I applaud the DC for speaking their minds. But, when you comment on something, you have to take what happens as a consequence. And - to their credit and despite the media blowing what she initially said WAY out of proportion and making her and them scapegoats - they stood by it and are finding a way to hang in there if not make money off of it.

I want to see it too!!
In that clip one of them said that the Red Cross refused to take $1 million bucks from them as a donation because George Bush was the honorable chairman or something like that...
It just makes me laugh at all the silly people in the US who vilified and continue to boycott them because of what they said and their views. How can you justify fighting for another countrys freedom in the world and their ability to have freedom of speech when you won't even allow that of your own country men without raking them over the coals - essentially scarying anyone else from speaking their mind because of reprocussions. God forbid they or anyone in the US has an opinion that isn't aligned with the current governement.

Natalie also says in the press conference that this would never happen in Canada. I never really thought about it before, but she's right.
The Chicks are playing like 8 cities in Canada and have added a second nite to some. I'm going to go see them in October when they're here.

me too. I stand by DC for speaking their mind...plain and simple. they can say whatever they want. I (or anyone else) don't have to like it or agree with it.
I saw a bit of them on Larry King last night. I love that they've made a documentary and I hope they make millions.
I also found it interesting that they are the biggest selling all-girl group of all time. beating Destiny's Chirrens and the Supremes and TLC and all that...

I've called both of the country stations in San Diego to request "I'm Not Ready To Make Nice" and they told me it wasn't on their play list. However, songs by drunk driving, wife beating, drug addict, spouse cheating country singers are  .
I'm not sure if their album was out in time for the CMA awards (they aren't nominated for anything) but I'd love the Grammy's to give them Country album of the year just to spite Country radio. Kind of like the year kd lang and Lyle Lovett were named Male and Female Country vocalists of the year

NBC Loves Bush, Hates the Dixie Chicks
Posted Oct 27th 2006 10:32AM by Kim Voynar
Filed under: Documentary, Independent, Celebrities and Controversy, The Weinstein Co., Movie Marketing, Politics
Here's your ironic story of the week, folks: According to a story from Reuters/Hollywood Reporter, The Weinstein Company (TWC) issued a press release late Thursday lambasting NBC for refusing to run an ad for the film Dixie Chicks: Shut Up and Sing!
The documentary tells about the period three years ago when the Chicks stirred up mountains of controversy after lead Chick Natalie Maines said during a London concert that the Chicks were ashamed President Bush is from Texas.
TWC also released documents that appeared to be from NBCs advertising standards division with handwritten remarks about the film having material that "disparges President Bush."
The release also went after the CW Network, which says it had concerns about having "appropriate programming in which to schedule this spot." Harvey Weinstein said in the release, "It's a sad commentary about the level of fear in our society that a movie about a group of courageous entertainers who were blacklisted for exercising their right of free speech is now itself being blacklisted by corporate America."
How hilariously ridiculous is it that NBC would refuse to run an ad for a movie that's about artists being censored for publicly stating a political opinion? What exactly where the thought processes going on around the Peacock nest about this? "Heck, Gene, we can't run ads that show these uppity womenfolk talking bad about the president, that's downright un-American." "Damn straight, Lloyd. Those mouthy bitches need to STFU. They're givin' my woman ... ideas."
Freedom of speech is one of the most precious rights we have, and those Weinsteins are certainly using their fair share with this release. Now exercise your own right to free speech: The networks have the right, of course, to air or not air what they want. But in this case, was it a completely stupid thing to do? And do you think Harvey Weinstein is legitmately self-righteous about the free speech issue, or is he wisely just taking advantage of a blustery way to call attention to the film?
The film opens today in New York and Los Angeles.

Personally, it should come down to the music by the Dixie Chicks, not the controversy or the doctumentary.
I have one of their release and I have only listened to it twice, too plain & average sounding to me (May have to do with the fact that there's plenty of country artists in my home state of Oklahoma who have the very same sound-Some even pre-dating the Dixie Chicks).

They are definitely not created by a producer in the studio. They aren't coming to San Diego and I'm not about to fight the LA traffic on a Friday night to see them at Staples Center.

The show totally rocked. We had 4th row on the side (Martie's side, blonde chick w/ fiddle/violin, hubby was in his glory, there's just something so incredibly sexy about a woman playing a violin). Excellent seats. It was right where the girls enter and exit the stage. We could have touched them if we hung over the railing. We sat right behind the sound board, we could see the guy tune all the instruments, man, do they play alot of instruments, these chicks are talented. We saw all the kids (they have 7 between them, 2 sets of twins) and the nannies. When the chicks left the stage before the encore and then came back, Nat and Emily were carrying their little ones and they didn't want to let go when they were trying to put them down. It was so cute. I'm not real familiar with their kids, but one little guy came out in his pull up diaper with his face all painted (for halloween). It was just adorable. I'm telling you, if you can ever get side seats close to the stage, you see everything. No big curtins hiding them from the crowd, like someone else we know  ).
They entered the stage to "Hail to the Chief" playing  They couldn't say enough about Canada. They said "It's good to be back in Canada, and that if the U.S. don't want them, they'll just keep coming back to Canada and filling hockey arena's. Funny but sad :distress: .
The crowd was insane. The floor and the stands never sat down once. It was a sold out show. They sounded awesome. Man, can Natalie sing!
Highlite of the show, "Not Ready to Make Nice". It was about the middle of the set and the first note played, and the crowd went f**ken crazy! I've been to alot of concerts but I have never experienced anything like this. After she sings the ending of the verse, where she says "Sayin’ that I better shut up and sing or my life will be over, the crowd erupted, the anticipation leading up to this part and the crowd's reaction, can't explain it. (I cried :o )
I wish I had taken a video camera, but because we were right at the front, the security was thick. Although they were allowing photo's but they were watching for video :distress: (a guy right behind us was hauled out for recording).
Anyhow, here's a clip from youtube that someone else posted from a show, it gives you an idea what it's like when she perform's this song, although our crowd was about a thousand times louder and at the end of song the cheering and screaming and pounding of chairs went on for about 5 mins. The girls were visiably emotionally touched.
Like the Chick's have been saying in interview's regarding this tour, it's a different crowd now (obviously), but it's like the crowd is there for a different reason. Not just to be entertained but to support them and really show their love for them. It was wierd. I can't explain it.

Review: "VH1 Storytellers-The Dixie Chicks"
Written By Rick Ellis, Saturday, October 28th, 2006
It seems to be impossible to separate the music of the Dixie Chicks from their politics in the minds of many people, which is a shame. Whether or not you agree with their thoughts on President Bush, it's difficult to imagine a band making better music.
It might seem a bit strange to describe an album which has sold a couple of million copies as being "overlooked," but the Chicks' recent "Taking The Long Way" might deserve the label. While it's been reasonably successful, in a better world, tracks like "Voice Inside My Head" would be flooding the airwaves of not just country but adult contemporary radio stations. Imagine the Eagles at their prime, and you get a sense of the untapped commercial potential of the album.
And like classic Seventies bands such as The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac, the Dixie Chicks are a true band, with three equally talented musicians. While lead singer Natalie Maines often seems to be the lightning rod for both the good and bad feelings people have about the band, both Emily Robison and Martie Maguire are also equal partners in the group.
Which makes VH1's latest edition of "Storytellers" even more intriguing than normal. With so many preconceived notions of the Dixie Chicks floating around among the non-fan music audience, the special is a good chance for the trio to remind viewers just what they're missing.
Overall, this "Storytellers" does a good job of cementing the Chicks reputation as one of the most talented and personable bands around. Longtime fans might be familiar with some of the stories behind the trio's earlier tunes, although they're told again with a charm that bears repeating.
Where the special shines is when it highlights tunes from "Taking The Long Way." To the surprise of some, the trio almost tosses off their explanation of the albums' incendiary response to critics with a short rundown of the struggles they had putting together "I'm Not Ready To Make Nice." Ultimately, Natalie Maines tells the audience that "unless you have a few hours to sit down and talk," the song is a good representation of how the band feels about their critics.
The highlight of the show is the emotional story behind "Silent House," a song inspired by Maines' grandmother, who suffered from Alzheimer's. Maines attempts to talk about the song, but asks for help telling the story. As it turns out, the song is filled with references to her grandmother's battle with the disease, and the resulting performance of the tune is heart-rending to watch. "Everything that you made by hand/Everything that you know by heart/I will try to connect/All the pieces you left/I will carry it all/And let you forget/And I'll remember the years/When your mind was clear/How the laughter and life/filled up this silent house"
And that song encapsulates what makes the special and the Dixie Chicks so vital and worth appreciating. It's hard to imagine a similar moment in a "Storytellers" from Nickleback or 5 For Fighting. The Dixie Chicks matter because their music matters--regardless of what you think of their politics.
"VH1 Storytellers: The Dixie Chicks" premieres on Saturday, October 28th, 2006

There was some chatting for some songs. Not like Storytellers though. Natalie did all the talking. The other two didn't say a word. Natalie said "the girl's don't like to talk. They said something once that got them in a whole lot of trouble" Natalie is very funny and always cracking jokes. She touched on some back stories for a few of the songs. The only problem was, where we were seated, we were actually behind the speakers, which was good for the music, not deafening loud, but not so good for Nat's speeches.
If you get a chance to see these girl's, you will not be dissapointed. They put on an awesome show. It's not quite the stage production that they had on the last tour, that Paula saw, but like I said before, it's not that kind of show. They have a huge screen behind them, with graphics of oil spilling down (like the video for NRTMN), and horses running for Cowboy Take Me Away, and kids playing and jumping for Wide Open Spaces. It was simple but beautiful.
I forgot to tell you. When they did Landslide (a crowd favourite) the whole audience sang it, word for word, it sounded beautiful. It was "extra" special for me. Stevie would have been proud
I haven't seen Storytellers yet. I don't get vh1 :distress:

The show totally rocked.
at the show.
The Dixie Chicks wont be playing OKC in the foreseeable future mainly to their actions on May 21,2003-In which they had their security goons toss fans who wore pro-Bush shirts to the show, Including tossing a couple of 10 yr old girls who were big DC fans but wore shirts in support of their Father who is a member of the US Air Force who was serving overseas (He is stationed at Tinker AFB in Midwest City-An OKC suburb) but the shirts mentioned nothing as being pro-Bush. Those incidents made TV headlines here and that caused me to lose any respect I had towards the D.C.'s
The D.C. actions caused a major backlash here in OKC, making them look very hypocritical in regards to free speech. So much that OKC country stations will not play any of their music - Thus the (supposed) poor ticket sales for their canceled Sept.26,2006 show.
None of the Anti-Bush remarks hurt 'em in OKC, but playing "prima-donnas" and asking the Ford Center to remove any/all ads which featured OKC resident (Ford Motor Company spokesman) Toby Keith or they would refuse to play was somewhat childish....Trust me, Pearl Jam slammed Bush way harder than the DC's EVER did, and PJ did it at the OKC show in 2003 (Which was released as part of the PJ "Official Bootleg" CD series - Funny **** too!!!)

I don't blame them one bit for any of that (they had death threats). Besides, you don't know how much any of this is true. It's all in how the media portrayed it. I'm sure that in your part of the country your news would only show the negative Chick stuff anyway.
As far as the redneck, I mean Toby Keith, he's the one that had this picture, up on the screen at his concerts, first. I can kinda see why the Chicks don't like him and why they would want his ugly mug removed from the venue
Now, Toby Keith has been quoted as saying "he's not sure if going into Iraq was the right thing to do and that we probably won't know for 20 or 30 years, why we really invaded them. Ah, duh.
I'm sure, if you ever get a chance to see this documentary, it will all be cleared up for you.

if I want to watch it, The whole statement they made got blown out of proportion to me. I still side with 'em over freedom of speech, but freedom of speech also runs both ways.
My opinion they just need to play music - simple as that, no doctumentary is going to change people's opinion on this whole overblown situation. Just play music & tour - cause in the end Bush wont be around and the DC's will (I still laugh at all the nitwits who burnt their CD's after the Anti-Bush comment, what a bunch of f-tards!)
As for Toby Keith, I dislike him - I don't give a **** if he is a local boy or not, Just another lame cog in the Nashville-lameass-what-is-considered-nowadays-as-country-music-industry (I recently quit watching CMT because I am disliking about 95% of what I hear of "modern country")

Exactly. It's the Bush lovers and the media that blew it all out of proportion, not the Chicks.

How stupid is that. I downloaded the concert on dimeadozen I told you about. It's a great show and I'll gladly burn you a copy if you'd like. I'll let you know if Toronto's show ever shows up.

I would love a copy of the Toronto show! Please let me know if one shows up. Thank you. If one doesn't eventually show up, I might take a copy of that Boston? show. I tried joining dimeadozen but it said it was full or something. Doesn't really matter, cause I wouldn't know what to do once I got on there anyway
Where do I go or who do I ask about a bootleg of the show on video. I was on one Chick message board but there was no mention of boots anywhere, and I didn't want to piss anybody off.
Some poor bastard got kicked out of the Toronto show for recording. DAMN

I belong to quite a few sites that offer bootlegs for downloading. I'll let you know if Toronto shows up. The Boston show was the first I've seen available from the new tour and it was just available yesterday and the concert was in July. If the Toronto show was at the Hummingbird Centre there are lots of shows taped at that venue so it may show up.

Toronto was at the Air Canada Centre (ACC). October 28th. I'll keep my fingers crossed and hopefully something will show up. Thanks.

Thanks for the great review Theresa! For those of you that download concerts, the audio from the Dixie Chicks show from Boston (July 29, 2006) is available on the dimeadozen website.
Cool! Thanks for the heads up... I shall be grabbing that one.
Wow! What a firestorm in that thead on DIME!

Country trio the DIXIE CHICKS have discovered a major plus from the fall-out after their anti-GEORGE W BUSH controversy - they've been embraced by gay men.
The group lost an army of fans after singer NATALIE MAINES famously criticised the US President during a 2003 concert in London, but they've started seeing more men at their shows.
Bandmate EMILY ROBISON says, "There are lots of gay men in the audience. I think they rightfully assume that if you're liberal on one issue, you're liberal across the board." Maines adds, "I feel we have a connection with them because we've felt discrimination. We now know what it's like to be hated for no reason, just because of who we are.
"There are way more men in general. We never really had men in our crowd or it always seemed as if they didn't want to be there - that they brought their girlfriends, thinking for doing that they were going to get laid afterward."

You know, she could be right. Before I dragged my husband to the Toronto show the other nite, I said to him, (as a joke), it takes a "real man" to go to a Dixie Chicks concert, honey you're going to stick out like a sore thumb. After the show, he said, there was lots of men there, what are you talking about? He was right. I saw alot of gay guys there and alot of hetero men.
Calling all gay men, is there any truth to this? Sorry, I'm on a Dixie Chick kick :o

I've always like the chicks, politics or not. Just because they are great musicians and I dig their music. But then, I am not a typical homo in my music taste. On the whole though, gay guys love tragic women martyrs, so it makes sense.

I never paid much attention to their music until recently. I think "Not Ready To Make Nice" is a gorgeous song and I drive everyone at my watering hole crazy by playing it over and over on the jukebox.
I'd like to see them in concert, but I'll be out of town when they're here.

There was a guy at the show wearing a t-shirt that said "CHICKS WITH DICKS" on the front and "NO BUSH" on the back. Natalie saw it and pointed it out and read it out loud. Very funny

I like Dixie Chicks, and thought they had a lot of courage. I'm very curious to see the documentary. It had wonderful reviews at Toronto Film Festival and probably will be distributed all over the world, at least on video. Besides one of the directors is the great Barbara Kopple (Wild man blues on Woody Allen was another of her gems). Word is she's going to have another Oscar nomination for this.

Theresa, did you see the documentary yet? Just curious how you liked it. It's not released here yet. I checked their website and there are quite a few replays of the VH1 Storytellers in the next few days. They perform tonight in Vancouver - should be quite a show now that the election is over.
I also saw this...On Nov 14, an expanded edition of “Taking the Long Way” will be released that includes the full studio album plus a bonus DVD including interviews with the Dixie Chicks and producer Rick Rubin, several live clips and the video for “Not Ready to Make Nice”.

Oh my god. How did I miss this post
To answer your first question, yes I did go and see the movie, but didn't want to post my review because I thought everyone might be "chicked out" (Curtis? :p ) but I just went and saw it the second time and I feel compelled to reply :D IT WAS EXCELLENT!!!! Ya'all must go and see it! It just shows you how silly the whole thing was. Yet how serious and real it all turned out to be. Did anyone see it? :o
I heard the Vancouver show was awesome. If you want any Chicks news, this is a awesome website and message board http://www.chicksrockchicksrule.com/
As far as the expanded cd, it's on my Christmas list

I read that "Shut Up and Sing" has made the cut for Academy Award consideration for Best Documentary. They narrowed the initial field from 88 films down to 15. Actual nominations are announced in January.

I know! Can you believe that? That is fricken awesome. It's so ironic, isn't it? There's also buzz about a Grammy. And all this with no radio play and promotion.
"Shut up and sing".... I wish they would.
I don't even care if they SING anymore. I'm not liking their new stuff at all. :distress:
