What is your Resolution (s) ?

I think a better way of looking at resolutions is as something to enrich your life. So you feel like you're adding something positive instead of depriving yourself of something you love. This year mine was to meet new people. I'm not sure yet what it will be for next year.

Well, the most obvious for me would be weight loss. I'm not gonna whine about that cause only I can decide to do what I need to lose weight, but I've heard form people in the kinda shape I am that it s harder to quit smoking than to change what you eat.

^ Do you mean to say that it's harder to change your eating habits than it is to quit smoking? I've done both, and I think it's way harder to change your eating habits. Smoking is physically & mentally addictive, but it was actually pretty easy for me to stop (although those drunken cigs are becoming more & more frequent lately after 6&1/2 years...) But that's just one addiction, one habit to break.
To lose weight, you're changing everything - what you eat, what you drink, how you exercise, etc. We joke around about how "it's all about food" but really, it kind of is. :o We eat every day. It's up to you personally to make healthy choices & decide what & how you want to eat. I personally find that planning is key - you're much more apt to eat something healthy if you have it planned out, all ingredients readily available. Same with exercise - I just assume that I'm going to exercise every single day. If you're in a rush, or don't plan things out ahead of time, you may just grab junk food because it's fast & easy.
If you need come tips or moral support, David, you may want to look into The Biggest Loser Club. It's online, you sign up & they send you emails with real people's stories about how they're doing, healthy recipes, exercise tips, etc. I don't think it costs much. Good luck!
I don't really make resolutions. I am going to officially stop the drunken smoking (which end up being 3 or 4 cigs a month) because it's just stupid for me to do, and I notice that I'm starting to do it more & more. I also try to thank God every day for the life I have.

Go, David!
I am with SuzeQuze on the resolutions, but upon some reflection, here are mine:
- to hang in there as best as I can with a newborn and a toddler, after feb 20th (his scheduled section)
- to stay healthy and alive
- to work on peace inside and out
- to make it to the Webster Hall 2008 NewYear's Ball in a glorious new dress! :woohoo:

Here's the link, if anyone wants it. Looks to be about $20 a month.
http://biggestloserclub.com/
Weight Watchers really works for many people too. They have an online membership as well, I think it's more than Biggest Loser though. In any event, I personally do OK on my own, but if some of you feel you need more support & guidance, these clubs/organizations are awesome. $20 a month is probably less than you pay for cable, or internet. Plus, cut down on take-out & junk food - I'll bet the money you save would pay for your membership. :wavey:
Also - little changes are more effective than most people realize. Just switching to diet POP or iced tea, using light mayo/salad dressings, increasing fiber/whole grains/veggies in your diet, etc. can make a huge difference. Oh, and everyone should drink more water. :D
OK, sorry I started preaching there. :o I'm no diet expert, but these things have helped me, so I thought I'd share.

I'm not big on resolutions but I am hoping for a nice peaceful year. This one went by too fast for me, and I don't like that. I want to enjoy the company of those around me and hopefully meet some new friends as well.
I've cut way back on a lot of bad habits (smoking, take out, etc), so I plan on maintaining that.

I was told by my sister recently that resolutions are old-school and now people make New Year's "intentions". That way there is no accountability! :D She's from Santa Cruz, so maybe enough said on that.
I usually don't do the resolution thing, but my intentions are to complete the Boston Marathon, to live within a budget and pay off debt (that conflicts with going to Vegas in March, but I'll work that into a budget somehow or will just say...hey it was my intention) and to pick my battles at work and stop getting frustrated with every little thing.
I also intend to lay off the hard alcohol during my training and to never post while drunk again. :D

eh. Screw new year's resolutions.
mine always go something like this:
try to diet-I always end up eating more
pay off bills-end up further in debt
be nice to people-.....aha....ha ha.....
yeah right. like I'm THAT naive to think that would happen.
exercise-I end up more lazy than I was before.
so I'm not making one.

I don't make resolutions...well at least I never have...
But this year? I want to start reading 8 weeks to Optimum Health after the New Year - and take what I read and implement it into my life. I am doing great with exercise, diet has suffered a bit, but I'm not as stressed about it since I am now working out consistenly again.

I have fallen in love twice and I have felt pain twice like nobody's business. One just didn't work out, the other one died. Don't ever say you don't want to fall in love because that means you don't want to live. Rise above, Curtis, rise above. It hurts but don't tell yourself that you don't want to fall in love.

I don't usually make them either, but I'm seriously going to get back on the wagon with following the suggestions in that book. I would love to lose about 30-40 lbs so I can fit into all my clothes again. And I now live in an apartment complex with no less than two fitness centers, so I'm kind of running out of excuses here.

The book encourages you to move toward actions that make you feel good about yourself. You make small changes week to week that add up. You can recondition yourself to want to do things that are healthier. It can't be a punishment for being bad or it will never work. Also, weight loss is a side-effect of doing things that make you feel good. Just read it! :xoxo:

The book encourages you to move toward actions that make you feel good about yourself. You make small changes week to week that add up. You can recondition yourself to want to do things that are healthier. It can't be a punishment for being bad or it will never work. Also, weight loss is a side-effect of doing things that make you feel good. Just read it! :xoxo:
I know, I know. I did read it. :) I'm not looking at it as a punishment, just something I need to do for myself, and this new year is seeming like a better opportunity to make a fresher start than most.

Im with you markolas, Im using this opportunity to make badly needed lifestyle changes, and the first is an easy start date to remember. I also feel moved to be as good a mother as I can for my son. What do you do and say when someone you love very deeply is doing something you hate very deeply (i.e. smoking)? I refuse to have him choose. It's not fair to him and it would be one, big disaster. I'd rather just walk away from it.....Sometimes I feel he loves those things more than me. I'm at a loss. Is walking away the right thing to do?

He says he is trying to quit, but I haven't seen effort. It got unbearable in NYC. I stayed in a smoking hotel room and sat in smoking sections of places. They were even smoking in the car. I try not to say anything cuz he already knows....for months now.....and he still does it in front of my face. He even smoked 5 minutes before midnight...right before we kissed.

I don't know if you're just asking Carrie for advice, if so then just ignore this.
People are probably sick of hearing about my experience, but I'll say that I never thought I'd be with a smoker. Then I met Gil (late partner). When we first got together, I thought to myself that I would get him to stop within a few months...that if he loved me he'd do it.
After awhile I didn't even think about it because I was so in love with him that it didn't really matter to me that he smoked. I regret not talking with him more about the smoking, though, because it did hasten his death when the cancer spread to his lungs.
My point, though, is that I'm not sure someone's smoking is worth breaking up over this early into the relationship? I shudder to think what my life would be like if I had rejected my great relationship so early on.
Smoking is really bad, but I think different than if he were a drug addict or something. You love him deeply--that is huge. Does he have to "choose" right away? Can you keep working on the relationship and then when it hits the really serious moment (i.e., moving in together, etc.) address the smoking? In the meantime, just let him know how much you hate the smoking and that if he wants to grow the relationship he'll have to quit at some point? That way he has time to reflect on it and the make the "choice" at his own pace?
Maybe there's more going on than the smoking, but when I read things like "I love him deeply", then I think the relationship is worth working on.

That seems rude. I dated people before who didn't smoke, and never once did we stay in smoking rooms or eat in smoking restaurants. Hell, those places are skanky. I can go outside to smoke. And would never smoke in the truck. I always asked if I was unsure. I mean, sheesh. I respect the fact that others don't want to deal with it. That being said, I have had bf types want me to quit or cut down. Which never bothered me. They understood I was gonna stop when I wanted to and it was never a deal breaker for them. I didn't hide it, so they knew it was part of the guy they were getting.
It's a tough call man. But it sounds to me like it isn't just the smokes. Sounds like it's becoming a power struggle.

I'm a smoker myself, and I have to admit that in the past I haven't always been considerate of the people I dated, but I mostly dated people that smoked also, to avoid messes like these. I once dated a guy that asked me to quit, but he wasn't worth my effort, if you know what I mean. I hate to say it, but I think that if a person really wants to, he can quit smoking. Especially if it's to keep that special person close. I'd say that'd be plenty of motivation, if health alone isn't going to cut it.

i'm proud of you!! returning to college was seriously the best decision i've ever made and no, it's never too late to finish your education :thumbsup:Thanks, hon. For the longest time I was happy with my decision about quitting, because I had a great job and a great apartment, and I wasn't struggling, so I didn't think that dropping out was going to affect my life in a major way. Then when I lost my job last fall I realized that it was all an -channeling Lindsey here- exercise in denial. That's when I learned that I had nothing to fall back on, and that great jobs like those only come around once in a life time. I was facing a job as a cashiere, or worse, for the rest of my life and it scared me to death. Not to mention all the people around me that were my age and had degrees and great jobs and were buying houses and stuff like that. Luckily, I found a job that allows me to both pay for college and have the time to study. If I put some effort into it, ofcourse. ;)
So, to any youngsters who are reading this: finish school!

Well, if we do stay together, I will just book my own hotel room and sit in smoke-free sections....without him.
Him smoking in the car took the cake. We got in a little tiff after we ate on the way home. Lighting up in the car seemed like a big "F-You. I'll do what I want.".....cuz he knows very well I don't like that the most.

No....if you do stay together, then he will stay in nonsmoking rooms and go outside to smoke. That is what considerate people do. If I were you, I'd consider going a little easy on telling him to quit right now, but I would be firm about the hotel room, smoking in car, etc. He does need to show he can compromise on those things.

I had a bf who smoked a lot, all the time. This was before I smoked. He couldn't smoke inside buildings, b/c it was illegal, and we didn't have a car, but he smoked everywhere else, constantly.
It seems like your boyfriend could wait, and not smoke in the car or the hotel room - but it might not be a power struggle, some people just smoke a fricking truckload, they can't be without one.
That doesn't mean you shouldn't insist on a few basic smoking politenesses, I'm just saying his intentions might not be unsavory.

You are very wise, grasshopper!

Curtis, Kris is being a total d*ck. He's literally putting your health at risk! I smoked for years, and I never smoked near non-smokers in cars, at houses, in hotel rooms, etc. It's inconsiderate & rude, to say the least. :distress:
Do you think he's doing it on purpose? Like, trying to get to you so bad that you'll break up with him?
I agree..he could be sabotaging....
