And Again Lindsey scares the heck out of the listeners. Including his biggest fans. I listened to it completely without skipping in the store and was all quiet inside afterwards. Everything sticks together on this album. It's lightness is just superficial. This is such a reflective album. His tormented soul is still everywhere without screaming out, the unbearable lightness of being. Now I understand the title. This is a record that comes from under the skin, but it stays there. It's creepy and sunny at the same time. Trembling air due to extreme heat. I'm blown away by it but can't say how I'd rank it. This is a totally new Lindsey Buckingham although we all know him too. The CD is playing now and the flow of this album is so strong that one cannot receive it as a collection of songs. Everything is glued together without seeing transitions: these songs need eachother. I love the fact that Lindsey AGAIN puzzles me bigtime and that there are incredible gems on this record, but now I'm just impressed with the thing as a whole. I don't know if I'm happy with it. I'm still too quiet inside. I think I'll have some thinking to do about my own life.

Thanks Gerald. A moving account of your first moments with Lindsey's new work.
Frankly this is the album of my dreams. While I absolutely love 'Shuffle Riff', 'Come' and 'Murrow', the standouts from the GOS set for me were the very songs that have ended up on this album.. with amazing new material that, unlinke the sometimes uneven SYW, is so unified. In this way I believe the album will be able to stand alone as well will its individual songs.
It will be a while until I get the CD in my hands (my dad is visiting here next month and will bring a copy - preusming its released in Australia by mid-October. Otherwise I'll try Amazon, but with shipping etc, getting him to bring it is cheaper).
Ah at last it's here - Lindsey Buckingham's new CD. And my bday tomorrow too. Thanks Lindsey - the perfect present!

Well, Joe, I listen to it for the fourth time now and the album is really impressive if you're open for it. But I just KNOW that he'll scare 99% of the chiffons. They'll hang high in the curtains when they hear it.
This album is a chiffondemolisher. With that said, It is seriously a smash in the face of Reprise too. They won't sell nothin' , but gather quite some critical acclaim. This is the most daring thing he brought out since Go Insane. So Reprise had to swallow the bitter financial pill, but hooray for them to take the risk and bring it out. That's believing in good art.

Hmm. I am not sure why the album would scare "chiffons". I really love it. Some of the vocals take some getting used to but its right up there with OOTC for me. The lyrics are even better than Cradle, IMO Vocally..eh. Under the Skin and Castaway Dreams are two of the best things he has ever written. (along with old faves SGCYM and DOR) Reprise put the album out so someone there must have liked something about the album.

Ofcourse, but they tried to convince Lindsey to put some rocktracks from his next album on this one, but he stayed with the total vision on this one. giving him that space is a great thing, but only logical. I bet they are not happy with the commercial possibilities of this album, but kudo's to them to keep believing in the artist.

And........what are your first thought on the album? Can you relate to anything I wrote?Yes, I can, I am in awe also. You can't help but sit down and pay attention and let it all come to you when this album is on. No way you can play it and then turn to do your ironing or dishes (which is when I usually play music). There is a message in it, and if you listen to it front to back, you'll get it. But in each message is an even deeper message. I can't explain it, but he knocks my socks off. I am a big fan of 'less is more' and he did an outstanding job. I love what he is saying. I look forward to his 'rock' album, but really, this stripped down acoustic trip is just that, a very nice trip. Good job, Linds. :D
Now, I am as big of a fan of Stevie as I am of Lindsey, so I am still puzzled about what you mean by Chiffondemolisher. You saying you have to really be a fan of Lindsey in order to appreciate this album? I was playing it in my living room earlier and my sister was doing some college work there, and she had to put it down and just listen to the music, even though she is not particularly a Lindsey fan. She is a guitar fan though, she owns a few and plays them, but she said she really liked what she heard.

Absolutely amazing feeling. After 14 years I was walking in the store and purchased the new album. The import was just in time, I didn`t believe in that. If someone had told me 3 months back that I would listen to a new LB album today I wouldn`t have believed it.
The booklet is great. There are very nice photos in there. There are fantastic songs on the album. From the ones we already knew I think that SGTYM fits the best to the new songs style-wise. DOR remains a great song, style wise it is not a real break but I seem to recognize the style difference.
I like the live version of I am waiting better than this studio version. I don`t know about the voice on this one. But that`s my impression after first listen, so I`ll give it a chance.
I`m also not too fond of the alternated TFTS-version. I cannot relate to It was you and I think that`ll stay that way. Not too late is a super starter for the album. After a few listens during the last weeks I like Show you how now. Btw Show you how and DOR get a special "featuring" mention on the removable sticker on the album so I assume these two are the radio/single choices. The sticker wants us to believe that this is "the first album in 10 years from one of Rock's great visionaries" I would say the somehow lost 4 additional years. The track Under the skin is great also.
I wonder if Lindsey used this vocal approach (breaking whisper voice) intentionally or if his voice just changed over the years. I am not talking about the echos which he always used. Where it fits perfectly is Shut us down. I thought he was crazy when I heard it first a few years ago. After a couple of listens I loved this songs. It stays outstandig to me. On other parts of the album this breaking voice approach is a little irritating. Maybe this will change also.
All in all I think the album is something special!

Again: I was trying to draw attention with a joke. I love Stevie as much as you do. The little truth beneath the joke is that I think alot of Onlystevielovers will be turned off by this album, like they were turned off by alot of his solowork except OOTC.

I realise it is unlikely, but if it is, have you tried listening to the album with the longer version instead of the cut one to see how the album flows?

Yes it's cut and I did what you said. It wouldn't have made any difference in flow, but I cannot be objective in that-if possible at all- because SUD is already totally under my skin. I don't find it as irritating as I thought it would be if you're listening to the album as a whole. It is, though, if you're just playing the track. But that's no prob, we have the Elizabethtown-one.

Picked it up on friday , but was out four most of the weekend so haven't been online till now bassically, (actualy i had my dad pick it up , otherwise i would have had to wait till saturday till i could get it,i know it's only a day , but he this is Lindsey duh)
The funny thing on the sticker it says : "The first album in 10 years from one of rock's great visionaries"
wasn't OOTC released in 1992 ;)
the visionary bit however goes great with the lyrics from the opening track "not to late"
As gerald i have not yet picket out a favorite but been listening to the album as one piece
although i like (and always have liked) "to try for the sun"
and love the harmony parts on most of the album
definately a worthy edition to the FM collection, (as if with lindsey i had any doubt that would be the case) ;)

Been listening to the entire thing since yesterday, still waiting for the actual CD to arrive but since someone already shared it via P2P.. :o :D
The three tracks I hadn't heard yet turned out to range from good to great, I've been humming them in my head all day. But let's wait until everyone has it so we can start reviewing it in earnest. :)

*having seizures of excitement, hands trembling and sweat on forehead....* I can't wait another Bucking second to hear this!!!
So glad people seem to be so impressed with it ... and to hear that Lindsey truly does seem to have gone his (own) way and done something meaningful both for him and for the real fans...
*twitching*
Something strange has been happening. I've been humming & singing-in-my-head Show You How since last night... and can't get rid of it.
And I've only heard the song.. 3, 4 times, maybe? I know, I should be ashamed of myself, can't call myself a proper LB fan, can I;) I haven't been that enthousiastic about the new album yet, my mind was just at other styles of music.
But it's been creeping in without me even noticing it! I bet you, in a week I'll be listening to LB 24/7:]

True. I must say I thought that the other new songs lacked memorable melodies too, but after three days I'm changing my mind...Not Too Late, UTS and Juniper grow bigtime. My first hesitating and critical view is already shoving towards big love. Especially towards the total unity of the album.

I went to 3 stores looking for the album today, and it was nowhere to be found: FYE (at our mall), Wherehouse (a HUGE store - they usually have everything, even very obscure stuff) and Wal-Mart (just to see - it usually has a limited selection). Not a copy anywhere. I could have driven another 20 miles to BestBuy, but gas prices haven't gone down *that* much.
However, it's already on 2 different P2P services...

The story of a visionary....Finally exposed.
Yesterday I collected my copy of another CD. A couple of years ago I would have been foaming at the mouth for it but with the passage of time it just became another album I should probably get... Until I got it...
Under The Skin. The new album by singer/guitarist/writer/producer/arranger/engineer/husband and daddy Lindsey Buckingham.
I think, and I really do mean this, its possibly his greatest work. Yes, 14 years in the making but now I realise why. Finally Buckingham has confirmed to me what I have believed for some time. His inner turmoil and realisation that he cannot continue with his anal behaviour any longer has finally got to him. A self realisation if you will.. He is indeed a visionary and maybe now, with the perspective of a family he has realised he won't get the public adulation he has always craved for and actually its not really that important. It has defined his behaviour for the last 25 years. Trying to justify himself no matter how good his work. It caused him bitterness towards his counterpart in Fleetwood Mac, It irritated him by her commercial success for so long. Finally he has realised his failings and put it out there, exposing his emotions for all to hear. He has found some equilibrium and with it a degree of inner peace he has been missing for most of his adult life.
The songs are stripped back and raw, the guitar work flawless and the vocals are honest and real. I'm not going to do a track by track review. Doing so means nothing to me right now and there will be many others who will review it anyway. I do prefer some of his work on Out Of The Cradle more in terms of production and content but I have to say this work is by far his most emotional and in turn it is the most emotional for me as a listener to finally feel and hear the real man within the rock star exterior.
25 years of bull**** got flushed away with this album and I can only see good things for this man and his musical future from now on. He is a free spirit once more.
I think those of you that see him on his short US tour will find a rather more happy and relaxed man out there. Playing from the heart instead of the head at last.
Shackin'up adds:

I hope I can re-invigorate this thread, because I think it is good to discuss the artistic value of the album in stead of just ranking and rating the songs.

in lieu of a simple "review" of the album, i'm working on a full analysis, that i will post on a personal site later.
that being said, i think this record is absolutely fantastic. even the songs i don't care for as much (coughcoughtrack1coughcough). oh and, at first, i wasn't big on cast away dreams, but i'm starting to like it more. it's pure and done on the artist's terms, and that is something i really, really appreciate amid all the trash that's out now - even on the indie labels.
i am especially loving his cover of i am waiting. much more appealing than the original, imo. it's probably the one i listen to most right now.. i really like the clarity of his guitar parts and the simple vocal. to me, it's the one that has the strongest "sitting in the living room" feel.

AAhh, I'm curious, Sarah, I agree on the remarks you make apart from coughcoughtrack1coughcough ;) I had the same with castaway dreams, and IAW just fits in this batch perfectly. Oddly enough, That's the case for me with DOR, too. In the flow of the album, which is absolutely stunning- one of the best flowing albums I have ever heard- I'm beginning to accept the mainstream feel of DOR. Shut Us Down, you all know how that gem has an impact on me, makes me totally ready for DOR. It's a smoothing restmoment before the ending anthems (I can't think of a better term for SGCYM an Juniper) of the record.
