Ok I have a problem. I'm going to see the psychiatrist Friday about possibly getting some new depression meds. I'm currently taking the following daily:

60mg of Selexa
150mg of Wellbutrin

The problem I have is that my weight is up lately and I'm not real happy about it. I know I make the choices to eat what I eat, but I know some meds are more succeptible to making one eat more than others. Any reccomendations before I see the shrink?

I don't know anything about Selexa. Wellbutrin is actually touted as helpful for weight loss. http://www.aphroditewomenshealth.com/news/20020315000435_health_news.shtml You have to exercise and watch what you eat though. Baby steps! I found Dr. Weil's 8 Weeks to Optimum Health helpful in changing my attitudes toward diet and exercise from perceived punishments to choices I make because they make me feel good.

I HATE watching what I eat and I hate exercising even more... it feels like such a miserable chore. I want to be healthy, but I do not want to waste my life denying myself good food and leisure-time, just to have a nice looking body.

Like you said, it feels like a punishment.

Lord Child - you cannot eat like a hog everyday and expect not to look like one

However, if you eat in moderation, e.g. a pizza once a week instead of five nights a week, and outside of that time, eat six smaller and more sensible meals a day, your body will be fine.

A good rule of thumb is if it comes in a paper bag or in a can - it is not good for you

It's sort of like brain washing yourself. A good one for exercise is Feeling Good. Actually that one is good for getting rid of negative thoughts period since it's about self-cognitive therapy. It is not one of those touchy feely pie in the sky self-help books but is very scientific. One tip for exercise is "I only have to do 5 minutes", of course you're going to do more. It really does help, you don't think you can "trick" yourself but you can. If I'm really tired I tell myself, "one more minute" until I get my 30 in. Fake it 'til you make it, baby!

Right on. Use the 80/20 rule. Be "good" 80% of time and bad 20%. Be very very bad though cuz life is short! ;)

I do it all wrong, because I only eat two meals a day... and they're BIG meals. It's what my body seems to want.
I know I need to change though, but I have such a bad attitude when it comes to this kind of thing. And Joshua always tells me he loves my body exactly the way it is... so that's like my "get out of jail free" card to not lose weight. :o

Hey! I do that exercising trick...I always tell myself "just five more minutes.." then I can do more...I finally worked my way back up to 30 this weekend...and I didn't die :p

Of course I also ate horribly this weekend (pizza and brownies) but at least the rest of the week is filled with healthy meals and exercise.

Well, you had lost some weight and your were training in the park by your house - what happened :shrug:I lost it on the South Beach Diet, and I have to say that I really did feel great (and apparently looked good too, going by all the compliments I was getting)... but I just couldn't keep up that low-carb thing any longer. I need pasta, bread and pizza!!! And not just a small bite of them on a "treat day."

And, yeah, I was doing good with the exercising... but that's always something I have to MAKE myself do, so it's very easy to go back to old habits again.

Any diet that cuts out certain food groups is a waste of time in the long run. Ryan and I need to haul up there and train you for a few weeks. Interested? Any suggestions on where to stay?

David, as far as I know, Wellbutrin is the only anti-depressant helpful with weight loss.

I'm such the stress-eater.

Wierdly enough, on my stressful days all I want to do is cook to relax myself. It usually works too. Concentrating on that really helps take my mind off of whatever was stressing me out.

To summarize...having a bad day? Come over and gorge yourself.

I have long thought exercise is the best medicine for all but the most serious depression. Many studies confirm this.

This is true. Exercise doesn't help with severe depression though as sparky mentioned, although combined with meds it does. It didn't help me when I was extremely depressed but it helped boost the meds quite a bit. I basically consider it a prescription for my mental well-being so it's a really high priority. Pretty much #1. It's one thing you can be completely selfish about, taking that time for yourself, without any guilt!

Also, motivation follows action. It's paradoxical I know but when you get moving it will motivate you to move. It's that initial push that is difficult but the rewards are more than worth it. The best thing to do is to STOP THINKING AND START MOVING! :D

Only Ledgies would turn a psychiatric discussion into a food discussion. :p

BTW, it's Celexa. David just remember - meds aren't a magical cure, or a quick fix. Diet & exercise & meditation can do wonders for depression in conjuction with other therapies (meds & counselling.) So you yourself have to commit & make an effort to get yourself out of this. Meds alone will not do it.

I've been taking 300mg of Wellbutrin a day for about a year now, the first month I lost 20-25 lbs. I wasn't hungry at all, it was a weird feeling. I probably put about 10 lbs. back on since.

My problem since taking Wellbutrin is INSOMNIA. I can't sleep for anything. the Dr. gave me Ambien CR for that but I don't really like it. The controlled release works too slow for me and I end up waking up again about 2 hours after I fall asleep and lie awake for another couple hours. Tylenol PM does the trick a little better for me, though I still wake up, but I can fall back asleep quicker.

Both my Dr. and my shrink harp on me about exercise too. I just can't ever stick to it long term. I can go a couple weeks, then I just lose motivation, interest or whatever. That's the part I wish I could stick too, because I think it would really make a difference.

Have you tried Zoloft? When I was on it I slept really well. I had to switch to Effexor because the Zoloft wasn't helping and I haven't slept as well since.

Yeah, I couldn't sleep as well when I first started, either, and wasn't that hungry. That only lasted for a couple weeks, though. Maybe that dose is too high for your body chemistry. I take 200 mg. twice a day. Also, someone here told me to not take it too late in the day to help with the sleep thing.
