ORLANDO, Fla. -- Relatives of a missing boy's mother who killed herself after aggressive questioning by CNN's Nancy Grace sued the network and the talk-show host Tuesday, claiming Grace caused emotional distress that led to the suicide.

Melinda Duckett committed suicide Sept. 8, a day after Grace's show on CNN Headline News aired a segment in which Grace grilled Duckett about her whereabouts Aug. 27 -- the day 2-year-old Trenton Duckett was reported missing.

Authorities, who said last week they believe the boy is alive, have named Melinda Duckett as the prime suspect in his disappearance.

Jay Paul Deratany, the attorney representing Duckett's estate, said Tuesday that Grace encouraged Duckett to appear on her show by saying the goal was to draw public attention to help find Trenton.

"It's not just about the questioning, it's about the misrepresentation with the knowledge that she was emotionally distraught," Deratany said. The attorney said Grace improperly took on the role of a law enforcement officer.

CNN Headline News declined to comment specifically on the lawsuit, which seeks unspecified damages.

"We stand by Nancy Grace and fully support her, as we have from the beginning of this matter," a spokeswoman said in a news release Tuesday.

this is such b*s, i have followed this case forever, the mother who commited suicide from what i have seen/read is now the only suspect in her son's dissappearance/possible death & now that she off'd herself no one will ever be able to put he little son trenton to rest~ do i think nancy grace was some what aggressive during her show w/ this chick?, yes i do, but even my gut feeling was that this girl was so out of line & guilty that i don't think it crossed any lines~

I heard recently where they now know that the kid is still alive and living with relatives (?). So there was something shadey going on... as if that wasn't apparent before. ;)

Sure Nancy Grace's technique may have been improper, HOWEVER, she is not a counselor of any sorts and in this era of "instant celebrity", people go on any kind of tv for exposure.
One can not blame someone for how another responds to anything.
NG didn't help the situation... but she sure can't be blamed for another's actions either.

I don't care for NG.
I do not think anyone is "responsible" for the actions of others..BUT..she needs to be held accountable for her actions...this may serve as a good life lesson.

For some reason, I'm not too worried about Nancy Grace  The girl can hold her own.

I don't think it's ok to treat her with that aggression just cause she or the public had a gut feeling she might have been guilty

This infuriates me. It's such a waste of time lawsuit.

Does this mean now that when a dude kills himself after his girlfriend breaks up with him...that SHE'S responsible? This would set a horrible precedent IMO.

AND I'm sorry but Nancy Grace was NOT responsible for this woman's suicide. Like PsychCat said, "One can not blame someone for how another responds to anything."

Her "interview" techniques are horrid - but ultimately she is NOT responsible for this woman's death.

agreed!

it's tragic that the woman died, but are we going to track down every person who could have had a hand in her demise? the kids who made fun of her on the playground? her parents? an ex? come on. what a waste of time and money.

Hmm...I wonder if I can sue my sister for saying I couldn't sing at the age of 8. I can sue for my lost wages as the singer I WOULD have become had she not pushed me down!!!

Meh..anyway - I hate Nancy Grace..but what does she need to be held accountable for? Her ****ty "interview" techniques? The fact that she interviewed a sick woman? I don't think she has anything to be accountable for except being bad at journalism.

yes. we'll suck your sister dry!!

lol ... i could more easily get behind a lawsuit against NG for being a ****ty journalist than for being responsible for that woman's suicide.

hmm ... that gives me an idea ...

 Seriously - it'd be pretty funny if good reputable journalists all got together a class action lawsuit against Nancy Grace for bad journalism..or course then they'd have go after Geraldo, O'Reilly, etc...the list is endless....

But Nancy didn't do anything wrong. It is freedom of speech. Nancy is allowed to ask whatever quaestions she wants. She in no way is responsible for someone else killing themselves. It is just the stupidest thing I have ever heard.

I don't see how you think Nancy needs to "learn a life lesson" just because she implied that this women may not be as innocent as she seemed. She was just trying to do some detective work.

BNancy is allowed to ask whatever quaestions she wants. not necesarily I think thats the problem

Jay Paul Deratany, the attorney representing Duckett's estate, said Tuesday that Grace encouraged Duckett to appear on her show by saying the goal was to draw public attention to help find Trenton.the woman signed a contract after being approached with a certain conditions and was made false promises. she was set up really. it all depends on what was signed by law but what the network did was intentionally mislead in order to get her to appear and they won't learn a lesson from it cause they do it all the time but it was definately wrong. the woman was clearly fragile and was under the impression that the interview would not affect her state in this way and made the decision to appear taking her state into account. then it turned out to be what it was, something which would affect her state, and they should be accountable.

I hope CNN and Nancy Grace pay thru the nose for this. That wasnt journalism, that was harrassment. Regardless of the appearance that the mother was the only viable suspect, Nancy Grace is not a judge/jury and had no right to act like an inquisitor. JMO.
