ok, i love my gym. it is a great facility - spacious, open, and CLEAN. i love exercising. what i do NOT love is being overweight at the gym.

i swear to god, i do not know what society expects from people. if you are fat and sedentary, you are a moron for not doing anything about your size. if you are fat and at the gym, you are a moron because don't you know the gym is not where you belong? shouldn't you be shoving a pie down your throat or something?

i dunno. perhaps i am oversensitive, but i don't think everybody gets stared at at the gym the same way i have been lately ... and i don't think they're checking me out. like, this dude was staring at me yesterday when i was on the elliptical. yes, i'm fat, but i can do the elliptical! jebus. i am just sick of rude people. i don't stare at people at the gym unless they're hot and can't see me.

i dunno, whatever. i'm just irritated and incoherent.

I totally know what you're talking about.

When I used to go to a public gym in Rochester - there were many times when over-weight folks would be working out and nearby would be two skanky little made-up girls giving them dirty looks - them laughing.

It would PISS me off...I always thought, "good for you!" and how admirable it was that they were at a gym - trying to get healthier...

Of course - I'd get bad looks too - because I wasn't hot enough to go to my gym:laugh: Apparently - if you're not a size 0 and don't wear full make-up AND have your hair done - you no longer belong in a gym. It's ok for guys - they can be as gross and nasty as they want - women still have to look pretty and smell nice - even while working out

I HATE the gym for these reasons.

You know what else I hate at gyms? People who talk on their cell phones while "working out" I'm sorry but if you're able to blab on and on about what so and so did the night befor e- you're NOT working out. Take social hour somewhere else.

I now work out at my apartment complex gym which is actually quite nice for an apartment complex - full free-weights set and every machine I need :D And it's usually empty....which I love.

ooh, your gym sounds nice. an empty gym is a happy gym.

dude, i've noticed people on cell phones at my gym ... i'm like, are you serious??? that's just gonna get me started on a whole other tangent, which is that no one in our society likes to be alone anymore. people either go to the gym together or talk on the phone while working out or walk to the gym while talking to someone, etc, etc, etc. it drives me crazy because i like to be alone a lot and nobody gets it. but as i said ... that's a whooole new can o' worms.

but yeah, gym rats are bitches. i'm not going there to be social, i'm going there to get healthy ... so shove it, bitches.

I KNOW!! I'm a total loner too - and lately more and more people make me feel bad for it...it pisses me off actually.

Before the WW thing I asked a gal in the office if some pizza place was good and she asked, "are you going to get one by yourself?" I said, yes....and there was an "aww..." What the hell. Not everyone has to be surrounded by people all the time. I LIKE being alone - imagine that.

So I think your theory is correct - I meet so many people who can't do anything by themselves.

And I gotta say - workign out in buddies - great - but why is it that usually means talking/yelling - so that EVERYONE in the gym has to listen to you? I could hear those gals over my headphones most of the time - and again - if you want social hour - go somewhere else!!!!

The worst was girls who would park themselves on the stretching/ab mats - just to chat - not stretching, not doing crunches - just talking and laughing...and pissing me off.

I so dont' miss the public gym

Oh, please, you know they're like, "Who's the hot bish and how can I make her sweat in the way no Stairmaster ever could?"

I'm the saaaaame way. That's why I spent all of this money on a membership, then went once, then never again. The only thing I got out of that trip was In The Meantime. (can I help it if the gym is in the mall? ) And even that was disappointing! Oh, well. I felt like everyone was staring at me, even though a small part of me knew they were probably more focused on their iPod and calorie count than they were on me.

I want to use the gym at Mac, even though I know probably end up doing the same thing as before. I'd love to get my own treadmill or something... If only we had a place to put it.

i totally broke up with my workout partner. i hated it ... it was such a hassle and it made me resentful towards her because i was miserable. i don't need to have a workout buddy to make sure i exercise ... i need to be left the eff alone! i just hate being up in time to be picked up, getting pissed if she's too early or too late, worrying about whether she'll be done in time for me to get to work, etc. just leave me the eff alone. :D

yeah, people act like it's a major tragedy if you're not attached to another person 24/7. i used to pick up aforementioned workout partner 3 days a week after her morning class so we could have lunch ... that also was miserable. geez, just once a week is too much for me. i am extremely miserly with my free time ... or maybe i'm just a bitch. who knows. where the hell am i going with this??

oh yeah, i'm jealous of your gym. :p

I wish I could afford my own elliptical too - but I'm po' and now have access to the little gym at my apartment :D Of course -that's not free of crap - yesterday I went and there was a woman there watching a Mexican Soap Opera LOUDLY. Pissed me off - yeah...maybe I'm a bitch - I'm leaning that way

Oh - and I've had so many offers for a gym buddy - no no no. I always manage to get out of it - I can not work out with someone else. So yeah, when a friend enthusiastically proclaims, "OH WE SHOULD WORK OUT TOGETHER..." I pretty much shoot that down right away. Just no.

Oh, that's nice - you kind of got her started and helped her out. yeah, I can't even do cardio with the TV's, you know how they have TVs? Only music.
In one long bout at the gym I was swimming instead of doing machines, that was fairly boring. No music and all. Just swimming and more swimming for an hour. I had to make up little games in my head. Counting games. Lost weight, though, and of course it was easy on my joints.
How much are you down, now, if you don't mind me asking? If you do mind, then just don't answer.

i do TVs once in a while, if something i regularly watch is on. but they always have the same 5 lame channels on: ABC, CNN, VH1, MTV, and ESPN. i mean, seriously, could i care less? it's gotta be music, though, for the most part. i used to do really up-tempo stuff, but lately i've been doing really laid-back stuff, to kinda balance mind & body and keep my heart rate down.

i lost 15, and then gained 2, which i think is muscle, because i've been doing really well with my diet.

Most people are too obsessed with themselves to be worried about you at the gym...lol.

This is entirely true. When I see heavy people at the gym I think, "You go." Anyone who has to tear you down isn't worth a moment of your thought. Also, they are so insecure they need to put people down to feel better about themselves. How sad. Always comparing themselves, how often do you think they fall short? Often! Hence the insecurity.

Anyway, just focus on how you feel when you go to the gym and ignore all of those idiots. If someone is really bothering you, move to another machine.

People staring suck. I was doing the chest press a couple of weeks ago and the guy at the machine accross from me was staring and staring and staring. It didn't matter that I made eye contact with him about half a dozen times. Man he was creepy. It was a boob thing. But can you be more polite? :shudder: I hate it when people stare. This means you, you bastard construction workers!

Honey, if you're a sensitive person then that is just who you are. People always told me I was "too sensitive" but that's alot like telling someone "your eyes are too brown" because that's how much control you have over your intrinsic sensitivity. So embrace it and use it. Thos bitches wish they had half the confidence you do to walk in a gym and look human instead of like some painted whore.

i am not overweight at all, but i still hate going to the gym, i wrk out at home, i have some equipment, but mostly i do palates *(sp) & cardio dvd's, that way no one is staring at ya & i always feel way more comfortable in the privacy of my own home~

Me too. I have gym equipment at home, I can work at my own pace, AND I can be half naked and not care. The one thing is, I used to work out in a gym and had trainers showing me how to do things correctly. I think that's important at first; once I knew what I was doing I was able to do everything correctly by myself, at home.

Carrie, I don't think you're overreacting. I'm sure it's not all in your head. There are rude people out there, looking down on others trying to make themselves feel better. Just know that it's not YOU, it's THEM. It's their problem, their distorted view of what people should look like, their lack of self esteem. If they were that confident in themselves, they wouldn't have to stare, or laugh, or whatever. And I'll bet that some of them are thinking "good for her!"

No worries, sweetie. You just go in there, work your ass off, and feel good about yourself for doing it. You are one sexy, strong, healthy bitch - and don't let ANYONE make you think otherwise!!!

I stopped going to the gym at work, but not because I didn't like it. I liked the one close to my office (there's another one but I'd have to drive to it), but it was small & I would sometimes have to wait for a machine. Plus, skinny little 18 year old college chicks gabbing to 20 year old buff boys about the next frat house kegger was not inspiring in the least. So when I saw a used gym-quality elliptical in the classifieds, I called & bought it that day. I paid $350 for a $2000 machine that was rarely used. Yeah, it's still pricey, but worth it for me. I like to work out while I'm watching my TV shows - prevents me from sitting on my ass & eating instead. :D Saves me time by doing that too. I do hand weights & resistance exercises too. I was worried I wouldn't use it, but I've had it a while (6 months?) and I've been keeping up with it for the most part - at least twice a week, more often if the weather's crappy & I can't walk outside.

thanks. i'm pretty psyched. i keep making little goals. 180: i'll start jogging once a week. 160: i'll buy a swimsuit (i haven't been swimming since 8th grade). 130: fake leather jacket.

You rock to set these goals and little rewards for yourself!!

One of the things I've had to learn is to not reward myself with food - and so I'm trying the other thing - like buying myself non-edibles for rewards when I reach certain goals.

sigh.

Well, grocery shopping ruined my plan. I went right after work, thinking I'd get it over with. Bad move. By the time I got home, I was starving, aggravated & had a slamming headache. So although I didn't pig out, I didn't work out either. I did do crunches. I plan to make up for it tonight. Going straight home for dinner, then I'll relaxe & do some things around the house, then work out during TV time.

I went to the gym this morning and Mexican Soap Opera lady wasn't there :blob1: So I put on Some Little House on the Prairie (thank you Hallmark Channel) and did a 10 minute warm-up on the eliptical...then I did arms...and then I could barely shampoo my hair

It's been a long time since I've done full-out workouts - it feels good to be getting back into it---and today? I'm wearing pants that I could not wear even two weeks ago :D

That's not bad, it's only one day. Did you see my note above? :D Oh, and yesterday I bought some size 10 jeans. :blob2: You know, instead of 12? I got some size 12 pants too, but they are loose. The 10's are tight, though. Hmm, I guess I wear an 11? Whatever, my new, cute, tight, size 10 jeans look slammin' on me.

I'm totally getting discouraged - but luckily not enough to stop what I'm doing.

I'm losing soooo slowly. But I stepping it up at the gym...though today I can't move my arms lol. The good news is - I'm wearing yet another pair of pants today that I couldn't wear just two weeks ago...so I guess I'm doing something right.

I hear ya...I was in my teens when I last did WW though - so more active, younger etc - I dropped weight like crazy. And they told me at WW that since I'm not "obese" that the weight will come off much more slowly....

Well it sure is coming off slowly, and it's pissing me off. But I want to get rid of the back fat too - I hate it, it's depressing. Sigh - so I'll stick with it - keep eating right and well I do need to get better with the exercise - I'm workin' on that!

Yes, that's why! I want to add more exercise too but it's always hard to find the energy and time. I usually just push myself because I feel so good when I'm done! Hehe. "Do I feel like going to the gym? No, but I'm going." Right now I just want to go to bed.

Don't forget that weight training really helps boost your metabolism so you burn more calories even at rest.

I don't do sore. So my progress is S-L OW. But I'm pretty strong now. Once you go up in weight and start feeling stronger then you get into it. I frigging hated lifting but now I tolerate it and sometimes actually enjoy it!
