EDIT: Warning! Long boring post ahead, mostly about paint color & furniture. Don't bother to read any further if you don't care.

Man am I bored. Soooo......what would you say your decorating style is in your home?

I guess I would label my house as modern traditional. Maybe a smidge of country here & there. Not contemporary at all. I have a Cape Cod style house built in 1948, it's about 1100 square feet. The bottom half of the house is dark red brick, and the top dormer area has sage green vinyl siding. I have a covered concrete patio off the back of the house, and a detached 2 car garage.

My living room/dining room combo is painted off-white with two walls glazed taupe. Carpet is beige (never again...) and furniture is dark blue. I have hard wood floors throughout the house, but I like the carpet in living areas.

Downstairs (teeny tiny) bath has a very similar color scheme, peel & stick tile on the floor and the original ceramic tiling on the walls. Thank God it's white with barely noticable small brown flecks in it - I've seen some really horrid tile colors. My brother-in-law's in gray & pink. Blech. Oak vanity, off-white marble sink; getting a bit dated.

Home office (actually a bedroom) is sage green & hunter green, seperated by chair rail molding. Built-in oak bookcase built by hubby in this room. Hardwood floor.

Guest bedroom is pale yellow, decorated in a classic 1950's style. I put my grandmother's old bedroom set in there, and one of her crystal block lamps (which I notice are back in again.) Hardwood floor.

Upstairs bath has pale blueish green walls & light gray ceramic tile floors. I love the color (Babbling Brook), but it's a bitch finding accessories & towels & stuff - blue doesn't match, neither does green. Dark gray is best, but last time I was at Penney's & Target, they didn't have any. F*ckers. White toilet & pedestal sink, extra wide shower with swinging glass door.

Master bedroom is a deep cinnamon color, with a dark taupe on the ceiling. Bedroom set is medium color wood, made to look old & distressed even though it's not. Queen bed, 1 tall chest & 1 mirrored dresser. Berber carpet.

Basement is partially finished, so half is laundry/utility room, the other half is our bar/family room. We're going to re-do it this spring, since it was last done in the 60's, I would guess. The tile floor is white & I think it's supposed to look like stones. The walls are classy wood-look paneling, and there's (I swear) a mural on one wall, which is turquiose & pink & cartoonish & depicts some sort of water scene. We spend so much time down there (gas fieplace & big screen TV) that I want to make it more modern & homey.

God, I am so bored.

A) You couldn't possibly be as bored as I am, waiting for dial up, with my mom's "story" playing in the background. (All My Children). I was watching this cool show about Steve Jobs and the evolution of the ipod. But no.

B) Is "dark cinnamon" dark reddish brown? Is that oppressively dark for a room, or does it somehow work? Dark taupe...I really can't picture that color. Anyway, I'd love to have a room dark reddish brown, but I'm afraid it will close me in and depress me.

C) My decoration could best be described thusly:       :distress:  .

I like to randomly paint things, because every surface in my apartment was white. Sometimes, I don't quite finish painting. :wavey: To be fair, I was unemployed and bored off my ass during most of the painting. I'll clean it up a bit sometime...

Wow, you are bored. :) I should be working, but I'd rather do this, so here goes:

Mine's very eclectic - I get that from my mom and the house we grew up in - every room had a different theme.

My house was built in 1980 and much of it shows how dated it is. The exterior is the color of (take your pick): a Taco Bell building, The Simpsons' house, circus peanuts (that horrible marshmallow thing) w/ terra cotta trim. When I do get it repainted, I want either off-white or a light gray w/ cobalt blue trim. I had the roof re-done a couple years ago - w/ white shingles. I also got new garage doors, also white.

I re-did all the flooring when I bought it. Cobalt blue, marbled ceramic tile in the foyer; black and white checkerboard ceramic tile in the kitchen (a la OSOTM album cover but not because of that, more about that later); and light gray carpet everywhere else. I splurged on the carpet padding, at the advice of my real estate agent.

In my living room, I have a gray, overstuffed, contemporary sofa, loveseat and chair set. I have a celestial area rug under the coffee table and celestial things adorning the room (like candle votives, wall hangings, a clock, and stuff). I have the 2 Bob Masse posters matted and framed, as well as the big TISL poster that hangs over the TV. Two of the walls are painted purple. There's a limestone floor to ceiling wood-burning fireplace as well. And my treadmill, up against the sliding door. It does get used. :p

My kitchen is slowly being transformed into a 50's diner. I started w/ the floor. I bought an oak light fixture on Ebay and spray-painted it silver for that stainless steel look. My coffeemaker is red and I'll be replacing my other countertop applicances w/ red ones whenever they break. Or maybe I won't even wait that long. I've replaced all the cabinet and drawer pulls w/ white and silver circles and I want to put a stainless steel backsplash on the wall w/ the stove. I just recently purchased a real 50's dining table, w/ the "marble" top and chrome trim. The chairs are new, but look old. They are red, sparkly vinyl. I friggin' love them! It took me forever to find what I wanted, for the right price (thanks, Craigslist!), and that's why the floor was done when I first moved in. I should have extended the tile into the dining nook originally, instead of putting carpet there. So, that's the next project. Good thing I still have some tile left, in the original boxes w/ the serial #, etc. so I can get the same ones, hopefully. I'm also going to paint the dining nook red. The light switch plate cover there is the Dance album cover (most of my light switch plate covers are Mac or Stevie related). I just got an OSOTM one made to replace it. Before the table, my Rhodes keyboard was there, now it's in my bedroom cuz that's the only place I could put it. My bedroom is huge, so luckily there was room for it.

My bedroom is being transformed w/ a Moroccan/genie bottle theme. I've got lots of mosaic candle votives in there and my bedding and pillows are gorgeous! 2 large walk-in closets, my keyboard and my sink/vanity. The master bath is next to get done w/ that same theme. It's currently celestial w/ cobalt blue rugs and the original, icky 80's stick-on beige tile floor.

The guest room isn't much, sort of a tropical thing in there, I guess. Bed-in-a-bag bedding in pastel colors, just a purple sheer thing over the window and a fake palm from Michael's. :) The bed is comfy, ask Bruce!

My office is the room ebay threw up in. Most of my FM and Stevie **** is in there. Computer and Total Gym are in there too. The Total Gym will get used more in 2007, I swear it! :) The walls are light pink, leftover from the girl who used to live in it.

The guest bath is celestial, but with Mardi Gras colors and beads thrown about. I'm going to re-paint it lavender to go w/ the floor better (stick-on tile, but it's pretty); and to cover up my hair dye accidents on the walls.

Okay, now I have to get to work. :)

I hate soap operas. Plus, it is leaching my valuable cable time. The other night i had to go to bed and read because my dad wouldn't stop flipping channels, and i was getting pissed off. There was stuff i wanted to watch, but apparently he only flips channels constantly. oops, going to store, write more later. I finally get to go somewhere.... stupid parents.

Livia - I LOVE retro kitchens, that is so cool!

I forgot to mention that my downstairs bath has a celestial theme. And my kitchen? Well, I was trying for a Mexican look.

The cupboards are OK, not great but not terrible. Kept them cuz I couldn't afford to replace them. Darkish wood. Painted the counters to look like granite (beige & brown tones.) Put in a taupe cast iron sink. Ripped out the WHITE EZ BRICK backsplash (insert barfing smiley here) and put up Talavera tiles I get straight from Mexico. I love my tiles, I'm very proud of them. The walls were yellow paneling, which I painted a pale cream color. The soffit above my counter was painted a dark reddish brown. The crappy linoleum was replaced with a tile-look laminate.

Hey, btw - do you guys hire people to do you remodeling/decorating/repairs? We do pretty much all of it ourselves. I enjoy it. Plus, remember - I'm cheap. :D

Simple and quaint is the theme of our house, though there's plenty of electronics in the living room and in the master bedroom. The living room is bone white with wood accents (Except where the wall-furnace system was located, it will be painted over some time this spring, As will the master bedroom...Health forbiding that is)

The dining room is paneled in dark wood and the kitchen is sky blue w/Sunflower accents.

The bathroom is painted colbalt blue, and when we get the time the floor will have nearly the same color linoleum tiles (Just replaced the floor and finished replacing the sewer lines, so the bathroom is now in great shape. Replaced the faucet in the sink after the infamous '3 foot geyser in the bathroom' incident.)

The second bedroom is a pig-sty, mainly because almost all of my Mom's belongings are in there. That room will soon be cleaned and organized (Will be boxing up the material scraps so Deb can make blankets/quilts) and the 2 of 3 sewing machines will be moved (Including Mom's ol' cast iron 1900 treadmill powered/electric Singer sewing machine, which is now priceless)

We wont do much more work on this house (We've been here since Oct.12,1992), because we havent decided yet if we'll tay here or move in the future (We're leaning towards getting out of this town and closer to a bigger city/town.)

Anyways...
I know what color you are talking about now. It's been popular recently, so I've seen on T.V. that it usually looks really good.

Wow, your kind words about my apartment may have inspired me to finish painting...maybe....

Livia - your house sounds awesome inside! I especially love the moroccan/genie bottle thing, I would have that. I don't love the 50's diner thing in theory, but it sounds really cool to have it in your house, if that makes sense.
I really want to put pretty, non white tiles in my bathroom and "kitchen", but I'm kind of scared. It has ugly "white" linoleum right now. But it's only an apartment, I don't own it. Still, I like my house to look cute and pretty with lots of colors.

Paula - I had someone come to my house once and do some "use what you have" decorating. They rearrange things and look in the basement and bring up old treasures. I love how they did it. I had them come back another time to do some more. It was like $200 for 2.5 hours of their time. They move furniture, take you to stores ... give you a paint plan for rooms .... it was fun!

Home design is kinda my obsession right now since I am destroying my financial and mental health building a house. :distress: For some reason I can't give two wits about the decor in my city apartment (a melange of 90's Ethan Allen and mid century modern and Bauhaus), but I am fretting over the doorknobs in this new place. I originally started out wanting to do something kinda country-modern-beachy... but as I conducted my "architectural research," I got hooked up with a midcentury modern architect (a former colleague of the Saarinens) who sent me totally overboard with the whole international modern/case study house style- the kinda stuff that architectural buffs love, but most people find kinda cold/austere, etc. It's impractical on so many levels, especially with all of the glass. And when people ask me, I tell them honestly that I don't care if people can see me traipsing around the house in the nude. In fact, I'll even get additional tattoos to make it more interesting for them. :p

Anyway... this is my work/nightmare in progress... hopefully finished in time for summer at the beach!

I live in the smallest one-bedroom apartment in the country. Most would say it's a jr. one bedroom or a two room studio. It's a typical SF apartment with hardwood floors, bay window, high ceilings.

It's pretty minimalist, as I don't like having a lot of stuff. I have a beautiful brown leather sofa that I bought last year and a beige armchair. Since both are rather boring colors, I highlight with burgundy throws and pillows. I mainly decorate with orchids and framed photos, plus a few pieces of art that I've collected over the years.

Yours is my favorite so far. :D I didn't know it was small. It sounds nice, though, I like the minimalist thing with splashes of color. My apartment is more like all color with splashes of neutral. It is small as well, except for my bathroom which is inexplicably huge and could make a nice little office. You know, if there wasn't a toilet in it? I'm kind of being shocked at how big a lot of these people's houses are. Where we live, those houses could be half a mil or more...

My apartment has no real decoration theme...homey? I don't know...I do lean toward more neutral colors, I like Earth tones a lot...I live in an apartment so all the walls are white, which I HATE.

A hardwood floor in the closet?? Kind of a fancy finish for a closet... I could understand if it was already there, but if I had to put in new closet flooring (due to wear and tear??), I would probably just peel and stick some of those colorful interface flor carpet tiles. They're pretty inexpensive and come in all kinds of neat mod patterns, piles, etc.

Add me to the big-bathroom-in-a-tiny-apartment club. The floorplan in my current city apartment is really wacked out and very, very inefficient- a third of the space is literally hallway and foyer. My living area is tiny, but I have four large closets, including a walk-in closet that is about as big as the kitchen, which is smaller than the bathroom. Oh, and there are hardly any right-angles in the place. It's in an old converted 19th Century warehouse with barrel vaulted lofty ceilings, which some design genius decided to cover with popcorn paint at some point. Unfortunately my place overlooks the rooftop playground of the primary school across the street. Oh well... guess I have to be careful about walking around clothed if I am at home during the day. Otherwise, I have a peek of the Hudson River, New Jersey and the downtown financial towers. It's cute... I could however live without the transsexual teenage hookers throwing shade on Christopher Street on weekend nights.

Is that the one over in Commack? I have driven by it a gazillion times but never went inside. Those better be some fine pillows... $80 could buy you a brothel-full of pillows at the Pottery-Barn-Williams-Sonoma-Hold-This-West-Elm-blah-blah-blah outlet. I have a feeling that when I am ready to decorate my new place, I'm going to have a pillowgasm.

A hardwood floor in the closet?? Kind of a fancy finish for a closet

Hell yeah. The master bedroom has hardwood. Why not the closet too?

It's a ridiculous sized closet. About 12x10. It might as well be over top floor wise too.

It's mostly those rolling wardrobe rack things. Four of em. Only 1 level - not the double decker to the ceiling thing with two poles. And I have bins on top them that have blankets and **** like that in them - some other stupid things too. But it is pretty full. Also have a couple small shoe rack things. I have to admit, I do have about 17 pairs of boots. But not that many shoes.
Hey, a guy has to have stuff to wear. Winter jackets, sweaters, flannels, and that kind of **** take up a lot of space. Plus 4 suits and a tux take up room too. As do jackets - gotta have black leather, biker, bomber, suede, levi, levi with sherpa collar, trenchcoat, etc. And I never throw away good clothes.

That's the thing in Atlanta and apparently elsewhere. People build these huge houses and then skimp on stock dors with 14 foot ceilings and foam molding. Yuck!

The ballgown(s), however, appeared infrequently until the bitter end of the relationship, when I was in Tara alone at night with several empty pitchers of martinis, supine on the Steinway while belting out Oh My Man I Love Him So.

I purchased my home in the beginning of 1996. I've done a lot to it...painted it inside and out (I am all about color), added french doors, had almost all the flooring redone (hardwood and tile) and basically gave the place a huge face-lift. I dont really have a set style, I just know what I like. I love to decorate, so maybe my stye is eclectic with a touch of gothic thrown in. Lots of wrought iron, velvet sofas, candles everywhere, tiffany lamps...it's pretty. My dad collects art, so I dont have any prints -- everything is original oils. I share my house with 2 cats and my guest room usually has someone in it -- currently, my best friend Patrick has been living with me.

Actually, it's a joke with my friends. I often fall asleep in my green chair, so when someone calls and they ask, "What are you doing?" and I say that I'm reading or watching TV in the green chair, the next thing that I normally hear on the other end of the phone is, "Goodnight".
