We peruvians does not celebrate Thanksgiving, Christmas is the celebration of peace, joy, family union, thanks to God, etc....

We hace a dinner at midnight (turkey often) and then we open gifts. Children have lot of expectation, they can't wait to this moment.

But I've been 3 times in US for TKSgiving and it's very nice. So.. what do you like most?

I like Christmas much more. I like it more because I tend to see my family more around this time. We get together for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Not to mention, I love buying gifts for people. Christmas is a pretty big deal at my school considering its Catholic. I also see myself going to mass a lot more often in the month of December. The Christmas Eve mass is usually packed at our church. Only bad thing is that we haven't had a white Christmas in about 5 to 6 years. :distress:

As much as I love the true meaning of Christmas, the commercialism and stress can be overbearing. In many ways it would be great to see Christmas become more like Thanksgiving.... no pressure to buy. buy. BUY!! and drive all over the southeast trying to please everyone so the next year will be bearable.

thanksgiving. i can't stand the stress and commercialism of christmas anymore. i wish it were reserved for children ... in fact, i told my parents and friends i didn't really want anything aside from spending time with them.

^Agreed.

Christmas sucks anymore because people think they need to buy gifts to feel important and to have something to share. That sucks. Why spend the time and effort looking for gifts when you can be spending time with your family. It's overrated.

Thanksgiving, it is. Yummy.

We don't celebrate Thanksgiving so...

I do have to say that New Year's is my favourite holiday...there's booze, food, no presents, and lots of fireworks. I always make sure I'm at the biggest party!

I hate to admit, I like neither...Christmas brings back very bad family memories, and now that my Mother is no longer in this existence, Thanksgiving is just another Thursday to me.

That's what I was thinking. While Thanksgiving it focus is more "festive", Christmas has become all about PRESENTS. What did you get whom and how much did it cost and what did you get and guess it'll go back and I don't know what to get and blah, blah, blah....

I truly love the essence of Christmas, unfortunately it has been buried so deep under piles of commercialism and stress.
I also get so tired of the annual arguement of whether it's okay to say "Christmas" or have a tree or is that person gonna be offended or why can't we have this if they have that, blah, blah, blah.... :distress:

I'm with Brian on this one. I love Christmas because I love to watch my daughters face light up with joy when she receives her gifts, and I absolutely love to give to people. This will be a special Christmas for us this year because Samantha is here now, and it will be our first Christmas together. But I can't help but to be sad because Jason isn't here to enjoy it with us. I feel lonely during the holidays. After almost 4 years, I still miss that man terribly. Thanksgiving gets on my nerves only because I have to spend it with family I don't like, or even claim... haha.

Thanksgiving for sure. Not really a huge Xmas fan, since:

1) I'm not Christian.
2) The commercialism and greed that others have already mentioned.

I love Christmas, it's by far my favorite holiday. But I also hate what it's become - I mean I was watching "gift ideas" on the Today show - "affordable" was over 100 dollars...for one gift..I don't think I spent that collectively on my entire family.

I hate the commercialization, I detest those stupid inflatable yard snowglobes...and I HATE the mania and greed and stuff people have already mentioned....

So I try to retreat into my own little world at Christmas - and it usually works ok...:D

I agree 100%. I probably enjoy Christmas more, but not when you take into account the stress associated with it. So, I'll vote for turkey day.

I gotta go blow a bunch of money that I don't have, tomorrow, so that I'm not EVIL.

Like a putz I voted for the wrong one. Anyway, I meant to put Christmas. My mother's family were all from the U.K. so we didn't have any Thanksgiving traditions. My boyfriend is English too and couldn't care less about it, so like Brian said, it's just one more Thursday. I've always loved Christmas though.

ha. Like THAT'S gonna help...:rolleyes:It's better than showing up with nothing, when they've all bought something for me(AFTER I've asked them not to!), looking like Scrooge. FWIW, this is relatively new behavior. Only after Mom died, did they start getting stuff for me.

Other than a newer truck, there's NO gift that I really want, anyway.

I like Halloween best to be honest, but I do prefer Christmas over Thanksgiving. The lights, cutting down our tree, Christmas music, seeing someone's face light up because you found then the perfect gift. Oh, and my kick-ass cookies, of course. :D

So I try to retreat into my own little world at Christmas - and it usually works ok...:D

I do too, something I finally learned to do a couple of years ago. I hated Xmas for about 15 years because the commercialism and forced gift-giving depressed me. I like to give gifts throughout the year, not related to a holiday. And then all the parties and pressure to "get together" during the Xmas season. Don't get invited to crap 11 months a year, and all of a sudden I have more activities than I can handle.

A couple of years ago, I developed a new strategy to deal with Xmas. I take what I like about it (the lights, some of the music, the egg nog lattes, and our traditional Xmas eve family party) and I leave out the rest. I don't do Xmas cards, or buy gifts if I don't want to, and I tell others not to get me anything. Except this year I asked for donations to my marathon charity thing.

I also make no plans on Xmas Day. In past years, my family would pressure me to do something with them even though we all got together the night before (and even though we see one another about once a month). I finally said no and it's wonderful. Last year I didn't even leave the house, just ate Trader Joe's snacks, drank champagne, and watched TV with my cats.

To answer the poll: I like Thanksgiving more. There's no pressure around it and it is a good excuse to reflect on the good things in life.

Q: "Stevie, can you tell us fans why you don't sing songs from your 1986-1994 era?"

A: "Yes. And my dogs couldn't go to Sydney with me~"

ya cant get more commerical than Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer:

""Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" is a popular Christmas story owned by St. Nicholas Music Inc. that has been sold in numerous forms including a popular song, a television special (done in stop motion animation), and a feature film. Rudolph was created by Robert L. May in 1939 as part of his employment with Montgomery Ward."
