I usually try to quote my referring source for this stuff, but I became so enraged after reading this I pounded my keyboard and lost the window.

You can see some of the undercover video here: http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=2626032&page=1

Army Recruiters Accused of Misleading Students to Get Them to Enlist

Nov. 3, 2006 — An ABC News undercover investigation showed Army recruiters telling students that the war in Iraq was over, in an effort to get them to enlist.

ABC News and New York affiliate WABC equipped students with hidden video cameras before they visited 10 Army recruitment offices in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

"Nobody is going over to Iraq anymore?" one student asks a recruiter.

"No, we're bringing people back," he replies.

"We're not at war. War ended a long time ago," another recruiter says.

Last year, the Army suspended recruiting nationwide to retrain recruiters following hundreds of allegations of improprieties.

One Colorado student taped a recruiting session posing as a drug-addicted dropout.

"You mean I'm not going to get in trouble?" the student asked.

The recruiters told him no, and helped him cheat to sign up.

During the ABC News sessions, some recruiters told our students if they enlisted, there would be little chance they'd to go Iraq.

But Col. Robert Manning, who is in charge of U.S. Army recruiting for the entire Northeast, said that new recruits were likely to go to Iraq.

"I would not disagree with that," Manning said. "We are a nation and Army at war still."

Manning looked at the ABC News video of his recruiters.

"It's hard to believe some of things they are telling prospective applicants," Manning said. "I still believe that this is the exception more than the norm. … I've visited many stations myself, and I know that we have many wonderful Americans serving in uniform as recruiters."

Yet ABC News found one recruiter who even claimed if you didn't like the Army, you could just quit.

"It's called a 'Failure to Adapt' discharge," the recruiter said. "It's an entry-level discharge so it won't affect anything on your record. It'll just be like it never happened."

Manning, however, disagrees with the ease the recruiter describes.

"I would believe it's not as easy as he would lead you to believe it is," he said.

Sue Niederer, whose son, Seth, joined the Army in 2002, said she was all too familiar with recruiters' lies.

"They need to do anything they possibly can to get recruits," Niederer said.

Seth was sent to Iraq and was killed by a roadside bomb.

Niederer said she was not surprised by what ABC News had found. She believes it's still a widespread problem. She said that recruiters told Seth he wouldn't be put into combat.

"Ninety percent [are] going to be putting their lives on the line for our country," she said. "Tell them the truth. That's all. Just tell them the truth."

That is &^%*^%#$%^( sick alright, but indeed NOT surprising. One would recommend going into a recruitment office and saying : "you don't mind if I tape this, do you, just to make sure I get the truth and in case I need these verbal statements later in court?"

I also have to say though..... make sure your kids are educated and don't get the wool pulled over their eyes by these fanatical career military people!!

The war in Iraq is OVER? come on now kids, you can read everywhere daily that people are agitating that this war needs to stop and how there is no end in sight!

But yeah, the ones about "leaving with no problem if you change your mind" and "you won't be placed in combat" are harder to gauge for truthfulness.
DISGUSTING!!!!

Sasja, Pacifist.

Last time I looked "Vietnam Part 2" was still going strong.

As for the US Army, There's a popular saying that is quite appropriate: "F.T.A." (Isnt hard to figure it out)

Brian "Nuthin' worse than seeing a McDonald's employee being paid more monthly than a Soldier" j.

Lying pieces of ****...:distress:

my older brother was an Army recruiter in the mid 80's, and he now regrets it. He was told to lie to 'possible recruits' to meet his 'monthly quota'.

Ask most new recruits who lives only 40 miles from me in the city of Lawton (Home of Ft.Sill/US Army military base) what they think of the Army, I'm sure you'll hear "F.T.A." mentioned.

 I believe your brother. Sometimes we all gotta do things...make that deal with the dark side.
My father was in WWII. He was drafted at the age of 24. He was a sharpshooter. He saw combat in both France and Germany. It's very hard for me to type this next sentence. I'm pretty sure that he killed people. He NEVER spoke of his war experiences. Just wouldn't talk about it. He was a Virgo (Amber, you out there?). What I mean is, he was a very sweet, easy going, life of the party kind of guy. But many was the night he would sit at our kitchen table, silently smoking Pall Mall unfiltered's and drinking Narragansett beer as if possesed by some demon that none of us could see or know about. And that's what killed him at the age of 55,under the guise of lung cancer and cirrhosis.
So that is part of my hatred of our governement's stupid war machine.
I think it's time for me to go vote.

They say anything to get you in there, it's brutal. :(

Did you guys see the cover of Newsweek 11/6? It basically says Iraq, we're losing and now how to get out. Friggin defeatocrats, right?

Well, the article was pretty brutal to R's and D's - though mostly to W for his head in the sand platform. It was a good article though.

Ds were idiots too, I don't deny that. But he was in charge and at the helm. It was the "losing" word that caught my eye. I haven't seen that in the mainstream media. They probly got a whoopin'!

Carrie and Jazz, I wish nothing but a quck and safe return for your brothers. A really close friend of mine served for awhile, so I can understand what you are going through. Stay strong for them, and remember...the ledge loves you. :xoxo:

It isn't the Army or any other branch of service that is wrong. It is the recuiters who lie to the young men and women out there. Just tell the kids the truth about the Iraq war. The young people and their parents have to be involved in the process if they are thinking of enlisting. Take your time to figure out what job you want to do in the military and believe me, the recuiters will keep in touch with you even if you wait a year or more to make up your mind. Not all recuiters are evil. Alot of them are honest and do tell the truth and face tremendous pressure from higher-ups. It is very hard to NOT be a recuiter. It's a tough job and someone has to do it. Just like those that serve our country. If you want to live in a free country than you have to protect our country:nod:

thanks.

i understand the "price of freedom" and all that bs. what i don't like is the army administration, the way they handle the dissemination of information, and the bull**** they sell the public. i have nothing but respect for the kids who are out there fighting and dying for our "freedom."
