View Full Version : An Idea For A Cool, Creative Change For The Ledge

Myself, as I am sure all of us do, love this message board. Now, this primarily is a message board where we discuss our favorite artists from the Mac and such. So I was thinking........

As is known, some threads that are created on this board recieve many, many views and comments and others recieve very few. So wouldn't it be kind of a cool creative idea to have a kind of grade scale to rank our threads, and since this is a music board, we could give out gold, platinum, multiplatinum and then diamond certifications.

I think this would be just a creative way to just recognize those threads that are popular with their peirs...... So my thinking is as follows. Here is the scale..

1. Gold Thread: 500 views and or 30 replies
2. Platinum Thread 1000 views and or 70 replies
3. Double Platinum Thread 1300 views and or 100 replies
4. Triple Platinum Thread 1650 views and or 125 replies
5. Multi Platinum Thread 1999 views and or 150 replies
6. Double Multi Platinum Thread 2500 views and or 185 replies
7. Triple Multi Platinum Thread 3000 views and or 225 replies
8. Diamond Thread 3500 views and or 260 replies

So, I just thought that this could be a cool and creative way to infuse all of our love of music into our daily board life. So, people in charge, take a look at this, and feel free to make comments and suggestions and things.

Take Care,
Ethan

Yeah, although I think we could do it for the WHOLE board..... And under people's profiles it could say how many threads of each catagory they have started or whatnot..... We'll see what comes of this, I would really like to see it happen, and it's refreshing to see that it intrests you as well.

i have to say, i totally agree.

ethan, you're new here. hell, I'M new here - and check out my join date and number of posts. i can only speak for myself, but i wouldn't presume to come into a long-established, much-respected board and say it should be changed. this is the second thread of this nature you've posted (that i've seen) in the past month or so, no? if you don't like the ledge, don't come. if you like another forum better, stay there. don't try to make this one into another. i think most of the posters here think the ledge is quite perfect as is. it can actually be seen as a little insulting to suggest otherwise to the people who worked so hard to make this board what it is, and maintain it daily.

And I happen to think this is quite a cool idea

Although it's always nice when people are trying to think of cool new things, and I definitely appreciate that, this idea reminds me of when people here have noticed when someone has a post that names people for whatever reason, but doesn't name them, and then they say "I never make these lists" and then a bunch of other people talk about how they never make the list, then at other times people joke about being threadkillers, or how many posts they have, or whatevs.

In other words, I don't really think the idea of posting being a competition, and something that you score points for and keep track of, and essentially score in such a way as to imply "interesting" and "not interesting" is necessarily the best idea.

I mean, things like the aforementioned might not happen, but I can't help thinking they probably would. If I know my ledgies.
I'm not actually sure whether people really care about being threadkillers, or making people's random lists, or posting a lot, but sometimes when people talk about it it seems like they do.

Also, you can usually just tell if people like a thread or are interested in the subject. Sometimes good stuff gets lost or overlooked, and that sucks, but it all usually works out okay. I appreciate the rating and scoring of things as much as anyone, likely more, a lot more, but not in this case. :)

Ratings? Who cares?
On Seven Dunders, where I RARELY go(maybe once a month, when ya'all are being lazy with the posting!), I don't even know what the "Karma" is for, or how you do it.......... I mean, who CARES about that ****? It's stupid, and juvenile, IMO.

Yeah. But that's the thing. Probably no one would care about it, until it is started, then a bunch of people start to care about it. Because suddenly it is made into a competition. Human nature, I guess. Before it was started, the only people who cared about it were the kinds of people who would come up with the idea. Which is fine, people like games and stuff, or whatever.

But also, it looks like some people over there like to be nice, and giggle, and praise others, and be happy and fun, so they give Karma out as a blessing and day brightener, just a little boosty-poo for a friend's self esteem - not so much as a competition.

You know, like "hey, Homie, I love what you just posted, and I agreed with it, Karma for you!" with a big smiley sparkly wand weilding wizard emoticon to make you feel all warm and smooshy and appreciated and cozy and loved and secure and twinkly and worthwhile and interesting and popular in every way.

yeah, I don't care either.

But like I said, I like when people try to think of cool new stuff, and is anything so perfect that it can't be improved? Generally speaking, of course.

NO, there's a significant difference, IMO. Karma, and ratings, are about POPULARITY.
"What are you eating, and doing", aren't about anything like that. Those, IMO, are about the FAMILY at the Ledge, sharing our days, and lives, with each other.

Just like a phone call, to your Mom.
That's the way I see those, anyway(and appreciate them).

Totally. Even the Karma thing on seven wonders backfired and they had to remove the negative karma because people were just dishing that out to people they didn't like.. regardless of thread content. IMO rating threads by number of views or having the number of threads you have started under your name is just asking for trouble

im with you homey -

i agree . . . "trouble"

and "trouble" is my middle name. . . :]

ok Hey there Ethan -
i guess what most folks are saying is that it isn't a popularity contest . . . it's not who has the most posts wins kinda thing. . . everyone posts stuff that may not be interesting to everyone . . . the mad-lib thing i did didn't appeal to everyone . . . and they didn't participate . . .but that doesn't mean that the small amount of posts in that thread should be graded compared to the thread anticipating new fleetwood mac dates. . . thats obviously gonna generate huge interest but it doesn't mean the less visited threads are less valid to the people who are keeping up on those . . .
Do You Understand this? You are very enthusiastic and post quite regularly . . . if you value the number of posts or views on your threads then you should take the advice that many have offered you and try to contain alot of your stuff in one thread . . .(then that thread will garner all the views and posts and get you your double diamond status as opposed to the ten that you would have started individually. . . )
do you understand this point?
people suggest this to you but you seem to ignore that part of their posts . .. i am not trying to bash you man - just asking you point blank if you read these suggestions??

There is currently a way for everyone to rate threads for their own use and i feel it is unnecessary to assign a rating to a thread simply because it is popular (hats off to Homie again).

i was jokin with you in anothr thread that you should be careful or people will start to believe that you value the number of threads/posts/views as opposed to the quality of the posts . . .
well i don't think this thread will do anything to stop them from thinkin that

Well, I mead I do agree with you........ But I think maybe you all misunderstood my point. I didn't mean for this to be a popularity contest thing by any means......... It is either this board or maybe it was that OTHER one, but they had a little icon that showed if a thread had a certain ammount of views and or replies, and called them HOT TOPICS........

I didn't mean for this to be a popularity contest. People will post in whatever thread they may. The point of this thing was to just infuse a little bit of musical life into our ledge life........

I definately didn't come here massively change this place. I love the ledge and the people because we ALL have COMMON INTRESTS........ I wouldn't come here if I didn't enjoy it.

SO I mean, I guess the idea won't go through, and that is alright I guess, i just thought that it would be a cool idea. Guess the majority of people dissagreed, but that is fine, we are not made the same and we do not all have the same beliefs.

you were suggesting giving "status names" to popular threads. . .how is that not a popularity contest?

and we are all here talking a lot about music and our musical lives - we ARE ARLEADY "infused" with music or we wouldn't be here right?

OK: So we have gotten over the fact that this is not supposed to be a popularity thing, whatev. Let's poll the people and find the final concensus. If people want this, then we talk to Marty and Lis about it. :)

All opposed post NEA. :p

Yeah, cool. It is nice to see another person who didn't rush to judgement. Not that I think the idea is great, and I've outlined my reasons why,
but I appreciate the effort of the idea, and don't think people should necessarily be slammed down for trying new things. And I also think a vote is appropriate, to be fair. That is a good way to discern what people really want.
My point being, what if someone does come up with a new, great idea? It shouldn't be slammed out of hand. It should be slammed based on its merit! I haven't talked with Mr. Ryan recently, but I have just been reminded of one of my favorite things about him - openness. He's a nice guy, he listens to everyone, and then makes his judgement based on his opinion of the best things. Perfect, that is what everyone should do.

I have decided, for outlined reasons, that this isn't the best idea. But I don't know everything in the world, and don't represent the tastes of everyone.
The Ledge is super great, but I bet in part it was made so by the new ideas of various people. Not everyone has the best idea, but no one will know if you don't put your idea out there. Just saying. Right? Yeah? Someone could have the most brill idea ever, but if we are closed to the possibilities, and already think something is perfect - well, then we have become Stevie and her ideas of setlists.   Which as we all know, is counterproductive and suckulous.

Goodness help the person who thinks anything is perfect.

But I think maybe you all misunderstood my point. I didn't mean for this to be a popularity contest thing by any means.........

well ethan, how did we miss you point - you said it yourself right here below - "Rate threads that are popular"

I think this would be just a creative way to just recognize those threads that are popular with their peirs......

and then you go on in anothr post about crediting the people who start popular threads . . . .

..... And under people's profiles it could say how many threads of each catagory they have started or whatnot..... :

you describe your idea as a popularity thing then try to distance yourself from your own words?
confusing . .. .? - u bet

..... So, I just thought that this could be a cool and creative way to infuse all of our love of music into our daily board life.

and i really don't see how it infuses anybody with anything - your description of your idea is really just changing something that already exists (thhe icons for hot threads etc . . .)

this reminds me of when you kept posting that you had "new" stevie demos up on your website - and then we go check it out and find they are demos that are quite common and all over this board . . . but yet there you were crowing about how "POPULAR" your website was cos it had so many hits -
i gently pointed that out to you then that that just seemed wrong and that what does it matter how popular your web-site is if you artificially pump up your numbers by getting people to visit it under false pretenses.

it seemed to be about popularity then and it seems to be about popularity now - it just doesn't seem like a genuine request to change the ledge "to infuse" us when really it just seems you want to see your name up with popular threads . . .

it just seems to be your track record at this point so please don't be surprised when people respond the way they do . . .
they just dont feel you are being totally honest about your intentions -

if we really want to change the ledge for the better i think we should all kick in and get michelle some counselling - that Biattcccchhhh is just crazy . . . .

:D :xoxo: (love ya michelle - just wanted to drag you through here - i know how u love it

so ill go to bed instead. . .

^^ that sounds more bitter than "wasted away again in ledgie-ville" of course holding "ie" or something out longer. I couldn't think of anything to fill the space  and jeesh how many times do i have to say? If you wanted it on there~you should have replied to the other thread:thumbsup: ;)

Aw. That's really sweet. :xoxo:

Well the count in this thread is 3-1 against this idea. So I guess it goes nowhere. :sorry:

I don't see the point of making a poll. It's pretty obvious the majority have said no

He ALWAYS resurrects his own threads. As soon as he realizes no one else is going to post in it, he pulls it back to the top.
