Some of us Schmucks have jobs where we occasionally encounter celebrities. I have a friend who's a server at a very nice seafood resturant here in Minneapolis and one night a local tv couple showed up and proceeded to move themselves right to the reservation desk and demand to be seated immideately. My friend basically said, there is a line of people and you'll have to wait like everyone else. The couple were incredulous and you guessed it said "Dont you know who we are. We know the owner of this place and if you want to have a job tomorrow we suggest you seat us now."   Just wondering if any of you have ever encountered something like this in your job?

Not celebrities, but we do get spoiled brats who feel their entitled to more than everyone else. It usually goes something like this.

"Have a seat, they'll be right with you."

"I don't have time to wait. Can they see me now?"

"When it's your turn, they'll call you."

"But I'm busy! I'm a med/dental/law student!"

I'm not stereotyping either, 99% of the time it's that particular student population. Oh, and the athletes. Their coach will actually try & call us & demand we see them immediately. Whatever. I don't give a damn what sport they play, their fever of 99 with sniffles does not take precendence over the liberal arts kid who has been vomitting for 4 days.

well, being a celebrity myself, I have to say that I would never act in such a manner. yes, I may require that my table be lit in a certain fashion, that I have my own personal waiter and allowed to order food not on the menu...but never like this.

Lawyers with egos? Surely, you jest.

My best "Don't you know who I am?" was when I had a belligerent phone call demanding to know if one of our Para-legals was at work so the caller could slap a subpeona on them.

I asked who the caller was - defence lawyer, aggrieved victim, witness?

The guy kept shouting, "I am Hugo Rich!". Meant nothing to me, and I told him so. Several times.

Turns out later he was one of Australia's most notorious criminals who had changed his name by deed poll but still expected me to know who he was. Not knowing seemed be getting really steamed up.

Local celebrities are the worst kind. They've always got trash circulating about them too so you'd think they'd just kiss everybody's ass til they made it big nationally and get the hell outta Dodge. But NOOOOOO. They gotta suck the life outta every person they meet.

My friend Bob, a realtor, was going door to door once in the richest Dallas neighborhood attempting to pass out his card to potential sellers when the woman of the house answered the door. After he introduced himself and presented his card she asked him, completely aghast "Do you know who I am?". He had no idea, but her maid came running to the door just then and Bob said to her "you better help this lady out, she doesn't know who she is." I thought that was pretty damn funny.

reminds me of the story where a princess gets on a plane and her obviously gay steward asks her to put up her tray for take off. he asks repeatedly and she declines. finally she says "Don't you know who I am?" and he says "No, sorry I don't."

she says "I'm a princess."

he says "Well, I'm a queen, bitch, so I outrank you. now put your damn tray up!"

There was a story that when Ronnie Ray-gun first ran for Governor of California he was door knocking. He knocked on the one door, and when the guy answered his wife screamed out, "Who is it?"

Ronnie asked "I'm running for Governor. Don't you know who I am?" - "No", came the reply.

"I used to be in the movies" - "Sorry".

"My wife was in the movies, too" - "Still nothing".

"My initials are 'R R'" - "Hey Honey, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans are running for Governor".

My few retail celebrity encounters have been nice. My favorite was Ben Kingsley - he was shopping for Halloween stuff at the store I worked at and didn't bring in his ID. The clerk didn't want to sell him the stuff. What was hysterical was that the store was owned by a Hindu family from India. The guy couldn't have been nicer and never said, "I played Gandhi, people!" (I wanted to, but that might not have gone over well.)

I've met a lot of famous people because of my job. More often than not, they're totally cool (last week Tyrese sat down on my desk to show me pictures of the new Transformers from the movie next summer on his Sidekick!). I think it's really hilarious that the absolute rudest, bitchiest, most entitled people I've met in four years of this are the members of the most popular female gospel group in the country.

I would think it's the assistants and people running the meet and greet that make these demands. Paula has some show on in the evening with an audience and she seems to really enjoy the people. I'd like to think she's as sweet as she is on TV. Finding out she is a mean old hag would crush me :distress:

Rachael Ray came to Minneapolis to do her $40 a day show. She went to this quirky little bar (which I love) and was a raging bitch to everyone there. Total ice queen.

For various reasons I've have lots of dealings with celebrities, everyone from Z listers to the big A listers.
Generally speaking, the bigger the star, the nicer they are. Two notable exceptions are Jennifer Aniston and kylie Minogue - their nice girl images seem to be purely for the cameras and when there are 'important' people around.
(Angelina Jolie, however, is fantastic, one of the nicest celebrities I have met).

The worst attack of 'don't you know who I am' seems to strike the 'models/actresses' whose sole claim to fame is that they have slept with a famous man.
I did some voluntary work for a charity for a couple of years and we regularly invited celebrities to our events. The big names were almost always gracious and generous.
The 'model/actress' types on the other hand would put forward an absurd list of demands before they committed to attending. Though they all made big play in the media about their involvement with charity, some of them even asked us for a 'shopping allowance' if we wanted them to turn up at the event.
They had such an inflated opinion of their fame and 'talent' it was embarrassing.

I have interacted with a few celebreties in places I worked but I don't think any of them had an attittude, although a couple asked to be in closed sections of restaurants, and we granted them that. Most of the stars, or semi-stars seemed to be relieved to be treated with little fanfare, and to be allowed to slip in and out of the establishment without attention.

when I worked at a little music club, Santa Monica:
Sean Penn & Madonna
Harry Dean Stanton
Jackson Browne
John Doe
Natalie Merchant and the Maniacs

Other music club/bar SF:
Cyndi Lauper
Chris Isaak
Ian McCulloch
Dave Alvin

Restaurants:
Adam Arkin
Lauren Holly

That's actually my favorite celeb encounter at a workplace.
He came in very quietly, and was looking around before I even noticed him, and it was a tiny store. I was playing a neville brothers cd, and he was suddenly in front of me and he held the cd in front of me (the play copy) and blurted, "do you know where I can find this?" I know that I blushed when i realized who he was, but I ended up suggesting a few similar cds, and finding that one for him, and I even got to joke with him a little, although I don't recall any of the banter. Some other customers started hovering, and he got nervous, bought the cds and bolted.
I guess he was in a manic phase, but I think it was fear of being assaulted by fans.
I saw him a few times with his son at the Golden Gate Park, and later a boyfriend of mine did a children's party (the oldest son, I think) at Robin Williams' place out in Sonoma. I talked to him again at that party (he was super shy) but I didn't mention the record store meeting.

OOOHm I forgot about an excellent "Don't you know who I am?" story. Francis ford Coppola once came to the door at the Paradise Lounge, when I worked there, and he had his arms around two young girls with him, who looked underage. I have no idea who they were, or if they were relatives, groupies, or actress hopefulls. In any case, the doorman asked for ID, and they didn't have any, and FF Coppola kept arguing, and aasking "Don't you know who I...?" and the door man wouldn't let them in. FFC made an ass of himself. It's a big deal at a bar, since you can be shut down and fined for allowing underage people in.

Well, none are too exciting.

Let's see, Sean and Madonna came to see Harry Dean Stanton play and they came in without ANY papparrazzi, and we snuck them up to the upstairs viewing room.

When Billy Zoom came into the record store where I worked, it was to buy a tape, because the band (X) was nearby recording "Wild Thing" and they had run out of tape—he must've just needed a cassette copy of the demo.

Adam Arkin (he was on that Doctor show at the time) and Lauren Holly came in, they sat alone in the back of the restuarant, and I believe Lauren holly was still married to Jim Carrey. I did break my usual professional rule of not being a fan-while-working by telling Adam what a lifelong fan I am of his dad. I waited until after they had paid, and were leaving. Oops! I don't know how kind that was of me, but I AM a lifelong fan of his dad's. He took it pretty well.

Ian Mculloch (Echo and the Bunnymen) was with his mgr, and trying to score drugs

Cyndi Lauper was with her backup singer, who used to sing with one of my coworkers, and he introduced us.

Natalie Merchant was very shy, but I actually became good friends with the guitar player (who, sadly, died about 5 years ago) and we used to correspond.

What else....Chirs Isaak did a 5 night stint at the club where I worked, and I flirted a lot with one of the band memebers, which was fun. Chris Isaak is very exacting with his band, and his show, which is why they are so tight.

I am a pit boss on the Vegas strip.

I usually have a standard sentence when I hear "Don't you know who I am?"

"Yeah, someone who doesn't know how to act in public" followed by security throwing them into the street.

On rapper (after acting like a typical thug) said "I am on Geffen Records - Don't you know who I am", I said " Someone who thinks money can buy respect and class - and is still a nobody" and booted his A$%.

The security guard (who was also black - to head off the black oppression excuse- also told him to pull up his pants. He had those overly baggy pants crap on.

It happens to me to meet some celebs for press conferences or interviews. Among the international ones I haven't encountered really rude people (even though sometimes in their entourages there are ex Gestapo officers... Sting people for example).
Most of them are on the nice/very nice scale (my favourites so far are Meryl Streep, Jonathan Demme and Jackie Chan).

Then there are some that would answer with just "yes" or "no" if you take them in the wrong day, for example Sean Connery and Robert De Niro, but recently they've been both quite gracious.

Right on choice of words for Ms. Keaton. I have been a huge fan of hers forever (Annie Hall & Manhattan are two of my all time faves).
I met her years ago when she was in Atlanta to accept an award.... and she was precisely as you said: gracious..nervous..guarded..sweet. She has that "celebrity aura" that I imagine the classics had.... as opposed to too many celebs today where you know they are every. bit. as shallow as you would imagine.

I coordinate a lot of author signings, and most of the authors are great. Gloria Estefan, Naomi Judd, Douglas Preston, were all incredible.

Brad Meltzer is my favorite author to work with. If you get a chance to read his stuff, do, and then go meet him. Fantastic person.

On the other hand...

There was an instance where we had a HUGE children's author who writes under a pen name. The event was so large we had to secure the high school auditorium and hand out tickets to limit the number of people to 1000. Mr. Author did an event the night before and was there until 3:30 am. SO the day of OUR event, we get a call from his publicist saying he is 'exhausted' and cannot possibly do a signing.
After an hour of wrangling he settled on doing his stage show and extending it an hour. Then he left, and we had 1000 people to mollify.
The kicker is that he did not want to announce anything remotely near 'He's tired and has to cancel,' and wanted us to be the fall guy. We politely declined and actually had to negotiate what the announcement would be.

(to his credit, he did make a generous donation to the school's literacy fund)

gracious..nervous...guarded..sweet.Right on choice of words for Ms.
Love me some Diane Keaton. :wavey:

this makes me so happy to hear. i've never had the pleasure of meeting her (which is a good thing, because i'm pretty sure i wouldn't be able to act normal around diane), but she has always struck me as one of those rare celebrities who has no pretention. she has always come across as such a genuine individual. i wish there was more of that in show business.
