From Ask Billboard, September 14:
GREAT BUCKINGHAM
Hi Keith,
I'm really excited about Lindsey Buckingham's new CD, "Under the Skin," set for release on Oct. 3. I also heard that Rhino Records may be issuing a best-of CD for Stevie Nicks on Nov. 7. Can you tell me more about this release?
Thanks,
Daniel Matsumoto
Hello Daniel,
Another Nicks fan, Joe Becker, also wrote in about this supposed Nicks greatest hits set. While the album can be found at Amazon.com –- and you can even pre-order it -– it is not going to be released at this time.
Rhino Records told me that while there had been discussions regarding the album, it is no longer on the release schedule.
Nicks' first greatest hits album, "Timespace – The Best of Stevie Nicks," was released in 1991 and has sold 1.5 million in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Since that 1991 collection, she has issued two solo studio efforts –- 1994's "Street Angel" and 2001's "Trouble In Shangri-La."

I don't see what is "bad news" about a CD that will be redundant to most people's collection. Between Timespace and the Enchanted box, another "Best Of" is just unnecessary. And, since the box set, she's only released Trouble In Shangri-La.

It is frustrating that the carrot keeps getting dangled. I knew something was up when Rhino's sister site OnlyHitMusic.com removed the best-of listing a few days ago. Granted, it is only a best-of CD, but I would have been happy with some remastered tracks from her earlier catalog, Nightbird in particular. Oh well. Bring on Lindsey! :woohoo:

That is a more appropriate comment for the Fleetwood Mac catalogue remaster project. Either "Git'er done" or just F-off.

No, because Rhino keeps saying they will release this Best Of CD and creating excitment for something that is never going to be...so it fits for this situation IMO.

So the "news" is that there is no news. Bummer.
I don't see what is "bad news" about a CD that will be redundant to most people's collection. :shrug:Well, being a Rhino release, the potential was there for some of the single edits/mixes to make their debut on CD, much like "Rhiannon," et al., on 'The Very Best of Fleetwood Mac"... so for that reason it's bad news.

The key word being "potential". I realize that people will just crap their drawers if one slight EQ setting is different than the original release, but c'mon.
It is this whole attitude that KEEPS our beloved Mac members from DOING anything new...after all, why should they go through the pain & sweat of coming up with new material if all they have to do is keep changing the mix of songs they recorded decades ago and releasing them on supposed "Best of" & "Greatest Hits" CD and people will go "homicidal" about acquiring them?

I follow Tina Turner, and there have been many releases over the years that are scheduled to come out and are then either re-scheduled two and three times or cancelled altogether.
Same happens with Madonna. Same happens with Heart. Same happens with every artist.
It's the nature of the mercurial music business, I'm afraid, and Stevie releases are no exception.

If Mac wants to create new music, there's nothing stopping them from recording a new album. They live in their own world. They probably don't have the slightest clue about how obsessively we discuss such things here. :D

Yeah, but Stevie has released ONE new album TISL (from 1994 thru 2006) in 12 years and Fleetwood mac ONE album SYW in 15 (from 1991 thru 2006).

Our attitude doesn't have anything to do with what the band releases or doesn't release.
"Best of" sets are typically a contractual thing... in fact, if I remember correctly (and maybe Daniel can help me out here), I recall Stevie saying that she really didn't want to do 'Timespace,' because she felt it was too soon to be doing a retrospective. But since it was a contractual thing that she couldn't get out of, she decided she'd better make the best of it, by selecting the songs herself, writing the liner notes herself and by recording some new songs.

and according to her ..in retrospect the '"new songs" were the worst part of the deal .I believe she said something to the effect that the record execs told her that if she didn't record the Poison and Bon Jovi ditties her 'career would be over' and in her Klonopin induced stupor she apparently bought it since there the duds sit.

The utter lack of new studio material from Stevie and the band over the past 16 years has been maddening. In Stevie's situation, I blame most of that on her stubborn insistence on touring after every single release (even compilations and boxed-sets!).

True. But some Stevie is better than no Stevie at all :)
I dont see it that way at all. If some Stevie is all songs we already have, then thats pretty much no stevie, with a new album cover, and a chance for the record company to make some money off us. So really, to me this is a good thing. I dont feel like getting a pointless release. If there was even one new song scheduled to be on it, then i'd probably change my mind, but there wasnt.

In regards to the "Best of"... maybe the fact that it's been pulled is a sign that they're working on something different? I know many of us were hoping for a live CD from the Australian tour.
Quite frankly though... and I see that myself and Daniel are outnumbered on this... but I was looking forward to this release, even if it didn't contain any new songs. There hasn't been a new Stevie Nicks release to purchase in five years, so I definitely would have preferred having this "best of" to the alternative -- which is having diddly-squat.

I don't think we, the hard core fans, are the ones really targeted by the record company when deciding if and when to put these "Best of" packages out there. Of course that's a little off when a new track(s) is thrown on the disc - then you know they are trying to get your attention. For the most part they are probably trying to attact someone that may not want to buy the whole back catelogue of material just to get the choice cuts from her career.

This was gonna be a waste of time and money anyway.
I wouldn't have bought it.
If anyone wants something cool, here's an idea :
Take your favorite downloads, b-sides, and other rarities, and burn them on a cd. In the order YOU want. Then, with his permission, take a few of Jazzy's unbelievably cool sig creations and make your own cover and insert art. Anyone with photoshop, 30 minutes, and Jazzy's art can probably make something better than the lame assed in house art directors they use at the label. It'll be head and shoulders above anything WB/Reprise/Rhino is gonna crank out. We have access to more rare things than they do anyway.
And you'll have the satisfaction of having made something cool.
We could have a contest.

I've been a Dream Theater fan since 1992, and since that time they have released 13 albums on Warner related labels (7 studio albums, 4 live albums & 2 EP's-Also 5 DVD's), While independently releasing fan-club only CD releases from 1996-2004 as Christmas gifts for the fans.
Not to mention DT releasing 12 discs/2 DVD's "bootleg recordings" (For us diehard fans, Consisting of full length concerts, studio demo/outtakes & covering their favorite albums by classic bands) on their own label ytsejamrecords.com
I sometimes wish FM/LB/SN/etc. could put out material at a similar pace, but each time I hear the skuttlebutt that they may release an album I become very skeptical/cynical.

I wanted clear, clean digital sources.
Ah well.

Maybe Rhino are pushing it back because they want to release it in sync with A new Stevie album that is being recorded :thumbsup:There are any number of reasons why it may have been cancelled/delayed. Stevie mentioned last year the possibility of her back catalog being remastered and expanded in much the same way as Fleetwood Mac's late-70s albums -- so it's possible that Rhino is working on something like that, and this compilation was going to coincide with those releases.
It's also possible that, if the murmurings about a 2007 Mac tour are true, they decided to hold it off until then -- to strike while the iron is hot.
I was also going to suggest that perhaps it was delayed because Stevie would still like to record something new for it -- but she's had a year to do so since the "best of" was first proposed. Surely, she would've had time to record something since then, if she wanted to.

I was pretty skeptical and would remain so until I saw an official track listing and our girl doing press for the new record, so I'm not terribly surprised or disappointed.
Having said that, if the new "best of" CD is a retread of all her older material, what's the point of releasing it unless it's got some stuff that didn't make Enchanted or several Trouble in Shangri-la tracks? Or even some of her Say You Will work and a new song or three?
Let's face reality: Stevie Nicks is now what you'd describe as an oldies act and she will be unless she gets a fire lit under her fanny and records new albums at least once every 18 months or so. Even then, she'd have to get radio play or some intense MySpace promotion for the output to be anything more than just grasping for straws. Tom Petty got a lot of mileage out of MySpace for his Highway Companion CD and the song "Saving Grace."

I can't figure out why so many people equate a "best of" with becoming an oldies act. Aerosmith has tons of "best ofs." So does Blondie. REM has three, I believe. Tina Turner has three and a boxed-set. Springsteen has two and a boxed-set. Even Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers have two "best ofs" and a boxed-set.
It's just standard business.

Springsteen's last hurrah was in 1984.

I can't get all worked up either way about a Best Of. It does make me think, "What, she doesn't even want to release a lame 'greatest hits' package? How dull can she possibly be?" I don't think she'll ever release another album of new material. Like I've said before, I still enjoy her music from time to time, and Bella Donna will always be one of my favorite albums...but I think my fanboy energy is best expended elsewhere.

I DON'T equate a "best of" with becoming an oldies act. I'm looking at the fact that Stevie Nicks has released exactly two CDs of brand new mateiral since 1991. That year, she released Timespace. In 1994, she released Street Angel. Four years later, she released Enchanted. Three years later, she released Trouble in Shangri-la. The fact that she's so rarely released a full CD of brand new material makes her an oldies act, not the fact that she has greatest hits and a boxed set.
Aerosmith continued to release new material and somehow stay relevant. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have released some new material. So has Tom Petty solo. Tina Turner has effectively retired from the music business to live in Europe. REM still records somewhat occasionally. Even Blondie has released a couple of new albums since they came back from their 16 year layoff from being a band.
It's time to face reality. If Stevie WEREN'T an oldies act, she'd have had at least one new song to offer on The Today Show. What does she give us? "Dreams" (yawn), "Landslide" (DOUBLE YAWN) and "Stand Back" (which lacked the sizzle it had in the past. In fact, that was exactly ONE solo song, and even that song is one Fleetwood Mac uses in its tours when she's with them!

This would be my single disc version. All trakcs would be remastered. And when I say "ALTERNATE MIX".. I mean the songs re- mixed just for this compilation, so we DONT get the same EXACT version of the songs we already have. And I didn't include a new Stevie song.. since I doubt Stevie would record a new one. If she would, "Mirror, Mirror" goes... :(

Grow up, grandma- everything you've cited is a dinosaur "greatest-hits-money-grab" blah, blah, blah, blah....
Springsteen's last hurrah was in 1984.
REM's last hurrah was in 1990.
Tom Petty and Tina Turner haven't been in the limelight in a long time.
Blondie's last deal was 1979.
Oy.Turn up your Miracle-Ear, Myrtle! ;) Aerosmith, Blondie, Springsteen, REM and Tom Petty are all still recording... the latter four getting some of the best reviews of their careers.
Tina Turner is "semi-retired," but is also working on an album of new material.
If we're going to equate "oldies act" with the last time an artist had a big chart hit, then the aforementioned should all just pack it in and hang out at the retirement home with Eddie Money and Tiffany. :p

I have a bit of a pet peeve with it. Growing up and to this day my dad only listens to "oldies" radio stations (50's and 60's music) and I can't stand it so it's just wrong for me to tell myself I'm a fan of oldies music. Stevie is far from my definition of oldies but to each is own.

This whole discussion is pointless. La Nicks has been singing as a star since like 1974-75. Of course she must include somne of those hits in her repetoire and she does. Does that make her an odlies act? Not in my opinion. I base this on the Gold Dust Tour where she included Circle Dance and Rock and Roll in the set. Those are not her songs and she never did them before. So, in a tour with no record to support, she sang two different things she never sang before (not to mention SYWBARRS with Don H. ) -- So, the facts suggest that while she has over 30 years of material to chose from, she adds different songs to each tour set and those songs are not her hits and/or even her material.
But, people will call her what they want no matter the facts. So be it.

About a decade ago, I predicted to all of my friends that one day in the next 15-20 years we would all be listening to oldies stations too. Just because no other station would be playing music we liked. And, most of my pals are now listening to "classic rock" stations, as that is where the music they like gets played. And that is oldies by another name. I don't listen to radio much at all (other than NPR) but that's where Stevie/Mac get almost all of their airplay.

I am a real fan. I am also a realist. I also speak my mind whether you like it or not. I'm not some mindless drone who can listen to Stevie sing the phone book half assed and think it's brilliant when it's not.
When Stevie does well, I say so. When she sucks it, I say so. I was downright giddy over her rendition of "Woodstock" because she sang it with more fire under her than she has sung much of anything in a while.

I agree. Stevie has done her fair share of crap over the years. I can't stand 65% of Rock a Little and her stuff on tango other than Seven Wonders leaves a lot to be desired. I think Paper Doll deserved to get higher than 103 lol. However, I disagree on the oldies part. I'm 16!!! My mate Hannah who got me into Stevie is 16!! I know loads of younger fans. I think as long as Stevie keeps releasing and touring and...basically keeps active, she won't be an oldies act. An oldies act is someone who is no longer around anymore and who are remembered for the "classics". I think in years to come the fans will remember "Trouble in Shangri-La" as much as "Bella Donna" or even "Rumours". Stevie still has a lot left in her and she has moved with the times. So SSSHHHUUUUUDDDDDAAAAAAPPPPP!!!

An oldies act is someone who is no longer around anymore and who are remembered for the "classics".
My definition of an oldies act is slightly different. It's someone who's relying on the old hits only and touring endlessly with them - without even making the smallest effort to come up with something new. That's why I personally wouldn't put the Rolling Stones, Tina Turner or Paul McCartney into that category. Of course people go to their concerts to hear the big hits, but at least they always have new material to offer and they tour on the back of that *new* material. I'm sorry to say that Stevie currently isn't in that group. She doesn't have to put out an album every year (no one does that anymore anyway) but she doesn't even introduce ONE new song on her seemingly endless tours which have taken place over the last couple of years in the US.
Hell, even Paul "I'll play Hey Jude yet another time" McCartney took the opportunity at Glastonbury Festival to introduce a new song from his latest album way before it was released to give the audience something else but only the hits and also to test the audience's reaction to the track.
Oh and her US tours are another point - of course she's touring only there with her collection of old material, that's where the big money is. In Europe she'd probably be forced to play in small clubs with a setlist and ticket prices like that. That's why she never shows up here anyway. As much as I love Stevie's music, but these days she seems to be an oldies act indeed - just because she doesn't have to play in front of supermarkets and fairs (unlike other oldies acts) doesn't make it any better. Let's say she's an oldies act deluxe (because of the crowds she admittedly still draws)
Stevie should take a look at someone like Marianne Faithfull. A 60-year-old woman who's gone to hell and back and is not even thinking about looking back musically and personally all the time. She's moving forward - that's artistic integrity in my opinion.
But like I said, this is MY understanding of an oldies act. Playing all the hits in your show is one thing, touring endlessly with them and apparently not even bothering to give the fans something new for the expensive tickets they've paid is another thing. But that's everyone's personal decision.
Johnny Stew

(Stevie) doesn't have to put out an album every year (no one does that anymore anyway) but she doesn't even introduce ONE new song on her seemingly endless tours which have taken place over the last couple of years in the US. You know I love ya, Maik, but that's not entirely accurate.
In the earlier part of 2005, in Vegas, she may not have sung anything new, (though she did perform "If Anyone Falls" and "Beauty And The Beast," which hadn't been done on stage in 14 years, and "How Still My Love," which hadn't been performed in 16 years), but during her summer tour, Stevie performed "So You Wanna Be A Rock & Roll Star" (for the first month of shows), "Rock & Roll" and "Circle Dance"... three songs that she's never performed in concert.
I don't think that's too bad for a somewhat impromptu tour.
You know how I feel about all of this anyway... I wish she'd just retire from the road altogether and concentrate on recording.

:woohoo:

Trust me, I know where you're coming from. The utter lack of new studio material from Stevie and the band over the past 16 years has been maddening. In Stevie's situation, I blame most of that on her stubborn insistence on touring after every single release (even compilations and boxed-sets!).
I've often wished I was a Jimmy Buffett fan, as it seems he ****s out a new album every single year.

I pretty much made my peace with the paucity of material years ago. I became a fan shortly before the "lean years" began, so I'm used to it.
Plus, I still have all of those amazing older songs to listen to... the ones that made me a fan to begin with.
It's kind of like sitting down with a favorite book... I don't need new chapters to keep me interested. I keep re-reading and revisiting it because I find something new to appreciate every time. And it's the same way for me with Stevie's songs.
Mind you, I'm not saying that I don't want new songs from Stevie. I always want new songs from Stevie and could never have too many, and I think if she would stop touring incessantly, she would actually release new music more often.

Do you ever just put it all away though?Never.
I might go a while without listening to albums in their entirety, but a day rarely goes by without me listening to at least a handful of Stevie tunes.
Even when I'm on a jag for one artist, and listening to, say, Chris Isaak constantly, I still always play some Stevie, too.
It really is a strange phenomenon... of all the many artists I'm a fan of, Stevie really is the only one whose music I never get sick of or burned out on. For example, a while back I listened to so much freakin' Tom Petty... morning, noon and night... that I completely burned myself out on him for a solid two years.
That's happened with all of my favorites, at one time or another... but, in 20 years of being a fan, it's never happened with Stevie. Go figure.
But I can understand why other fans sometimes have to walk away from Stevie's music for a while.

Count me in too! Given I've only been a die hard since 2003 so things aren't as old and tired to me as they may be to some people. I even go through periods of a month or two where I purposely don't play any Stevie/FM music because I get bored but then one day out of nowhere she'll creep up on me and I'll have the urge to hear that voice. I hope the day never comes where I'm completely bored and never want to go back. She's kind of like an ex-lover but one you never have to completely break from, you can just keep going back whenever you want but it's not at anyone else's expense.
That being said I'm thrilled she's doing something, anything, even if it is solely touring. If that's what she has to do to keep herself happy and she's still enjoying it, more power to her. Sure I'd LOVE new recordings (since I've become a fan she has yet to put anything new out) but it doesn't seem like that is an option right now so I'll take seeing her live every year for as many years as she's willing to tour.

You know how I feel about all of this anyway... I wish she'd just retire from the road altogether and concentrate on recording.
I agree with you there.
In the earlier part of 2005, in Vegas, she may not have sung anything new, (though she did perform "If Anyone Falls" and "Beauty And The Beast," which hadn't been done on stage in 14 years, and "How Still My Love," which hadn't been performed in 16 years),
"If Anyone Falls" was okay. "Beauty and the Beast" was fantastic. "How Still My Love" was flat. However, all three of these were nothing to compared to what was alluded to: "The Highwayman", "Talk to Me", etc...
but during her summer tour, Stevie performed "So You Wanna Be A Rock & Roll Star" (for the first month of shows), "Rock & Roll" and "Circle Dance"... three songs that she's never performed in concert.
I don't think that's too bad for a somewhat impromptu tour.
Three covers do zippo for me. I would much rather have three never-before-performed-live songs or brand new ones. Especially considering that the tours did not accompany any new releases or other related materials.

Do you ever just put it all away though? Sometimes I have to. I go on sabatical from it all. Then I unearth the music after a few months and it becomes magical again.
I do. I cannot even listen to Bella Donna, Wild Heart, RAL, OSOTM, SA!
I am too burned out on them. I only listen to Say You Will & TISL....

I listened to a Stevie mix CD in the car the other day. That was the first time I'd listened to her in ages. Part of it is that I'm really getting away from listening to pop/rock music in general. Part of it is that I realized she's not the "artiste" I thought she was when I first discovered her, and that pissed me off.

Yeah, they're usually quick to add listings. But not so quick to update it when the info changes.
