seriously. I am so PO'd...I'm sick to death of the job I have. god. and I hate feeling this way. so today is boss' day, right? and I work for 3 attorneys. no one mentioned anything about doing a gift from the team or anything and I was kind of like, ok, well, guess we won't do one. but this morning I was feeling gracious and thought we should at least do a little something. so, I email everyone and say if you want to contribute to a gift card to a little cafe downstairs, let me know by 10. so, 10 comes and goes, and get a couple of dollars from folks. I go down, get cards for all 3 and gift certificates for 2 (the other one has an assigned paralegal and I thought it was really her role to get a "gift") - anyway, I get back and the senior paralegal has responded and said the main boss is a stickler for firm policy of "no gifts" - now, what does that mean? and why is she just now responding? and then she says, but I'll contribute if the group does. wtf? does that mean? so, I just gave them all the cards and kept the gift cert. for now. I mean, I'd look like a dumbass. this is just the latest in a line of things that piss me off here. what's a bitch to do? I'm so over it. I need to find something else, seriously. and not to mention that everything they told me in my interview to get me here was a lie. I left a job I had been at for 4 years with senior classification...come and go as I please, preapproved overtime and working for the big partner. they lied to get me here and now I'm screwed.

anyway, thanks for letting me vent.

That sucks, Jason. Life is miserable if you're miserable at work. You've got a lot of paralegal experience, so hopefully you could find another job if you wanted. Or, if you're looking to get out of the legal field, it might be a good time to think about starting a new career. I hope everything works out for the best. :xoxo:

THOSE BASTARDS! I am finding with quite a few friends that seems to be the a standard business practice - lie to get them in the door. If that were ever a situation for me, I would get everything in writing before hand. I hate office politics...so I feel for you. Chitty how they handled the whole boss-day bit. Good for you in wanting to make an effort though...that shows kindness in the face of jerks. sorry that happened jazzy.

I can't believe there is such a thing as "Boss Day".

Jazmen, the important thing is that you did the nice and gracious thing. Why not start shopping your resume; I'm sure someone will jump to get a smart and talented person like you.

exactly. I think I do want to do something outside the law firm world. I'm sick of it and I can't see myself at 50 doing this. I do have one lead, but I'd have to move and I don't know if I can swing that right now, but we'll see.

I volunteered to make the cakes for the monthly birthday celebration (feeding about 150 folks) and I seriously thought about dropping in a little weed. but alas, I can't do it. see, I'm even baking for these bitches. argh!

I know. I should've gotten it in writing cause now overtime is "discouraged" and the traveling they went on and on about ain't happening either.

it's a joke, right? to have Boss' Day, I know. I did what I thought I'd want someone to do for me (that's the way I usually approach anything). I'm gonna start looking around. hell, I may end up on a street corner before it's all said and done just to get out!

They lied to you so do whatever the f* you want. Hell, keep the gift cert and if anyone asks you about it say, "What gift certificate?" Or, write "Happy boss day to the most honest (crossed out) boss in the world." on the card. I hate bad bosses and unfortunately there are plenty to go around.

Sorry about all of the ****, Jason. Is this the job you were thinking about taking a while back? I remember there being a thread or something... Anyway, don't get too discouraged, perhaps things will lighten up soon. you haven't been there that long have you?

I remmember when you were struggling about whether or not to take this job. I'm sorry it has turned out to be not a happy situation for you, Jason. To think that you were just doing something sweet and you got kicked in the teeth for it...

Anyway, it probably would be best for you to at least start keeping your eye out for other possibilities right now. You have so much going for you.

I really hate going through work stress. It all works out in the end, but it's so hard to see that when you're in the thick of it. Keep your head up, babe. It'll get better eventually.

Been there, done that. Just remember that it's always good to try to better yourself, that's what you were doing right? Just because this situation didn't work out, it doesn't mean you made a mistake, you tried it and realized it didn't work for you, chalk it up to a learning experience. Just don't be afraid to continue to take risks, sometimes they pay off!

there are two things in life that are certain: death and taxes.

add a third: office politics.

they exist everywhere - and always suck. i fear that even if you were to leave your job, jason, you'd find some similar crap at the next one.

my one question to you is... what did your bosses say when you gave them the cards? were they gracious and appreciative? what you did was classy and kind. your colleagues probably just felt bad that they didn't think of it - so they tried to discourage you. just keep that in mind, and feel sorry for the poor, heartless sods you work with. :xoxo:

Yeah, never stop being kind. It is the better way to be even though it is harder. But if it's in your nature you can't even help it. I've often wished I could be more of a jerk because my life would be easier. But would it really? I don't think so.

you're right and I know that. still just pisses me off that I didn't have to deal with the office politics at my last firm because I was so high up. I mean, I was as respected as some attorneys (not tootin' my horn, just sayin') and here I am in the thick of it.

the attys were very gracious and appreciative. I ended up giving them the gift cards anyway. no one made a stink and I realized, like y'all said, the others are just pissed it wasn't their idea.
