Which musical groups/artists does (Or did) your parents & siblings enjoy listening to as you grew up? Did some of their picks rub off on you in a positive manner or did they rub off in a negative way?
My Dad:

Elvis Presley
Roy Clark
Buck Owens
Merle Haggard
George Jones
Conway Twitty
Loretta Lynn

The Doobie Bros.
Linda Rondstadt
Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band
Dire Straits
Prince

The Rolling Stones
The Beatles
Deep Purple

Guns N Roses (My older brother Geary had the original vinyl LP of GNR's "Live Like a Suicide" before "Appetite for Destruction" was released-Those 4 songs on "Suicide" were the first songs I heard of GNR)
Yes, I 'positively' absorbed a lil' of everything I listened too growing up. I still basically listen to all the above now minus George Jones & Merle Haggard (If you were from Muskogee, OK you would also HATE Merle Haggard because of his signature song "Okie from Muskogee".)....And Yes, I occasionally play CD's from my Mom's huge Disco collection (Including the Village People & KC & the Sunshine Band)

Brian, it sort of surprises me your mom was so into disco cuz she was such a tough b*tch! My dad played the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack at every party we had.
Dad's Faves:
The Beatles (Esp John Lennon)
Eagles (Every time he put this on my little bro fell asleep)
Stones
Bee Gees
FM
Mom's:
Whatever's on the radio. I did not get my musical ear from her! Although she can carry a tune sometimes.
Bro:
Guns N' Roses (Axl is to him as Stevie is to me)
I don't know who else! Hard rock stuff. Haha.

country, country and more country. if it's on CMT, they love it. the more redneck, the better.
more supporting documentation that I was adopted.

You too? Seriously, if you met my parents you'd be like, "Um, no." Except there is a resemblance and I have the same laugh as my Mom. They're good people, I've just always been different.

Wow! Some Ledgies are YOUNG!!!! I can relate to alot of their parents music. lol
My dad:
Elvis
40's big band music
Tex Mex music
Bing, Frank, Dean, Andy Williams, Herb Alpert, ect
My Mom
Same as above but she would listen and sing to songs she liked on the radio too.
My brothers:
Beatles, Van Halen, Aerosmith, Queen, Alice Cooper, KISS, ect
Me: Opposite of what my brothers listened to. I do like some songs from above but I was mainly a Bee Gees, Fleetwood Mac, Linda Ronstradt, Andy Gibb, Stevie Nicks, Heart type of music lover. Anything current on radio too. NO country. Maybe a couple of Dolly Parton songs but that was about it.

My folks are all about country. Dad really don't care much, mom is a big Kenny Rogers, Dolly, Hank Williams Sr. type. I definatley didn't get my tastes from them.

My mom is very much a 70s music fan. She is the reason I am into Fleetwood Mac.
Her favorites:
Allman Brothers (she LOVES them)
The Eagles
Three Dog Night
The Doobie Brothers
BTO
Aerosmith
Dad: Elvis, Cream, Black Sabbath, CCR from his younger years. He also listened to a lot of older country, like Hank Williams, Jr., Ronnie Milsap, Barbara Mandrell, early George Strait and Reba, etc.

my mum's favourite band is u2. it's cool that they still make good music so we both have the same favourite even though we're a genertion apart.
dad was different to most other peoples parents cause he liked heaps of modern stuff like nirvana but he was also a fan of stevie's.

My parents were both very much into The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, Fleetwood Mac, Cat Stevens, and Carole King. My mom really got into The BeeGees and that whole Saturday Night Fever business. And she loved Babs, of course. My older sister was into Led Zeppelin, Marshall Tucker, and I remember she went to a Steve Miller concert once. Lol. My younger brother was a major metal head. And not the kind of commercial metal that one hears on the radio. He was into some serious thrashing!
The music my parents listened to stayed with me throughout my adulthood. I love all that stuff and much of it is still so relevant.

Brian, it sort of surprises me your mom was so into disco cuz she was such a tough b*tch! My dad played the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack at every party we had.
loved all types of music, which apparently is where I inherited my 'fanatical' musical fascination from (Remember, I am named after the leader of the Beach Boys, the one and only Mr.Brian Wilson!)
At my Mom's funeral last March, I was asked by the preciding Pastor if my Mom had any music picked out to be played before/during the funeral...Well, Knowing my Mom's 'warped' sense of humor I was tempted to play her favorite songs by the band WAR (I can't think of the title of the song, but I remember one of the verses which was my Mom's theme song) but I sure only my older brother Geary & myself would get the joke:
"I'll whoop yer Momma's ass
I'll whoop yer Daddy's ass
I'll whoop yer sista's ass
I might even whoop my own ass
Ass kicker...
Booty whooper"
As for a tough bitch, My Mom had a co-worker who was a gay biker chick, who was even in awe that Mom came to her defense when other co-workers tried to start that ol' homophobic BS on her, cause dear ol Mom threatenedto kick anybodies ass who f**ked with her friend, And Mom wouldnt care if yer male/female and black-or-white...As my Mom was fond of saying: "You don't cross the Boss...And I'm the boss!" (If you were dumb and didnt heed her word she would rain down upon yer ass-I know that from experience  )

I'm proud to say I discovered FM on my own. My dad liked them, but shockingly enough, we never owned any of their records, or any of Stevie's solo stuff. I thought that was so weird. How does one avoid FM?! My dad had an 8-track of BN, supposedly, and some Chicken Shack stuff, but it's either lost or back in Scotland.
My dad liked Gordon Lightfoot, the Beach Boys, Cream, The Beatles, Moody Blues, FM, etc. Pretty much everything, and our tastes are a lot alike. GL is the first artist I remember hearing as a kid. Eveerrrry trip we took, my dad would put a tape in, and for the entire drive, nothin' but Gord. And Alma Cogan; he really liked her.
Mom is/was all about The Everly Bros, Connie Francis, Brenda Lee, Dean Martin, Sinatra - what do you expect from an Italian? ;) She liked FM, but always got confused when she saw Stevie with FM... then solo... then eventually Tom Petty... then FM.... She was always like, what band is this woman in?!
I think I get a bit from each of them, but I was definitely influenced by my brother. He was all about Motorhead, Black Sabbath, Ozzy, Blondie, Deep Purple, Rainbow, Dio, Lee Aaron. When the 90's rolled around, he was really into Alanis, Tori Amos, Garbage, all of those chicks. Alanis was my goddess for awhile.
I pretty much like a little bit of everything. There are some artists that I like that my family had nothing to do with ie, Cyndi Lauper, Patti Smith, Bonnie Raitt, Kate Bush, Marianne Faithfull, Jefferson Airplane, etc.

I don't think the pastor would've gotten that song either.

That's awesome. But it's not awesome that you experienced the wrath. Except that it taught you a few good things.

I still wonder to this day what the hell my mom did throughout the 70s. She has pretty much no knowledge of any of the popular music of the era. She STILL doesn't quite know who Stevie Nicks is...I'll be happy if I can get her to stop pronouncing it "steh-vee" Grrr....and no, she has no accent of any kind
She liked the Beatles - but the early stuff, other than that Elvis, Paul and Paula, Paul Anka...some country...she had some Johnny Cash albums (which I stole) but I think they were my ex-dads.
I got a lot of my music taste from my sister and from tv
Sister:
The Beatles, esp. Paul McCartney, Wham!, Fleetwood Mac, Monkees...some 80s stuff....
I'm right there with her on the Beatles and FM - and we do like a ton of the same artists - but I've discovered much more on my own: Sheryl Crow, The COunting Crows, The Decemberists....lots and lots...

As a youngin' growing up.... I remember the one album that stood out in my parents record collection was McCartney's first solo album.
Can't recall specifics but in general:
Dad: Allman Bros., blues
Mom: Chicago, Neil Diamond, Bette Midler
Older Bro: KISS, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Ted Nugent, Aerosmith, Queen, The Who, basically everything that is now "classic rock"
Younger Bro: Kinks, ELO, KISS, McCartney & Wings
I embraced Fleetwood Mac on my own.... got the rest of my family interested. They are about the one band that has stayed constant for me.
I also love the McCartney & Wings era of his work + the Beatles.

My sympathies. Lady Sovereign is such a joke. I saw her video for whatever song she's got out now, and I was like... This... is music?

My brother listened to Pink Floyd, Steppenwolf, all the surfer and hot rod bands (my brother was born in '50, my mom in '32)
my step-dad listened to the country stuff, and the cajun stuff.......I hated it then. I only barely tolerate it now....
I grew up in the 60's and 70's so I got the best of all musical worlds!

Neither one of my parents was a big music fan when I was growing up, but my dad kind of got into it later. I remember some old albums laying around the house that I think were my mom's:
Donna Fargo
The Oak Ridge Boys
Rusty Wier
David Allan Coe
Willie Nelson
I think you get the picture.
My mom's mom had a **** load of albums and 8-track tapes, but I somehow doubt she ever listened to one of them:
Wanda Jackson
Kitty Wells
Elvis Presley
Willie Nelson
Basically, stuff she heard in the honky tonks she worked in on the Bossier Strip in the 1960s.
My dad likes "surf" music from the '60s (Beach Boys, Dick Dale & the Deltones, etc); also, Linda Ronstadt, Brenda Lee, Roy Orbison, and various girl groups.

My dad has never been a big music fan, so there was nothing to mention there.
As for my mom, it was pretty much all GNR, Led Zep, Aerosmith, and hair bands like Poison when I was little. As I got older she switched to R.E.M., Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and P.J. Harvey. Then for awhile she listened to nothing but classical. Lately she's been on a Bruce Springsteen kick. Go figure.
My older brother (3 years my senior) listened to a lot of Metallica, Def Leopard, and classic rock bands like Led Zep, Skynyrd, and the Doors. These days he listens to a lot of rap, country, and alternative (do they even still call it that? I'm so out of touch.).
