This might be just what I need. I'll get on the scale and update this later with whether or not I've lost/gained in the past week.
On edit: I'm down 1 1/2 pounds. But since I was up a pound last week I will count it as -.05.

I just don't care anymore. My body WANTS to be 25 lbs overweight. I CAN lose it, but keeping it off requires CONSTANT effort, running 3 nights a week, and eating F*CKING Lean Sh*Tsine every night.
And the weird thing about the extra 25 is- I don't gain anymore than that. My body apparently is at home at 185. As much as I enjoyed 160, HONESTLY, it wasn't worth all the extra work(well, I did get laid a little more, without trying, but still....).
At the end of the day, nobody's gonna love you any more, just because you're in great shape.
Now, I eat what I want.
I drink what I want.
I don't get any bigger.
And I'm okay with that!

Yeah, welcome to set point. I have to at least do something though or I hate the way I feel and look. My body likes to be at this weight too, well 10 lbs heavier actually. But I don't! Maybe I can teach it. I seriously don't have the energy for 6 days at the gym and god bless those of you who do!

Yeah, well, it's not just about how you look. I know that I feel much better when I work out than when I don't. Don't you want to feel healthy, strong, and energetic? Adult onset Diabetes runs in my family, so I don't play around with my weight; I don't want some horrible lifelong disease due to something i can control.

god. I don't have the energy. and this was going to be my week to crack down even further. I will be working late again tonight (although overtime is "discouraged") and I don't know that I'll have the energy to walk 2 miles tonight. maybe I'll just do weights.

I'm doing a simultaneous fast and colon cleanse, so I'd probably win. Did you know your colon can store pounds and pounds and pounds of toxic crap? Yep. Good times. Gross, good times.

I will do weigh in on Friday. Too much work the last week, and only swam about 3 times. But I seriously need to drop 10 pounds, maybe 15. I feel slothlike and am just not f*ckable, IMO. The odd thing is...the last few months it hasn't mattered in terms of what other guys think. I can't figure that out. They always want seconds.
Bottom line, though, the 32 waist pants are gettin too snug. And I am NOT buying a new wardrobe.
Posting weight in 4 days.

It sure is. Wanna see pics? In some autopsies they have found colons that weigh 40 lbs. Also, colons that were 9 inches in diameter but with just a pinhole size opening.
Yep. Lots of people have been cured of lots of things with colon cleansing, too. And fasting. I recommend checking out the research.
Oh, and P.S., I was at 149 this morning.

I'm doing the Master Cleanser for the fast, and got an herbal colon cleansing kit, with the psyllium seed husks, and the bentonite clay, and various other herbs. All the usual suspects.
Here's just one site talking about the Master Cleanser, there are several. I had a friend who did it, too, and she was amazed and renewed. She did 30 days!

My weight loss is going quite slow - but that's the best way...easier for maintenance in the long-run and I know I'm being healthy so the feeling I have now far outweighs the fact that I'm losing so damn slow.
I'd rather not post my weight...but my goal weight is between 130 and 135.
According to health sites my "ideal" weight is 122 - that is NEVER going to happen ..I can't even imagine how gross I'd look....
I was 132 before I gained and I looked fantastic. I was firm and fit and felt great - I want to get back there.

You mean the Master Cleanse drink?
How did you feel? 22 days is a long time. I like the taste pretty well. I've found it hard to fast previously, though, I'm really going to bear down this time. They say after the second day you feel better.

Yup, the good old Master Cleanser. I got teased so mercilessly for doing it, mainly because it sounds so gross/ridiculous. The worst part for me at the beginning was the headaches- I think they might have been caffeine headaches, but I'm not sure. I had a constant headache and was lightheaded for the first five days or so, but after that was fine.
I felt great after it. I started it after I quit drinking due to liver problems. (Go hep go!) My body was in a really terrible place and I felt really great after the M.C.

Oh, that's great! Glad to know another person got good results. Wow, five days, you must have been pretty toxic. ;) :p JK, of course.

I don't know how it works in terms of storing fat or changing matabolism. Just saying that as the fast goes on, my hunger goes away.

I thought so too, but if you research fasting, you'll see the benefits are numerous and important. Fasting helps you eat more healthfully after you finish fasting, too. besides, most people eat way, way too much, it never gives your body a chance to rest and replenish its cells. To heal, itself, if you will, and flush toxins.

Hayley - did you do the sea salt flush as well? I know you don't have to do that with it, but it helps cleanse the colon. Oh, also, Hayley - did you ease back into a regular but more healthful diet in the manner that they recommend? You know, slowly?

Here's a snippet from one site:
"Detoxifying literally means removing poisons from your body. Once these poisons are gone, you will feel energetic, vital, happy and healthy. It is the poisons that make us feel tired, mentally confused, irritable, unhappy, depressed and ill. Consequently you should look forward to detoxification.
Unfortunately, when the toxins are mobilized, they will bring about those unpleasant feelings and tempt you to quit the cleanse before you are through. So, you need to understand the symptoms of detoxification and ensure that you drink your laxative tea and salt water to stimulate elimination of those toxins.
My experience with the cleanse and with various people doing it has taught me that whatever symptom I experienced one day, it would be gone the next morning with my bowel movements. It is nevertheless helpful to know when you are detoxifying because it helps you to get through that symptom to know it will be gone tomorrow.
I have grouped the detox symptoms I and others have had into five groups:
Cravings — I have only known one or two people to be hungry on this cleanse. Drinking more lemonade or water handles that. I have, however, observed that people on the cleanse crave what they are detoxifying. Proof that this is true is that the cravings usually go away the next morning with bowel movements. You can crave anything when detoxifying, but most likely you will experience cravings for the most toxic foods, such as pizza, hamburgers, barbeque ribs, etc.
Tiredness — When your body fights toxins, whether from detoxifying or an infection, it diverts energy into healing and away from the energy you use to work and play. On my first 20 day cleanse, I was not tired except on the fifteenth day. The next morning, I experienced heat in my bowel movements, an indication that acidic toxins were being eliminated. I also lost all sense of tiredness.
Irritability — This includes the desire to "just chew something solid."
Physical aches, pains, nausea, vomiting, etc. — These are the most severe reactions and only occur where a person is severely toxic, only a small percentage of people experience these. Fortunately, these have gone away after only a day or two in every case I have heard about.
Hot bowel movements — Your body wastes are acidic and when you eliminate the most toxic ones, they actually feel anywhere from warm to burning. This experience is very infrequent, but worth mentioning because hot bowel movements after a day of heavy detox symptoms will confirm that you just eliminated significant toxins.
A Special Note on Headaches
In talking to people doing the cleanse, I've learned that people with caffeine addiction (coffee, soft drinks, etc.) may experience headaches for the first 2 to 4 days.
Final Note
I hope you will have the same wonderful increase in mental clarity, health, energy and positive mental attitude that I and others have found.
If you have been a meat eater and/or milk products consumer, shift to cooked vegetable soup on the afternoon of the second day and a salad for dinner. Keep the lemonade drink as your breakfast drink after that. Of course, you would do better with the least amount of meat and no milk products as they are very productive of mucus and hinder digestion and absorption of nutrients."

About a year ago I worked out about 3 x per week (sometimes more) and started weight watchers and I lost nothing. So I say "Screw it". My clothes didn't fit any different and I felt no different. I've basically decided that I'm never going to be miss america material so I don't really care. I am looking into getting a stationary bike, though, just to keep somewhat active. I tried the belly dancing routine and stopped after the second attempt. I had my little "belly dancing" outfit and everything. Oh well.
Good luck to those that are doing it though!!

I know that story all too well - I joined WW and have been exercising - last week I did 6 days!!! LOST NOTHING
I'm so annoyed and I feel like I'm being gyped outta my money because I'm not seeing any results....ok I AM but just really really really slowly.
I'm completely frustrated by it - but I refuse to give up because I don't want to go on feeling fat and lazy. Sigh.

well..the only good thing about losing it slow is...I guess it's harder to put back on. Or at least that is what I've heard.
Oh..I lost about 20 lbs back in the winter last year. Actually more like 25. But it wasn't good. It was all stress and so forth. I was down to size 4 or a 6 (yah!!) hahaha..but I gained it all back, and then some. I really don't care at this point. Yeah, I'd like to be all skinny, and hot. But it's not worth it for me. I like food too much!!!

I will never be what society considers "skinny" But I don't really like skinny -so I'm fine with that.
I know losing slowly is better than losing way fast - and losing by unhealthy means. So that thoughts keeps me from completely throwing in the towel.
That and just two years ago I looked fab...and felt fab..and now I just don't. But I'm gettin' there :D

I love what you said though about at the end of the day no one's going to love you more for being 20 lbs lighter. I guess it's about balance.
Regarding cleansing, schedule a colonoscopy and take the sodium laxative. That'll take care of you right away! No 30 days necessary! OR, have about 6 -7 draught beers.

Also remember that there are 3 basic body types:
Ectomorph - the "naturally skinny" type like Gwyneth Paltrow who are very slender.
Mesomorph - the muscular type who find it easier to gain muscle mass like Madonna.
Endomorph - the type with a tendency to store body fat like J. Lo.
Most people that have a really hard time with weight loss are endomorphs and are literally hard-wired to store body fat. So ease up on yourselves, man! Or woman! And don't compare yourself to those other types (the bastards).

I'm thinking I'm the last one. I really am trying harder to like myself for who I am - and not compare myself to others...something I do way way too much of.
I like the way of thinking you bring up, of just living a lifestyle that makes you feel good - hopefully the benefits will follow.
changing one's mindset seems to be one of the more difficult things in life- it sure is for me! And I don't know when I started being so damn hard on myself - but it really needs to stop. I'm working on it :D

Well, isn't that the reason alot of people lose weight? The DREAM of....THAT's what's holding them back. Most of the time, it just ain't so. To quote Popeye, and the spoiled brat, "I am what I am.......ak, ak, ak, ak, ak.....".
Once you've gotten skinny, and re-evalutate your, now skinny life, you realize that nothing's really changed(cept you probably get laid more=BIG FN DEAL).

Except skinny people are always cold! My aunt lost a bunch of weight on an 800 calorie a day diet. And yes she gained it all back. She seemed to have a hell of a time while she was skinny but she counted every single calorie. Then other priorities came into play like her daughter and fiance. I knew she would gain it back though because you can't lose that much weight that fast without resorting to old habits eventually. She lost 30 lbs in 2 mos I think. Maybe 3 mos.

It's going okay. Not eating is hard, not partaking in scooby snacks is hard. I stare at people's food with longing, and dream of delicious sandwiches and burgers. hahaha. That should pass somewhat, soon. And actually I dreamed of Stevie last night, not food.
Since the human body can't lose that much fat that fast, some of it is something else. They say it's "water weight" that you lose, but I don't understand how I lose "water weight" if I'm drinking so much water. I used to know more about that, but I forgot the specifics so I'll have to re-google it. I think you can only really lose, like, around 3 lbs of fat in a week. I just did the math, and say my body needs 1700 calories to maintain its weight, and I only have 4-500 a day, the math says that I will be at a 3500 calorie deficit (1lb of fat) in 2-3 days, which is about 2-3 lbs a week. Omigod, I was just researching, and came across this. I was laughing sooooo hard. Bout time someone said it like this.
"A popular question that I hear is about how to stop giving in to food cravings. How to stop eating your favorite junk food. Maybe it’s chocolate or ice-cream or candy of some kind, or maybe it’s cookies and cake, or potato chips or fast food, or something you just love to eat, but need to stop eating because it is junk food. Whether you are trying to lose weight or gain weight, no matter what your goals are, everyone likes some kind of junk food and needs to stop eating it now. But, some people just can't stop. They just can't "get rid of the cravings" for these foods, and just can't stop giving in to their food cravings.
Before I go any further, let me be honest. I am going to get mean in this article. I am sure I will offend a whole bunch of people. My goal of this article is to get my point of view across, a point of view that I feel very strongly about, and I am sure a lot of people will disagree with it, but oh well. I want to get my point of view across in the exact way that I have it in my head, so I will NOT sweeten it up so that I don't hurt people's feelings or make them angry with me. I want to get my point across in such a way that it motivates everyone reading this article. So, if you have a problem with that, stop reading. If you don't, then here goes...
SHUT UP!!!! Who the hell are you to whine to me? Shut up already!! Sure, I can completely understand if your problems with getting the results you want are from the wrong information about your workout or diet. I've been there before. I used to do the wrong stuff. But after I finally learned the right stuff, I made this website so others don't have that problem. I want to save you time, money and effort by giving you free truthful information about how to get the results you want. But, this isn't about your diet or workout. This isn't about you wasting money on some useless ab workout product or stupid weight loss product or other useless supplements and gimmicks that weren't working for you. This is about food cravings. Don't whine to me. I've heard it before...
"It's so hard, I'm around this type of food all the time, the cravings just won't go away, I have a sweet tooth, I just have to give in to the cravings."
Stop it, you're boring me.
Don't give me your little stories. Like how you are around this type of food all the time. Do you think you are the only one, buddy? Everyone I know and am related to eats junk food all day long. This crappy food is everywhere I look. I am no different than you, except, I don't give in. Do I have super human powers? No. Do I not give in because my arms are bigger than yours? No. Do I not give in because I can bench press more than you? No. Do I not give in because my body fat is lower than yours? No. Do I not give in because I am physically better or physically stronger than you? No. I don't give in because I am mentally stronger than you. That's all it is really, mental. And for you to give in and me not to give in, we can only assume that I am mentally stronger than you. How does that make you feel? I don't know a damn thing about you, but I know that mentally, I can do something that you cannot. It sure makes me feel good though. That fact motivates me even more. So, thanks for being so mentally weak. It will make me work that much harder during my next workout. Thanks a lot. [   ]
Sorry, did I hurt your feelings yet? I didn't mean to, I'm just stating the truth. It's not my fault if the truth hurts. You understand now that this is all mental, right? You understand that it's all a matter of mental strength and will power, don’t you? Good. Here's what you do. Next time your little food cravings start coming out, think about this. Look at the food and think, "What do I want more… the 5 seconds of enjoyment that I will have while I chew this food, or the enjoyment of the fact that 24 hours of everyday, 7 days of every week, I will have the body that I want to have." That is what it comes down to really, and let me tell you... no food tastes as good as that feeling feels.
And you other people, you bull****ters. The ones that give me that idiotic speech about how "every food is ok if eaten in moderation." And how "no one should deny themselves anything." These are the same people who probably believe in having "Cheat days." Cheat days are the 1 day of the week where some people allow themselves to cheat a little from their diet and give into their food cravings, in moderation of course, kind of like a reward for the good work they did all week. Ya know what... BULL****! The hell with you and your cheat days. Your reward for sticking to your diet all week is 1 day of cheating? What kind of complete crap is this? Your reward for sticking to your diet all week is RESULTS! Remember them? They’re the reason that you are on this diet and working out in the first place. To get results!!! Not to have a cheat day at the end of the week. [ dying. I'm dying.]
Every food is ok as long as it's eaten in moderation. One candy bar won't hurt. One cookie won't hurt. One piece of junk food won't hurt. Oh, is that so? Will it help? No, it will not help. It is doing nothing good for you in any way possible. Therefore, it serves no purpose. You are giving into your cravings for 5 seconds of chewing enjoyment, and nothing more.
If anything, it does more bad than good. Do you know what giving into your food cravings "in moderation" does to most people? It makes them feel guilty. It makes them crave that food even more. It keeps the cravings alive and strong. Stop giving in to your cravings and the cravings will go away. Simple as that. [That's true].
What are you thinking now? Who am I? Like I never cheat or give into my cravings a little? NO! I don't! Not at all, not a little, not in moderation, not anything. The thought of eating some type of junk food doesn't even enter my mind anymore. I don't need those 5 seconds. I am stronger than that. Call it will power, or call it mental strength. My goal is to get results. My road to getting those results doesn't have to have 5 seconds of chewing pleasure. I eat for purpose, not pleasure. Food is not a hobby. Food is something your body needs to survive, and in the case of working out and getting results, food is something your body needs so that you can get those results. Food is nothing more than that. So, I give my body only what it needs to make these results happen. Does my body need the 5 seconds it takes for me to chew a piece of chocolate? No. Does my mind need it? NO! My mind is way too strong to need it, and that feels much better than any piece of chocolate would ever taste, and I love knowing that.
Like I said, I eat for purpose, not pleasure. That statement sums up everything that I think about "cheat days" and "food cravings" and "everything is ok if it's eaten in moderation." So don't whine to me about how hard it is for you. Do you think I will feel bad for you? I won't. You are not special. It is exactly as hard for you as it is for me and EVERYONE else. What's the difference? I have what it takes mentally. Ya know what else? You have it too. You just need to learn to use it. And, hopefully… this article has helped bring it out."
*wipes tears*. It so warms my grinchy little heart when people tell other people to quit whining about something that is totally avoidable.

Yawn, someone who makes excuses continually. Actually, he is someone who understands it very, very well. I would venture to say it is you who truly does not understand it. Either eat it or don't, but quit whining about it, is my favorite part.

 WOW I had no idea it was so easy. Gosh...I'm all better now - no more food or other issues!
Seriously though - that's really not fair, everyone struggles differently - and voicing those struggles is not "whining"
Of course that's all a matter of opinion - but personally I don't mind the "whining" of those of us on the board who are struggling with very real food issues.
On edit - he is right - it IS mental...that's the whole thing.... It's not a bad article or blog or whatever - but I stand by the fact that this person has probably never had a real issue with food.
Do I KNOW that certain foods are bad for me? Yes. Do I know what I need to eat/ not eat to be healthy and not a fattie? Yes.
Is it as easy as just saying...oh ok I won't eat the cake. Not always. It's different for everyone....

everyone has issues with food. You're not special. Just because you call it "issues" or "battles" doesn't mean it's different than how any one else feels. But you can continue to give away all of your power to food, if you want.
I just think it's lame, and you're boring me. I've been hearing about it for...2 years? From you? The exact same gripe? Exactly the same? And seemingly, you're just getting bigger. I don't care about you getting bigger, I just care that you "talk" about it incessantly in the same exact way without ever doing anything. God, I just hope you lose the fricking weight with Weight Watchers, and learn how to eat healthfully for life, and I don't have to hear about how hard losing weight is, and how hard eating right is, and how you have special "circumstances" and "food issues" and "problems" or whatever. And every time you pass up a donut, and how hard it was. And how you could never stop eating this or that or the other that would make a difference, you'd rather not stop, and keep complaining, seemingly. It's like you revel in having these problems, instead of taking steps to solve them, despite repeated support, advice, and information.
I eat hamburgers and chips and candy and whatever - difference is, when I do, I don't wonder why I don't lose weight, or complain that it's all so impossible, and that I have "issues". Over and over and over. I just acknowlege that I like hamburgers, but they are bad for me, but I just ate one anyway. There doesn't have to be this big miasma surrounding it, a big "Woe is me, I, like the rest of the world, like hamburgers! Oh, forsooth, what shall I do??? *sob*"
I mean, Carrie weighed 200 lbs or something, but didn't talk about it all day, and whine. Then, she got some good advice about changing her diet, and exercising, and whatnot. And so she did it. And we get to hear about her success, and it's great. Simple as that. She doesn't talk all day every day about how hard it is, or how she didn't eat candy all week, and how she's so down on herself, blah blah blah blah for two years.
I'm sure many people will disagree with what I've said, and that's fine, I'm not those people, and this is how I feel. Obviously, I also wish you luck in your endeavours, wish you really wanting what you say you want, or if you don't want it enough, quit beating yourself up (and me, by proxy) about it.

Yeah, but, DOES Deanna talk about it every day? I don't really follow these weight loss threads, even though I'm in the middle of trying to lose weight myself, so I have no idea who posts about what. I think it'd made sense to post every day or so about one's progress and struggles and such... Even whining is okay, because there *are* some days where you think you're getting nowhere. That goes for trying to change any big situation in your life.
 I thought the article was kinda funny, actually.

Just by way of defending myself - I HAVE changed things  So this notion that I've been bitching and not doing anything = wrong.
Sorry if you don't like my "I didn't eat a donut" or "I didn't eat candy" this week - but those are very real parts of my struggle - which is what I thought the point of these threads was - so talk about your weight loss journey. So everyone else can do that, but when I do it's whining and sobbing??
And your time line is a bit skewed - maybe because my bitching is so painful it seems like two years - but really I just started this journey recently...
And I've never claimed that I am the only one with food issues...in fact I know there are many here who also struggle - and they've been right there with me discussing them. Your perception that I think I'm the only one with these problems and that I sit around feeling sorry for myself and sobbing is just wrong.
I'm eating right and dragging my ass to the gym every day to CHANGE these things. Beating myself up - trust me, I'm working on that one - but these things take time - and I come here to talk about these things because I have friends here who I discuss them with.
I'm not having conversations with myself around here - so I'm sorry you feel the way you do - but it's part of my life - which I discuss here  If you're so pained by what I say, I would suggest putting me on ignore for a while - or just not reading what i have to say (since it's all the same to you anyway).
I get that what you're saying is your perception - and I hear what you're saying, but because the things I talk about are very real parts of my everyday life I will most likely keep talking about some of them.
For me it IS a victory when I pass up a donut - hopefully that **** won't mean as much in the future when I get better at eating well and exercising.

I dunno. I always feel good about myself when I pass up something unhealthy that I would've eaten before. I don't post about it, but I don't think any less of someone who does. Unless, of course, you're like, "Hey, guys! Some guy tried to give me Twinkies and a box of Smarties, and I only ate ONE OF THE SMARTIES AND A CRUMB FROM THE TWINKIE!!!!!! YAY FOR NOT GIVING INTO TEMPTATION!!!!!!"

Well I do post about it - though not every day  I did when I passed up a donut once...because I had just started with the losing weight and I was very proud.
But, to me, that's the POINT of the chit chat forum of the Ledge...to share random crap. And in a thread for and about weight loss I see nothing wrong with anyone talking about what they're going through.

Ha well thank ya - since I'm not quite a serial thread killer -and manage to have many many conversations on here...I figure I'm still ok.
Of course I'm going to rub people the wrong way - I know of at least two people who seem to have issue with me - and conversely there are Ledgies I have issue with - but I don't generally broadcast it...if I have a big problem with someone I just utilize the ever-so-handy ignore feature..:D
But with so many personalities on here it's close to impossible to get along with everyone - and after my last "spat" with someone on here I was very heartened to find that even people who don't think anyone has problems with them....well it's not the case.
I'm sure almost everyone has a problem with one person or another...
That's life, but well I guess I kind of do have a problem with a proplem against me being broadcast -especially since I'm really not doing anything different than others.

 Omigod, I was just researching, and came across this. I was laughing sooooo hard. Bout time someone said it like this.
i think that's a great essay; i could've written it myself. i hate when people say that in order to have that attitude & be positive about weight loss, you can't have/understand food issues, because it devalues the hard work i have put into my weight loss. my efforts have not been without the occasional struggle or temptation - i work at a restaurant where 90% of what we serve is not healthy. but i would not consider this a battle at all. this is not because i don't understand food issues. you don't get to be 230 pounds at the age of 22 without using food as a crutch. but after over a decade of severe depression and self-hatred and sedentariness and isolation, i decided i was done. i stopped taking **** from myself and quit making excuses. i educated myself on how food works, and i started exercising.
i guess i don't view this as a battle because i don't see myself as working against anything. my life isn't driven by my taste buds and emotions anymore; i'm working with my body, with nature, with my mind. i have never in the last 10 years been so happy or proud. physical freedom brings me joy. joy! and i don't think i'm in any kind of minority for that ... i think that's universal. don't you feel great when you feel strong, powerful? when nothing has control over you? when you don't subordinate yourself to whims and emotions? when you take responsibility for your decisions?
as i said, it's not always struggle-free for me. this morning in particular, i would have loved to lie in bed, reading and watching what not to wear before work. but i knew i'd regret it later, so i told myself to stfu and get on my bike  . and i was right, i totally felt great all day. i mean, i'm not trying to be all, listen to how awesome i am! i just want to share my extremely positive experience, because i want everyone to have the same joy in their life that i do.
it's all about perception. you're not working against anything, you're working for your body, with your mind. you're chiseling away a false self, an ego that is doing nothing for you but insulate you from happiness, reality, and responsibility.

That is a good point - but it just takes some people longer to get there than others
I'm still not there at all. To me, it IS a daily struggle, even when I feel awesome after a good workout. It's the food that gets me, and continues to.
I know this will continue until I have a mind shift - a shift in my way of thinking, but that's not happening with diet and exercise alone - so I'm working outside of those things to understand where my attitudes on this issue comes from.
I never meant to take anything away from your journey by saying that some don't understand food issues - perhaps I should say then MY food issues aren't understood? I don't know - I do maintain that many people (I'm not saying you) don't understand very real food issues - they think it's made up or a sign of weakness, but it's a very real thing.
I don't know - but I do know that you're doing an ass-kicking and inspirational job with the whole thing -and attitude IS a big part of it....
We all get there at different times I guess.

Have you read 8 Weeks to Optimum Health yet? That one helped me alot. I always felt that I was punishing myself when eating healthy foods and rewarding myself when eating junk. But that book helped me shift my perception by tuning into how the food made me feel.
I wanted to mention that I think you feel bigger because you are developing body awareness. When not exercising you can just ignore your body but when you're using it you can't. Does that make sense?
I'm still at 151.5 lbs. Not bad but I would love to get down to 140. I just wish my breasts would stop shrinking at this point.

Have you read 8 Weeks to Optimum Health yet? That one helped me alot.
I just finished it. :)
I got up to 172 last year (I'm only 5'5"). In June, I was down to 160, but now I'm back up to 168. I've been walking 2 miles every day for the last two weeks, but can't seem to completely 86 the double quarter-pounder meals. What horrifies me even more than the amount of calories and fat I'm consuming, is the amount of money I'm spending on them. I spent $70 on fast food in the last month. I'm doing better though. I've only had them 4 times in the last two weeks (as opposed to pretty much every day). Still, I think my eating them is rendering my 2-mile walks useless.
Anyway, I liked Weil's book, although he's a little new agey for my taste, and some of his suggestions (like the steam baths) seemed a little over-the-top to me. I'm going to root through the pantry when we move and toss out all the stuff he suggests. I've been trying to eat more vegetables and fish (again), but I just cannot like soy products (tofu, burgers, etc.). I've tried telling myself they're delicious, but they're just not.

Amber - you're right. People who whine & bitch but continue to do the same thing over & over again need to either make a real change in their lives, or resign themselves to the fact that they'll never change and shut up about it. That article was great.
Deanna - you're right too. Some people have emotional issues & abnormal attachments to food, and many others don't. Those who don't have a hard time understanding that it's not always as simple as "just stop eating so much!" Well, it IS that simple, but it's much easier said than done.
I personally just like food that tastes good. :D And yes, a bacon cheeseburger DOES taste better than carrot sticks. It takes a major attitude adjustment to completely change the way you were raised to think about food. It's not always easy, but it's not impossible either.
As far as discussing it here on The Ledge ad nauseum, I figure if you want support, post away - but as usual be prepared for some people to disagree with you or make comments that you may not like. On the other hand, if you're sick of hearing about people struggling to lose weight, just don't read the 500 threads about it.

I just tried the fake buffalo wings and they are good. But they're fried so I'm not sure that is what he meant to eat.
Yeah, once you become aware of calories and fat food like that seems disgusting. You could always just reduce to the reg quarter pounder.
Weil is very new agey. Take what you like and leave the rest which it sounds like you've done. Any change is helpful! Especially if you were eating that crap every day. I guess the motivation to stay away from it will be feeling better.
I still have many changes to my diet I could make but I eat mostly well and for my last checkup my cholesterol was excellent, I have very high good cholesterol and low bad. So I am doing something right! I think it's the whole grains I eat and the exercise. Exercise is the fountain of youth.

Your comment on carrot sticks reminds me of something Rosie O'Donnel said once. She asked her doctor about her weight problem and for suggestions. Her doctor said, "Well, when you're hungry for a snack have some carrot sticks." Rosie was like, "Oh great, she totally solved America's problem with obesity right there. Why didn't I think of that?"
Personally I think this thread is for support and if you can't be supportive then use the golden rule.

Rosie is awesome....
And that rings so true....
And no, I've not picked up that book yet - I'm only getting paid once a month now - so I'm trying to adjust to that - and have a trip coming up next weekend - so that book is on my November "to buy" list....
I'm really looking forward to reading it, anything that can help me shift my way of thinking is welcome.
And though many on here think this is bogus and stupid I'm finding a LOT of strength and attitude shift through prayer - so it's not like I'm just sitting around complaining yet doing absolutely nothing about it
In fact - I JUST got back from the gym and am doing this while I cool off....I'm all red and sweaty...very attractive  :p

I loved that article. It's pretty funny. It's harsh and impatient, but I can't disagree with any of it.
To be honest, I think that the root of anyone's "food issues" can be very different. For some, it is as easy as making a decision, and no longer being self indulgent. I know that I have put on weight in the last year or so simply because I have been lazy and self indulgent. Too busy to go to the gym. Times of being depressed. Stressed out so I decide I will go ahead and eat pizza, or go out with friends and have 4 or 5 drinks. And I like tequila, so it's 400 calories a pop. I know exactly what I am doing. Then I go home and the next day bitch at myself because I have guttage. But it's my own fault.
That is way different than people who have a serious emotional problem with food. For whatever reason, there are people who use food for comfort. Who use it as a means to treat their own depression, anger, sadness and doubts. It's something that is learned at a very early age. Hell, it might even have a chemical component. For some, it may take a good shrink to help unravel how that thought process works. What I do is the same thing, just on a smaller scale.
I have a dear friend I have known for over thirty years. She's like my little sister. She has always been heavy. Since the crib ! She acknowledges she will never be skinny. She just doesn't have the body type. But about 18 months ago, she totally hit a wall. Her bad back was being exacerbated by her weight, and by her very large breasts. The doctor prescribed steroid shots to help her deal with the pain and the fact that her entire right leg was numb from a pinched nerve. For over a year. He told her it would help to take the weight off. That it might help to avoid surgery. So, in less than a year, she lost 85 pounds. Exercise and eating differently. While working about 70 hours a week. No drugs, no stomach surgery. She had the back surgery, and is soon getting her breasts reduced. She is wearing a pants size that she hasn't fit into since she was 12.
Is her story typical ? Hardly. But I never thought she would do this. She didn't either. She was used to eating whatever, whenever. And was okay with it. Now she's a total rock star and is happier than she has ever been. I should know, I have known her since she was 3 !
Anyway, a little success story.
I will weigh in tomorrow, and get on board with all of the rest of this.

Great post
And I love hearing stories like your friends - people really can be inspiring.
And I think I fit somewhere into the middle of just plain stupid behaviour (I know I'm guilty of that) and actual emotional food issues. The food issues I can even trace to my childhood - so since I can trace their origin they will be easier to discuss and overcome.
I never meant to imply that I am where I am simply because of food issues - in fact I think I've been rather honest about my past bad eating habits and how they got me to where I am today - but in addition to that it turned out that I did have emotional food issues as well....
It's all a mess - but I'm sorting it out - and the end result - I will also not be "skinny" but I'll look and feel fabulous - and that's where I'm trying to get...

It isn't about skinny, I think it's about feeling good and being satisfied. I never got the feeling you were all about food issues. Hey, we all sometimes just wanna eat stuff ! Damn if I don't sometimes buy a Bag of Doritos, some Stouffers french bread pizza, and a six pack just cause I wanna gorge myself. It tastes friggin great.
I know where I wanna be. And it isn't miles away. My goal isn't unrealistic. I weighed 150 when I was 18. And had a 28 inch waist. But was a skinny weakling. Now I am 40 and have muscles. I am never gonna go back in time. Don't want to. Just wanna get rid of the little gut. I have about 10-15 pounds to drop. And I will be totally fine. And will feel good. It won't be that hard. It's just gonna take about 6 weeks of concentration.

My problem lately is that I want results NOW!!! And that's completely unrealistic and dooms me to negative thinking like, "oh this isn't working..." "I'm working so hard...but nothing..." But it takes time - that's been my mantra the last two weeks - and it's working....slowly...painfully slowly but surely.
And yes, I'm going to still eat a burger or chips or candy once in a while - once in a while does not a diet undo...but I was previously eating that stuff ALL THE TIME. So moderation...and I am seeing results, and I'm losing at least and not gaining :D

I hate that ! It has derailed me before. I will work out and eat right for 2 weeks and lose like, 1 pound. Then get disgusted and think "F this ! I am going to go out to dinner and go drink with my buddies like it's 1999 !"
It's a slow haul. It's actually more dramatic when you have 30 or more pounds to lose. When it is less, the stuff just doesn't melt off as fast. I almost feel like the last five is just glued there like cancer or concrete patch.

Sorry if you don't like my "I didn't eat a donut" or "I didn't eat candy" this week - but those are very real parts of my struggle - which is what I thought the point of these threads was - so talk about your weight loss journey. So everyone else can do that, but when I do it's whining and sobbing??
Yes, Deanna, because you talk about it both more frequently, and in a self pitying manner. Those are real parts of all of our struggles, Deanna. We just don't talk about everything like it's so impossible, and everyone should feel sorry for us.
And your time line is a bit skewed - maybe because my bitching is so painful it seems like two years - but really I just started this journey recently...
Uh, no, you just started WW recently. This complaint goes way back. I remember a couple threads you started that were titled something like "okay, seriously" and then inside you said "It's time, really. I've never felt so big. I used to be in great shape, but I haven't been exercising." etc. First it was because something something it was so cold in Rochester, blah blah. Trust me, I wouldn't remember it like this if you hadn't been talking about it before. Of course you didn't talk about it when you stopped posting because someone hurt your feelings about religion.
And I've never claimed that I am the only one with food issues...in fact I know there are many here who also struggle - and they've been right there with me discussing them. Your perception that I think I'm the only one with these problems and that I sit around feeling sorry for myself and sobbing is just wrong.
Um, okay, well you write about it like you are feeling sorry for yourself. Exercising is so hard, not eating crap is so hard, I feel so bad because I'm not losing weight, on and on. I have "issues", I can't "help it" - tell me that isn't language that sounds like feeling sorry for yourself, and I'll tell you you don't understand language very well.
get that what you're saying is your perception - and I hear what you're saying, but because the things I talk about are very real parts of my everyday life I will most likely keep talking about some of them.
For me it IS a victory when I pass up a donut - hopefully that **** won't mean as much in the future when I get better at eating well and exercising.
Yeah, it's part of all our lives, Deanna. It's hard for all of us not to eat the donut. IN fact, I pass two donut shops, a McDonald's, and a Jack in the Box on my way to and from work. And I don't even have to get out of my car to get those things, I just have to put the kickstand down on my bike. Do we start threads about it? Do we ask for praise because we passed a donut? Do we talk about passing a donut like it's the second coming? You do, and that is a bad attitude to have about food, for yourself. It's also irritating to those of us who do way, way, more difficult things all the time, and who gain weight at least as easily, if not more easily than you. At least it is to me.
And yeah, I'm willing to bet you talk about it every day, either in the weight loss thread, or in the "what am I eating" thread.
Personally I think this thread is for support and if you can't be supportive then use the golden rule.
Actually, Suze, this thread was started as a weight loss contest thread. And you can be as supportive as you want, but I'm all "Golden Ruled" out with this poster on this subject. It's nice if you are a bottomless pit of support, and if you don't mind that someone repeatedly doesn't take the advice for the very thing that they continue to complain about, and ask for support about. Bless your heart and all that.
That is way different than people who have a serious emotional problem with food. For whatever reason, there are people who use food for comfort. Who use it as a means to treat their own depression, anger, sadness and doubts. It's something that is learned at a very early age.
Yeah, Sparky - I assumed that was all of us. Carrie said it was her, that's why I use food as well, probably Suze does, too, maybe Jaz, and I don't know about Paula. That's my whole point. I have food issues, we all do, but we aren't complaining about it the same way, or not changing our habits, or talking about how hard everything is all the time. I've had to watch my weight since 8th grade, despite playing 3-4 sports per year, and into adulthood I had to work out 1-2 hours 5-6 days a week to keep my bod where I wanted it. Not to mention riding bike and walking everywhere. And I, and people here heavier than me, can all exercise, and do so. I've smoked for 10 years, and smoked on top of that for 6, and my legs and knees have hurt almost every day for the past 2 years, but I still exercise, and for more than 15 minutes at a time. Plus I ride my bike or walk or roll everywhere. And it's been a huge struggle all this time to lose my damn pregnancy weight.
I have to sacrifice, I have to do things I don't feel like doing. And the same with everyone here. But we don't talk about how hard everything is, or make excuses.
It's galling to me that everyone works very hard at the same thing, and does much more than Deanna is willing to do, yet she's the one with the complaints. Don't complain so much if you aren't willing to do the work. And don't complain so much about how hard the work is, because we all know, and are doing the work. Doing it with very little complaining, or talking about the massive difficulty of it.
And, instead of posting about it all the time, maybe you should spend that time doing butt squeezes in your chair, or looking up HELPFUL NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION online, like I do. That's the thing, there are answers out there - answers people have told you, answers that are also readily available to you - but you don't want to do the work. All this advice and support, and seemingly it does you no good. Your self pitying attitude about it (which you say you don't have, but your words say otherwise) is most detrimiental to you, regardless of how much it irritates me.
When I am having trouble, I go online to find solutions, I don't think about how hard everything is.
When I wanted to be healthier and go vegan, do you think that was easy? NO! But if you want something, you have to do something for it. I used to take my coffee with cream and sugar - but when I found out refined sugar is like poison to the body, and milk/cheese is like pouring cement into your intestines...I started having my coffee plain. Did I die? no. Did I feel deprived? For one second. Did I realize that to be healthier I had to make a small sacrifice? yes! Did I for one second think in my mind that just because I had done a certain thing before, that I could not do something different now? Did I put that constraint on myself? NO. Did I say to myself "oh, I can't possibly continue to exist without milk, sugar, hamburgers, and cheese!" No, because that is ridiculous, and you don't get results if you don't work, and aren't willing to change your mind.
I mean, Strand lost 5000 pounds or something, but he wasn't on here all the time trying to get support, or saying how hard everything was, or how he couldn't possibly stop eating this or that. Same with Carrie.
The way you talk about your struggle, to me, is akin to someone visiting a starving african village and complaining that they don't have butter sauce for their lobster, and being really sad about it, and saying that their life is hard because they don't have butter for their lobster, and expecting the Africans to be supportive about the fact that you don't have butter.
I know this sounds mean. Maybe I should start a thread about how I have to speak my mind, how I can't help it, how I was hardwired to do so and how I can't change. Maybe if I have a time where I don't speak my mind, I should start a thread "I Passed Up Speaking My Mind Today". Then maybe it could be called an "issue" I have, and I could get some sympathetic "support" for it, thus absolving me of some of the responsibility, while gaining the energy and sympathy of others. Then when I did it again, I could say "oh, I know I did it again, but it's so hard! It's so hard!"
Obviously, I'm being facetious, I would never start that thread. Nor would I disclaim responsibility for what I say.
Good Luck, Deanna

I checked all these crazy ideal weight sites. Evidently, my ideal weight is around at 5'9" is 160-165. But, I have pretty muscular legs and have gotten some more shoulder and back muscle lately. So I am saying 163. A couple of years ago, I remember tipping in at 159 a few times, which shocked me. I know what I should look like, and how my clothes should fit, so it's no mystery.
Ran off and swam 1000 meters yesterday at lunch. Wimp swim. I usually do 1800. But today I am gonna do the 1800 and then bike tonight.
Here goes ! Here goes hopefully ten pounds of sloppy fat. :blob1:

 OMG that's funny. But not.
I don't pay attention to those "ideal weight" things on websites- they're typically unrealistic - my doctor agreed - and the ideal weight I'm working toward is actually 5-10 pounds more than the "ideal weight"
And actually the muscle thing was what was doing me in last time - if I want to have any muscle at all I cannot weight the website "ideal weight" so...that's not a compromise I'm willing to make....
Good luck on your goal....!!! I think you can totally do it!
Too bad NPR doesn't have an exercise show ;)

Interesting is one thing. Down right rude is another.

 Funny to read. But so not funny when it's staring back at you !

They don't seem to take muscle into account. So I adjusted it too.

Thanks !
I can just imagine some esoteric exercise thing on there. That would be a hoot. It would have to be some new agey thing.

Hmm...maybe that's where my future in public radio lies...."welcome to eliptical heaven, I'm Deanna Garcia...and I'm Christie Brinkley. Coming up, a new exercise technique you can do in your sleep...and donuts that burn fat? Thost stories coming up after the news...."
Eh ok...I'm not so good on the creative front :p
Yeah - the postage for the book was $3.49  But I'm more than willing to pay $4.29 for the book...that's more than I'm willing to pay for Street Angel ;)
