alright. So I've been at my job for 9 1/2 years. I started right out of high school and have loved it ever since. Granted, there have been some ups and downs. It took me a couple of years to build up the confidence that I could actually do this and to be able to put up with my boss. SO. I have been his right hand "woman" for all this time. He raves about me. Tells me I'm the best assistant he's ever known. I have made several temporary crowns for people, then they would have to go see a specialist for whatever reason. These dentists are calling telling him it was the best temporary they have ever seen, etc. blah blah. One guy even had to double check the chart and ask the patient because he couldn't tell the difference from mine and the real tooth. I'm basically the office manager (although I have never been given that title NOR the $$$$ it's just something I do ). I'm the person that has to go around behind everyone and "clean up" where they F*CK up. I've been there the longest, so everyone comes to ME, not him if they ever have a question about....anything. They don't go to him because he either a. makes them feel like a complete idiot, or b. he confuses them so much because he is wishy washy, they are more confused than when they went in there. and then my favorite. When it's 5:30 and everyone else is walking out the door and we still have a patient..who do you think stays?? well, they can't come to the back and help, so it's me. And I've always been fine doing it (even though I bitched about having to stay until 7:00 pm tuesday) I never get an hour lunch because it's "the nature of my job" and always the last to leave... I'm saying all of this because of the following. I just found out another employee (who I have to basically train-even though she does financial arrangements, and I'm clinical) is making...oh...8 dollars more than me.  and she doesnt' do jack ****.
SO. yeah. that's my problem. So now for the solution. I can either quit and not give a reason. hey, he screwed me over so screw him.
OR-quit and tell him why.
OR. basically tell him if she is worth more to him than me, then when it comes 5:00, I'm walking out the door and her ass can get up and come to the back and help him finish. After all...she IS more valuable.
There are a LOT of things that he has done over the years but this one takes the cake. So.....thanks for letting me vent. I'm just....slightly pissed....

Wait 24 hours to calm down and then ask him for a raise. If he says no, then quietly start looking for another job as you likely will need him for a reference and it usually is much easier to get a job when you have a job.

Geez..I wish you'd stop whining, Michelle. :p
Just kidding - that actually really does suck and it's completely unfair.
Now the two options you gave - could there be a third in which you talk to your boss about this? Or do you not have that kind of relationship? I don't think it's ever easy to talk to superiors about money, but sometimes you just gotta do it.
Do you get annual raises and stuff - and are they fair? Why is this chick making more than you..is it an education thing? A training thing?
I would be pissed too...I mean you've been there for 9.5 years AND had to train this girl? That's crap....and your boss should know that...
So I'd say if you stick to your scenarious I'd go the quit and tell him why route...

I have plenty of references. My uncle is a dentist and has seen me work. Also I have several hygienists. The (only) problem is...I will have to go to evansville (30 minutes away) to get a job. NO dentist in my town will hire me because they know how long I've been there. and any dentist that would do that to him, I dont' want to work for anyway. So I have to go away for a few years, then come back. We just talked yesterday and we talked a little about money. I'm happy with what I make. I make decent money compared to most other assistants (but they aren't as good as me.. j/k) and it's not even really about the money, although it sounds like it. It's that he places so much responsibility on me, and depends on me to scratch his ass. I can't take a day off without them calling me.."where is this..how do I do this" but when push comes to shove...I see where the value is placed.
thank you for your advice, and I will give it some time.

one other thing. in our office we aren't supposed to talk about how much we make (now I f*cking know why...he's screwing us!!! ) So I can't just go to him and be like.."she makes more than me"....) I found out through not so honorable sources....so...

I know.....I thought about when we discuss money again, and he always asks me if I think what I make is fair..i can just say.."I do. But if I find out anyone (other than the hygienist..that's a given) makes more than me...I won't stay" I think that's fair.
ESPECIALLY 8 damn dollars.....and I make decent jack.

You've proved what I always thought - the better you are at your job, the more people take advantage of you and the more they expect you to actually do...
And my other theory - the less people do, the more they get paid.
Anyway, this is your rant, not mine :p
I would bite your lip and ask nicely for a raise - a decent one, and have ready a long list of points to bring up if your request is rejected. That should hopefully initiate a cordial discussion about what you're worth - and if you don't get proper recognition then maybe start looking for work elsewhere. As long as there's no animosity you'll still get a good reference from them or else they can stuff up your jobsearch.
Anyway, I've seen your picture and I reckon you're worth a big pay raise :o (That's my "typical male" superficial comment for the week)

exactly. and please-rant away. and I know if I went to him and said.."I want to make xxx amount an hour" he would give it to me. But I don't see him paying me this. It's an ungodly amount even for what "I'M" doing..I don't even think I could keep a straight face asking for that much.

I dunno. I doubt it. I think it's more the principle than anything. He's so shady.
My friend quit over bad circumstances. He told her he would have a job for her as a hygienist when she graduated which would have been in a month....(she worked as an assistant for 2 years in our office, so it's not like she just fell out of the dumpster) and then 2 days later he hired someone. wtf?? and told her he never said that. ...

Yep if you're good and loyal you will get screwed. People who move from job to job are the ones who make money.
This is bull****. But you can't tell your boss you know and you can't threaten him that you would leave under such circumstances because it isn't professional. I would go with Strand's advice. Also, don't wear yourself out so much, ask someone else to stay, etc. Obviously he doesn't appreciate all that you do.

I have to agree with this.
I've been right where you are before...almost exactly, albeit in another field.
I'd go and express your concerns in a professional manner, ask for the raise. if he says no, then start looking. but, you have to really weigh the pros and cons regarding your seniority where you are. believe me, I wish I hadn't left my last job over $5,000 a year. I was at the tip top of the totem pole. yeah, I worked my ass off and stayed late, blah blah, but I basically ran my dept. I had baby attorneys as assistants and THAT doesn't happen usually, etc. and I'd give back the $5,000 raise to be back there. now, here I sit at the low end of the pole, with no seniority.
just something to think about.

I know. I've thought about this too. But really, it would be a nice break. I've been at the top for so long, it would be nice to have someone to be able to go to when I don't know what to do..(NOT that that ever happens!!! ) But I imagine the dental world is a little different because we don't get "promotions" etc. There is really no where for me to move, except up front scheduling or something. And usually there are only two assistants at any given place. I figure if I can go to another office I can take that b*tch out in a matter of months:lol:  But believe, me. I've thought about it, and I appreciate your advice. That's one of the main things holding me back. and the fact that he is helping my mother with her (extensive) dental needs.
BUT...for my update.
I walked in this morning and at 7:45 he asked me to go in the consultation room to "talk". I walked in there, and he was on the phone with his wife having and argument."honey..do you REALLY have to talk to me like that?? can you just PICK up my glasses??!!" I was thinking..."ho-ly ****" but he pulled me in there and gave me a dollar raise!!! So I didn't have to go raise hell. I AM excited, but money is not what drives me. Anyone that has had a conversation with me longer than 5 minutes knows I'm very passionate about what I do, so we'll just see. This will hold me over for a little bit ;)

Other than that it went perfectly
yeah. we usually have a barf bucket close by, just in case!
and at least you had an excuse!!! I hallucinate seriously when I'm sleeping. I'll wake up and see **** on the wall. One time I saw a spider and started yelling (it was a big ass spider!!! ) and I"m not even scared of them.
glad the rest went o.k. !! :]

The last time I had laughing gas I saw the trees outside the dental office falling on me lol...then another time I saw myself on a rollercoaster...and she it rounded a sharp curve I also moved and nearly fell out of the chair
I guess I don't take the stuff well... either way it's never affected my whole day...I hope I'm not coming down with something - but I think it's just the damn gas.
