Is there a way to dispute a limo deposit on a credit card? I reserved a limo last Friday and I called to ask if I could cancel it within like 15-20 minutes. The guy tells me no. Now, I have one chick on my back who won't stop b*tching about the cost (even though it's more than likely cheaper, she feels like the limo service that our hotel recommended is better...even though we don't know about any charges except it's $85 an hour...yeah, don't get me started today). Can the guy sue me for non-payment? I haven't signed anything obviously, and have not authorized any charges yet via email even though it looks as if the charges are taken out of my credit card balance. They aren't showing up as an official payment on my account yet though.
I emailed my credit card bank people to ask how to dispute a charge, but no word yet. I need to get this all settled one way or another soon. This limo is for next Friday, September 29th.
HELP Please!! :(

What a mess! I'm sorry, Christy!
First question, did you sign anything? Second - did you know up front that the deposit was non-refundable - like when you gave the guy your credit card number?
I would call the credit card company instead of e-mailing - and ask them about disputing the charge. And did you talk to a manager at the limo place? Maybe they'd be more accomodating?

I'm VERY nervous right now. LOL I just called Visa to dispute the charges. I never authorized anything and I even called to politely ask if I could cancel the limo mere minutes after getting it. I have emailed the guy TWICE to ask about the limo service and no word. I just wonder if he'll be calling me to ask about the disputed charges. I just want this thing to DIE already. I don't wanna get sued or anything.
I didn't sign anything because it was over the phone that I reserved the limo. He told me he'd email me to authorize the deposit charge and I just had to email back with authorization. I never said "Yes, those charges are fine." He did tell me the deposit was non-refundable, I think. That's why I'm nervous about this. Can they prove anything? Could he have taped the conversation without my knowledge?
I hate confrontation. Dammit.

I guess I am not understanding why this one B* has made you decide to cancel. Did you pick the limo company out of the yellow-book or what?

I got a phone call from them the other day because I had inquired about rates online. We already had a limo reserved through our hotel, but me being the jack*ss I am, wanted to find something cheaper. I emailed my friend who reserved the other and she goes "Book it, I'll cancel this other one." so I did.
Looking online, it seems most limo companies want you to sign a written contract (probably why he asked me if I had a fax machine). There is no contract, so I'm hoping that will work in my favor.

rates online She is the one who told you to book it! :distress: Do you have a link to their specific site or was it a general limo site?
I do not think you will have a problem disputing this charge. If they don't have a website, and you "inquired online" and then received a phone call and booked, I would think that would be easily disputable. Tell the bank/card company the truth...you put your name, number on a website for pricing inquiries, next thing you know this guy calls you, requests your credit card info, and when you realize he has charged a deposit that is non-refundable, you called the bank! Spice with dramatics...tell them you are terrified this person will harrass you, that you never signed anything, and that you are not sure if he told non-refun or not (you're not sure, right?)
Is this the first charge you have disputed? You shouldn't have any problem, expecially if you have had the card for a while. And, if you were to ask me, this guy sounds like a scam artist. Although I know a limo service is a sucky business with peeps canceling, he should be reasonable in letting you off the hook. Especially since you are a ledgie! p.s. I would ditch the bitch. I would also take any transpo possible than ride with that arse!

They do have a website, but there was nothing outlining their policies on it.
LOL The gal is very much the kind that wants things her way. Nice lady and she's a friend, but can be VERY bossy and annoying.
I am putting my trust in the fact I never signed any contract.
I called to cancel the thing mere minutes after booking it and he said no. I told him why and he wouldn't budge.

Christy...take me with you!!!! :]
EDIT: apparently I didn't tell you aggressively enough!
Christy..if you don't take me with you I won't be your friend...
and even if I am your friend I will make you book limos and
then tell you shouldn't.

Sounds like you have a really good case to dispute this charge. If you never gave your authorization, have no written policies on that company then I think you're good to go with a dispute.
And then the chippy who put you through this needs to buy you a big fat dinner for the trouble SHE caused :p

The charges officially showed up on my credit statement online today. I called them again and talked to a more inquisitive lady. I told her I didn't sign a contract and called mere minutes later to cancel. They are going to contact the merchant and probably call me back.
Since it was a deposit, do you think I can get that back? :( I seriously think I'm going to get screwed.

Well was there ever any e-mail authorization on either end? If not - then that's something - he said he'd e-mail you and authorization and you'd e-mail him back - if that exchange never happened you can use that.
You won't get sued - so don't worry about that one. What have the people at Visa told you? Or do they now need to get his side of the story?
Ugh - what a mess.

Yes, he emailed me to authorize the charges, but it was after I called to try to cancel the limo and he told me no. I emailed them questions about giving us a break on the extra hours twice and also emailed them to cancel the limo. No answer for any of those.
I guess they are getting his side of the story.
Mess is right. :(

If you don't get the deposit back - is it a large amount? You don't have to say - it really isn't any of my business I was just wondering...
Also - I hope that as their customer, and probably good customer they take your word over this guy's. I hope you can get this taken care of as soon as possible.

It was 30% of the total...$227. Good chunk of change.
This is on my very first credit card...with my local bank. A Visa card and I have never paid interest or had a late payment. I am their worst nightmare since I don't ever pay interest. LOL I hope that helps me too.

Whoa -that is a substantial chunk of change..I can fully understand why you'd want that back! And it's very unfair of the place to not budge when you called mere minutes after talking to them.
Sadly, the fact that you don't pay interest may not work for you - I hope that's not the case and that they treat you like a good customer - but my opinion of credit card companies is the devil.
of course - since they know that you won't pay interest on said charge - and therefore they don't have a lot to gain from i t- that may work in your favor. I don't know how the minds of the CC companies work - but I hope this all works out in your favor...and I think you should horse-whip that girl

If for some reason your bank doesn't support you, you can easily take your rage ;) out on the merchant by filing a complaint online at the better business bureau. The guy is a jerk...give me the number and I would be happy to tell him so around 2am in a week or so.
