Great review.

It is, thus far, his masterpiece, and as beautiful a pop record as can be made these days.

For whatever reason, Buckingham has stood on the margins despite the legend that is Fleetwood Mac. Anyone who gives his own recordings a chance will find in spades that it is his songs, his sounds, and his arrangements that brought them to the pinnacle of popularity.

Love that! And I love those moods listed to the left of the review..."earnest, wistful, bittersweet, poignant."

Thanks so much for sharing. All of these positive reviews are great to see! Surely this will raise his confidence. 4 & 1/2 stars, c'mon!

Wish I could run out at midnight tonight and pick up my copy!

that's a better review than the one posted on Barnes & Noble by "a reviewer":

"A reviewer, 09/29/2006 1 out of 5
self indulgent slop
one of the most disappointing releases in years. the vocals are weak and strained. one song sounds just like the other. lindsey may feel this is an artistic endeavor. but it is uninspiring and boring. destined to be another commercial failure."

I wonder if "A reviewer" may have the initials "S.N." ??

Well....I must say I didn't expect this positiveness. Great, but the odd thing is, I understand the reviewer, but the reviewer whose quote is to be read in Brian J.'s post I can understand too. It's a weird album.

HAHAHA! Sing it, sister. That's hilarious.

I got my copy today. Still don't like it, and now I can also add the ugly art direction as another reason why.

Not like it as much as you though you would, Gerald? I get the impression you don't seem totally thrilled with it. :(

Personally I don't agree with the other reviewer much. OK, his vocals aren't as good as Rumours days, but that's to be expected. They've held up pretty well comapred to many artists his age.

Oh yes, I love it to death. It moves me in an incredible way everytime I hear it 12 times since friday :D . The weird thing is that I understand everyone who hates it. The voicemanupilation can get on your nerves and if you are not listening through and through, it takes a long time to discover the rich melodies. esp in the round and round spinning offbeat pickingparts. And the production has a weird coldness too. If that's coming to you first I understand you'll hate it. And I simply disagree with everyone who says his voice isn't as strong as in the seventies. I've never thought he's the greatest singer on earth, nor guitarist, nor songwriter, nor producer, nor engineer, nor arrangeur. But He's THE BEST in the combination of all that.

That's cool. I just thought it would have been sad if you hadn't liked it since you're such a massive fan. If I hadn't like it I know I would have been gutted.

I also get what you mean, but I don't get how people can judge albums on 1 listen, so even if I dislike an album (luckily not the case this time  ) I always give it another few listens to make sure. I wish more people would be like this. Especially when it comes to Lindsey.

When you get the album and try to rate it there is one little problem at least for me. It is the fact that I know a couple of songs. These songs are not new, so it`s hard to let the CD impress you as a whole like it would if you didn`t know anything. I don`t know how often I listened to DOR and TFTS f.e. since 2001 but I guess it`s about 3 or 4 times. Or maybe a little more. ;)
But after I tried to look at the tracklist and rate each song I could say that this is imo the most impressive solo album he`s done so far. There is one song I really don't like and that is "It was you". The rest is either O.K. (f.e. I am waiting, Juniper) or good (f.e. Cast away dreams) or great imo (f.e. Under the skin, Shut us down).
Law and order somehow was great and in another way not meant too serious as I believe and I think he himself once said so. Go insane has ups and downs and did sound a little 80`s dated to me even back then when I purchased it. OOTC was the most serious attempt to put a solo album together but in comparison of the songs to me the material on Under the skin is superiour quality-wise. Of course that`s all a matter of taste. But Mr. B. hit my taste with these songs. I now am hoping that the GOS pool is nearly empty so that I don`t know any of the songs on the hopefully upcoming 2007 album.
I think he deserves good reviews for UTS and I hope for a little more public attention which helps the next projects come true.

Well, Shuffle Riff (no one knows my name) Twist of Fate and Gift Of screws are still there. I'm sure at least two of them will appear, they're simply too good. I'm already anticipating the rocking one now, but that'll take a year. At least.

And I simply disagree with everyone who says his voice isn't as strong as in the seventies.
Gerald I disagree on that. I think you can hear it on the live shows esp. the bootlegs from the SYW tour. But it doesn`t matter too much. Voices are altering during the years. I think it's worse when artists are running out of ideas and release boring material. You can say anything about LB, I can truly understand everyone who says he doesn`t like his albums or cannot relate to his style. But I don't think one can say his songs are boring or he is running out of ideas. The GOS material was very good, this one is fine. His latest work is no sign for declining creativity.
But back to the singing. On some songs he doesn`t bring his abilities to shine. I am waiting f.e. To my ears the live version is better sung than here. That is probably not a matter of if he couldn`t have sung it better on the CD. It`s a question of production. His voice doesn't sound convincing enough. It doesn't serve the song or uses his full potential.
The same thing was going on on the SYHA demos over the years. The SYW version finally was much better as his voice wasn`t drowned that much. (I wonder if he sang into his handkerchief or what) Bleed to love her is another example where the voice didn`t serve the song as it could have been. These things are new. I never was unsatisfied with his voice performance and arrangement on his albums solo or FM before. The cracking effect on Shut us down however is an intentional thing as I am sure.
So all in all I think that the voice performance is less good than it was back then. But it is in no way doing any harm to the album as a whole. I really like this one.

I can understand that and I believe you are right. Shuffle riff will be there. And one or two additional GOS songs too.
It's a matter of personal taste but to me the best GOS songs are released now on SYW and UTS. I could do without the rest of it. Looking back on SYW I can say that the normal pop songs like Peacekeeper or BTLH don't appeal to me that much as stuff like Red rover. But of course I am looking forward to the next one nevertheless.

Well Stefan, since it is Lindsey's normal behaviour to bring out live versions before the studiorecording is there, I bet we get some incredible bad bootlegs from 1 or 2 songs planned for the next record, since he had said that he'd do a segment of his upcoming liveshows where he'd rock it.

Well, technically his voice was better in the seventies, but back then he was totally unable to do what he does on Shut Us Down. And I'm sorry for everyone who hates it, That vocal speaks to me like he never did before.

I hope so for you, but "no one knows my name" fits in the UTS-theme perfectly. By the way, if he plays that one I pull my hair out.

Not that I won't anyway:laugh:

Now that his voice ain't what it used to be, I'm glad that he isn't going the ProTools route of digitally repairing a vocal to sound perfect and as much human as possible (since it can be done). Instead he slaps on all those artificial effects, which don't really hide the weaknesses of his voice these days, and doesn't really seem to care about what people think about it.
