Racing ahead to next year
November 13, 2006 12:00am
WITH the Cup Carnival wrapped up for another year, tour promoter and A-list marquee host Andrew McManus is already eagerly awaiting next year's festivities.
And for good reason too -- McManus has quietly bought into a young horse with music legend Stevie Nicks, Gai Waterhouse and gaming magnate Bruce Mathieson.
The group hopes the horse, Ilumne, will be ready to run in a three-year-old race on Derby Day next year, which Nicks is planning to travel over from the US to see.
The partnership came about after the Fleetwood Mac singer visited Flemington last year as McManus's guest. The singer was one of the stars of the Birdcage.
Nicks apparently fell in love with racing and wanted to be a part of it. "Stevie picked it. But it had to be a good one, because Stevie can't be associated with a loser," McManus said.
Ilumne is currently being trained and will most likely run its first race this month.

I think the Birdcage is the name of a party, they're not referring to the movie.

I'm so sorry Stevie. I'm totally losing you. But then again, you don't want to be associated with a loser anyway. Thank god, me neither.

I think any performer who has the ability to think past their own nose, and do something good for the world, is a winner.

do you know what a racehorse cost? aahh I'll stop this. I guess I just don't understand americans that profile themselves with charity on one side and throw away BIG money on the other side and walk away with it on both sides without any public criticism.
I guess I desperately want her to be in the news with her music and qualities and not as a sidekick to henley, petty, a racehorse and poor people who are miserable because their own government, chosen by their own people, f*ck up the whole world.
But still she's a sweet girl I guess.
....and the name of the horse just makes me sarcastic too. Especially because it's spelled wrong if it should have been the songtitle. In Stevie's case, I'm not sure if it's a typo.

do you know what a racehorse cost? They're expensive, yes. Which I'd imagine is why Stevie isn't the sole owner, but is, instead, co-owner with three other people.
I guess I just don't understand americans that profile themselves with charity on one side and throw away BIG money on the other side and walk away with it on both sides without any public criticism.Gerald, don't we all spend money on things that others might consider to be frivolous? CDs, concert tickets, trips to another country to see some rock & roll band? We all blow big bucks on fairly self-centered interests.
Stevie's a grown woman -- she should be allowed to spend her money on whatever she pleases. To her credit though, she balances that out with charitable acts, donating both her time and her money -- which she's done for the past 25+ years.
I don't see why her charitable acts should be viewed as any less significant or respectable simply because she doesn't live like a monk.
I guess I desperately want her to be in the news with her music and qualities and not as a sidekick to henley, petty, a racehorse and poor people who are miserable because their own government, chosen by their own people, f*ck up the whole world.Maybe Stevie's just not interested in being the center of attention at this moment. She doesn't have anything to prove these days, to herself or anyone else, and she seems happier than she has in quite a while. So she's keeping a lower profile while still keeping her name in the news.
I wish she were recording a great new album, but she's not and such is life.
....and the name of the horse just makes me sarcastic too. Especially because it's spelled wrong if it should have been the songtitle. In Stevie's case, I'm not sure if it's a typo.I have a feeling it's a typo. Time will tell.
