First, it was my fridge. Then my hard drive went out. Then my water heater went out. Now my motherboard is out. Screw it. I'm buying a new computer. What manufactured computers have you all had luck with and recommend? I built the last one, but I'm not going there this time. I don't have the money!

Geez Maria! I'm so sorry - you're right, if it's not one thing it's another - it never seems to end, does it?
Well I know a lot of people on here swear by MACs. But I bought an HP when I got my computer (1 year ago) It's awesome. I love it - I've had no problems and it's still going strong and fast...

that really sucks - computers can be such a pain. my first recommendation is always a mac, but i know some people are really averse to them. after that, i'd say go with toshiba - all my PC friends swear by them.

I know what you mean about not having the money. I use the computer at the local library.

Maria, I wish you weren't such a whiner.
JK. That really sucks. We have a Dell, but it's no better or worse than anyone else's I've heard about. Most people I know just go for whichever one has the best rebate/deal at Cirtcuit City or Best Buy & they seem to do just fine.
HEY! Check with the school you're going to. If they have an IT/computer dept. they can often get you computers at a great price.

I have a Mac and I love it. It's SO easy to use, it requires next to no software, and it never has any problems. Plus, it won't pick up a virus either.

That's what I did :o Well sort of - I didn't look for the best deal - but I looked for the the cheapest computer that offered everything I need. And I've not been disapointed...except for the evil printer that tells me it's out of paper when it's not. That I could do without...
Just stay away from eMachines! Unless they've improved since the last time someone I know bought one....

I have to recommend Mac as well.
I used to love Dell comps, but have grown to hate them.

No ****. I think my dad invested in Yahoo! a long time ago, but I assume the stock for that one went to hell after the birth of Google.

Paula, I wish you weren't such a hooker. ;)
I think I'm going to Best Buy today and check out HP's. Anyone had any experience with their customer service? I heard Dell's customer service sucks. I want to go with a Mac, but I can't afford one. :distress: All I can really afford to buy is the computer itself... I have the monitor.

Maria, when mine was fried about 6 months ago(my friend finally fixed it), I went to IU- they have a store where they sell off their used ones(and they've all been gone through, and brought back to scratch). Although, the deals weren't as good as I'd expected - I think 1.6 machines were going for like $230. Well, it turns out that Wallyhell had 3.2 machine for $328. So I decided that it was worth the extra $100 for a puter that was new, and twice the speed.
Anyhoo, my friend called, and said he'd fixed this antique POS, so I'm still on it!
Everyone needs a friend who is really good at fixing computers.

I got a new one. Its a HP Pavilion with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, and DVD burner with Lightscribe. This thing is sweet!!! Thanks for all your suggestions. In the end, I found this to be the best bang for the buck.

I was just going to answer your customer servie question - with my HP - I haven't needed customer service (knock on wood) - and my computer is now officially a year old.
I've been very happy with my HP - and I hope you're happy with yours as well...
