And I've never heard anyone in SF call South of Market "SOMA", either. Your point being? :)

"Frisco" will definitely bring out the worst in people - I warn people all the time!

In the 16 years I lived in the City, I never heard anyone local call it "Frisco" (without a reprimand,) but you know, the Beat poets sometimes did call it by that name. Jack Kerouac, a sometimes resident (and SF likes to claim him as one) called it "Frisco" all the time, and it shows up in Ginsburg poems.
Herb Caen, the clumnist had a book called Don't Call It Frisco and I think he pointed out that tourists and newcomers were more likely to use that name, than locals. It's a class thing, "Frisco" was used by sailors and dockworkers, and I think that is why the Beats picked it up.
Don't call Divisadero by its full name, either, call it "Divis", and you will sound local, if you care to.
Here is something from Kerouac's Lonesome Traveler
But it was that beautiful cut of clouds I could always see above the little S.P. alley, puffs floating by from Oakland or the Gate of Marin to the north or San Jose south, the clarity of Cal to break your heart. It was the fantastic drowse and drum of hum of lum mum afternoon nathin' to do, ole Frisco with end of land sadness -- the people -- the alley full of trucks and cars of business nearabouts and nobody knew or far from cared who I was all my like three thousand five hundred miles from birth-O opened up and at last belonged to me in Great America.
Now it's night in Third Street the keen little neons and also yellow bulblights of impossible-to-believe flops with dark ruined shadows moving back of torn yellow shades like a degenerate China with no money -- the cats in Annie's Alley, the flop comes on, moans, rolls, the street is loaded with darkness. Blue sky above with stars hanging high over old hotel roofs and blowers of hotels moaning out dusts of interior, the grime inside the word in mouths falling out tooth by tooth, the reading rooms tick tock bigclock with creak chair and slantboards and old faces looking up over rimless spectacles bought in some West Virginia or Florida or Liverpool England pawnshop long before I was born and across rains they've come to the end of the land sadness
end of the world gladness all your San Franciscos will have to fall eventually and burn again.

I thought I'd give this thread a bump, since the show's now just over a week away.
Your opinions of my terminology aside, anybody else going to the SF show on 11/6?

I can't wait to meet more Ledgies here! SN and non-SN alike =0p (MISS VICKIE!!!!! :xoxo: ) Will be there w/ bells on, as LB is the mostest!!!! Hub says Union & Chestnut are the closest cool locales w/ bars etc to the POFA. Maybe a REAL local (i'm just so far out of the SF loop) can suggest a place on Union prior. Others coming from out of town, MUST spend some time near the POFA, and those staying ANY longer must be children the following day and go to the Exploritorium. haha. I LOVE that place. Otherwise, that area around the theatre is just so gorgeous, you'll have fun just wandering. Out of towners and locals alike. :blob1:

It's unlikely I will go as my concert budget is completely depleted for the year.
For those of you looking for dinner ideas, may I recommend the Baker Street Bistro. It is just a few blocks from the venue and an excellent French bistro. It might be pricier than you're looking for, but I highly recommend it if you're looking for a nice meal. However, you should make a reservation. We learned this the hard way before seeing Cyndi Lauper and the only table we could get was outside on a very chilly night.
Here's the website with menu: http://bakerstbistro.citysearch.com/page/o3zm/Home_Page.html
Chestnut Street would be the next closest to the venue and has a lot of restaurants and bars, as does Union Street. I'm not very familiar with either street so I can't give a lot of recommendations. Perry's on Union Street is a San Francisco institution, and where Brian from Tales of the City was a waiter.

I just wrote a big long thing but it got erased.
The show was spectacular, you know?
The crowd was small after the show waiting for Linds, so we got signatures, and he chatted a bit, and it was cool. He kind of had a deer in the headlights look, so after I got my sig I just stepped back and watched, even though I wanted a picture. But he was really nice to everyone. Then he saw someone from his highschool or something and they chatted for a bit.
I know most of you have seen the show, so...
Personal Highlights:
When Lindsey came out onstage and laughed and said "Well, thank you for not going to the Rolling Stones show tonight!" (yes, they were playing)
Red Rover - I adore the new percussion on this. They took out the more high end, strident aspects of the song, and now there are just nice deep oddly synchopated drums, and a much warmer, lower sound over all. Magnifique!
It Was You: I liked it much better then the album version. It sounded more tuneful live. And Linds injected more passion, it wasn't quite as clinical sounding.
World Turning: Again, love the new percussion. This song is always a favorite anyway, but it snap crackled and popped last night. Pow!
Trouble: The way he's doing this song is incredibly beautiful to me. Very soulful. Cried from the beauty.
Castaway Dreams: I love this song anyway, but seeing him sing it brings even more...emotional depth to the song. Cried, those lyrics really get me.
Show You How: This song is mesmerizing to watch/listen to. The syncopation of the vocal parts is lovely, and strange, and very even. Just a trip, a sonic trip to an alternate universe. heh. This is another that was warmer live, the vocal edges were softened and blended, in fact all edges were just a bit. But just the right amount. All the momentum and fire was still there.
SMAP was a bit slow and pretty for my tastes, but it isn't a favorite of mine, and it was still awesome anyway.
The whole show was incredible. Flawless.
After SMAP we hightailed it to the stage door. I finally made Christy, have a workout, we were the first ones there due to my maneuvering and near sprinting. I call it the "Running Slolem".
Anywho, Brett came out first to smoke and chat. I love Brett. He asked my name, we joked and chatted/flirted for a minute, then he chatted with others for awhile, there were only a handful of other people besides us around the stage door at that point. Then he stepped back over to us and asked Deborah and Christy what there names were, then he gets to me and looks up and is all "aaaaaannnnnd, we've met. What was your name again?" I was all "nice save, Brett". Not that I expect him to remember people's names, I think it's really cute he still asks people their names, though. So then, he took my hand and kissed it, and we laughed. I also got a hug at some point, maybe when we were laughing and talking about how Lindsey directs all the girls to him because he's not married...I can't remember exactly when, though. But it was nice, I like him, he's funny and cool. But of course all you guys know that. :D
I didn't bring up how I had once touched his boob. :p Still, Brett is my boyfriend. hahahahahaha.
Then we waited forever, then Lindsey came out. Then you know the rest. It was really fun, though, it seemed the whole night whoever I was talking to, we were laughing. There was a good size group of us there who knew each other from before, all funny and cool. I also got to see someone I hadn't seen in awhile, that was nice. And of course I met Christy, who is great and funny too. Just a really, really, laughie night. I was really excited, though, while we were waiting at the stage door, and couldn't stop talking. But, whatever, we were just standing there. I really had a great time with everyone.
And, my god, there were $5 Sierra Nevada Pale Ales on tap! I've never seen a beer that cheap in any of the other venues I've been to.
Things that sucked:
1. No one was standing up dancing until the end songs. It was really hard for me to keep my seat, then for two whole songs me and Deborah and Christy were the only ones dancing. HaHA!
2. Security guard blocked us from the stage, even though we were in second row aisle.
3. I didn't get to leave with the band.
That's all that sucked!
Then me and Deb got lost for a few minutes in SF on the way to the Bay Bridge, then briefly again when we got back to Berkeley. It was fun and funny. I have the worst sense of direction on the planet, so I was of no help. In fact, a couple times I, how do you say, steered us exactly the opposite of where we should go? I always have a fun time with Deborah - and thanks for the ride! She said I might have to take BART next time due to my almost total lack of directional congnisence and tendency to call out confusing street directions at the last minute.
Again, the show is flawless and wonderful, see it as much as you can!

Excellent you obtained a siggy...very cool of you to step back a little...I would have too.
I'm jeal...I have all the sigs but his...hopefully I will get lucky in LA. What did you have him sign?
Did security allow anyone to approach the stage - especially during GYOW?
Do you know if Christy was allowed to use her cam?
Have you been to that venue before? It looks very pretty in pics. How was it?
Taku kicksass on the percs...

See the "things that sucked" section for security guard tales. In other words, no, and he stepped on Christy's foot. Only the front row could "approach", but really they mainly just stood up and took a couple steps forward as the stage was so close.
I think we were all free to do what we wanted as far as cameras. There were no signs, and no one told us that on the way in. The venue was pretty, but kind of all plush velvety. The sound was great. I had never been there before.
Good luck with your sigs, I just got Brett and Linds. But I don't really care about sigs, I just wanted to kind of...I dunno...say hi briefly and thank them? See Linds up close? And flirt with Brett.
I actually would've wanted a pic with Linds, but everyone was so crowdy that I felt too bad. One girl got a great pic, and a kiss on the cheek and a hug. Others got pics as well.
The Wiltern will be sooo fun, hella people (ledgies) are going - wish I could be there myself, have a great time. :woohoo:

And flirt with Brett Sounds like you were good at it ;) Well, once I obtained Nealle's and the others came in succession, I desire Lindsey's right above the couch - it is the purrfect place for it. If I don't obtain, that is OK too...but it would be nice...make the CD complete in a way.
Again, thanks for letting us know how it went...off to a meeting...I will check back later for others.

I didn't meet meet him. People were crowding him and stuff. Oh, I forgot the other thing that sucked. I was the first person standing by the stage door, closest. Standing forever. First one there. But then, before Linds would come out, the security goes "okay, people, I need you all to swing to the other side of the door". Which made me be behind people, instead of first in front like I had been the whole time! Damn! :p (Seriously, though, Damn. I was all excited because I would be right there in front of him when he came out. But then all these tall people were in front of me).
Good Luck!

You should have just jumped in the van with your b/f!

I was too polite to push my way up to Linds, doubtful I could've pulled off the van maneuver. Oh, right, and security....
"Hey, Brett! Got a smoke?" Then bribe the van driver to pull off really fast... I'll work on some better ideas for next time.
It's pretty convenient how everyone I like is my bf, no? :woohoo:
I thought later that it's only about 1 1/2 hour flight to LA anyway, then, you know, I would've had to make my way all the way back with my 8 dollars... Hardly worth it. ;)

Oh, Lindsey was kind of talking to the audience, I forget about what, maybe...about Brett being single, or...getting girls...hopefully someone else will remember.
Anyway, some girl yells out "I love you, Lindsey!" or "I'll go with you!" or something like that, and then some guy did, too, (the banter was such that this guy yelling to Lindsey was funny because he was hitting on Lindsey) and Lindsey makes a suprised face and goes (jokingly) "Wait...what city is this!??"
