Yeah, that is so disappointing. I really enjoyed Christine's website's forum. I met a lot of nice people over there. This place (The Ledge) isn't the same -- I'm not saying anything against it, but I enjoyed having a place that was just for Chris fans. (Plus the blinking, jumping smileys at this forum very literally give me a headache -- I can only stay on this forum for about two minutes for that reason -- tell me I'm not the only person left on the internet who hates smileys!!!!!)

I totally agree about the Chris website forum being just for Chris fans. I guess it stayed up longer than I thought it would since it's been nearly 2 1/2 years since ITM was released. It's funny about the website itself. They only hacked into the message board, not the main site.

The smilie function doesn't bother me at all, but nicepace I think you can disable it here on the Ledge. At the bottom of the page under Posting Rules, it says smilies. Mine says ON. Maybe you can turn yours off.

whyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!?!? this was NOT what i wanted to wake up and see. :distress: i guess it was the same people from the first time; .they were turkish too.

i think the reason they hacked into the forum and not the main site is because the forum is built on php and the site is just regular html. no one has updated the php in awhile, so they probably found a loophole somewhere and used it to get in. if someone had just been abe to access the forum, they could have updated it with whatever security patches were necessary! it would have taken 5 minuts. it's really upsetting. and i would use another sad smiley right now, but i don't want joanne to get a headache and leave! I sent him an email on the 25th September regarding the idiot troll but I haven't heard from him at all.

I am assuming that he is not concerned with the current site. This could mean that neither he or Christine is bothered about having a site or he's working on getting a new one going.

I hope it's the latter but quite honestly I think it could be the former.

Gail, is there an email address we could all be using to email Martin Wyatt about the site? I think if we all sent an email maybe he would notice. (Maybe not, but we can't just do nothing.) You can send me a private message if you'd rather, but I think I'd like to at least try. It's an embarrassment for Christine to have a website that hasn't been updated in over two years and a message board that's been hacked, and nobody cares except the fans. (Boo, hoo.)

My guess is that Christine has more or less forgotten she has a website. For those of us who use the internet every day for all kinds of things, it's almost hard to remember what it was like before the internet, but for Christine, that's the way it is. If she wants to know the weather forecast, she puts on the radio. Can you even imagine?

By the way, I've disabled smileys, so more headaches! All I had to do was set my browser to not display images on this site. I can't tell you what a relief this is to look at plain text that sits still. Text rules.

I don't have Mr. Wyatt's e-mail address either. Gail, if you think it might be a good idea for the rest of us to e-mail him, send me a private message.

I'm sure Chris doesn't have much if any interest in her website, although she did just recently get a laptop & was using it.

I remember in George Hawkins Q & A, he mentioned that she didn't like to communicate via e-mail since she liked to hear the sound of a human voice instead.:D

I'm more upset at the way that message board ended, rather than the fact that it ended. It stayed up longer than I ever thought it would.

It is weird about the trolls on that board rather than here in this forum. I still think having a moderator here helps ALOT. There was a troll on the Ledge a few years ago (before the Chris forum began)who absolutely HATED Christine. He was unbelievably vulgar. He felt that Chris persecuted Stevie. This was before you got here, Homer.;) I know he got at least one strike, because he complained about it. I'm not a tech wiz either. But I remember the Penguin(and the Ledge) was hacked into several years ago, supposedly by somebody in Portugal(maybe Eddy Quintela? ). Then the entire site was moved to a new server. I think it's been OK since. Maybe the new server is more secure?

I think having moderators helps a lot as well.

also here I don't think you can register with a hotmail type email address.

Our troll on Chris' site had several different email addresses none of which would have been allowed here.

Personally I think Christine (or Martin Wyatt) need to make their minds up whether they actually want a site or not.

Either have an updated secure site with a forum or just forget about the whole thing and we'll chat here.

I agree. I wonder if the indecision has something to do with Chris being unsure whether she wants to ever record again. If she is totally, completely 100% retired, why would she even have a website?

Yes I think you could be right about that.

We thought, and probably she thought, she was retired when she came back to England and then we got In the Meantime.

Maybe she really is retired now but as you say why bother with a website?

i'm bad at explaining these things, but i'll give it a shot.

christine's board and the ledge are both built on php, which is a scripting language. hackers target scripts because they are comprised of so many parts, so the more parts, the more chances there are of finding a weakness that they can exploit.

vbulletin (which the ledge uses) and phpBB (which christine's forum used), are always on the lookout for problems in their code; it's a never ending process. you fix something, someone finds a new way to hack in. you fix that, they find a way to hack through your fix. repeat ad nauseum. so companies are constantly issuing newer versions of their product, or offering security patches, updates, trying to keep one step ahead of idiots like our turkish friends.

in a way, it's kind of like anti virus software: in order to stay alive, it has to keep updating itself.

because there was no one updating christine's site, the exploit the hackers used to get in was never covered by a security patch.

hope that was sort of helpful.

unfortunately there's no way to tell because you can register a domain name for up to 10 years i think. you might even be able to do it for longer than that, i'm not quite sure.

anyways, i would think that if they had no interest, they would just take it down or put it on permanent hiatus. i mean, someone had to have gone in to take the forum link off the main page. just take the whole site down if you have no use for it anymore. it certainly doesn't benefit anyone having old information out there.

And, Mr. Wyatt did tell Gail that he hoped to move the site to a new server & get Sanctuary out of the way.

If by chance they do decide to do something with the site, they'll have to totally re-do it. Right now, the sole purpose of the site is to promote ITM, which is nearly 2 1/2 years old.

Yes the site has served its purpose in terms of promoting ITM so they will have to start from scratch.

But if she's not up to much these days (musically speaking) then I'm not sure what they'd put on it.

I tried posting a new post and it didn't work, but I was able to read all the old posts. So if anyone wants to rescue a thread from over there and re-start it over here, those threads *are* available.

My browser is Firefox on a Windows system -- I don't know if this would work with Internet Explorer or any of the other browsers. And it doesn't *fix* the problem, just makes it so we can still get that old information. We had some good threads going over there when we got hacked. (May the person who hacked our board be submerged slowly, toe first, in a vat of boiling oil, while being forced to listen to fingernails scraping across a blackboard.)

Can anyone bring over any threads here that may be of interest to some on this board? I'm using Internet Explorer 6 on Windows XP. I don't know what java is or how to disable it. I'd be afraid to do that if I knew what it meant. Also, I don't have the bookmark of the message board anymore. I deleted it since I thought the board was gone.

Thanks, Aisling. I really don't want to start disabling stuff on my computer, especially since I wouldn't really know what I was doing.:)

Why don't you import what you think. You might want to bring over that last thread...you know;) He's at it again. I don't think we were done with that one. :D

ha ha ha, i can already tell that one's going to be really popular over here.

anyway, i'm driving out of the city after work. depending on what time i get in tonight, i might be able to do it later this evening.

yeah go figure. anyway, i tried the java disabling method as suggested by joanne, but i can't get it to work. :( i was able to get the 'he's at it again' thread by taking the source code on the hacked main page and then recreating the real page on my hard drive. anyway the way i did it is a really long and tedious process, so it might take me a while to get certain threads over here. some of them are really long, i never noticed before!

again, if anyone has a "favourite" thread that they want rescued, please let me know.

but i will say right now that i refuse to import the game thread. that would probably take a decade. LOL

You must really be a tech wiz. I'm impressed. Why don't you try to import the threads that had the most recent responses, assuming they're not too long. Don't worry about the game thread. I'll bet that might be the longest thread on the board.

Anyone tried Chris own forum lately? I get a different failure message now. I don't know if that means that someone's working on it, or???

We should all email Martin again.

It certainly looks different. I don't know whether that's a good sign or not!

I'm not sure emailing Martin Wyatt would help. Either he already knows about it because he's got someone on the case or he knows nothing and therefore can't help.

That Turkish hacker message is gone. Now it says something about not being able to connect to the server. I don't know what all that stuff means. Someone definitely did something to it. I hope they're trying to move it to a new server, but I don't want to get my hopes up. The main page of the website is still the same, by the way.

i'm not exactly sure what happened, but i have a few theories. the most likely one is that the database was altered or deleted. either our turkish hacker did it (although i personally think that kind of work is too complicated for what his skill set seems to be), or someone legitimately went in and did it. the weird thing is that the actual pages still exist, they just won't display because of the failed connection to the database. if someone, like the webmaster, wanted to just get rid of the whole thing why keep the pages alive?

i hope that someone is trying to fix it. but i couldn't be completely wrong about all this, so, i won't get to excited about the possibility.

the sad thing is that if no one is trying to fix it, i can't go in and get any more threads. there were so many old ones that i never got around to picking up. :distress:

That is sad. There were some great old threads that are probably gone forever.:distress: At least you were able to salvage a few.:)

I hadn't even considered that it could have been that Turkish hacker. I would think it is more likely that it's someone either trying to fix it or just getting rid of it. The actual website(christinemcvie.com) is still intact.
