View Full Version : What did Stevie really think?

I remember during the SYW tour, there was a lot of talk here about how Stevie appeared to be happily giving Lindsey a chance to shine, that she was staying out of the spotlight during his solos, and looked genuinely proud of him. But based on the comment below by Lindsey... I wonder...?
Also - re the second bolded section: if you didn't think all the interplay between them was staged before... :shocked:

Although his previous solo album came out 14 years ago, Lindsey Buckingham didn't spend all the intervening time working on his latest record, "Under the Skin." The Fleetwood Mac guitarist started this album some time ago, with bassist John McVie and drummer Mick Fleetwood from the big Mac on rhythm, almost 10 years ago.
"I guess the three of us being in the studio became an interest of somebody's, and we ended up shelving that material for the live album," Buckingham says. "Then, when I got back in another year, whatever, working on it, there was this interest in doing a Fleetwood Mac album. So all of that material would have been a solo album, but it got diverted into a Fleetwood Mac album."
Buckingham, 57, is conducting phone interviews in his suite at the Ritz-Carlton on a sunny day in New York. He played a sold-out show two nights earlier at Town Hall, the historic downtown theater rich with memories of the Weavers and the live album the folk group recorded there for Buckingham. On Monday, he brings his current solo tour to the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco.
His new record is a quiet, intricate affair, almost entirely acoustic, with little drums or bass. Buckingham recorded the songs in the past couple of years while touring with Fleetwood Mac, carrying a 16-track Korg digital recorder with him and holding sessions in hotel rooms on days off. He finished the record at home and mixed it himself.
"I thought, 'Screw it -- this is what it is. I don't care if it's correct or not. Let them fix it in the mastering,' " the notoriously fussy recording artist says.
Of course, Buckingham's idea of low-fi is clean, crisp, sonically scrubbed and processed recordings with each and every sound on the track dialed in to his exact specifications. He claimed the mastering engineer complained about sibilance in the vocals. But Buckingham, who has produced most of the Fleetwood Mac albums on which he played, is noted for spending endless hours tweaking recordings in the studio. The all-acoustic tracks may have only encouraged those tendencies.
"There was more space to put the production on, so you could get aggressive with your use of delays and stuff on the vocals," he says.
Born in Palo Alto and raised in Atherton, Buckingham and his high school girlfriend, Stevie Nicks, went to Los Angeles to record their 1973 album, "Buckingham Nicks," which producer Keith Olsen brought to the attention of Fleetwood, the bandleader of Fleetwood Mac, when he was looking for a new singer-songwriter. Their first album with the group was Mac's first million-seller. Their second album with the band was "Rumours," the landmark 1977 album that sold more than 15 million copies and was one of the most popular albums of its era.
Buckingham has quit the band and returned a number of times since the 1987 album "Tango in the Night," which featured the brilliant Buckingham production of "Big Love." In 1997, he returned to the fold to supervise the band's new live album, "The Dance," and tour the world again. In 2003, without Christine McVie, the group recorded "Say You Will" under Buckingham's supervision and hit the road again.
"On 'Say You Will,' I had the best time I think I ever had with Fleetwood Mac," he says. "I think the reason, as much as we all missed Christine, was there was a space left for me onstage to be a guy. A lot of testosterone going on up there, and I was having a ball. Stevie, on the other hand, I don't know how she felt about it. I think at the end of the day maybe she wasn't too happy with that."
"Under the Skin" is also filled with songs celebrating Buckingham's newfound joy in family life. He and his wife, the former Kristen Messner, whom he married in 2000, have three children: Will, 8; Leelee, 6; and Stella, 2 ("The 2-year-old will be graduating from college and, if I'm even still here, I'll have the drool cup for sure.").
"So many of the people I know who were parents back in days past," he says, "were not really there for their kids. They had to make tough choices about where to be or how to be. But everybody was sort of conducting their lives the way they thought they had to, and the children suffered. It was something I never even contemplated during those years. I had such a nice upbringing and I never wanted to dishonor my parents and the way they brought me up by doing a crappy job as a dad, or as a husband, really. So once all of that passed and it seemed possible, it didn't seem very probable. I was lucky enough to meet someone, and now I have three kids. And, yeah, it's great."
Fleetwood Mac is still very much alive, just sleeping. Nicks recently called and asked Buckingham to come over. Fleetwood was there, too.
"Mick will usually be in cahoots with whatever is going on with Stevie," Buckingham says. "It's not about anything other than wanting to grease the machinery. They were saying next time we tour, we're going to move the mikes closer together and you're going to look in Stevie's eyes. I didn't say anything. Other than we did this play, I suppose we can do that play, too.
"A couple of months ago I went over there and she hands me a set list of what we're going to do a year and a half from now. So that's what going on now -- everyone wants to get out there at some point. The question is under what terms, or are there any terms. There seems to be a certain amount of political agendas to sort out. But, you know, whatever."
Buckingham is taking "Under the Skin" on the road with three sidemen from the past Fleetwood Mac tours: guitarists Neal Haywood and Brett Tuggle (who will double on keyboards) and percussionist Taku Hirano. He says he is partway through recording his next solo album, planned for release next year, but Buckingham has a history of letting these projects stretch out.
In a phone interview 25 years ago, when punkhood was in full flower and Fleetwood Mac was riding the top of the charts but oh-so square, Buckingham, in a defensive moment, told me he would rather be in the Clash.
"Did I say that once?" he says. "Funny thing is that Fleetwood Mac is probably way more hip than the Clash now. No, I don't want to be in the Clash. I was a guy who wanted to rock and wanted to do certain things. It was always a lesson in adaptation for me. Tearing certain things down and doing what was appropriate for what already existed as the band. That's probably one of the reasons I had so much fun on the road a couple of years ago. It was just more unleashed. No, I want to do exactly what I'm doing now."

The above sounds like Lindsey trying to push Stevie's buttons again, but what do I know.

This sounds like Lindsey maybe being a little jealous (still) of Stevie's career, and her being able to do 4100 seat venues vs. his 600 seat venues. Political agendas? :shrug:
Sometimes it seems Lindsey forgets that it's the "Fleetwood Mac Machine" that enables him to buy these homes and have a great life in the first place. However, I do believe all the talk about having their mics closer together, looking at each other, etc., but that's just all part of the schtick that the average FM fan LOVES to see when they go to a show. It seems Lindsey is just taking it too seriously.

I can only imagine the look on that man's face when she handed him her idea of a tentative set list. I'm glad Nicks is being Girl Scoutly prepared, but it better not be the same, mundane set. Hey, a girl can dream...

Oh what the fukc ever -- He ate that shiitte up on SYW and so did she. They play out the game and have readily admitted it like 1,000 times. It does not mean that they do not love each other, which they both have admitted equally as many times.
Me thinks LB does protest too much!

I remember Stevie saying at the beginning of the whole round of SYW interviews, that she DID miss having Christine because now she was the only woman in a band of men, and that the dynamic was definitely different.
(thats a response to the first bold part)
as for the second bold part, apparently Lindsey is agreeable to the idea, he certainly could have said no but he didnt :shrug: I agree with Jason's comments.

You know, I like Lindsey's music but it wouldnt bother me if he did'nt do anymore interviews. For supposedly being happy as a clam with his cheesehead wife he really comes off as bitchy and miserable.

Those evil two women in the band that for years didn't allow him enough space to be a guy onstage and show all his testosterone.... What a pleasure must be for an independent woman to work ( or live) with this gentleman :rolleyes:

How classy for Mr Buckingham to badmouth his bandmates even before the next tour is started. I'm starting to hope it won't happen anytime soon. Stevie doesn't need it and I'm sure Mick and Lindsey can't find other ways to pay their bills. Can't Stevie tour only with John.... and Christine :thumbsup: ?

Well, the thing that made the band famous from the very beginning was their relationships. I mean, Rumors was all about the various breakups within the bands and the audience loved it. And it was obvious that Say You Will was supposed to be geared towards that from Stevie's perspective. Songs like Thrown Down, Destiny Rules, and Goodbye Baby were all about her and Lindsey. And I'm sure one part of that is giving an audience what they want, and another part is taking a thing that used to be very strong with you and writing about it. So when they are on stage it may be a bit of an act but it's hard not to get drawn up in these feelings. Think about a song that reminds you of a person or an event, does that feeling about the event not return to you every time you hear that song? Now imagine singing that song, especially if the feeling is about a person, and that person is standing next to you and you are able to sing it right at them. No matter how many years later it is, that feeling can still be there. I'm sure they play it up for dramatic purposes, but at the same time, at least for someone like Stevie (not that I know her or anything, LOL), I'm sure there some powerful stuff going on.
Of course, if you had a wife and kids at home and you were hanging around your ex and the two of you were singing songs about the love you guys had and the pain the breakup caused and all that, and you looked into each other's eyes during the songs about your reconcile, don't you think you'd be telling your wife that it's all just an act? Think about it, any public interview you give it probably going to be seen by a lot of people close to you, so you don't want to say "yeah, it's magic when we're on stage, it's just like the old days, it's like being in love again" or anything like that. No matter what you are feeling you're still gonna be, "oh, it's work, it's just a job".
Just my two or three cents. :blob2:

Yep that too :thumbsup: I guess you could take my post as a complaint about the set list but seriously I don't think I have ever complained too badly about it and it wasnt meant to be taken that way. I just thought the post was kind of funny. I think I'm more in the I don't care what they sing--I'll be there no matter what--group! I know they have to play the more popular songs for the casual fans--I'm just hoping they add a couple of surprises to please the hardcore fans as well. Although sometimes I think no matter what there will be someone complaining!! ha ha Just the way it is I guess!! And the Tom shows--pure joy!! :p Wish I could have attended more than 1--but I guess I should be grateful because I know others couldn't attend any of the shows.

I know. But, I think the shippers realize the stuff onstage is mostly an act in that it is the same rote performance each time. I think they are FAR more concerned with the backstage, after hour, and off of the road antics that get reported :shrug: Though, I do readily admit, they do get off on the Landslide hug lasting a second longer, which to me is silly. But, who am I to keep them down if they get off on that :cool:

yeah I agree. I don't see Stevie being that presumptious (sp?) - she knows her place in the band and I don't think handing a set list to Lindsey falls into her line of duties. maybe she handed him some songs to think about...but not a setlist. like Stevie's going to tell Liddy which of his songs they are going to perform? :laugh:

And - they readily and repeatedly admit the emotion is real as well. They just then always are careful (esp. Stevie) to say that emotion stops when they leave the stage, where they can be in love again for those few hours and while singing those songs.
I do, however, think La Nicks is a fairly good actress because I have seen her so many times and, having been on a stage once or twice myself, recognize that stage personage, which she really does not portray in any way in any of the times I have have happened to see her off stage. I mean her job is to sell it to the cheap seats and she does that in spades, esp. when she takes a notion to do so.

I think if you're in a band with multiple songwriters there has to be much negotiation about what goes into the setlist. I don't think it would be an easy task for anyone much less ex lovers! So Stevie handed him her idea and I am sure (somewhat srue?) she didn't expect it to be the final list. It was just her input. I think Lindsey phrased it the way he did to add drama. He gets off on feeding the fan drama I think! I don't know. I don't think anything he said was hateful or hurtful. He's just a nervous nellie IMO so he overanalyzes everything to death.

Oh for the love of god. They are so over. I'm sorry but she refuses to do any new music and Mick (cha ching!) is all for the bull**** "We're still in love after all these years" schtick. Do something different for christ's sake. It's no wonder Lindsey has such a hard time spending time around them. Here he is trying to be a relevant artist and we've got Mick and Stevie scripting out the next tour like it's a Mexican soap opera. I suppose we could get a cardboard cut out of Christine that John could make googly eyes at every once in a while during the set too.
Stevie, I am so damn frustrated with you right now. Make another record and at least try to be the relevant female artist you were (?) are (?) and not a performer who needs all of her ex boyfriends to get her through. Remember Bella Donna? It's time to revisit that period in your career.

I know if I was on stage and singing into my former love of my life's eyes a heartwrenching song I wrote in an heightened emotional state about them, I'd tend to go there even if just for a second.
Also, at LB's soundstage taping, I was maybe ten feet from them and you could feel the emotion, it was palpable. So, I stand by that the emotion is real at times though the actions are rote.

Well, everyone's different. For me, nothing's colder than ashes after the fire. But keeping those ashes around ain't making me a few hundred grand a night either.

The "looking into each others' eyes" stuff is... well, it is what it is, I guess.
But I actually like the idea of them standing a little closer to each other (for aesthetic reasons). Four adults could lay end to end on the stage between Lindsey & Stevie's mics... the distance between them is ridiculous.
Hell, even Mick Jagger & Keith Richards and Steven Tyler & Joe Perry stand closer together on stage!

I think it's funny also, but I don't think it happened. At least not how Lindsey is portraying it. I do not picture Stevie calling some meeting where she handed LB a piece of paper with a set list. I think Lindsey is just down on FM right now, probably because he is rightfully enjoying his solo stuff right now, and is taking yet another opportunity to diss Stevie.

Yes they had their little moments. I am not discounting that at all. There was a certain amount of tension in the air as well. So that night it was for real. Lindsey's relevancy as an artist right now has to do with him putting out a very unconventional record followed by a very unconventional, sparse tour. It is something different for him. He's not trying to reenact something that ended 30 or 20 or 5 years ago to sell tickets. He goes out on stage, plays his show, interacts with his audience and that's that. To me, that's progressive art.
Hey, it's not that it was bad that Stevie toured with Henley or Petty or filmed a DVD with a symphony we'll never see (professionally shot, at least). It's just that IMO that's not progressive as an artist and it's really just become nostalgia and did with the Say You Will tour. She's in some kind of a rut. The woman has written thousands of songs in her career. She gave up everything for it. And now it's the same set list night after night, tour after tour with a few covers thrown in to mix it up. It's kind of like you said a while back. She's semi retired-as far as anything new goes. Hell, her last new release was nearly four years ago. We haven't even gotten a movie soundtrack single since then. If this is the way she wants it, then fine. But for god's sake, polish up and release some stuff for us that's already in the can. Do it through Sanctuary instead of big old corporate Warner's. If this is the end of the road as far as the new recordings are concerned fine. But at least throw us a bone. Say Goodbye (pun intended).

Oops- too late.
Lemme tell ya something, Chrissey mah dear- I am seriously done with Stevie's ****.
She has a ton of money, every recording method at her disposal and a supposed "manic" phase in her that should have her writing 20 songs a year. Jeezus, woman- put out an album. Joni Mitchell was so bothered by her muse that she couldn't stand it anymore and was literally forced into the studio in her early sixties to get it out of her system.
This is why I am NOT going to the Vegas Corporate Thing in December. Here's the set list:
Stand Back
{wardrobe change}
Rhiannnon
{band intro}
Landslide
{wardrobe change}
Dreams
{percussion solo}
{add gold shawl}
Gold Dust Woman
{wardrobe change}
{extended drum combat with percussionist}
Edge of Seventeen
{15 minute "pounding your fists and stomping your feet" encore}
Has Anyone Ever.........
I'm done. Come back to me, Stevie, when you've got a ****ing creative spark to move on.....

Joni Mitchell was so bothered by her muse that she couldn't stand it anymore and was literally forced into the studio in her early sixties to get it out of her system.True, true... but it's been eight years since Joni's last album of all-new songs. The only "new" releases since then (not counting the four or five compilations) have been the jazz standards album and the album of re-recordings of her old tunes. So certainly Joni went through her own period of being less-than-inspired when it comes to writing/recording new material.
Maybe the same is true of Stevie. Perhaps she's going through a period where she's simply not inspired. And I'm sure, as much as we'd all love for her to record something new, none of us wants her to do something uninspired, out of obligation. It'd be much better if she takes her time and then comes back with a group of songs she's really passionate about.
Don't get me wrong -- I'm as frustrated as anyone. I'm just trying to look at it as pragmatically as I can.

She is as whiny as he is and they should cut that crap. Build a folky country-FMrecord from the bottom up, tour it mashed with some solowork of both and cut the rumourscrap. Even if you don't like it, Lindsey stands for his art and is letting his muse do the work. He knows that he's not selling out big venues on his own and just don't give a ****. He doing his noncommercial thing and it's done with high energy and believe. I would have died on the spot if I'd witnessed Stevie, Eddie Vedder and Tom Petty singing along on stage, I must admit, but for the rest: it's just nostalgia golden oldie-time for her. A pity. I wish she had ten percent of Lindsey's artistic drive left in her.

Also - Joni has not toured as much as La Nicks and that must take a toll. Also, in the last nine years, La Nicks has released over 25 or so new songs. So, she has been far more prolific than JM.
In the end, I think La Nicks sees herself as fading a little. I think we will get one more record from her, but that could be just wishful thinking.
As for LB, even if he releases the promised second record, the material he has released over his career possibly could be half of the amount La Nicks has given us.
So, in the big scheme of things, to say La Nicks deserves a break perhaps is an understatement.
Finally, the schtick sells and they all know it and they all participated and participate in it. I think people forget that FM is and has been since perhaps Tusk a carefully choreographed stage show. So, I take it for what it is worth.

like Stew said, yeah, we all want new music. if it happens, it happens, if not, oh well. again, like Brian said, she's earned the right to do whatever the hell she wants at this point. whether that is hop from tour to tour or do nothing at all. the fact that her setlist doesn't change is.so.friggin.old. it is what it is. get used to it. she's not a creature of change anymore, if she ever was at all. she's in a comfort zone, i.e. a rut. maybe she can't decide what to do next. maybe she's content touring just like she is to huge, loving crowds. keep in mind that a large majority of Stevie's fans aren't sitting around bitching and moaning about her stale setlist. 90% of us are all just unlucky bastards to only caught on to her/FM in the 90's and we sometimes forget she's been busting it since the 70's.

I hear where you're coming from and I can appreciate the frustration with Stevie, as I have it myself (just not quite so strong).
Yes, Lindsey is more of a progressive artist right now. And, yes, creatively Stevie is in a rut. Maybe she's depressed, maybe the TISL/SYW experiences combined were exhausting and unpleasant and she wants a break, maybe she just figures she wants to do something else. Maybe her experience with the soldiers has affected her in a profound way that has caused her to rethink how she wants to spend her time.
So then she chooses to demonstrate her "relevance" in other ways that might be more inspiring and meaningful for her. She gets involved with charities (I never hear about LB doing anything like that). Her Vegas gig might be the same old, same old, but someone said Stevie can you help raise some money for college scholarships and she said yes.
And she has been performing non-stop for several years. It's obvious that this is what she loves and by the ovations and big ticket sales for Two Voices/Gold Dust/Tom Petty tours, she knows this is making a lot of her fans very happy.
Stevie put out a lot of creative material while LB gave his fans nothing for years. So, yes, score one for Liddy in 2006, but I just don't think Stevie deserves the bashing she is getting.
Especially based on these LB interviews. I don't believe for a second that the "meeting" played out the way he described. First, I don't think the tour was
1 1/2 years away when they had the meeting. I think they were discussing the 2007 tour at the time. Second, I think the discussion about mics closer to gether and looking at one another was probably more a reaction to how cold the interactions were in SYW tour, and a suggestion that they try being more like a duo. And third, I highly doubt Stevie typed up a setlist and said this what we're doing. She probably came up with something as a starting point for discussion. It was a meeting--that's what professionals do.

Amen.
Moreover, while I certainly do wish La Nicks would change her setlist in a more dramatic manner, she peppers it with new stuff or rarely heard stuff on every tour. I mean La Nicks singing Hotel California was a true treat, not to mention American Girl. Plus, for Enchanted and TISL, she added many new songs. Granted on TISL, she dropped some, but she was sick for a long time on that tour. She also added many new songs and did BC on the SYW tour and did Circle Dance and R&R on the GD tour. So, she does mix is up a little for each tour.
Interestingly, other than the addition of SMAP and perhaps another, LB certainly is not changing his set list and he is performing lots of hits and concert staples from his past :shrug: So, to these eyes, that means he hardly is being a progressive in that vein.

Like Stevie, he's in his own world and you have to take everything said with a grain of salt as the truth, mostly truth, partial truth or purely fabricated. You know that I have been one of the chief bitchers, but in the past year I've come to realize all that Stevie is doing and changes that have been made. I also greatly appreciate her charity work and devotion to family. When the most important person in my life died, I did almost nothing except drugs for years. I fully expected Stevie to go into seclusion for a long time after the death of her father.
The TP tour was one of the greatest moments of Stevie's career, imo.

Stand Back
{wardrobe change}
Rhiannnon
{band intro}
Landslide
{wardrobe change}
Dreams
{percussion solo}
{add gold shawl}
Gold Dust Woman
{wardrobe change}
{extended drum combat with percussionist}
Edge of Seventeen
{15 minute "pounding your fists and stomping your feet" encore}
Has Anyone Ever.........
I'm done. Come back to me, Stevie, when you've got a ****ing creative spark to move on.....
Amen. I don't feel motivated to see her in Vegas because I've been there/done that. And I don't think she needs to "break her back" (sorry for not quoting you directly Stewy) to be relevant. Working in the studio can be a relatively serene environment. After all, it's not 1978 any more.
As a side note about Joni, I'm reading a book called Hotel California that talks about the birth of the whole singer/songrwriter movement in the early 60's and it talks a lot about Joni, Gram Parsons, David Crosby, Neil Young, Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne and many other artists, some now forgotten and how David Geffen and Elliot Roberts made a tremendous contribution to that scene. They also made a lot of money. :lol: It also talks about the petri dish environment that created The Eagles. I find that interesting because of the connection to all of those players (Bernie Leadon, Henley, Felder and Joe Walsh) that worked with Stevie. Even Tony Dimitriades and Waddy are interviewed. I'm only halfway through the book so as far as the timeline goes there is no mention of Fleetwood Mac yet. But even if there isn't, I won't be disapppointed. It's a fascinating glimpse into that whole time period that was responsible for the birth of Buckingham Nicks and the Fleetwood Mac everyone knows now.
Woops. I guess I went a little off topic there.:sorry: :laugh:

god you people depress the **** out of me.
like Stew said, yeah, we all want new music. if it happens, it happens, if not, oh well. again, like Brian said, she's earned the right to do whatever the hell she wants at this point. whether that is hop from tour to tour or do nothing at all. the fact that her setlist doesn't change is.so.friggin.old. it is what it is. get used to it. she's not a creature of change anymore, if she ever was at all. she's in a comfort zone, i.e. a rut. maybe she can't decide what to do next. maybe she's content touring just like she is to huge, loving crowds. keep in mind that a large majority of Stevie's fans aren't sitting around bitching and moaning about her stale setlist. 90% of us are all just unlucky bastards to only caught on to her/FM in the 90's and we sometimes forget she's been busting it since the 70's.
as far as Liddy being more progressive or relevant. I don't know if I read that he is more relevant...if that was the intent, it's bull. if it's simply that he is progressive and relevant, yeah, I can go along with that.
Please don't misunderstand. I'm merely offering my opinion here and trying to stimulate some discussion. I love Stevie. I listen to her and Fleetwood Mac pretty much every day wile I am working. Of course, it helps when you have about 1000 live performances and bootlegs on your iTunes. :laugh:

[QUOTE=Johnny Stew;595982]
I have a feeling she's enjoying having the freedom to just go off on tour with Don Henley or Tom Petty, or fly to Australia, or play a few nights in Vegas. She's still getting to perform and entertain, but without having to worry about meeting deadlines, booking studio time, hiring producers, and so forth.
QUOTE]
At this point in her career, Stevie could easily get away with recording an album every year or two that was written and produced by a team of industry pro's. I mean, look at Celine Dion! She's essentially held a full-time gig in Vegas for the past four years, yet she managed to crap out something like four or five albums during that time. Granted they didn't sell that well and they got savaged by the critics. But her hardcore base ate it up. Barbra Streisand is another one who continues to sh*t out kind of perfunctory efforts every year despite the fact that she admits to hating music, and ends up selling CDs by the truckload. I tend to believe that Stevie holds herself to a higher standard and would rather not record if it meant merely putting stuff out for the sake of putting stuff out. She's a control freak and although we all lover her for that, it be very frustrating for those of us who just want to hear something new. Anything new!

That's what kills me. She could very easily release likely 25 piano demos on her website and chage $.99 to download them. At some point she must have realized there is no way all her demos will even come close to production. Then, there are all the "Reconsider Me" fully produced things out there that we know nothing about.

True, true... but it's been eight years since Joni's last album of all-new songs. The only "new" releases since then (not counting the four or five compilations) have been the jazz standards album and the album of re-recordings of her old tunes. So certainly Joni went through her own period of being less-than-inspired when it comes to writing/recording new material.
Joni is a different deal altogether. Her orchestral recordings are landmarks, and cement her place historically as an artist. The different arrangements also show her evolution as an artist. It's a true pity Stevie hasn't done the same, as I have voiced on numerous occasions. As far as her lack of inspiration goes, she was very forthcoming about it. She stated in more than one interview that she had nothing to write, and would rather paint and spend time with her family. In addition she voiced her disgust for the music industry in general and said she was officially retired.
Who knows what's going on in Stevie's head regarding her career? She seems content to be doing what she's doing. There are lots of people who don't mind the juke box tours. They have moments of fun. I, for one, have almost zero interest in another FM tour, though retirement looms, and I suspect we will have many more of them to come.

Okay, bashing wasn't the right word. Although I wasn't really referring to you. Someone on this board (or maybe sevenwonders) said he was "disgusted" with Stevie because of her lack of recording. That's such a strong word...but anyway, I'll take back the bashing comment. :)

I agree with you. Stevie could have/should have done a BOTH SIDES NOW thing with a complete re-working of her tunes with an incredible orchestra. THAT would be a feather in her cap, for sure.
I, too, do NOT care to see the Mac again unless Christine is back with them.
And even then, I don't want a rehash of THE DANCE, either. But I know that will never happen...

Re-working your tunes with an orchestra has been done several times (I think Metallica started that craze, didn't they?), doing a country album has been done countless times, doing a standards album has been done to death.
All of those things seem kind of gimmicky and overdone at this point... and Stevie's already criticized enough by her fans for doing things that are "rote". :shrug:
Me, I'm not looking for the reinvention of the wheel, or for Stevie to "do like so-and-so did"... I just want a new STEVIE NICKS album in the classic vein.

Honest to God, I wouldn't turn my nose up at ANYTHING she wanted to try at this point, but my preference will always be something in the "Stevie Nicks" style.
I'm trying to be patient (though patience has never been one of my virtues) and wait for her to come around again. I'm sure she will -- we just don't know when.
She also still has two albums left on her Warner Bros. contract... if she doesn't release anything, she'll have to cough up some money to WB.

I can relate to her in a very small way. I spent about ten years working nearly nonstop, and when things slowed down a bit, I went nuts just relaxing (if that makes sense):laugh: I was so tired that all I wanted to do was just what I wanted to do without having to answer to anyone. And speaking as someone going through menopause, it's pretty tiring. I have heard though that you come out on the other side with some great bursts of energy ;) Since Stevie's a couple of years older than me, and has certainly worked her head off for 35 years, and also gone through the death of her Dad, I have a feeling she's just taking some time to do what she wants. I say more power to her:] She seems to have had lots of fun with DH and TP--she has looked radiant. I have a feeling that in another year or so, if we can be patient and wait that long, she'll have another album and tour in her that has nothing to do with FM :nod:

Then you have to at least have to give him equal time for her blaming him for her wardrobe choices on the SYW tour and later saying she didn't like the way her songs came out on the record. :shrug:
To say "Lindsey asked me to be more sober in the dresses" and "Stevie gave me the setlist for the tour" doesn't seem to me the same thing. One looks to me as an advice and the other as an aggressive act of total disrespect to the man who usually is "the word" in Fleetwood Mac. It doesn't sound logic to me that suddenly she decided to become the leader of the band challenging his ego. And why couldn't she say she didn't like how the songs came out? It's still not a crime to express an opinion even if I'm sure someone is working on it.

gldstwmn says it all in her post. Sad but true.
My sensation is that Lindsey even wanting it can't be commercial. Even what he can think that would be commercial wouldn't work. And I'm not saying it as an insult, it's just a fact, IMO. His way of conceiving music could be appreciated only by a limited number of people who decide to go over the difficulties he presents with his intellectually and musically elaborated language and trust him. The same thing happens in every art, he does in music what people like Straub-Huillet, Jean Daniel Pollet do or did in cinema.
It's just that for me it's not a particular merit to be elaborated. It's a characteristic, important as semplicity for other artists who have the natural capacity to connect with a far larger number of people. Who could say at what point is Stevie's artistic drive? How can you say what is her relationship with her writing right now? Which are her fears?

Oh, people.
They can't ever win, can they now? It doesn't matter what they do, or how they do it, or when they do it and in what capacity, people will always complain. I want to complain about the complainers! Stevie has done this for a long time, if she wants to sit at home on her ass, by all means, let her do that! She's earned it. It's not fair to compare her to other artists and what they are are doing at this point, because guess what? They're different people! If you don't want to catch a show because you think you'll get bored, then stay at home. If you don't want to hear another greatest hits album, then don't listen to it. It's as easy as that. If you don't want to follow another tour with them gazing into each other's eyes while singing their old time classics, again...stay home. There are still enough people that eat it with piles of sugar on top, they're not going to worry about the few that won't bother to show up. I for one am glad that she's still doing what she obviously enjoys, which is performing. I'd rather have her do that than witness something that I know is forced upon her and goes way beyond her comfort zone. And let's face, when has Stevie ever really done that? It's always been an album, then a tour, another album, then a tour. And we've survived decades of that, so why now, after all that hard work, should we expect her to do something off the beaten path? Because Lindsey's doing it? And really, he's not even wandered that far off, aside from a scaled down album and a scaled down tour. He's basically still doing the same thing as they have always done. And he enjoys it, which for me makes it all the more enjoyable also. So again, please Stevie, do what you enjoy, otherwise I'd have a hard time enjoying it also. It's obvious she doesn't enjoy the whole process behind bringing out new material -in whatever form- anymore. How many times has she alluded to that now? I cringed when I learned that she forced herself to go to Phoenix for a month and 'write like a maniac' for whatever reason. (I suspect it had more to do with the record company suits than by her own free will.) She had plenty of demos handy, yet she still felt like she had to do that. And people wonder why she complained about SYW not being an enjoyable experience for her.

there've been a lot of great points and observations here. i agree with many - i've read through the latest posts, and would love to quote and respond directly. but i just worked a 13-hour day and my head is overflowing with us election stuff. so i'll just try to write out my thoughts....
i personally agree she should be allowed to do what she wants. of course. i think my frustration is primarily born of the fact that i have loved this woman and her music and her words since the very first time i heard her 25 years ago. her music has moved me - and there was just something about her. she's magical. i've loved her and fm like no other artist. i have seen so many shows - i just couldn't NOT go to see her. over and over. and though i have shaken her hand, and had "moments" with her - i have yet to meet her and speak one-on-one with her. and so that dream endures. so what am i saying here? i guess i'm feeling frustrated on one level by the stuff i've been reading about her lately - and from what we've been seeing: the same old songs, the same old choreography, the seeming focus on holding onto the past, and making a buck. it's like SHE'S given up on life. for someone for whom creativity has been such a key to her very being, it surprises me that she is content to be still. to not move forward. to no longer create. to no longer take chances. to stay safe. that's not the stevie i have loved for so long. i'm feeling a little duped, if you know what i mean. there is so much incredible music out there right now. honestly, i haven't listened to stevie in months. my ipod is full of indie artist no one has heard of and alternative groups who are taking great chances with their music - and to great success. they excite me. there is no greater feeling than discovering an artist no one else has ever heard - and sharing him/her. i'm finding it hard to get excited about seeing the same old songs by stevie. it's not that i don't still love her - i always will. she is far too deeply ingrained in who i am. but she's sort of become like a crazy old aunt - she was way cool when we were both younger. but i keep her hidden now. i don't feel like she's really into this anymore. and if she's not - that's cool. but, stevie, stop doing it halfway. stop just rolling out the same show - the same "best of" CD. don't ruin my memories of you.

You're right. And what you say is a compliment. Not an insult. If you listen to all of his solorecords, none of them is commercial, and I don't think he's so dumb that he thought they were. But alot of noncommercial music has become commercially succesful. And logically, he has had his hopes up that that would happen one moment in time. Today, he's over that. I think that kind of ability works for him well only if he as a filter to use, and his filters are Fleetwood Mac or Stevie. Through them he seems able (sometimes) to cope in a mellower way with his tendency to overwrite, overplay, overthink (and again these aren't negative aspects for me, but just components of his style).
