View Full Version : books i got for christmas
hi - my husband purchased two books for me for christmas. having a 4 yr old and a 2 yr old i don't have much time to read. in fact, i didn't even know they were out there! the first one is by sandra halliburton - read between my lines - the musical and life journey of stevie nicks. the 2nd one is the fleetwood mac story - rumors and lies by bob brunning. are these worth the read or should i just return them (without hubbies knowledge of course). how true are they? i'm sure they've probably been discussed somewhere on the boards. what was the final verdict on them? thanks

I don't know about the Bob Brunning book, but the rumour about the Sandra Halliburton book is that it's nothing new. I would keep it anyway, maybe for the pictures? But I don't know what the pictures are like.
How thoughtful of him to get them for you- very sweet. :)

Bob Brunning's book is an okay read. He gets a few things wrong but it's a good history of the band. Don't expect to find any big revelations in it though.
As for the Sandra Halliburton book, well it's pretty terrible in my humble opinion. The woman has no talent whatsoever as a writer and no insight into her subject. It's just quotes from magazine interviews you'll find on here on The Penguin or the Nicks Fix, linked by her bland writing. The only original interview is with the head of the Arizona heart charity (I forget his official title) that Stevie is involved with. I would only recommend it if you really know nothing about Stevie's life, as at the very least it has most of the known events of her life and things she has said publicly about them, put together in chronological order. A better insight would be to read the actual articles readily available for free on the net from which Halliburton has taken her material. The book has little to offer hardcore fans or those who enjoy biographies. The pictures in the book aren't that amazing either. She also has a section at the back where fans talk about how Stevie has affected their lives but really it's nothing you couldn't find on any messageboard.
I stupidly bought it and kept it, only because I'm a completist but really I find it bewildering that she managed to get it published. At least those Edward Wincentsen books, which were also badly written, had great photos in them.
A good Stevie biography really needs to be written.

A good Stevie biography really needs to be written. For as storied of a life as she's lead, one would think it'd be a no-brainer for some author with actual talent to write the definitive Stevie Nicks biography.
Oh well, if we hope and we pray -- maybe it might work out someday. ;)
