so, i'm always really curious about what other people's towns look like. so i thought i'd post some pictures of mine. i took these today while walking home from work. it was a really weird day because the sun was out, but there were also a lot of dark clouds in the sky.

here i am standing on the bridge downtown, facing north. the white building in the background is the tallest building in kent ... a grain silo!

http://carrie721.smugmug.com/photos/97692423-M.jpg

franklin square deli. this is where i toil daily, making sandwiches for unappreciative bastards. i mean ... customers.

http://carrie721.smugmug.com/photos/97693740-M.jpg

here's a nice autumn-y shot. kent's a nice-looking town, kinda. that building on the corner that i'm facing used to be thompson's, a cool, locally-owned drug store. now it's smokin' tattooz. yeahhhhh. one of five tattoo shop in a two-block area.

http://carrie721.smugmug.com/photos/97691356-M.jpg

another tattoo shop. this one's sparky's tattoos. sparky's an asshole and comes to the deli way too often. and smells bad. but look - he'll pierce both your nipples for $60! sweet ****!

http://carrie721.smugmug.com/photos/97694563-M.jpg

here we go. this is turnup records, complete with chinese-lantern-cum-turnip in the window. they sell second hand vinyl and communist/conspiracy-theorist literature.

http://carrie721.smugmug.com/photos/97696093-M.jpg

this is a "headstone" at the mock cemetary for extinct species of north eastern ohio. poor big-eared bats!

http://carrie721.smugmug.com/photos/97695800-M.jpg

right after 9/11, someone threw a brick through those front doors.

http://carrie721.smugmug.com/photos/97697499-M.jpg

and finally ... my street. you can't see my house, though ... it's on the right, after that stop sign.

http://carrie721.smugmug.com/photos/97697815-M.jpg

ok, who else wants to share?

yeah, a lot of kent is really quaint! especially my neighborhood, which is about 2 blocks from downtown. unfortch, there's also a lot of sprawl happening & housing developments are popping up everywhere. our school system is very well-respected in the area, so it attracts a lot of cleveland commuters.

can't wait to see your pics!

Very cute little town, Carrie!

Yeah, I could so just see me taking photos of my town. "Here is the big ugly prison where Charles Manson used to be held. Here are the ugly sprawling Outlet Stores where they sell last year's crap at a reduced price. Here's the enormous monstrosity of a Catholic church whose bells wake me up in the morning. Here's the church that used to be a movie theater. Here's the other church that used to be a movie theater. Here's the church that shares the same parking lot as the second church that used to be a movie theater. Here's a gas station that closed down. Here are the two gas stations built across the street from the one that closed down. Here is another gas station that closed down. Here are some more gas stations across the street from the other one that closed down..."

You live in a cute town Carrie.

Here is a picture of the Providence skyline at dusk that I took about a year ago. That is same skyline that is featured in the show "Family Guy".

Here is a shot of Providence right before something called Waterfires. You can see the wood in the caludrons along the river.

thank you. the architecture is unbelievable. the campus sits on 700 acres in princeton. down the road off of nassau street (the main drag in town) is an amazing view of the boat house on lake carnegie and before you arrive at rt. 1, there's nothing but trees lining the road. it's so beautiful.

I like these town pics. Carrie, your town is cute. Tooootally made me eat my ass on what I thought the midwest was like. lol. Actually, I figured it was nice, just pretty flat.
And, the only person that showed us some mountains of my spirit was Irishgrl. Of course. California foothills and mountains are so amazing. That's my place, I'm that girl.
Anyhoot - I don't have many pics of my actual hometown, but I do have a few of where I live. They are repeats, though. Which makes them no less awesome, but may make them a smidge more boring. To those who have seen them. Gah, I should take my camera out more. My vacation pics are way better, but that would be cheating, even though I feel like that is where I really live.

Amber, I was born in Oakland, and when I was commuting into the city to law school on BART, we used to pass thru a section of Oakland (Rockridge?) that looked like it was being refurbished/rennovated...I really liked all the cute little homes I saw...I happen to love old Victorians, and I like all the wood shingling. Once, when I worked in the library at my community college, we were doing a huge cleaning, and I had the section of the alphabet at the beginning....I saw a lot of books on architecture, and I ended up checking out a book or two on Bay Area Architects and their styles. VERY enlightening. Many of those styles found their way to Chico. Have you ever just ridden around parts of Chico to see the different house styles? Bungalows, Craftsman, Victorian, Spanish, Art Deco....its all there. And my favorite house on 8th St, I call the Wavy Gravy house. It has a unique roof shingling style called slump. its so cool! Take a drive sometime down East First Street (turns into West First I think!) or even the Esplanade....

Im glad you liked my pics, they came from a local website where you can see local shots. I love this part of the State, it SMELLS good. I know you love this area too, but be warned, there's not a lot of money to be made here, (unless you're in medicine, and there's WAAAAAAY too many attorneys!) thats why Im working for the County....

PS: just for you Amber, I found a site that has a slide show of Chico/Paradise pics:

Well my window does not have that view, ha ha,, my street is inner..
but it's just 2 blocks from the cliff to the beach, and it's very nice in the summer, you can wake up early in the morning to run. And winter is not so strong so you can do it the whole year.

However you can see the coast is desertic, so I'm jealous of you guys who live near forest and woods. It's very beautiful those towns in the US, Europe, Australia, etc..

amber - thanks. downtown kent is pretty nice. i could take some pics of some strip malls and home depots if you want a more typical representation of the midwest. your pics are lovely. i really liked the last house picture and the water pic.

sparky -  sorry, i probably should've clarified :D . that ugly shop does not belong to our lovely, non-asshole, non-smelly sparky.

There is no such thing as an ugly beach! I grew up on the beach and now live in an area of NC that is about 3 hours from the coast. I would settle for your ugly beach any day.

You all live in such beautiful areas. Anyway, I went outside and snapped some pictures around my house. I'll take "town" pictures tomorrow.

This is the front of my house. My husband just painted it. We need to do some landscaping (pine straw, etc.) next:

These two are taken from my back deck. What I love about the deck is that you're up on the second story of the house so it feels like you're in the trees:

Thanks Paula. Imperial Beach is a nice quiet beach town but things could change with this announcement. They were here filming the pilot last month.

Deadwood" may be done as a series, but HBO will still have a David Milch show on its schedule next year.

The premium-cable network has picked up "John from Cincinnati," a mystery/family drama centered on a legendary surfing clan. HBO ordered 12 episodes of the show after seeing a rough cut of the pilot, which was co-written by Milch and "surf noir" author Kem Nunn.

Production on the series is scheduled to begin later this fall, with summer 2007 as the target premiere date.

"David Milch is one of the most original storytellers working in any format today," says Carolyn Strauss, president of HBO Entertainment. "We are honored to have him as part of the HBO family. The sky is the limit for his new series."

The story focuses on the Yost family -- former surfing champion Mitch (Bruce Greenwood, "Capote"), wife Cissy (Rebecca De Mornay, "The Practice"), their drug-addicted son Butchie (Brian Van Holt, "Threshold") and Butchie's son, Shaun (Greyson Fletcher) -- in Imperial Beach, Calif., a seaside town near the U.S.-Mexico border. The arrival of the title character (Austin Nichols, "Deadwood"), a mysterious young man seeking surfing lessons, shakes up the family's unhappy life.

"John from Cincinnati" also stars Matt Winston ("Teachers"), Ed O'Neill (Milch's "Big Apple," "Married ... with Children") and Luis Guzman ("Luis").

I love seeing where everybody lives. I'm at work now so I don't have any pics handy, but here a few I got off of Google:

Oh, I live in Heerlen, the very, very south of the Netherlands. Fairly touristy area, because of the *only* hills in this flat, flat country and the lovely views that creates. Many people vacation here...

This is where I spent many summers...it's actually a lot bigger than this and there a lot more cafes and restaurants, it's the very center of our city.

I took my camera with me on a walk along the creek this morning, and I just thought I'd share a couple of photos I snapped:

I'm not familiar with the raptors in my area so I'm not sure what species these are exactly, but here's a vulture of some sort sunning itself in a eucalyptus tree. Literally dozens of them congregate in this particular stand of trees to roost. They also have a habit of circling my house, which is kind of eerie. They're beautiful, though.

http://www.angelfire.com/music6/walteregan/hometown/vulture.jpg

And a hawk resting in a gnarled old oak tree.

http://www.angelfire.com/music6/walteregan/hometown/hawk.jpg

Edit: Okay, so I did a little googling - the first one is a turkey vulture and the second is a red shouldered hawk.

Those pics are awesome! Even though large bird scare me a little. :o

Actually, there was some sort of hawk in my yard the other day. My neighborhood has developed a rat problem, and the fact that my idot next-door neighboors leave garbage bags out for days at a time just makes it worse. They now have rats living under their patio. I talked to them about it last summer, when I witnessed a rat carrying A WHOLE PIECE OF PIZZA across my yard from their garbage. But I guess they don't care. I hate them. But I digress.

The other morning, I opened my gate & heard a russling sound. A hawk-like bird took flight (scaring the hell out of me) and as it was flying away, I noticed a body with a long tail hanging from its talons. Yay hawk! At least he's trying to help with the rodent problem.

I'm not bothered by large predatory birds, I just think they're beautiful. Large parrots, on the other hand, scare the crap out of me. I absolutely will NOT touch them and I try to stay as far away as possible when one comes into the office for treatment.

Being so close to the creek, we have a lot of problems with rodents as well (rats, mice, moles). The hawks and owls in the area help out some and so do the feral cats, but it's still a constant problem and my own cats are totally useless. They're more interested in trying to get at my pet rat than in controlling the wild population.

Thankfully, though, all of our neighbors seem pretty clean.

Why did I miss this thread? I suck. I didn't take any of these, but here are a few pictures for starters...

Welcome to Sharpsburg, a slightly urbanized ****hole located just minutes away from scenic Downtown Pittsburgh, or slightly longer, depending on which bus you take, and how much of an asshole your driver is. On every block, you can find a bar, a pizza shop, and a surplus of drunk men with gold chains and mass amounts of body hair. There are churches every couple blocks. Everyone who lives here is either old or dead.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~njm1/StMaryPennSt.jpg

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~njm1/StMaryEntrance.jpg

Nobody cares about anything from that sign up until this point. This is St. Mary's, a Roman Catholic church that has been around for at least 100 years, and is quite pretty, inside and out. My parents got married there. They no longer hold regular services - there is no heat in the winter, and there is no air conditioning in the summer.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~njm1/guyasuta.jpg

If you go up the street for a few blocks, you'll find this dude - Guyasuta. He liked to chill and smoke up here. Not much has changed.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~njm1/10th-Main-LookingEast.jpg

Some bars. Two out of about thirty.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~njm1/16th-MainWest.jpg

Part of our playground, which is safely located along the main street.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~njm1/FireDeptSign.jpg

We really dig Guyasuta.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~njm1/BREW5.JPG

Fort Pitt Brewery. We also dig booze.

I'll go out and take some of my own tomorrow, if it's nice out. These are just a few of the more interesting parts of my ~haunts~.

^I love Catholic churches. I don't love church, mind you. Like, I don't want to go to church. Mostly because I'm not Catholic. But Catholic churches are stunningly beautiful, they can literally bring me to tears. Not modern cold boring contemporary churches - gimme the 150 year old gothic style or basilicas. Yup. Love 'em. Do I dare start a church thread? Perhaps an architecture thread? F*ck it, here's some pics (not mine) of local churches.

If you're at all interested in this stuff, please click the link. This is one of the largest & most important churches in the Buffalo area. It's actually in Lackawanna, which is a small city outside of Buffalo - my mom grew up there. Also, I worked for 9 years at the agency affiliated with this church, which was right next door to it; one of my best friends got married here (longest walk down a church aisle ever.) The man who built the church (and also founded the agency I used to work at), Father Nelson Baker, is being considered for sainthood right now. Like I said, I'm not Catholic, but things have happened that have convinced me that he should be beatified.
http://www.ourladyofvictory.org/Basilica/tour.html

Here's another one. Much smaller, much older. Just as beautiful. I was there last Srping with my mom to have the Easter basket blessed (even though I'm not Catholic, my mom is - but she's a Christer, lol.)
