yay!!!!!!! I can't believe I am actually a fan during this time, that I can personally witness all this.

I was too young for OOTC...at 14-15 I wouldn't have gotten that kind of music or cared...but now I can actualy be here and see the shows and read the reviews as it happens.

It's a great day to be a Lindsey fan!!

"...no particular desperation to carve out any sort of radio hit..."

That kind of sums up his ENTIRE solo career, doesn't it?

(Well, not counting "Trouble"...but that was an anomaly; still riding the crest of the Tusk tour wave of popularity)

Hmmm, most of those albums aren't must-haves in my book (bar Joanna Newsom, Beck, The Who and of course Lindsey).
Thanks for posting Brian.

I'd say these are the only "must haves". And, even Sean's album is "iffy".

Cool, Lindsey is rated above Bat Out Of Hell III (which I'm looking forward to a lot - though not as much!) which I thought would have been classed as a much bigger attraction.

Guitarist Buckingham has concocted the kind of defiantly personal work that cultists have no doubt been drooling for. Skin is characterized by drumlessness, intricate acoustic finger-picking, clearly autobiographical neuroticism, and no particular desperation to carve out any sort of radio hit — all of which add up to a surprisingly compelling (if decidedly left-of-center) new album.

how would you interpret the bold words in this context?

I also thought That compelling meant something like sensitive or emotional, but the addition of if decidedly left-of-center, makes me insecure. How would you read that?

I'm pfffttt-ing at the word....surprisingly. Lindsey has ALWAYS been compelling. Whatev. He's always been left of center too. He is not your average run-of-the-mill pop star who sings "I'm bringing sexy back." I despise that song, btw.

Yahoo dictionary's definition of compelling: Drivingly forceful: compelling ambition and egotism.

Yep, that's our Lindsey. ;)

Okay..hmm and defiantly personal work? I even found the synonime "perversely".

Left of centre isn't a bad thing. They're just saying it's compelling, but not exactly your run-of-the-mill pop album. Sounds like a good review to me. :)

But now help me interpret the review. it's not the simplest review for a nonnativespeaker. I understand what it says, but cannot grab the subtle meanings.

Well so far we know of shut us down, down on rodeo and I am waiting that are Finger-picked so out of the other 4 songs we've not heard of it I'm hopefull a couple will be "shut us down-ish", then that would make it the perfect album for me.

I've been thinking quite a lot about it and all the songs we've heard "show you how", "Cast away dreams", "Shut us down", "Down on Rodeo", "Someone's Gotta Change Your Mind " and "It was you" all seem to fit together perfectly where as "I am waiting" would stick out like a sore thumb don't you think? The soundstage version has got to be one of my all time favourite songs but do you think the album version will be more like the small clip on "destiny rules"?

I'm amazed at how much attention this album is getting. Considering the record label have done NO promotion whatsoever, the album seems to be promoting itself.

shackin'up
09-17-2006, 04:39 PM
you can add "try for the sun", too, or have you not heard that one?

BTW, I totally agree on the Shut us Down-ishness, although I also hope for strummers.
Does it promote itself? or basicly on the ledge....?

i bet lindsey died and went to heaven when he read the writer thought his album was left-of-center. i'm loving the picture.

oh, and i'm thrilled you know who joanna newsom is. at first, i found her voice irritating but the more i listened, the more i loved her. peach, plum, pear is one of my favorite songs.

It doesn't seem so subtle to me. The reviewer thinks Lindsey has a created the kind of music that he wanted and the reviewer finds that left-of-center (e.g. the opposite of mainstream.)

How's that?

Joanna Newsom is fantastic  Her voice definitely take a while to get used to, but she certainly doesn't sound like anyone else out there. Her new album is supposed to be incredible. It only has five or six songs on it and some are 10 or 15 minutes long! Should be interesting anyway!

I think "left of center" in this case the author meant it as positive. Lindsey does well with the press with his solo album, as I remember. Ledge Blue letters archives have examples. But the Lindsey's problem is not press, but the public. Who's will buy this? I think plenty of reviews when Out of Cradle came out but record only sold 40,000 units or something like that.
