so yeah, i called my local b&n so they'd at least have one copy in the store (for me).. and i was informed they'd be receiving 2 versions... regular, then barnes & noble exclusive. also, my tickets for the nashville show have "cd available at barnes & noble" printed on them.

on the b&n website, this info is available:

Under the Skin [B&N Exclusive Bonus Track]
1 Not Too Late
2 Show You How
3 Under The Skin
4 I Am Waiting
5 It Was You
6 Try For The Sun
7 Cast Away Dreams
8 Shut Us Down
9 Down On Rodeo
10 Someone's Gotta Change Your Mind
11 Juniper
12 Say Goodbye / Stevie Nicks B&N Exclusive Track

(link here (http://music.barnesandnoble.com/search/product.asp?EAN=093624322122&z=y&cds2Pid=1523&linkid=745986).)

so uh.. what's the deal with this say goodbye? think it's a live one? syw one? or just some sort of corporate trash - simply throwing stevie's name on it because oh my god lindsey couldn't possibly do something on his own?

if anybody knows, i'd like to know.. because i don't want a copy of the exclusive version if it isn't so exclusive. i'm not trying to hate, but none of my other lindsey cds have the stevie nicks stamp on them and that's just fine by me.

i'm not trying to hate, but none of my other lindsey cds have the stevie nicks stamp on them and that's just fine by me.None of our Stevie CDs had Lindsey playing on 'em until 'Trouble In Shangri-La,' and I don't remember anyone crabbing about it.
Just sayin.' ;)

I'm bummed that she's not on "I Am Waiting"... her backing vocals sounded beautiful, and now we'll never get to hear that version in full. That's a damn shame.

I rather have Lindsey alone in this CD, but then again, nobody is forcing me or any bodyelse to buy from Barnes and Noble. It's a curious move, I think, but then, Lindsey has done the Sounstage show with Stevie too. So in a way, it's expected almost.

I like the I Am Waiting song from the DVD very much but I hoping it is studio version in the Skin cd.

thanks for actually answering the question, marissa. i appreciate that. i was thinking the same because i've not seen any buzz in the stevie news about it.

and johnny stew.. i can't speak for that, because i'm not much of a stevie solo collector. i am going to kind of agree with you on the i am waiting point, though. i'd rather hear her make an appearance on his cd in the form of a new track. he's talking an awful lot about distilling his new stuff to a certain essence and making a complete work.. i don't see how throwing a recycled FM song (despite the fact that it was intended on being his own only) keeps with that idea.

i don't see how throwing a recycled FM song (despite the fact that it was intended on being his own only) keeps with that idea.

i don't either, other than the label wanting to make a few extra dollars by using her name -- which i believe, especially if barnes and noble is a corporate sponsor (which seems as such considering their name is printed on the back of your tickets). people don't buy a stevie nicks solo album to hear lindsey buckingham (other than us nerds, maybe). however, if this were some new song with the two of them, you know her fans would buy it just for that one song -- even if they didn't really care for lindsey as a solo artist. jmo.

johnny stew, if it were her version of i am waiting, i'd be stoked and would definitely purchase from barnes and noble to hear that. from what we've heard, i agree, it's beautiful.

For Christ's sake it's a friggin' bonus track ("BONUS" being the operative word here)...the album itself is still intact, they didn't replace one of the designed tracks from the album. Lindsey's concept is still intact, you just get ONE EXTRA TRACK.

Just buy the regular CD somewhere else than Barnes & Noble if it ruins your day so much. STOP FRIGGIN' BITCHING ABOUT IT!!!!!

i really don't think what sarah said constitutes as "bitching." she just started a thread to let people know about the "bonus track" and question whether or not it was new, live, or the same version we've heard since the release of say you will. perhaps you should stop being so goddamn salty and embrace healthy conversation.

The label might have wanted to "use" Stevie's name but Stevie had to ok it, right? She doesn't seem to have a problem being on the B and N version. Say Goodbye fits in nicely with the other songs we have, IMHO, especially next to Castaway Dreams. (I don't mean musically.)

I agree with those who would have loved to have the DR version of I am Waiting......her vocals sounded stunning in the short clip we have. It definately enhanced the song, for me.

Can we please stay on the discussion of the exclusive track and not bitching. Sarah's not bitching btw.

I would been happy without Stevie at all in a Lindsey solowork, but as I said earlier, people who don't like the idea of Stevie in the CD, can just not get the Barnes and Noble version. I think it would have been better, though, to have a track that is new to all -- Stevie or no Stevie. FM is always recycling, and now Lindsey is doing it too. He was going to do it on Gift of Screws with Go Insane too, wasn't he?

There are two songs in Lindsey's entire career that I don't care for -- "Save Me A Place" and "Shut Us Down" (I didn't count "Say Goodbye," because I love it live).

I don't think that at all qualifies me as someone who only likes Lindsey's "safe stuff." :p

There is some strumming on Shut Us Down -- it's a secondary track -- but none whatsoever on the Lindseys' version of George Harrison tune.I guess strumming isn't the right word then.
So somebody tell me what on Earth to call that rapid-fire plinka-plinka-plinka-plinka-plinka-plinka/plunka-plunka-plunka-plunka-plunka-plunka thing he does where he plays the same note six or seven times before moving onto the next note, which he also hits six or seven times.

In some songs it works brilliantly, but sometimes it doesn't compliment the vocal melody at all and ends up sounding like the musical equivalent of rubbing your tummy and patting your head.

What are the more experimental songs of Lindsey's that you like then Brian?

I still find it crazy that people find Shut Us Down one of Lindsey's more extreme songs. It's the kind of thing I've prayed Lindsey would do for years: stripped down, intimate, less polished with real emotion. I really think he shouldn't be afraid to alienate a few people, you know, take the Neil Young route. You lose a few fans, but you may also pick up a few on the journey. It's better than playing it safe. It's not like his solo albums have ever sold in big numbers anyway, he can afford to take the risk. I think so, but Gerald may be the only one with me on that point.

As I've said, my problem with it is that it sounds fussy to my ears. For something that should be intimate, the instrumentation and vocal melody are going in two completely different directions. I don't feel like I'm being drawn in, I feel like I'm being pushed away... thus, any real warmth or intimacy is lost.

The plinka-plinka is called finger-picking. Lindsey does a very fast variation on what is I think a kind of Travis picking style. What may seem disconcerting is the time signatures he uses on certain songs like Say Goodbye and the Harrison cover. I think Shut Us Down is a 4/4 beat, so nothing really that unusual from the pointview of time signatures.

i disagree. had SG not been done by fm already, yes, it might have fit perfectly. but lindsey gave it away. any number of his tango songs might have fit perfectly albeit stylized differently on ootc, but that didn't happen, and thank god for it because it was an album full of new tracks.

that was the point of my question. i don't want the exclusive if it's not a new version of the song. the soundstage version doesn't count as new to me, either. if lindsey and stevie got together and worked up a nice bit for this album, then hey, that's wonderful. but if it's just been tacked on there so barnes & noble could have their own set in some sort of sponsorship agreement.. then i'm not interested. i want it the way lindsey made it originally.

I'd love to have a discussion with you, but I totally can't follow you here. Since that is often the case, it's atricky path to go. This logic is impossible for me to follow: I love it in a context, I hate it in another and now you Love it again? The context hasn't changed! The same with say goodbye. I understand that you hate the studioversion, plinkaplink and so (very intelligent description by the way), I understand that you like the live version, it's VERY different from the original you dislike, but now you love the song again.   Sorry dude, but to me it sounds like total crap.

Put the doors open for Shut Us Down. The music and the vocallines meet eachother in a heartbreaking beautiful way. The tension is there in the fact that those two melodies derange and flow away from eachother, that makes the point where they meet again so friggin beautiful. Shut down judgement for five minutes and let it flow into you. Smoke a joint if you can't do it by yourself. That song is the best thing he ever recorded and I'm sure that there will be a bigger following a month (maybe two) from now.

Then within the context of 'Say You Will' it stuck out like a sore-thumb and I was turned off by it. I think that's a fair opinion.

Once I started listening to it OUT of context... in other words, on its own and not while listening to the rest of 'SYW'... I was more receptive to it again and fell in love with it.

As for my feelings for "Say Goodbye" live vs. the album version, there's a big difference between disliking a SONG and disliking a TRACK. I dislike "Say Goodbye" as a track (the production, the mixing, etc.), not as a song.
Easy enough to understand, I thought.

I think Shut Us Down is a 4/4 beat, so nothing really that unusual from the pointview of time signatures.

Actually it's a rather odd blending of two different 3/6's, depending on how where you perceive the beat. And the vocal rhythms on top of it are either pretty much random, or very intricately placed at unexpected places, and knowing Lindsey, I think we know which one it is! Unless I'm thinking too much about it and missing some greater, regular, 4/4 picture, it's one of his most rhythmically confusing songs.

i gotta admit, stew, when i first heard shut us down, i was like.. okay, this guitar work is amazing, but what's up with the raspy whisper? it took me a few listens - which isn't normal for me and lindsey, i might add - but then it clicked.

i love it, love it, love it and it makes perfect sense with the subject of the song. he sounds a little desperate but then suddenly strong, with conviction.

i'm proud of lindsey for doing it the way he did, which is kind of standing up for the belief that music doesn't have to be pretty. even from the heart. (cuz god knows the heart isn't always pretty.)

Well, whatever it is rhythmically, a fact is that after the "solo" everything comes together because then he plays that incredible line during I wont shut us down and the whole thing sticks together. Once you've clicked with that you can feel how the vocal dances with the instrumentation throughout the song.

(well, it can't hurt anything other than my lungs. those have been toast since jr. high anyway. :distress: )

but seriously.. like you said, the vocals match with the guitar work so well. if you think about it, if he sang it any other way, it'd just be too much. he had to make some room for the guitar work but let the words have some attention too. i think he pulled it off without a hitch, even if it does take some people a minute to warm up to. and that being said, i have to understand that some may never warm up to it, as unfortunate as that is imo.

like some people never warmed up to red rover.. i just don't get that at all, but to each their own, i guess.

I didn't say I loved "Red Rover" originally. I said I liked it.
Then within the context of 'Say You Will' it stuck out like a sore-thumb and I was turned off by it. I think that's a fair opinion.

All opinion is fair. But you like a song or you don't. That can change, especially with such weird songs, but what happened to you and Red Rover is hard to follow. I just still don't dig your logic, but then again I never will.

No. You needed the liveversion to hear the SONG in the track. (what the heck am I saying here.) Because you don't open up for the way lindsey writes these kind of songs. Now you hear the greatness of the song too in the original, but you stick to your judgement by blaming it on production. No prob, but admit it. By the way Lindsey's songwriting IS production. Do I need to explain things with an interesting metaphor about paint and canvas?

I've never smoked a joint in my life and don't plan on starting now, so I guess I'll just have to keep listening to it the old fashioned way... you know, without my mind being chemically altered.

Which, come to think of it, could explain why you think it's the best thing he's ever recorded! ;)

You obviously know nothing about the 100% unchemic, natural herbs I'm referring to. I smoke about 4 joints a year so believe me, I appreciate music without it. ( yes, I saw you were joking, but I'm Dutch, so the image is already there).

no, me neither. but it can't hurt.

well, sarah, the other side is that I'm selfish enough to like it that I'm with a happy few. He's ours. And I want to keep it that way, how hard I preach his name, it's enough when every now and then someone picks him up.

I just still don't dig your logic, but then again I never will.Maybe it's the language barrier... I don't know. I didn't think it was too hard to follow: I didn't say that I suddenly went from liking the song to hating it -- I said that when listening to "Red Rover" within the context of 'Say You Will' (INITIALLY) I was turned off by it.

But in listening to it on its own, I developed such a love for it that I now enjoy the song within the context of 'Say You Will.'

Ever get sick of a song that you initially liked, Gerald, but then you developed a new appreciation of it later? Well, that's what happened here.

No. You needed the liveversion to hear the SONG in the track. (what the heck am I saying here.) Because you don't open up for the way lindsey writes these kind of songs. Now you hear the greatness of the song too in the original, but you stick to your judgement by blaming it on production. No prob, but admit it. By the way Lindsey's songwriting IS production.Yes, but in this case... to my ears... the production did the song a disservice. There was something much better hidden within that fussy production, and once he approached it differently on stage -- and the song was allowed to breathe -- it took on a new life.

It didn't require a big change, mind you, but it made all the difference in the world.

(By the way, I was having so much fun debating all of this earlier that I was almost late for work!)

I don't know what kind of chemicals they are putting in the herb over there in the US, but in Amsterdam and other fine places, it's all natural, baby!

Actually it's a rather odd blending of two different 3/6's, depending on how where you perceive the beat.

As soon as I said 4/4, I knew someone was going to correct me. I thought about going to listen to the song to make sure, but I was too lazy :]
