I just picked up "Read Between My Lines" at my local B&N and I have to say the writing is really not that bad. I have read the introduction and am halfway through the first chapter and have actually learned a few things. She basically search every article ever published and lifted from that. There is an interesting comment from Dolly Parton on the back cover too.

very interesting ... odd to me that dolly would say she doesn't have as good a voice as stevie's. stevie's voice is unique, but when it comes to control and range, i'd say dolly has her beat. how funny that dolly would be in awe of anyone!

All the more reason that it is such a compliment. Dolly is such an iconic figure herself.

It would be interesting, and I have been hooting about them doing a project for years. Now, it might be kind of odd, as Dolly sings about an octave higher than Stevie. Her voice has lost nothing these last 30 years. If anything she has gotten more control, nuance, and shades she can muster in one song. These days it would be tough mix. Their voices would have been stunning together in 1975.

you are absolutely right about dolly gaining control/nuance as the years have passed. her live version of smokey mountain memories from a show last year absolutely brings me to tears ... as does her rendition of stairway to heaven. no way she could've pulled that off with porter wagoner. i still think they could make magic today. mark knopfler and emmylou's voices have very different ranges/timbres, but they're still golden.

but god, now that you mention 1975 ... i would kill for a straight-up country collaboration from back then. oy. my southern heart aches!

No one believes me about Stairway. It makes the hair on the back of my arms stand up. And Robert Plant loves it, btw.

We do need to get married.

How about the voice on the original Sorcerer demo with Dolly ?

the first 30 times i heard that version of stairway, i cried. i still do. i can't help it - even if i tell myself "i'm not going to cry" when i press play, i cry. it is breathtaking. i read that about plant - i told my stepdad that (huge zep fan), but he insists that dolly butchered it. twat. i love all of dolly's covers, actually ... shine, imagine, the trio version of after the goldrush ... be still my heart.

yes sparky, let's get married, as long as you don't mind putting me through school (don't worry, it's a state school). :xoxo:

oh god, sparky, what are you trying to do to me? putting those ideas in my head at 1 am? i'll never sleep! here's another idea: what about sorrowful "sleeping angel" voice with dolly?

OMG. I saw Dolly do this with just an acoustic guitar at the HOB a few years ago. I wept like a f*cking baby.

Awesome.

Okay, here's a corker. Dolly and Stevie do Insider? In 1981.

Just think of the lesbian overtones.

I wish i could scan it right now, but you should see the wild Porter Wagoner/Dolly parton record I have: the two of them in thick orange/suntan makeup!

That was my reaction to Stairway as well, and I needed to hear it again, so I even pre-ordered it on Amazon in order to download Stairway to Heaven. I can't remember when, but I think we all talked about this a while back.

Stevie's Sorceror Demo (Coffee Plant, I think) voice, with Dolly would be so amazing!

Beautiful!

It doesn't surprise me that Dolly, with her glorious voice, and enormous song catalogue, would still be so generous with compliments for another artist. She always comes across as charming, humble, and full of humour, especially about her appearance.

Sparky/Carrie - care to give polygamy a try?

her humility and generosity make me love her so much more ... she's the anti-diva with a diva's voice in a diva's body. i watched her bio on a&e a while back, and they were interviewing someone who had worked with her on a movie, and they told this story about how they were shooting outside, and everyone was bitching about how ridiculously hot it was ... everyone except dolly. they asked her why, and she said she had nothing to complain about because her whole life, all she had ever wanted was to be famous, and now she was. she kills me ... i just wanted to scoop her up and put her in my pocket.

I'm suspicious of this thread because it is the poster's first post. Is this a marketing effort?

On edit: I was mistaken.

is it the poster's first post? as far as i can tell, it looks like he/she has been around for a while.

On edit: Okay, looks like ej has been here for a long time! I've just heard so many awful things about that book. There are many many errors in it.

The author is from Dallas and she's a Haliburton. That just makes me not want to buy it. I don't know if she's connected to the corporation or not but the odds are in favor of it. I can't stomach the idea of those people getting a dime from me.

Yes, I have been around a while. I just don't get to post very often. Anyway, I am aware there are errors in the book I really had no intention of buying it until I went to B&N to find a book for by upcoming vacation and was amazed to see the book in the store. I really thought it would be a strictly eBay or internet thing. I started reading and was semi-impressed by the writing. There will be no great book on her until she writes it, has it written for her or dies.
