What do you think? Is it a hidden gem? A waste of space? A throwaway tune? A fun little ditty?
I'm a sucker for any song with clapping (Jack & Diane, Take the Money & Run...) so that automatically makes me a fan. I think I remember reading that Stevie said this was an "I don't care" song, that it didn't have any deep or hidden meaning and that she wasn't really emotionally attached to it. I believe that she would have preferred this song taken off of Rumours rather than SS, but it's obviously much shorter, so length may have been an issue. Of course, add SS and remove this, and you've got a damn dark record, IMO.
I was a bit surprised when the live Buckingham Nicks version surfaced. I honestly thought this was written later. The whole "you tell me that I'm crazy" and "you say you love me but you don't know" reeks of the breakup to me. Of course, who's to say that this tune is about LB at all. If it is, I think we can safely assume that they didnt have a perfect relationship.
I love the harmonies, esp. on the "whoa's." And I can't tell you how long I got this line wrong:
I don't want to know the reasons why
Love keeps right on walking down the line
I always thought it was "...reasons why I love you, I keep on walking...)

i totally adore IDWTK. i think it's a great, breezy, cali-pop tune with awesome harmonies. stevie really shows her ability to blend her voice with others' and also her knowledge of two-part harmony. she really is musically talented. obviously not instrumentally, and not vocally in a conventional way, but when it comes to pop, she is brilliant.
rumours would be so different without this song. as p said, it would've been so dark without it ... IDWTK adds much-needed levity and totally changes the overall emotional landscape of the album. imo, SS is one of stevie's masterpieces, but i am glad it was left off the original album. it never would have had the same impact on the dance had it been on the original release.

I love this song!! I can see where SN would have gotten pissed at MF for making the decision to put this song on Rumours over SS, but I really do think it's a nice little ditty. I love how they are singing together on the whole song. I mean, who came up with that brilliant idea??? (I am serious! I think it's brilliant!)
I want to say that don't really care for the BN live version of IDWTK, but I don't want to jinx myself and not have any more BN live tracks resurface, so I never said that.

Its a throw-away tune. I don't like this song at all. In fact, its only second to "Don't Stop" as my least favourite song on "Rumours"

It's a catchy little tune and I've always preferred it to "Silver Springs."
The studio version of the latter tune never sounded right to me. It has a quality that I can only describe as "hollow." The vocals and the instrumentation are entirely too light and don't quite convey the impact of the lyrics. Even Lindsey's guitar playing (*gasp*) seems somehow sub-par to me. So as much as I enjoy "Silver Springs" from The Dance, I'm thankful that it was relegated to non-album b-side status in the Rumours days.

'Rumours' is a quality album, but I have heard every song so many times I don't care if I ever hear them again. "You Make Lovin' Fun" "Oh Daddy" and "Silver Springs" get the occasional spin, but I don't bother with anything else. And I get pissed off that this is the only album talked about. Fleetwood Mac have recorded more than one album you know!!!

Yeah, I sort of picked up on that with "hate gave you me for a lover."
Wait, I thought it was "Fate gave you me for a lover"
I like this song a lot, it's fun to sing, has a good beat, you can dance to it. It seems really normal, and is, but that super clappy tight harmony even beat and phrasing - I mean, it's so even - kind of makes it special.
Out of the four songs in it's category, It is my third favorite. The category is "normal songs that are cool, and have good harmonies and good beat, but are regular" - whatever - The other songs in the category are:
Monday Morning (#4, for me)
Second Hand News (#1, or tied)
Blue Letter (#1, or tied. I love me some Blue Letter)
IDWTK (#3)
Does that give a better idea of what the category entails?
I am also a sucker for clapping. And fast even songs.
If anyone else can totally see why I put all these in the same category, holla. No, I mean HOLLA. What with this board, I'd be suprised if someone understood my theme here, and would want to know.

Wait, I thought it was "Fate gave you me for a lover"
The transcriptions of the lyrics that I've read have it as "hate," but "fate" does make more sense.

Have you ever heard the DVD-A version in 5.1 surround? I'll never forget the night I brought my new system home and got it all hooked up and plopped that into the player. I skipped right to SS and bawled the whole way thru ... it was pure gooseflesh. But I know what you mean about sounding hollow (I'm thinking the version on The Chain box set,) I agree. You have to hear the 5.1 remastered version and suddenly hollow takes on a new and quite lovely meaning.

Nope. I'm weird. I'll spend untold amounts of money on CD and DVD box sets, out of print discs, special editions, etc. But when it comes to the actual electronics that play them, I just buy whatever's cheap. No 5.1 surround sound here.

It's ok. I 'm not crazy about it or anything but I don't usually skip it.
I also like clapping-songs and it 's a fun song to listen to.
And may I say that I think the SS and IDWTK comparison doesn't seem right to me, those songs fall into an entirely different category. I know that people tend to do that because IDWTK had somehow "replaced" SS on the original release, but other than that, the comparison is pretty unfair IMO.

I like the song. I'd, for the most part, agree with the "Everly Bros" comparison. Those harmonies are so close, they almost sound like one voice...a typical Everly Bros trait.
I like the Goo Goo Dolls cover of it just as much, if not POSSIBLY a tad bit more, on occasion, depending on my mood.

The reason Rumours is my favorite album is because love almost ALL its songs. The 2nd place would be white album and Tango, for the same reason. Actually it's my fave band because I like the whole albums, just few songs I dislike
So IDWK.. I like it a lot, not one of my faves, but I like it. If you ask me if I'd choose this song instead of S.Springs, as Stevie told in the Rumours special.. I'm not sure, I'd choose SS I guees, because it's more touchy, to me.
But I like the song. Part of the California 70s sound I guess...

IDWTK is one of my favorite songs on Rumours. The vocal is pretty incredible as far as harmonies go, very tight and punchy throughout. Stevie and Linds also nail some hard notes at the end, which is really impressive.
I agree with the earlier comment that the song lightens the mood on Rumours, which gets a bit somber on side 2.

so tell me-I need to know. why the anti-SS?? did someone follow you down till the sound of their voice haunted you? do you not like Autumn or hearing the ocean crashing? the thought of the colors "blue and green" together make you want to hurl? what is it??
I only say this because it is my fav song evah.
o.k. back to the topic at hand. I am really into IDWTK at the moment. It's one of those songs I have hardly listened to, and played it awhile ago and thought "wow! why have I not been listening to this?" It also helps that I actually read the lyrics sheet and figured out some mistakes I had been making. I agree with what everyone is saying about it being a light-hearted fun song that lightens the mood of rumours. I also like it for the obvious brilliant harmonies. I'm glad they included it on rumours instead of SS only because SS would not have been as popular in 97 :D
to add to that-my best friend who is a mac fan hates this song. I played it for her and she said it reminded her of second hand news (which she also hates. )I'm currently looking for a new best friend.

That's hilarious. Seriously! :wavey:
I also love the way they both sing the whole song together. Two voices made to sing together. And I think Silver Springs became much more powerful the way it came out during The Dance. The blistering stares from Stevie to Lindsey...20 years later and she's still pissed as hell. That's beautiful.

I think you need to go back and read my post homie. I actually DID say I'm glad it wasn't on Rumours. Had that been the case, then it wouldn't have had such a significant impact in 97.  And plus I love IDWTK. :D

I absolutely concur with that statement. I've always thought that they have never fully realized or capatilized on their vocal harmonies. I've never considered "I Don't Want To Know" as a throw-away song. It's a great song that fully utilizes Stevie and Lindsey's vocal qualities together, upfront and clear. And sadly, to a lesser degree, in other songs you get bits of of various vocal combos -- Stevie with Christine, Christine with Lindsey. There should have been more duets and two-part harmonies.
What's somewhat disconcerting is how Lindsey's current production methods further deludes those harmonies. Sometimes a lot of his background vocals are so highly layered and processed that there are no discernable individual voices. Much of it sounds too generic for me.

Sometimes this song gets a lot of undeserved flack because it replaced Silver Springs. As much as I love Silver Springs, I am not sorry that IDWK was in its place. When I first bought Rumours this was one of my favorite songs on the album. I absolutely love Stevie and Lindsey's harmonies on this song and I always feel like dancing when I hear it. Have you tried to give Pre-Rumours lineups a chance? When I first became a fan I didn't know much about the previous lineups but I was pleasantly surprised when I listened to it. There was some good stuff back then and it's a shame some of those lineups do not get the credit they deserve because people immediately shut the door on it because Lindsey or Stevie weren't in the band.

Rumours is my second favorite FM album after Tusk. I think it was a wonderfully made album. But I can certainly understand how someone could get sick of it. These songs are played to freakin death everywhere! I heard "Don't Stop" a billion times when I used to go to Chuckie Cheese as a little girl and on the radio. That is when I didn't even know anything about them. I am surprised I don't hate that song.
