View Full Version : To You, What Makes Stevie, Stevie?

So, what thing about Stevie is your favorite? What is it that distinguishes her from anybody in music?
For me, first of all, I am absolutely in love with her style. Nobody does it like her. She is so classic and timeless, she will never change.
Also, her voice is so incredibly powerful and unique. Nobody has one like her.
Bottom line, I love the woman. I'm a total chiffonhead to the max. Go, take me to court for it.:p
Anyway, what is it about her for you that makes her so special?????

I totally know it. OH MAN, just thought about it, I completely forgot to mention her lyrics, although for me that kind of fits in with her style....
Her lyrics are just perfect. I try to write some that sound like hers, but you can;t duplicate perfection......... I just love the woman, as I have said many, many times before.:p :] :xoxo:

In my opinion it's her ability to be haunted and haunt even herself to the point where her songs reflect who she really is, what she truly feels and it just leaves her and the listener totally haunted. She's just THAT powerful. I feel so haunted saying this! I think I have the chills.[/B]

This is not an easy question to answer. Indeed Stevie has THE voice and amazing lyrics but her whole persona is what makes her. Her presence is so amazing and her ability to fill the room with her voice is just outstanding...and lest we forget the chiffon, the boots, the tambo, the twirls, the gold and braid dance, the welsh witch...OMG EVERYTHING about her... *is overwelmed with thoughts of too much fabulousness*
Damn, I'm such a chiffon-head :D

I think that her whole ~essence~ (no, I'm not talking about the pot) and look makes her ~Stevie~.
I'm dead serious. I have like 500 handkercheif skirts (not because of her, but because I like the whole "botique hippie" thing), and when I wear my platform granny/combat boots (I like to be tall and kick ass), people are all "oh that's very Stevie Nicks." If you look in fashion magazines, when they show the whole chiffon & lace looks (which are coming back), there's almost always a Stevie Nicks or "gypsy" comment. If she dressed in like.. jeans and a t-shirt, I don't think she'd give off that vibe, you know?
Wow, this might be the windiest post ever.

Yes, even having some neighbours... :D
By the way, what makes her unique for me it's mainly her songwriting, how she can use mysticism and an oneiric style to communicate a deep realism. And then her voice so true, so brushed by life, so capable to get to people's souls.

Or from any singer in the history of recorded sound for that matter?
Besides, realtime digital harmonizers didn't exist in the '70s (unless there's some truth to those theories of Ian Curtis' voice having been lowered by one). Since the early '80s they've been used in live concerts, and not just for voices but for instruments too. You probably didn't realize that I was exaggerating, chappo. ;)

What makes Stevie Stevie:
Stevie's voice and the way she uses it and her confidence and willingness to express herself no matter what comes out, or how different it is. Also those qualities and the awesomeness they lent to live performances. Her improv. Her personal ability to work with many people, and promote her career, while maintaining quite a bit of artistic integrity as well as loyalty to a band.
That girl had a vision, and went after it with a vengeance, and now it is an inalterable part of our culture, her vision is. The one she believed in and went after.
Let us all just stop and ponder the enormity of what she has actually accomplished. That isn't a lucky fluke. She didn't largely get by on her looks, though she used them impeccably, for the good of her self and her band. She's like the Oprah of girl rockers - "I don't believe in luck, I think that success is when preparation and perspiration meet opportunity".
Stevie prepared and perspired, worked and worked and practiced, and did what it took to make sure her preparation and perperation did meet opportunity. This is a big part of why I don't love when people discount her or the mac in simple terms. She worked her a** off, for years and years and years, for her/the Mac's career. People talk of her as if she were one dimensional, a tossaway 70's and 80's persona, a style.
She is an extremely talented singer, songwriter, businesswoman, performer, and publicist. And, of course, visionary. Even if some of her visions are less than spectacular, the ones that are good are great, and there is an unparallelled level of commitment either way. Which is perfect, because sometimes you hit, sometimes you miss, but you can never hit if you don't try, and if you always try it is inevitable that you will sometimes miss. But you will never hit if you don't try because you are scared of missing.
I fell in love with her voice three separate times before I ever saw her or knew who she was, so I don't really care much about her fashion, or look. Although I like it, and I am always pleased at how fricking gorgeous and charismatic she is. Natch.

Stevie makes Stevie, Stevie! There is no one else like her! She has made her own path, her own image. Her voice is one of the most recognizable voices out there. Even if a totally new song came on the radio, we would "know" it was "Stevie". (and wouldn't that be wonderful!)
There has never been anyone else like her, at least not for the last million years or so, nor will there be.
