NEW YORK (CNN) -- An aircraft has crashed into the middle of a brick luxury high-rise residential building on Manhattan's Upper East Side at 72nd Street and York Avenue, police officials said.

The building is very close to the East River. There was no word on casualties as firefighters battled the flames that shot up from several windows in the middle of the building. The Federal Aviation Administration has said a "general aviation" aircraft had hit the building.

A North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) spokesperson, which monitors air traffic, told CNN that it had not been tracking the aircraft.

Witness Sarah Steiner told CNN that fires were burning on the ground. "It looks like the plane just flew into someone's living room there."

"It looks as if the aircraft didn't go into the building but fell down," she said. "It may be part of the debris burning on the ground."

Steiner said that when she arrived, she saw fire shooting out of two windows on the 30th floor of the 50-story building.

Video from the scene shows at least three apartments in the high-rise fully engulfed in flames.

Ok, so anyone hear what size the plane was?

according to the article on the cnn website, the plane is a "general aviation" fixed-wing aircraft -- the article also calls the plane "small." the front page of yahoo is now reporting that police say two people are dead.

i just don't understand how it was completely off the radar for an accident like this to occur. given the past, you'd think they'd be extra cautious -- especially regarding planes that are being piloted using visual landmarks. strange and very sad to say the least.

if you're not familiar with the building, this (http://i.a.cnn.net/cnn/2006/US/10/11/plane.crash/newt1.irpt.keller.jpg) gives you a good idea of the location.

Cory Lidle was the pilot??? That is what the news is saying at this time.

Man, this is kinda eerily similar to another Yanks player's death in a plane accident: Thurman Munson

any private pilots here? I have flown in/out of palm springs as a passenger on many occassions and I have to say the lack of security at these smaller airports is frightening...any one really can board a plane.

It was Cory Lidle on the plane with a flight instructor, I believe. They haven't been able to officially announce his death because his family is on another flight & don't know that he's been killed. As soon as they are able to contact his family, it will be announced.

As a long-time Red Sox fan, my thoughts, prayers, and sympathies go out to the Lidle family.
I know what it is to lose a family member to a senseless tragedy. :distress:
Word on the local news is that he was on his way here, to Nashville.

Peace.

Another thing that really offended me was that the information got out before his wife could be notified. I know she was on a plane going to California, but I dont care. That was in VERY poor taste.

Sorry to be morbid, but all I can think about when I see this is that this wouldn't have happened if the Yankees had won. :sorry: :p

I would guess that crossed the mind of any baseball fan.
Admittingly, I thought the same thing and wouldn't doubt even his family did.
It's not morbid.... just one of those things.

That was in VERY poor taste. Would you agree that it would be difficult info to supress? Emergency Operations would have to trace the plane's origin, ownership, tailnumber, pilot, passengers, etc. and that info is no secret. I can not help to wonder if situations arose that left no option. Had someone made the attempt to reach her (do we know?) she would have been as you say, on the plane. If they were unable to reach another member of the family (did they try?) how long could the info have been withheld...someone would have it. Ultimately someone made the decision. How would you have handled it David?
