I am sure some of you all already knew that this guy is my favorite author. His stories are amazing. SO I asked him a question on his website a couple of days ago and today I GOT AN E-MAIL FROM HIM!!!! I had a really rough day at school, so getting this really brightened up my day. I just wanted to share this with you all, as I am sure some of you all might think that this is cool......

Much Love,
Ethan

MY ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Mr. Sheldon,

I am a 16 year old aspiring author. I can honestly say that you are by far my favorite author.

My question is this. When writing a novel, does the story come to you all at once, or does it kind of develop as you go along?

Thank you for your time and I wish you all the best,
Ethan Kinkle

HIS RESPONSE:

Dear Ethan:

Thank you for your email and kind words. My stories definitely develop as they go along. I am sure you will find the same true with your writing.

Good luck to with your writing. It sounds as though you have found your passion.

Warmest wishes,

Sidney Sheldon

So, i just thought I'd share that with you all....

The best part of my job is getting to meet authors. Most in person, but some are email buddies. It is very cool Ethan, the first time I got an email from Gregory Maguire, I nearly fainted.

I ADORE Gregory. However, I think all of his adult titles since 'Wicked' have been lacking. 'Son of a Witch' was a big disappointment. His children's titles, however, are very good.

He did tell me the other day that he isworking on a short novella, 'A Cowardly War' about, you guessed it, the Cowardly Lion. This is going to lead into the final installment of the Wicked Cycle, which he plans to wrap up in 2008.

Congrats! That's how I felt when Anne Rice responded to my concern for her well-being after New Orleans was evacuated for Hurricane Katrina. I continued our communications after that...she is AWESOME as well and very easy to relate to in many ways. Even now that she is writing very differently...still love her!

Writers are VERY different than musicians and other artistic people, I have noticed. I have gotten response from the majority of my fave writers and corresponded with them. The McCourts are the BEST! My Irish heritage led me to their books. I continue to chat with them.

I wish I could get in touch with my ALL-TIME fave author, Carrie Fisher. Yup...THAT Carrie Fisher is a fantastic writer.

Seriously? That's cool. I love Frank McCourt.

Heck, writers like to write... they will shed letters and emails like musicians on stage shed sweat, and most are faster typers. I forget who it was now but I remember sending some small piece of info to some author in Kentucky and getting back a long long letter on fancy stationary, and it kind of scared me at the time! :)

When I was about 20 I jerked off looking at a back cover photo of John Irving in a wrestling outfit.
Does that count?

I knew Carrie wasn't gonna post about this, so I had to.

Maybe if I email him that, he'll email me back. I mean, he's 30 years and a good 50 pounds from that hotness. But he has written some of my favorite books.

OH MY GOODNESS GUYS!!!! I sent him another e-mail yesterday shortly after I got his first one, and guess what was awaiting me when I got home from school........ ANOTHER ONE!!!! Here's the transaction:
MY MESSAGE

Mr. Sheldon,

First of all I just want to thank you for taking the time and responding to my e-mail. I showed my parents who both thought it was a very kind gesture. I then called my grandmother who is the person who got me reading your books (she is as big of a fan as I am as we always have talks about your books when we get together) and she simple couldn't believe it. Also, thank you for your kind words. I have quite a few major intrests in my life, including writing, music, medicine and teaching as well as athletics (I don't play but coaching and teaching would be great) so it is hard for me to know for certain what I should do, but I feel that I was blessed with creative talent, and that I should put it to good use.

As I said in my last e-mail, I am only 16, and don't exactly know how to get my work "out there". For Christmas, I was given a book about getting published but I thought I would ask you if you had any suggestions since you ARE the master storyteller and have sold millions and millions of books. Nobody better to ask in my opinion. For your information my book is fiction and would be a thriller, much along the lines of your novels.

Again, I just want to thank you for your time, and your e-mail made my day.

Thank You Very Much,
Ethan Kinkle

HIS RESPONSE

Dear Ethan:

Thank you for your email.

There are two periodicals that I highly recommend for new writers. Both are available online. They can be found at www.writermag.com (The Writer magazine) and www.pw.org (Poets and Writers magazine). Both are great resources and full of useful tips on how to get published, find agents, etc. Nearly all agents and publishers require query letters first. Then if they are interested, they will request a copy of your manuscript. If you send out unsolicited manuscripts, they will tyupically be sent back or destroyed.

Ethan, because of your age and different interests, I wish you well in exploring all different venues and your passion will emerge.

Warmest wishes,

Sidney Sheldon

So needless to say I am starstruck and so excited........ This is so awesome, I can't even describe it..... AMAZING!!!

Besides Angela's Ashes and 'Tis...YOU MUST READ Teacher Man! You don't have to be a teacher like me to appreciate it of course, but he obviously would be anybody's DREAM teacher! Can you imagine?? ;)

His brother ran for office in their home state, and I love their collective books together. I'm sending them some copies to sign now. Very famous family...but unfortunately...easily forgotten in this day and age.

Speaking of lewd and crude...if you like books that are risque, you must try Carrie Fisher's Surrender the Pink! It was overlooked for her first novel Postcards from the Edge. Her last two were well written too. :p

Teacher Man was the first McCourt book I read! Then Angela's Ashes (I saw the movie before I read the book, actually)... I haven't read 'Tis. I could've sworn we had it, but we probably lent it to someone. I keep meaning to get it out of the library.

Wow! :xoxo: Good on ya...your in the minority! I can send my copy after my friends are done with it. We have a lil' book club thing where we beg/borrow/trade and chat. I probably should set up an electronic board!

Nothing wrong with wanting to be pen pals. I have several authors that are email buddies, but remember these guys are busy. Sometimes it will be a week or so before I hear back from one of my authors, especially if they are on tour.
My advice is, not to push it though. If it happens, it happens. Otherwise you risk becoming an internet stalker.
