View Full Version : Stevie Nicks or Janis Joplin?

I have read in some articles about Stevie she was mentioned as the "new Janis Joplin" in some moment. But.. who was greater artist, Stevie or Janis? I think Janis is qualified as a LEGEND cause she was "lucky" to die young, of drugs overdose (something stupid imho but all of them, Morrison, Hendrix, etc who died young are legends in part because of that, I even read sometime that they don't forgive Bob Dylan of being still alive , so stupid)

And Stevie's carrier is logically longer than Janis'. Ok, it's not a matter of time, it is talent, the voice, etc,.. I know that.
So.. answering not as a fan but being as objective as you can.. who was better.. Stevie or Janis?? I think Stevie Nicks is greater, anyway.

Well, better in terms of...?? I don't necessarily think one was better than the other, but in the long run, I'd pick Stevie over Janis. I know more about Stevie. I followed Janis for awhile, but while the girl had soul and a better voice than some gave her credit for, there was no real connection for me there.

I don't have a huge personal connection to Stevie, either, but they both strike different chords in me.

As much as I love me some Stevie... I would give Janis the slight edge.
She just has so much natural soul to her and gives real life to a song.
Stevie can be fabulous too but can be too much a product of "the industry" at times. Love her tho... don't get me wrong!! :wavey:

Janis Joplin. Without a smidge of my doubt. :D
She was direct and open and bared her soul naked in plain terms. I like that kind of guts in an artist.
Stevie gets too tangled up in all her "Well, - (insert vague gypsy and moon goddess and "He said" half-phrases and non sequiturs).

I personally can identify much more with Janis's lyrics and personal delivery than I can Stevie Nicks'. So Janis gets my vote if you want to pose the comparison.

Well, that's definitely what I like about Janis, was her absolute raw energy. There was no BS there. Kozmic Blues? Please. Love it.

My favourite Janis quote: "You're supposed to be doin' an article on me, man, f*ck reality!" :D

You forgot the references to her alter egos, Lily, Alice, and whoever the hell else there was!

It's hard to compare Janis and Stevie, because they're two completely different personalities. Janis was bawdy, raucous and frank. Stevie is feminine, romantic and courtly.
The one thing they do have in common, is that they both bared their souls on stage.

You can't compare these two or pick between them. Janis has a few years of work, while Stevie has decades. We don't know how Janis would have turned out. She could have done a disco album for goodness sakes. Mid-70s Stevie reminds people of what Janis was....and will continue to be because that's all we know of her....Stevie is much much more....She's been a rocker....a pop singer...ac.....but like JStew said, they both knew how to bare their souls.

ITA...and I don't think Janis had the ability to be as personal as Stevie does. she can't tap into that side of me. I think Stevie has much better songwriting capabilities.

I don't think Janis had the ability to be as personal as Stevie does. You bring up an interesting point: Was Janis' outrageousness a mask for her inner vulnerability -- a guise to cover a part of herself that she was afraid to show to the world and to her audience?

Stevie has never been afraid to show her vulnerable side, and, conversely, that's why I tend to view her as a stronger person. Obviously, she's tough as nails -- she's battled drug dependencies, crippling insecurities and chronic illness, and has come out the other side -- but she allows us to see that, at the end of the day, she's still just a fragile human being like the rest of us.

what's the point?

that's like saying which is the more worthy piece of fruit on my kitchen counter: the really great organic apple from the farmer's market, or the incredible banana from Chile that I picked up from Whole Foods.

Yes, the apple is locally grown and I know the farmers who grew it, but the banana that made it's way all the way to LA from Chile, tastes pretty darn good on my cereal.

why does your signature thing say that? IT's kind of patronizing.

Anyway I prefer Janis.

Stevie and maybe only because her rise coincided with my puberty.Janis was before my time and Stevie was right there ..Also I think as a songwriter Stevie takes it..or she did during her peak ...I guess she doesn't really write anymore.

what's the point? What's the point of most discussions we have on The Ledge?
If we didn't discuss pointless things, there wouldn't be anything left to talk about.

I got the quote from Stevie, she used it after her father died. I like it. It stops me from lighting up ....... Which has to be good

There is NO point!
It's just a mindless question thrown out to a bunch of fellow Mac fans to make internet message board conversation!
It's like when I got the business for a poll I posted recently.... sure, it wasn't rocket science but who cares?!
Sure, there may have been no comparison on the surface but can't we just throw out questions to each other for conversation-sake?

No need to over-think this stuff..... it means NOTHING!!
(whew.... had to vent that....

Yeah! it's true!! I just wanted to talk about it, cause Mick said in his book Stevie looked like Janis in her firsts mac tours.. so I wanted to ask you about these two great singers. No more...

It's like the fave mac member in the Rumours forum. They selected the Rumours lineup but that doesn't mean they are denying the other lineups..

Stevie and Janis are two of my favorite artists! I couldn't possibly pick between them, because I see them as totally different. Janis is FULL of soul and has that wonderful gravely voice. She was extremely influenced my blues singers like Big Momma Thornton. Janis is blues in my opinion.

Stevie, on the other hand, is FULL of mystery and other-worldness and has a wonderful, smoother, silkier voice. Stevie has said that she was mesmerized by Janis's stage performances, which in turn influenced her. Stevie was also more influenced by rock and pop artists than Janis. Stevie is rock and roll with some pop mixed in.

They both are amazing performers. They both are known for their fashion. They both have had their fair share of the rock and roll lifestyle---drugs, etc. In these ways, they are about equal.

I still say it is like comparing apples to oranges though! Both important and influencial in their own way.
