild boys. David had a bottle of Jack he kept swigging on stage but I swear there had to be iced tea in it otherwise he would've fallen down drunk.

Take it from someone who was backstage for many VH shows in the 80's, Dave's JD bottle WAS filled with ice tea. A simple prop. As I recall, everyone drank tequilla and Corona beer then.
And it was Eddie and Alex who were the real guzzlers then.

The night after I saw them for the first time, we were at a biker party (don't ask!). This chick was running around bragging, "I gave Alex Van Halen a blow job and he autographed my t*t," which she gladly showed to anyone and everyone.

Good times. :D

I thought so. A friend of mine was their road manager for a time during the Sammy years and I guess it was really bad with Eddie from what he said. I think Alex might have been a little more successful with his rehab.

The Ronettes deserve to be inducted based on "Be My Baby" alone. Production by Spector aside, what a sonic achievement. Carly Simon, Linda Ronstadt, and Stevie Nicks would kill to have a song that will actually be remembered as such (if at all, quite frankly) 75-100 years from now.

when I used to see shows in Tulsa, there was a law in place that if a musician was on stage performing with a JD bottle that artist would be arrested upon leaving the stage for "public intoxication".

Many artists such as Van Halen, Motley Crue and .38 Special would pour the JD from the bottle and refill it with iced-tea. A law official would be backstage to make sure the JD was poured or else the show would not go on.

Edit: Here's a new article about VH's induction into the Crock & Blow Hall of Shame, (Wonder why Rush has YET to make it? They've been around longer than Van Halen and others who have been elected - That's not a slight against VH either.), so it appears 'almost' all the members 'may' appear.

SAMMY HAGAR Comments On VAN HALEN's Upcoming Induction To Rock N' Roll Hall Of Fame

The following report has been issued by Billboard.com's Gary Graff:

Van Halen's appearance at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony on March 12 "could go a lot of different ways," according to (ex-Van Halen vocalist) Sammy Hagar. That said, Hagar -- the group's second frontman, from 1985-96 -- tells Billboard.com he has high hopes that the famously combative group will take the high road on that particular night.

"My hope is that everyone lets everything go and we go there in complete respect of each other and in a loving way, with the attitude that 'I couldn't have done it without you' towards everybody," says Hagar, who received the official word of Van Halen's selection at his Cabo Wabo Cantina in Mexico, where he and Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony have spent the past week jamming with Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith in a newly developing side project called Chickenfoot.

But he also notes that, "The biggest fear for me is there'll be animosity and 'I won't talk to that guy' and maybe some harsh words towards each other or some sly remarks in speeches ... and it's not out of the question that that could happen. But in the end, no matter what happens, when you hear the music you're gonna go, 'That's one of the greatest rock'n'roll bands in the world, ever, and well-deserved the inauguration into the Hall of Fame."

Hagar says he hadn't spoken to anyone other than Anthony about the induction but planned to put in a congratulatory call to drummer Alex Van Halen. He expects that manager Irving Azoff "is gonna try to spin everyone together somehow" and says he'll "go with the flow" with induction ceremony plans, which Hagar expects will include a live Van Halen performance.

However, Hagar deemed talk of a Van Halen tour this year with original frontman David Lee Roth and guitarist Eddie Van Halen's 15-year-old son Wolfgang on bass speculative and voiced concern for that particular turn in the band's course.

"Wolfie's a great guy; I love Wolfie. But I don't think Van Halen should bring a 15-year-old kid to replace Sam, Dave and Michael Anthony," Hagar says. "That's a lot of pressure for Wolfie. Just 'cause he's Eddie's son doesn't mean he can go out and play in arenas and perform and entertain an audience for two hours. I would love to see Eddie and Alex get behind Wolfie, with a kid of his age singing, and produce the record for him and help him launch a career. I'd rather see it go that way than come out and say 'Wolfie's the bass player in Van Halen and maybe singing, too.' Van Halen's got way too much history to have that put on him."
