OK, I am going to be flying Delta (BLEH!) in October. I have not been on a plane in over a year and I don't know what I can and can't bring on the plane. Has anyone flown throughout the USA recently? I want to bring a carry-on bag but I might also bring a lap-top with me. Can I take them both on the plane? I plan on putting my small purse inside the carry-on bag.

My father-in-law is the Director of Security for the airport in my area. I will ask him later today what you can and can't bring.

I just flew last week. You can take laptops on the plane and you can have a carry-on bag (purse inside is fine).

The changes are you can't bring any liquids or gels through security. No water, toothpaste, yogurt. You can have a small amount of liquid medicine if your name is on the prescription, and a small amount of eye drops/contact solution.

jannieC should be able to get the full list. It's weird things like you can bring lipstick but not lip gloss (or maybe vice versa).

The worst part is you can buy water and other liquids once you get past security to drink before you board, but can't take them on the plane. I am used to drinking tons of water on planes to stay hydrated. Now I have to wait for the flight attendants to come around with those little glasses of water.

If they are going to keep these rules, then airlines need to sell bottles of water on the flights.

Ok thanks, that is good to know. I think that it is lip gloss that you can't take on the plane which is OK. I will just put that in with most of my toiletries and check it in the small roller bag that I have.
That stinks about the contact solution, too and I am going to bring a few extra packets of contact lens with me. I really hope that I can bring them in my carry-on bag. I can always get more solution but the lenses will be harder to replace.

Thanks, that would be great.

I'm on 6 - 10 flights a week and I don't know what's allowed on a day-to-day basis. The rules have been changing every couple days. Sometimes more lenient and sometimes more strict. The day before your flight, go to the Delta Airlines website (or any other airline's) and on the main page there will be a link to the TSA regulations to tell you what's OK at that particular time.

For the laptop - You can have one carry-on and one "personal item" which is a purse, laptop case, or small backpack. If you put the purse in the carry-on you'll be fine. If any segment of the trip is on a commuter plane (your itinerary will say "Operated by Comair" or "ASA" or "Delta Express") then your carry-on probably won't fit on the plane and you'll do a planeside drop. You leave it at the door of the plane when you board and pick it up at the door when you get off. Take your purse out of the carry-on when you drop it and bring it on the plane. The laptop will fit fine.

I have just e-mailed my FIL (because I seriously don't feel like talking to him on the phone right now). As soon as I get a response, I'll post it here. :)

Oh he's a big help:

"Have her go to tsa.gov, travel and consumer info gives all details, and check w/airline for how many bags they will allow as carry on."

Sorry I couldn't give more details.

Heeeey! I work for Delta! A small carry-on and and a laptop is ok... just make sure you don't have any liquids, gels, creams, etc. in your carry-on bag. What qualifies as a liquid, gel, cream, etc. is totally up to the TSA and seems to depend on the airport, individual agent, day of the week, etc. :distress:

The water thing is rediculous since having a bottle with you helps stave off jet lag. Ryan, you don't have to wait for the attendants, just go to the serving area yourself and get water. That is what I tend to do since they never give you enough water.

Are we still able to buy liquor or parfums at duty frees? Do they give the stuff at the airplane door or something like that? Cause buying liquid stuff just to be confiscated by TSA people would be unfair. I'm sure they have already thought about it but don't know how they are managing this issue.

Depends on which airport. Some of them have made arrangements for loading your stuff on the plane and they'll give it to you when you get to your destination.

I know Charlotte and Phoenix have this, but Boston doesn't (yet - everyone will probably get it eventually. There's no way they'll put the stores out of business.).

It's just a short-term issue anyway, they'll lift the ban before too long.

Here is what bothers me. I flew out of Boston last week and we were allowed to buy bottled water, but then we couldn't bring it on the plane. Why? Obviously, they just sold me the bottled water, so what could possibly be wrong with it?

Another thing that bothered was that they didn't pass out drinks for well over an hour on the flight home. I think they should have passed out bottled water so no one got overheated. Those planes can get stuffy and passing out bottled water before take-off would not take anytime at all.

Obviously safety comes first, but some of these rules are ridiculous. I think the airlines need to remember that we are actual customers and they should treat us like paying customers, not suspects. If they make us dump our bottled water at the door, then there should be fresh bottled water waiting for us in the plane...

Just my two cents.

What's to stop you from tampering the water from the time they sell it to you to the time you board the plane? Things slip through - it's a safety precaution. It may seem ridiculous to you and the rest of the traveling world - but that's just the world we live in now - those pesky terrorists are always thinking of something new.

I, for one, HATED when we had to start taking shoes off at the airport -now it's just common - this liquid/gels thing will probably be the same way

I don't mind the extra security at all. No big deal, it's just a minor inconvenience. I'd rather they be overly cautious than my plane blow up.

HEY! Does Ken know you're just helping yourself to the water?!?!
