View Full Version : Stevie's most intense song

Or maybe I should say the one she sings with the most passion? I just got through listening to the Silver Springs cut on the Rumours bonus CD, and the way she sings this just brings chills, especially her voice at the very end...this is seconded only by her performance of SS on The Dance :blob2:
I'm just curious about what my fellow Ledgies think is her most intense studio song? :wavey:

Have you heard the live version from 77?? Kansas City I believe. Strand brought that one to my attention and I literally cried the first time I heard it.
studio?? I'm going to have to think about this one.
Obviously Beauty and the Beast. I'll think of others.

I can't post it, but maybe some very nice person will post it for you. It blows the dance out of the water. (on edit...the quality of the recording isn't great...but every thing else is brilliant)
I've not heard the one from the rumours bonus. Is it the same one from The Very Best of FM?? or is it a live version?

It's an extended and less polished version of what you hear on TVBOFM. It's my second favorite though. The Dance version is my #1, but I might change my mind if I ever get my hands on that live version you mentioned.

Sisters Of The Moon Live '82 (Mirage video taping) with the Tokyo '77 version of Rhiannon running a close second. The latter must be seen on video to be fully appreciated.
ON EDIT: I see you were looking for studio songs. In that case I'd still have to say Sisters Of The Moon and Gold Dust Woman.

I guess studio versions would be hard to figure on. and after all, the Dance was live  Now that I think of it SOTM was really terrific, both live and studio. That Mirage video was something else--definitely vintage Stevie ;)

I think Twisted is pretty intense and, though it was written for the movie, it is, to me, sooooo about she and LB being twisted by fate (the arms of the storm) - a la what she said about Thrown Down, which also is pretty intense.
Also - here are two live versions of SS from 77. A video of this would be, to say the least, awe inspiring. But, to my knowledge, none exist.

I like Twisted, but it doesn't really strike an intense chord in me. I'd go with Silver Springs... it's practically overwhelming, especially the old demos/live performances. I like the outtake on the Rumours second disc the best. And the one on The Dance.
And SOTM. Intense silence and all of that. ;)

^^yeah, I thought about Wild Heart while I was at work today.
Rhiannon from rosebud is pretty intense (even though it's not studio. :sorry: )
Insider is also pretty damn intense. Studio or live (although I prefer live...duh!!! )

I'd add Planets of the universe, Everybody Finds Out, Storms, Christian, Space Needle, Joan of Arc, Goodbye Baby (especially live or in Destiny Rules doc).

Even though thing song was very different by the time they did it in The Dance, there's something so powerful about that version. I mean, here Stevie and Lindsay are, many years later, doing this song that caused so much pain in Stevie's life. It was taken off of Rumors, it was denied her when she wanted it for her own best of collection and now, she is finally allowed to sing it. And here these two ex-lovers stand, looking at each other, many years after their breakup, after all the water under the bridge and all the tears, and she's able to look him in the eye and sing "you'll never get away from the sound of the woman that loves you... never get away... never get away... never get away". I had goosebumps the first time I saw that.

I'm going to have to pick the rocker route for this. "Long Way To Go" solo. "Everybody Finds Out" with Fleetwood Mac (later in the song).
Edge of Seventeen for me.

I really think that Mirage video version is so over rated by fans. I mean its incredible on its own if it were the only live version i had seen, and it was the first one i'd seen and i was blown away to when I saw it, but I still think there are a few really superior versions especially the St. Louis 79 one that was also the Tusk video one.

overrated? are you serious? there's no way to overrate that performance. it is killah. she rips that song up one side and down the other. and I may be the total opposite of you b/c other live versions (like St. Louis) always fall short of my expectations after seeing Mirage.

Smile At You (early demo) - how can this be considered anything but intense?! FLAAAAAAAAAMIN!!!!
Silver Springs, studio version
SOTM, both Tusk Doc and Mirage Video - both are super intense in different ways

Spider Dance? I call it the "Lion Prance".
Without second thought, it is Sara, for me.
It is the most "soul baring" song ever written and to me, that equals intense.
Everytime I hear the "would you swallow your pride/could you speak a little louder" part, I want to scream.

it is hard not to vote for sisters as the most intense -seeing how it starts out -
"Intense Silence" and all - and on the studio version the killer fade in is wicked in of itself
(and does anyone have a link to the st looouiiiie 79 version - would love to see / hear it )
but my official vote is gonna go to Outside the Rain - but more because of the ways i have seen her render this song down to it's soul live -
even during "the rough years" she pulled this song out and shook my ass up -
"look in my eyes - wontcha touch my face - if you think baby that there's anyone in this whole wide world that could ever replace me"
she loses me when she talks the part - " and if so - then take it away"
but . . .then i have all of dreams to recover - ( i know i know - studio not live - )
solo i think i have to go with fall from grace - but once again it is how she wrenches this song around live that makes it so intense for me - being it is a rocker she really has to punch it up to stay out in front of the band and just keep up - she has very little time for her to do anything but stand there and wail away - love it love it love - no extra spinning - no teapots - just intense rock and roll -
IMHO of course

intense:
1)existing in an extreme degree . . .
2)very large: CONSIDERABLE
3)strained or straining to the utmost
4)feeling deeply / deeply felt
so my friends at merriam-webster helped me out there above -
damn our girl lives the definition doesn't she -
Stevie has always led a life to an extreme degree. Even during her CONSIDERABLE periods she has always shown she was deeply feeling her straining to the utmost brassiere.:] :]  :] :]
ok sorry - just a giddy morning

I chuckled at that statement because it is so true. I think that is why we all tend to love this clip. It is intense and draws you right in. Yes, I think the hair does remind me of a lion and so the "lion prance" description fits very well here.
So, the most intense song for me has to be SOTM followed by a very close second for Smile At You (Angry demo)
