The coroner investigating the death of Anna Nicole Smith's son Daniel on Sunday tells TMZ that Daniel died of unnatural causes. "We do know the cause of death," says Her Majesty's Coroner, Linda T. Virgill. "But we wish to reserve publishing the cause of death pending the toxicologist's report." Virgill adds that her office will be releasing the results of the report and cause of death Thursday.

I don't think anyone is seriously talking murder. My understanding is he was in the room and started convulsing or acting in a strange manner while sleeping. Anna N. got out of bed and tried to help him. The other person in the room (rumored to be her lawyer Howard Stern) was also trying to help and Anna N. became hysterical and started blaming him. After about 22 minutes of trying to revive the boy, he was pronounced dead.
Murder just does not seem to fit those "facts."

If the third person in the room was Howard Stern, which I doubt because he was seen rushing to the hospital AFTER Daniel died according to a Today show reporter, I will have a hard time believing he killed Anna's son. He was so close to Daniel and Anna and what could possibly be the motive? I guess anything is possible though. :( I feel so bad for Anna...she has had a pretty ****ty life and moved to the Bahamas permanently to get away from BS. Then her son dies mysteriously. Man, its so sad. Between this and Steve Irwin, plus 9/11, the last two weeks have been sad for me.

Anna's mystery guest
Inquest set in son's 'suspicious' death
BY MICHELLE CARUSO
DAILY NEWS WEST COAST BUREAU CHIEF
Anna Nicole Smith
The mystery shrouding the death of Anna Nicole Smith's son heightened yesterday as Bahamian authorities called it "suspicious" and confirmed a third person was in the room when the 20-year-old dropped dead.
Coroner Linda Virgill ordered an inquest next month to determine how Daniel Smith died and who may be responsible. It could lead to criminal charges.
Daniel Smith died Sunday morning in his 38-year-old mom's maternity ward room at Doctors Hospital in Nassau, the Bahamas, three days after she gave birth to a girl.
The coroner's move followed a bombshell report in The Tribune, a Bahamian newspaper, that other hospital patients overheard Anna Nicole Smith "screaming loudly and blaming someone" for her son's collapse about 9 a.m. - 38 minutes before hospital officials say a nurse was called to the room and attempts were made to revive Daniel.
The ex-reality show star was heard screaming, "You caused this!" to the third person who was present in the room, The Tribune reported.
Police and the coroner refused to identify the third person in the former Playboy model's room, but they said it was not a member of the hospital's staff.
The person was "a male" described as a "boyfriend" of Anna Nicole Smith's, a Bahamian source told the Daily News, but it was not her ex-flame Larry Birkhead, who says he is the father of her baby.
But Michael Scott, an attorney for Anna Nicole Smith, said the third person in the hospital room was Howard K. Stern, another Smith lawyer.
Scott said both Stern and Anna Nicole tried desperately to revive Daniel, even after doctors had pronounced him dead. The bereaved mother was so distraught that she had to be sedated, Scott said.
"The devastation and grief over Daniel's sudden death coupled with the sedation has been so extreme that Anna Nicole experienced memory loss of the event," he said.
Stern could not be reached for comment.
A possible overdose was suspected in Daniel Smith's death, sources said. But no illegal drugs or paraphernalia were found on his body or at the scene, according to Reginald Ferguson, assistant commissioner of the Royal Bahamian Police Force.
The body had no apparent physical injuries, and an autopsy ruled out heart attack and other natural causes of death, Virgill said.
Toxicology reports, which would show any levels of drugs, alcohol or toxins in the body, will not be released until the inquest, which is set to begin Oct. 23, Virgill said. During the inquest, witnesses - including Anna Nicole Smith - will testify in court under oath before a jury.
If the jury finds that a crime took place, the case will be referred to the attorney general for possible prosecution, authorities said.

I hope this isn't true. 38 minutes is a long time to wait to request medical assistance anywhere, never mind in a hospital!

FROM GAWKER: Fire Sale: Anna Nicole Smith's Last Moments With Her Son
Before all the inevitably ugly details surrounding the death of Anna Nicole Smith's son, Daniel -- who was found dead in Anna Nicole's hospital room on Sunday morning, just three days after she gave birth to her new daughter -- emerge with the autopsy and toxicology reports, why not cash in? Getty Images has sent an email to celebrity weekly editors saying they have 17 pictures of Anna Nicole, Daniel and the new baby, taken in the hospital the day before Daniel died. Preview images show Anna Nicole and Daniel in the hospital bed, with Daniel smiling and holding the baby; Daniel standing up, cradling the baby; and Anna Nicole holding the baby while her lawyer and BFF, Howard K. Stern, leans in with them.
How much might one pay for these tender, macabre moments? Getty is asking for $200K, but the email has a disclaimer of "NO NEGATIVE PRESS." For that, you've got to drop an extra hundred grand.
Update: We're hearing that Life & Style won a bidding war, shelling out $375K for the pics. Who knew the mag even had that kind of money?

From PerezHilton.com
Anna Nicole Smith's son had been in and out of the hospital for a month before his sudden death on September 10th, In Touch Weekly reports in their new issue.
Daniel Smith, 20, had been in intensive care for an elevated heart rate, reports the mag.
"He was in the hospital for two or three days," says a family friend. "He was really sick. He lost something like 28 pounds and had a constant stomachache."
According to the insider, Daniel had seemed to have recovered but was still not fully fit when he flew to the Bahamas to be with his mother after she gave birth to a little girl on September 7th. He died three days later.
Additionally, Daniel had prescriptions for both the insomnia drug Ambien and the antidepressant Lexapro for two months, reports In Touch.
One theory is that the buildup over the weeks of that combo of prescription meds could have been just too much for the fragile body of Anna's son to handle. Pharmacist Jennifer Athay tells In Touch a cocktail of the two drugs can be fatal. "There are cases where people have died," she says.
Dr. Cyril Wecht, the pathologist brought in by Anna Nicole to conduct a second autopsy, says Daniel's depression "had to do with a girlfriend."
This story gets sadder and weirder ever day!

She has decided to name the child danni lynn hope rather than hannah. When he gave the details of the evening Daniel died it was very painful on this end...such a tragedy no mother should have to endure.
He set to rest a rumours...such as the vomiting/blood etc in the room (not true)...
The only comment I have found odd thus far, though he is obviously in distress at the moment, was when Howard said that Daniel offered Howard the other bed next to Anna because Daniel said he wasn't tired...yet soonafter Daniel stated "why am I so tired?"
Anyway...it is my hope the media blitz soon ends and they are allowed the privacy they need to grieve.

That was a something I did not see coming. Howard is the baby's daddy and her long time lover. Interesting.
I feel bad for them both, the pain was all over his face. I really hope Anna can get over this...she seems so fragile to begin with. I am undecided if I like the name..DannieLynn Hope. Its sweet but also a constant reminder that when she was born, her brother died. Sorry I missed the show, I was snoozing... but thanks for posting the update. I'm kind of shocked too, about Howard. I used to watch the Anna Nicole Show and she treated him like a DOG! Was that real or was that acting?
The thought has crossed my mind more than once whether Daniel's life with Anna was too much for HIS fragile being, so much that the birth of the baby was just too much for him and he expired. Didn't he have an underlying heart condition? I'm thinking it sounded like he had superventricular arrythmia is why he was hospitalized just prior to the baby being born. Didn't sound like he was on any medication for that and he should have been. My daughter has it and is on meds. When she runs out she has to be really calm and quiet, no stress or her heart will race. She's been to the ER once. Some people's lives are so wrought with distress, it's really sad.:distress:

Howard sort of denied Daniel had a heart condition. He claimed Daniel was hospitalized for about a week, the month prior to his death, for severe back pain and depression. He left the hospital with a script for Alexapro?, which is an antidepressant. So, I am not sure the reports that he had a heart condition were even accurate. I think Cyril Wecht did a second autopsy on the body and has come forward to say there was nothing wrong with his heart. I think they are still awaiting some test results though, especially toxicology.
Howard did look like he had aged so dramatically in the last two weeks....he seemed so drained and almost hopeless.

Somethings fishy here? I'm not convinced he's the father. Him and Nicole may have decided to claim this for some reason. I haven't figured out why yet but Nicole is just wacky enough to do this. Howard is so close to Nicole and the baby and she kicked the other dude out of her life, so this will be better for her and the baby if Howard is the father. What really convinced me last nite in the interview was when Larry asked Howard "what's it like being a new dad?", Howards expression never even changed for a second. I mean he didn't even crack a smile. New dads faces usually light up when asked about their newborns. I know he is very distraught about Daniel but Daniel was not even his son. So I thought he might seem a little bit happy about his new daughter

This story has more twists and turns then most TV shows. I hope things turn out for Anna and her baby. I don't think it makes a difference in Howard's grief just because Daniel isn't his kid. If you watched the E show, you could see just how big a part Howard was in Anna's life, and in turn Daniel's. Do parents of adopted children grieve less because they're not their natural children? In the same respect, if he IS in a relationship with Anna, then I can imagine that he's trashed not just by Daniel's death but by Anna's situation. It seems to be completely overwhelming.
I was shocked to read this this morning! I've always liked Anna and her crazy, and always was glad that it seemed like someone was looking out for her.

The death of Anna Nicole Smith's 20-year-old son Daniel was caused by a lethal combination of methadone, Zoloft and Lexapro, pathologist Cyril Wecht has revealed to PEOPLE exclusively.
Wecht said the drugs caused the cardiac dysrhythmia that led to Daniel's death. Wecht got the toxicology results from National Medical Services in Willow Grove, Pa., today.
Daniel Smith died in his mother's hospital room Sept. 10 while visiting her in the Bahamas three days after she gave birth to a baby girl named Dannielynn Hope.
Smith's longtime lawyer, Howard K. Stern, revealed Tuesday that he is the father of the little girl.
On Sept. 9, Daniel Smith arrived in Nassau to see his mother, with whom he'd always been extremely close. The family, including his newborn sister, spent time bonding in the hospital room that night. Daniel was seen tending to his mother around 6:20 a.m. on Sept. 10 – but at 9:38 a.m. that day Anna Nicole woke up to find her son unresponsive.
Doctors were immediately summoned and tried for 22 minutes to revive Daniel without success. He was pronounced dead at 10:05 a.m.
Days after Daniel's death Anna Nicole's Bahamian attorney, Michael Scott, described her as "overwhelmed" by grief. "She's trying to come to grips with the depths of her despair," he said.
Stern, who appeared on Larry King Live Tuesday, said Anna Nicole's baby daughter is "the one thing that is really keeping her going.
"Through it all, even with all the pain, she has been a great mom, a very attentive mom," he said.

Thanks for the update Chris. I hope the media doesn't start assuming incorrectly with the meth usage. A friend of mine who has undergone innumerable operations takes that for pain as issued by a painclinic. There is often a stigma in relation to that medication and due to people's ignorance they only see the addiction relief aspect of that medication. I do not know what his reasons are for the usage but I can only hope that this isn't more foder for the rabids to chew about.
As Howard's last cnn words were a request to pray for Anna Nicole, I hope everyone will take the moment.

as someone who was on Lexapro last spring (For obvious depressive reasons) I can tell you that **** messes with your head bigtime.
Both Deb & my sister Lesa (Who both are nurses) noticed it turned me into a near zombie, So much it frightened both of 'em. That **** increased the intercranial pressure on me, thus my headaches were 10 times worse than they already were, not to mention it give me a "dont give a f**k" attitude, and a somewhat suicidal attitude (Sad to admit, but I did have thoughts about it.)
Once I ran out of the current prescription I made the decision to not get it renewed, seemed I felt better after about 2-3 weeks.
I will never take Lexapro again, And I suggest anyone who may have it prescribed to them be VERY VERY careful.

I've known people who took those and definitely had a change in personality, for the worse, like from nice to mean. I've also known one or two people who seemed to do well on them. I don't understand why they prescribe in combination. Since they all basically do the same thing, isn't that overload?
When I heard about the other man, the conspiracy theorist streak in me came out and I wondered for a second if Daniel faked his own death to get out of the Anna limelight. Don't flame me or hate me for these thoughts crossing my mind or sharing them... they're just fleeting type things that make some people go "hhmmm...." -:sorry:

I don't understand why they prescribe in combination. Since they all basically do the same thing, isn't that overload? I am sure there will be further investigation with regard to how Daniel obtained the meds. I believe that meth is prescribed with what is termed as a "triplicate" prescript a tad more controlled then a regular prescription. If they can trace that, they may find some information. The only problem that could occur is that often people have a few doctors so it is possible that he received a prescript from different doctors and may well have obtained at different pharmacys as well; therefore they may not be able to come to the conclusion there was a specific individual's negligence involved. There is also the possibility that he was given the medication from someone else. All too tragic. If any good could from this it would be that peeps are enlightened to the dangers with drug mixtures and there is hope it would save a life/lives. No prob on the thoughts. It just occurred to me that with the statements of Howard's (that I found odd and posted on earlier) that Daniel said he wasn't tired and then was saying why am i so tired makes me wonder if perhaps someone, upon Daniel's initial comment of I'm not tired, may have offered him something (e.g. "here, this will put you to sleep.) It is only natural to have these thoughts when something happens such as this.

I'm confused about his medication combination as well. Zoloft and Lexapro are both antidepressants and not two I've ever heard of being taken together. Methadone is very rarely prescribed for pain- you have to have a pretty serious illness or injury. There is nothing wrong with taking it for substance abuse, you just need to be highly monitored.

Can this perhaps mean that he was already addicted / treated for addiction to heroin? That's usually the reason why they perscribe methadone. I wouldn't know whether they perscibe it for injuries, since it is highly addictive (and difficult to detox from).

Daniel may have got the drugs off the street, which is pretty damn easy.
There are doctors "to the stars" who prescibe drugs for cash.
When Daniel said he wasn't tired and then minutes later said he was tired, makes sense now. Those drugs mixed together can make you anxious one minute and then tired the next.

my mom was prescribed methadone after hip replacement surgery~ no other pain meds would wrk in her recovery & methadone quickly did the trick & she had a more speedy recovery w/ it~ i personally don't think daniel was a recovering addict~ when i saw cyril wecht on catherine crier he acted as if this was prolly given due to some back pain daniel had been suffering for some time~

supposed to take any other anti-depressants with Lexapro. Seems that would only intensify the effect that the anti-depressant would cause.
Methadone is used to bring drug-users off of their habit, why would someone be taking Methadone when they are depressed? Methadone causes pain, due to the withdrawals from the drugs that one are abusing.

Given his age I would assume the methadone was prescribed for drug addiction. Drug addiction causes depression. He likely had 2 separate doctors for each issue. Maybe even 3. Unfortunately it is easy for famous people to get drugs and not really think about them.
Would it be so surprising that the son of ANS was a drug addict? I don't think so. And I don't think we should make moral judgements on addicts. I think under certain circumstances anyone can become an addict. Like having a mother too self-absorbed to really be there for you, with a permissive attitude, plus having money, and access.

that many in the world have, more than 1 doctor prescribing meds for different ailments. That in turn can cause major problems with drug interactions and possible side effects (ala Terrell Owens).
Hell, I even had 2 different doctors opinions on my recent MRI, one doc said "Nothing to worry about, It isnt cancer...yaddayaddablahblah", while the other said "You DEFINITELY need to be worried about the result." Wanna guess doctors opinion I went with?

Methadone is a synthetic opioid with potent analgesic effects. Although it is associated commonly with the treatment of opioid addiction, it may be prescribed by licensed family physicians for analgesia. Methadone's unique pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics make it a valuable option in the management of cancer pain and other chronic pain, including neuropathic pain states. It may be an appropriate replacement for opioids when side effects have limited further dosage escalation. Metabolism of and response to methadone varies with each patient. Transition to methadone and dosage titration should be completed slowly and with frequent monitoring. Conversion should be based on the current daily oral morphine equivalent dosage. After starting methadone therapy or increasing the dosage, systemic toxicity may not become apparent for several days. Some medications alter the absorption or metabolism of methadone, and their concurrent use may require dosing adjustments. Methadone is less expensive than other sustained-release opioid formulations. (Am Fam Physician 2005;71:1353-8. Copyright© 2005 American Academy of Family Physicians.)
Methadone is a synthetic opioid. Although structurally dissimilar to morphine (MS Contin), methadone has significant analgesic qualities. Because the high dosages used in preliminary testing of methadone caused substantial side effects, the drug was not used clinically for several years.1 During the 1950s, methadone emerged as a treatment for opioid addiction and has remained the primary therapy for this condition for more than 40 years. Recently, methadone has been used to manage cancer pain and other chronic pain states. Its unique pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics make methadone a valuable option, but physicians should be aware of possible side effects.

WORLD EXCLUSIVE!
ANNA NICOLE SMITH WEDS HOWARD K. STERN!
Posted Thursday, Sept. 28 / 2 pm ET
Anna Nicole Smith married her long-time attorney and close confidante, Howard K. Stern, this morning just shortly before 10:30 am in Nassau, Bahamas. The wedding occurred only 18 days after the death of Anna's son Daniel, 20, from an accidental drug overdose in her Nassau hospital room on September 10.
In a world-exclusive report, an eyewitness tells Star that Anna, 38, and Howard, 37, tied the knot shortly before 10:30 am on the morning of September 28, while sailing on a white catamaran off of Nassau!
"There was heavy security around the yacht, plus extra speedboats to deliver more supplies as needed (including unlimited Dom Perignon champagne) from the mainland to the catamaran," says the eyewitness, who adds that the wedding party celebrated the union afterwards by having a swim party around the yacht — "and Anna was wearing a pink bikini! Later on, she changed into a colorful, one-piece suit with a wrap around her waist."
Two days before, on September 26, Stern appeared live on the Larry King Show via satellite from the Bahamas, to announce that he was the father of Anna's newborn daughter Danilynne Hope, that he and Anna "love each other" — and that the duo would get married "at some point."
Apparently, that point arrived much sooner than later. A source adds: "Stern was making all the arrangements in the days before the wedding."
This is apparently Stern's first marriage, but the third for Smith. She was a teen bride with Billy Wayne Smith (Daniel's father) in Texas in 1985; they divorced two years later. Smith then married 89-year-old oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall in June 1994. He died in 1995, and Anna — who recently became a legal resident of the Bahamas — is still battling in court for her share of his estate.
EXCLUSIVE: LARRY BIRKHEAD REACTS TO THE SHOCKING NEWS!
When contacted by Star about our breaking story of Anna Nicole Smith's wedding to Howard K. Stern, celebrity photographer Larry Birkhead, 31 — the former Smith boyfriend who has steadfastly claimed to be the father of Anna's new daughter Danilynne Hope — stated: "That’s not a grief-stricken mother. He [Howard] wants to take over paternity and that’s his maneuver. Nothing shocks me now. It gets crazier and crazier.”

I agree with Suze. Given his age and the fact that he didn't have any unmanagable chronic pain- I believe he was either prescribed methadone for drug addiction or was getting it illegally. Methadone is EXTREMELY dangerous. The dose my husband takes every day would kill someone else in twenty seconds. Methadone has a horrible stigma, but I won't bore you all by talking about it. ;) I'll just say that if he WAS taking it legally, for drug addiction, I feel badly that his care was so mismanaged. The whole thing is very sad.

Which may well explain the initial reports from hospital personnel that ANS yelled "you caused this!" I don't know. If they have gotten married, I am surprised they did so so soon after Daniel's death. They may well not be in the best state of mind. If Howard made the mistake of giving him an additional drug he must be ridden with guilt. And, I have to say there were so many emotions expressed on his face during that interview I was left wondering on it all. This wedding thing smacks of a similar situation as when Stevie married Kim Anderson shortly after Robin's death. So I was watching some news channel tonight and they had that coroner guy commenting on the toxicology report, he said very much what I was questioning... about how was it that Daniel had been taking two ADs at the same time. He also said that very often, especially in Hollywood, people go to more than one doctor and are given prescriptions.... blah blah blah. The other thing is, I learned a couple years ago that methadone is a big seller on the black market as a street drug. Did anyone in the media say if the methadone was prescribed, or any of the drugs he'd taken? Well, I expect we'll be hearing about this for awhile. :distress:

Something happened in that room. We likely will never know what. But, people rarely just drop dead at that age. Moreover, drugs were in his system. I wonder if there is a test that can tell how recently he took the drug(s) -- that could be damning if HS were seen giving him a pill, etc.

By the Associated Press
NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) -- Anna Nicole Smith believes a pathologist's conclusion that her son died from an accidental lethal combination of drugs shows he didn't commit suicide and hopes that others will learn from the tragedy, a lawyer said Thursday.
An American examiner hired by the family, Cyril Wecht, said 20-year-old Daniel Smith had methadone and two antidepressants in his system when he died Sept. 10 in his mother's hospital room in the Bahamas. Low levels of the three drugs interacted to cause an accidental death, Wecht said.
"At least she knows the attacks on her son's reputation can be put to rest because it's clear he didn't intentionally take his life," said Wayne Munroe, a Bahamian attorney for the 38-year-old reality TV star and former Playboy Playmate.
Smith, who gave birth to a daughter three days before her son died at her bedside, is awaiting the conclusions of Wecht and the Bahamas pathologist who performed a separate official autopsy, Munroe said.
Wecht is waiting for test results on tissue samples before he completes his final report.
Smith wants others to learn from her son's death, Munroe told The Associated Press.
"She wants to see exactly what happened in a final report because she wants to make sure it doesn't happen to someone else's son," he said.
Daniel Smith, who reportedly was hospitalized for depression and back pain before he traveled to Nassau, had been prescribed the antidepressant Lexapro, Wecht said. He said he had not determined whether Smith had also been prescribed Zoloft, the other antidepressant found in his system.
The two drugs can be lethal when taken together or in sequence, according to Ann Blake Tracy, the Des Moines, Iowa-based director of the International Coalition for Drug Awareness.
"The residue can stay there for some time, and if they're prescribed one after they've taken another, they can end up in trouble," she said.
Wecht said he did not know why Smith was taking methadone, a pain-reliever that is also used to ease heroin cravings for recovering addicts.
The combination of the three drugs, even in low doses, could easily have killed Smith, said Lisa Johnson, a pharmacist at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
"The methadone will slow you down, but the other ones make your system speed up, so it's an odd combination," she said.
Chief Magistrate Roger Gomez said he has not received official toxicology results or a police report, which can determine whether a jury inquest is necessary. Wecht, a Pittsburgh-based forensic pathologist, plans to discuss his findings with Bahamas officials. Gomez said Wecht's toxicology results will not affect the Bahamian investigation.
Daniel Smith, who appeared several times on the E! reality series "The Anna Nicole Show," was the son of Anna Nicole and Bill Smith, who married in 1985 and divorced two years later.
Smith married Texas oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall II in 1994, when she was 26 and he was 89. He died the following year. She has since been involved in legal disputes over the estate.

From PerezHilton.com - Looks like Howard did his homework - hence, Anna having the baby in the Bahamas.
In response to new reports that Anna Nicole married her lawyer, Howard K. Stern, in the Bahamas on Thursday, one legal expert explains to us that the move may be part of a cover-up as to the true paternity of Smith's new baby girl.
A family law lawyer tells PerezHilton.com:
"I am positive that the reason they got married is because under the family
law in the Bahamas, if a person marries the mother AFTER birth of the child AND acknowledges he is the natural father (which Howard Stern did on the Larry
King show) -- he is presumed under their laws to be the father of the child.
Look here for their statutes:
http://laws.bahamas.gov.bs/statutes/statute_CHAPTER_130.html
See Part III, 7 (1)(c)
Under Part 10, Larry Birkhead can only file a paternity proceeding if there is no one presumed to be the father."
This gets crazier and crazier.
We hope Anna plays herself in the made for TV movie!

09-29-2006, 10:47 AM
Part 7 states in relevant part (emphasis supplied) :
Unless the contrary is proven on a balance of probabilities, there is a presumption that a male person is, and shall be recognised in law to be, the father of a child in any one of the following circumstances
______________________________
So, the presumption is rebuttable. In other words, unless there is caselaw to the contrary, the face of the statute indicates the photog can rebutt the presumption and then apply part 10.
This whole things smacks of La Smith not wanting to be liable for any kind of child support to the photog, who likely has less money than Smith.

The whole thing is so sad. I do know of some older people who are given methadone to treat chronic back pain. But a young man in his twenties should have never been given that drug for that (if of course, it was). It's horribly addictive (obviously) and the withdrawal is worse than any other. He may have been given it for that though, since he was probably pretty wealthy and the son of a celebrity.
I meant to tell you that the info you posted was very good- methadone is very misunderstood. xo
