Great News: I'm in my first year as a graduate student and begining in January I will be working as an intern. We had our interviews last month and I just found out yesterday that I got an awesome placement. I'll be interning at a major hospital and I am really excited about it. With this first placement, you have no choice where you end up. I could have landed a job at a local DSS or in Child Protective Services somewhere. I couldn't have chosen a better placement if I HAD a choice. I may end up doing my full time placement there if things work out well. So, I'm very excited!

Kind of Bad News: I never get sick, right? I went to bed last night with a semi-sore throat and woke up this morning feeling like total hell. I called in sick to work which I never do) AND I didn't go to class today (which I have not done this whole semester) I don't have a fever but I'm dizzy and nauseous and have a really bad headache. One of my friends is coming to pick me up and we're going to the university clinic (she's sick, too). Poor me. :distress:

And sorry about being sick :( Guess it's the season for it - I hope you get to feeling better soon and I hope it's not something horrid like The Flu or Strepthroat...*shudder*

Congrats on the internship! I was getting sick last week and started taking Airborne which seems to have taken care of it. You could try that. :) Feel better. :xoxo:

I just spent two hours in the infirmary to find out I'm not really that sick? I didn't even get to see a doctor- just a nurse. She told me to take ibuprofen, immodium, pepto-bismol (sp?) and ginger ale.

*not happy*

Just a nurse?!#@$@

In all honesty, most of the orders come from the nurse....They just can't put them in writing.

I thought of you after I wrote that. :o

Actually I never have a problem seeing a nurse, they just can't write prescriptions. Really, the only thing I wanted was phenergan for the nausea but oh well. She said I wasn't sick "long enough" (it only started this morning) to see a doctor. I have a family practitioner that I usually see, so I will go to her if I don't get better.

Congratulations on the good news!
Now make them give you some Phenergan. That is the best stuff for nausea but it makes me go to sleep.

Wow! That is great! :woohoo: What a blessing, you totally lucked out.
And the sickness will pass. :xoxo:
I got a sore throat yesterday, too. Not sick, though. Chest congestion. I think I just did too many things that give people sore throats and chest congestion over my lazy, lazy, lazy Thanksgiving holiday. I also never get sick. Weird. :p

I hope you rebound quickly so you can have endless happy time thinking about your internship!

Take care of yourself!!

Congrats on the hospital internship! I graduated with my masters this past spring and will be wrapping up my internship next week. I got the gig I really wanted too... interning in a psych hospital.
The experience has been amazing!
Word of "heads up".... overall I have been AMAZED at how many of the staff would better qualify as patients!
I LOVED working with the actual patients... some of the quirky staff, not so much. We're talking diagnosable personality disorders here!

But you should do great if just the excitement in your note is any indication. Never forget why you're there and for whom! :wavey:

Thank you- I am so excited. This isn't a psych hospital, but does have a psych ward. It's a huge teaching/trauma facility- I am so happy about it. And congratulations to you for finishing up!

Shut UP! You know what I meant. I'd rather have a nurse take care of me frankly- it's the whole can't-write-a-prescription thing that sucks.

That's what I would have told you too, to be honest. :D Glad you're feeling better now.

My Great news just became Bad news yesterday.

This e-mail to my advisor kind of explains it:

Hi Professor D,

I am e-mailing you because I'm not sure what to do. My field placement was supposed to have been with the Social Work Department at B Hospital in Adult Short Stay. I called my contact there about a week and a half ago to set up my interview, but she said she was in a meeting and she would call me back. I called her this morning to try again because I hadn't heard from her and she told me that she doesn't need anymore students! She said the only opening she had was on Pediatric ICU and that she didn't think that was an appropriate field placement for someone who has had no social work experience. I explained that I thought I was going to be in Adult Short Stay and she said they had given that placement to another student (C). I have left messages with Professor M and Professor K, but haven't heard back. I am really disappointed, upset, and now concerned that I don't have a field placement! I don't understand why someone didn't call me and let me know (the contact at B Hospital said she has been going back and forth with Professor M about it). Can you give me any advice on how to handle this? Thanks for reading and for any encouragement you can offer.

Sincerely
Janet C

I'm actually okay with it today- I spoke with a couple of my professors yesterday and even though I still don't know where I'll end up, everything will be fine. Just very frustrating.

I don't get how they can almost guarantee you a spot and then mysteriously have no room when the time comes to place you?

They're now talking about putting me in the pediatric ICU spot. They want me to interview for it and because I'm a "non-traditional" (old) student, they think I can handle it. I'll be signing up for the free counseling services my program offers if I get this placement.

The person who got the spot may have a connection. Sounds fishy. People suck. Jannie, I hope you get that placement. We're all rooting for you!
