DENVER, Colorado (AP) -- Heavy snow blew across Colorado on Wednesday, canceling hundreds of airline flights and shutting down a major highway, as a winter storm plowed onto the Plains after pummeling New Mexico.

The National Weather Service posted blizzard warnings for most of eastern Colorado and adjoining sections of Nebraska and Kansas.

Up to 5 inches of snow had fallen by the morning rush hour in the Denver area. Two feet of snow was possible in the foothills just west of Denver, with 2 to 3 feet a possibility farther north. Up to 20 inches could accumulate on the Plains of eastern Colorado. Wind up to 30 mph could pile the snow into high drifts.

United Airlines, the busiest carrier at Denver International Airport, canceled more than 630 flights for the rest of the day, and Frontier Airlines planned to cancel up to 40 afternoon flights, representatives said.

"This is a step that we need to take because of what Mother Nature is throwing at us," said United spokesman Jeff Kovick.

Eastbound Interstate 70 was closed for 90 miles from Limon to the Kansas line and police shut down about 60 miles of westbound I-70 from Colby, Kansas, to Burlington, Colorado. Travelers stalled by the closures starting filling Kansas motels during the morning, said Stan Whitley, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation.

Dozens of schools were closed in eastern Colorado and northwest Kansas, along with many courthouses in eastern Colorado.

The lumbering storm dropped more than a foot of snow in the state's southwestern mountains Tuesday, with 19 inches at the Wolf Creek ski area and 17 at Durango Mountain Resort.

"We've been waiting for a big storm to hit, so this was the best early Christmas present," Durango Mountain Resort spokeswoman Loryn Kasten said.

The broad storm also spread rain across parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska on Wednesday, with snow in western Kansas and Nebraska, where police reported vehicles sliding off I-80 in the Nebraska Panhandle. Ice accumulating on branches and power lines also caused power outages in the area.

The storm rolled into Colorado from New Mexico, where roads around the state were still snowpacked and icy Wednesday. Numerous schools opened late or remained closed.

Up to a foot of snow fell at higher elevations of northwest and west-central New Mexico on Tuesday, and snow and sleet closed sections of I-40 across eastern New Mexico and in the Texas Panhandle.

Albuquerque International airport was closed for several hours Tuesday as snow covered runways.

Nothing here...Oklahoma had a chance of a White Christmas, but the storm system for this upcoming weekend will pass to the South.

As for the current weather, it is sunny outside, but rather cold with the dry air front passing through.

Thanks. I was supposed to take my nephew to the airport tonight but it's closed and his flight is cancelled. Everything else is pretty much closed. It's snowing sideways. My house is stocked so no worries there. My neighbor came over and plowed out the driveway this morning with his mini snow plow thingie. It's all covered up again. I might sneak out before it gets too dark and take a few pictures.

There's a lot of people around here who could probably use that right now. Denver braces for another blizzard

DENVER, Colorado (CNN) -- First Christmas weekend. Now New Year's.

Denver is bracing for another blizzard beginning Thursday, with up to two feet of snow expected -- a possible damper on New Year's weekend travel plans.

The National Weather Center issued a winter storm watch for Thursday afternoon into Friday afternoon.

Denver International Airport is prepared for the worst, a spokesman said.

"The forecasts say anything from three inches to -- that's the best case -- up to 20 inches, which is worst case," spokesman Chuck Cannon said.

"So you kind of have to deal with it as it comes, but we need to make sure everyone is prepared for the worst case, and we'll try to deal with that."

Last week, a two-day blizzard stranded thousands of people at the airport as they were trying to travel for the Christmas holiday, one of the busiest travel times of the year.

More than 3,000 incoming flights were canceled or diverted during the 45-hour shutdown in Denver, The Associated Press reported. At the peak of its closure, 4,700 travelers were marooned at the airport, according to AP, and the delays rippled across the country.

Denver International Airport fully reopened on Saturday.

I'm going to spend part of the afternoon chopping up the ice and slush at the end of my driveway so that it doesn't get covered and freeze over again. That will be hell.

Yeah. It is. Her entire move has been a disaster from day one. Everything that could have gone wrong has gone wrong. Moving van in a ditch twice. So all the stuff went into storage. Fly by night locals moved one load to her house and disappeared without getting paid. Can't get phone hooked up. I could go on.

On the bright side, her neighbors brought her baked goods, a scrabble game, a few bottles of wine, and loaned her towels and a snow shovel. So that's pretty cool.

Deanna and Chris, please be careful. Stock up on bread, milk, and liquor. Sounds like you're going to need it. Don't hurt yourself shoveling, and please be careful driving. Here's hoping for only 3 inches!

I'll pass on the liquor but at this point I could use some valium. I just came back from chopping up the ice and more shoveling in the driveway. I hope this storm misses us.

Hey, Chris... if you get blizzard snow, take more pics of your yard. It's bad now, I'm dying to see it if you get another 20 inches! I've never seen as much snow as you have now, let alone another blizzard on top of it!

 Don't worry I will take more pics. I'll have nothing else to do.

There's no snow here, and I have nothing better to do either, if it makes you feel any better. I'm bored to tears.

Wow, no bread? That must've been really weird. Although I think I remember encountering that here just before a storm. I hope you don't get too much snow!

It was weird - the produce section was empty, the bread area was empty...I was shocked that there was a full case of milk...but there was. It was just weird - and the lines were awful...but now I've got everything - I can just stay home this weekend...I'm just praying the power stays on...

I already had some liquor in my fridge  Just a six pack of those Smirnoff Ice things....

It's ugly out there. Still - I made it to work...pretty much there are only 5 of us who made it in today - no one else could get here....I think Denver got it worse if I'm not mistaken - but we got it pretty bad too....and of COURSE this is when Clancy ends up getting the runs

Ouch. It sucks cleaning up runny dog****.

Well she only had one carpet accident at home - and it looks like it was maybe the first round - not as runny and thankfully it didn't soak into the carpet at all...

She saved the really messy accident for the bathroom...clever girl. That one was gross but easy to clean up...poor thing.

I took her food away and am changing her feed tonight...I think a big part of it is the dog food...I wish I could have stayed home with her today - but she seemed to be fine by the I left for work.

That's because the milk will go bad if you lose power. Hope you never do. :xoxo:

I'll post some more pics in the morning. I had to have someone come pick me up in a 4 wheel drive this morning to go to closing and drive me over to FedEx to pick up a some checks that were overnighted to me and then to the bank. FedEx wouldn't come to any residences today and didn't open today. The slogan on their envelope says "The World On Time" and I thought "Not if it snows."

It's postcard pretty outside. The temperature is 25 degrees today so there will be no melting today. It should make it a little easier to drive though. And I am getting out of here today in my own car. I've got cabin fever.

I wish we had some snow, but it's 52 degrees here today and is supposed to stay that way all week. :distress:

Be careful driving. The pics are great. I'd love to spend the weekend in it.
Now I am inspired. I think I'll drive up into the woods and see some snow.

The sun is actually peaking out right now...but yeah, it's in the 20s. This stuff is going to be around for a loooong time. Right now it's pretty and it's too deep even for the apartment kids to play around in - so it's nice and peaceful around here. I love it.

I'm staying home all weekend - have a fire in the fireplace..it's lovely.

I moved around a lot. I went and did all of my errands and just got back from my Bikram yoga class. A lot of people are out and about. If you're careful with the driving, you'll be okay.

I will be careful driving. I got to the corner of the major street by my house, stopped to get gas and realized my tire was losing air. Fortunately, there is a tire place right across the street. Half the neighborhood was there getting some type of tire repair. I saw a couple of guys tooling around on a snowmobile while I was out.
